Capter 7: Surrogacy
Vanitha sat on the couch, her legs curled underneath her as she sipped her tea. The memory of her recent conversation with Heather at the park played vividly in her mind.
Heather, glowing with joy and carrying twins, had surprised Vanitha with how effortlessly she seemed to handle it all. It wasn’t just her radiant appearance but also the way she spoke about surrogacy that had planted a seed in Vanitha’s mind.
Ashok entered the living room, still drying his hair from his shower. He looked at Vanitha with a smile, noticing the contemplative expression on her face. “What’s on your mind?” he asked, sitting beside her.
Vanitha hesitated for a moment, swirling the tea in her cup before setting it down. “I ran into Heather at the park yesterday,” she began. “She looked amazing—she’s carrying twins now, you know.”
Ashok raised an eyebrow. “Twins? That’s impressive. How’s she doing?”
“She’s doing great,” Vanitha said with a smile. “But what really surprised me was how she talked about surrogacy. She told me that she and her husband used a surrogate for their first child before deciding to carry the twins themselves.”
Ashok leaned back, intrigued. “Surrogacy? I didn’t know that.”
Vanitha nodded thoughtfully. “Neither did I until yesterday. She said it was one of the best decisions they ever made. They found someone who was not only willing but excited to help them start their family.”
Ashok studied her face carefully, sensing there was more to this story than just sharing Heather’s experience. “Why do I feel like you’ve been thinking about this a lot?” he asked gently.
Vanitha smiled softly, appreciating how well Ashok understood her. “Because I have,” she admitted. “Heather made it sound so… possible. She talked about how they matched with someone who shared their values and how they built this incredible bond throughout the process.”
Ashok reached for her hand, his thumb brushing over her knuckles reassuringly. “Are you thinking about surrogacy for us?” he asked.
Vanitha took a deep breath before answering. “I don’t know,” she said honestly. “But it feels like something we should at least talk about. I’ve been so hesitant about carrying a child myself—about what it would mean for my body, my career, our lives—but hearing Heather’s story made me realize there are other ways to build a family.”
Ashok nodded slowly, his expression thoughtful. “It’s definitely something worth considering,” he said. “But I want to make sure this is something you truly want—not just because of what Heather said or because you feel pressured by anyone else.”
Vanitha smiled at his words, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. “I know,” she said softly. “And I don’t have all the answers yet… but I think I’m ready to start exploring them.”
Ashok squeezed her hand gently, his eyes filled with warmth and understanding. “Then let’s explore them together,” he said.
Encouraged by his support, Vanitha leaned forward slightly, her voice growing more confident as she continued. “Heather mentioned some things that stuck with me—like how important it is to find someone you connect with on more than just a practical level. She said their surrogate became like family to them.”
“That makes sense,” Ashok replied thoughtfully. “It’s such an intimate journey—you’d want to share it with someone who feels like the right fit.”
“Exactly,” Vanitha agreed. “And she said the first step is just having honest conversations—both between us and with anyone we might consider working with.”
Ashok nodded again, his mind already turning over the possibilities. “So… what would you want in a surrogate?” he asked.
Vanitha paused for a moment, considering his question carefully before answering. “Someone who shares our values,” she said finally. “Someone who understands how important this is to us and who wants to be part of something meaningful.”
“That sounds like a good starting point,” Ashok said with a smile.
They sat in silence for a moment, both lost in thought as they imagined what this journey might look like for them. Finally, Ashok broke the quiet with a playful grin.
“So… does this mean I get to make spreadsheets and research agencies?” he teased.
Vanitha laughed, swatting his arm lightly. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” she replied with a smile.
“Fair enough,” Ashok said with a wink. “But just so you know… I’m really good at spreadsheets.”
Their laughter filled the room as they shared this tender moment—a small but significant step toward an exciting new chapter in their lives.
