Chapter 4: A Morning of New Bonds
The crisp morning air filled Vanitha’s lungs as she jogged through the park, her ponytail swaying with each stride. The rhythmic sound of her sneakers hitting the pavement was soothing, a moment of clarity before the day unfolded. She loved these runs, especially after Ashok left for work—it was her time to think, to reflect.

Vanitha hesitated before nodding. “They’re adorable,” she admitted softly. “I’ve always loved children.”
Heather chuckled. “They do have that effect on people.” She motioned for Vanitha to join her on a nearby bench. “So, do you have kids?”
Vanitha sat down beside her and shook her head. “Not yet,” she said with a small smile. “My husband and I… we’ve talked about it. But it’s complicated.”
Heather tilted her head curiously. “Complicated how?”
Vanitha hesitated for a moment before deciding to open up. “I want to be a mother,” she began slowly, “but I’m terrified of what pregnancy might do to my body. I’ve worked so hard to maintain my health and figure—it’s such a big part of who I am.”
Heather nodded thoughtfully. “That’s completely valid,” she said gently. “Pregnancy is beautiful, but it’s not easy—physically or emotionally.”
Vanitha sighed, relieved that Heather wasn’t judging her. “It’s not that I’m against it,” she added quickly. “I think about holding my baby all the time. But then I think about everything I’d have to sacrifice…”
Heather placed a comforting hand on Vanitha’s arm. “You know,” she began carefully, “I felt the same way before I had my twins.”
Vanitha looked at her in surprise. “You have twins?”
Heather grinned and nodded toward the strollers. “That’s them over there.”
“But… you look amazing!” Vanitha exclaimed, gesturing at Heather’s toned physique.
Heather laughed lightly. “Thank you! That’s because I didn’t carry them myself—I used surrogacy.”
Vanitha blinked in surprise, her curiosity piqued. “Surrogacy?”
Heather nodded again, leaning back on the bench. “Exactly.
