First of all, I would like to apologize for my language in earlier comment yet wouldn’t edit it as Nadir had it coming his way for his behavior and its perfectly justified even though its crude way to put it out there.
I do not know where to begin to place my thoughts on this chapter…Sparrows and Sparrowhawks.
I guess just like real people in life, how they could not see the consequences before actions and make mistakes that irrevocably damage and disrupt peace. Same way I think readers cannot anticipate what’s coming into a story that could show them that their thoughts and predictions were wrong and things that they could not see are indeed lurking behind the scenes that could prove them wrong.
I have thought that since the couple talked to each other and for the first time opened up with more freshness and talked about their insecurities, concerns and apprehensions after chapters with Shahin, they reached a state where they can understand each other and can find more passion, love and lust and can balance them appropriately without involving feelings like jealousy, freedom of thought and most importantly freewill.
And yet here we are, into the 6th chapter of Sparrows and Sparrowhawks and picture clearly shows that Nadir is misusing his newfound gift from Meena's FREEWILL – Her will to comply to his desires and promise that she will have sex with whoever and wherever he wishes her to do it.
Until the chapter with Shahin, Nadir did not trust her completely and In his mind with right coercion there could have a possibility that Meena could cheat him but once that fear was gone and couple promised to be transparent with each other, this new freedom made Nadir irresponsible, reckless, thoughtless and imprudent.
Now into the details why I think so….
Nadir is an individual who is slowly slipping on a slippery slope and he already stepped onto it and there is no stopping it. He has a beautiful wife and there won’t be any men on the planet who wouldn’t want to hit on her or doesn’t appreciate her beauty, but does that mean he will have images in his mind with every single one of them and eventually make or push his wife onto them? Where would this game end?
There are things that I noticed which don’t make sense now based on the rules that couple seem to have imposed on themselves, but they seem to be breaking them now.
"So, does this mean you'll be more sociable to our friends?" I asked.
"Let's be realistic here, Nadir. Don’t go too fast.", Meena said and smiled.
I nodded. "But we know them for sure. They are our friends and as you know and say, they are just men but no dangerous. And I must admit I like the way they look at you, baby. I can't help it. And their simple conversation is kind of a turn on. Also, I think part of it might be for me that they are older than us, and, as you said, weathered looking."
So, it seems that first the game started with, hey these are just friends, no danger and they know us, and they are old and withered. Let’s help them, poor souls. They need to be happy, and they will be happy if you make them happy.
"Meena said to me previously that it is okay if you look at her, and she understands it and that makes her not angry or annoyed, on the contrary, she feels flattered,” I emphasized to relax the atmosphere.
Then he forcibly with out discussing, pushes her into the game by giving men suggestions that Meena is game…while touching her on her thighs before them...while giving them hidden meaning behind her words which would have been otherwise relate different meaning.
Now that Nadir got what he wanted, Meena played his game, and Tahir got his best day of his life…he started pushing boundaries and asking her about things that could be anticipated in future or things that they can do further in these games.
"Nadir, you're kidding me, right?" Meena asked in disbelief. "You honestly think you'd be able to handle it if I meet another man without you being around?"
The first suggestion was to ask her how she would feel if both Tahir and Farzan took her together.
Second one, asking her to be free and pursue men even when he is not around. He trusts her enough now that she will relate everything to her once it is done.
I did not see any issue with these suggestions as it would only mean Nadir trusts her more now and is willing to give her space and showing that confidence in her, Meena felt it too, the shift in his position from previous times., but where Nadir went wrong in his aggressive and illogical demands is there are no limits set in any of the suggestions nor couple talked through the consequences of them being sporty about their open relationship.
As you can see the consequences of their actions have already begun to take shape.
Here I would like to divide the couple in perspective and analyze their actions.
Nadir:
I imagined Cyrus's hands running over her body, him taking in her delicious forms. Groping her, licking her lips…
"No, no, no, no, stop thinking those sorts of things… He is nevertheless, still a teenager," I muttered. "You don't want her fucking some teenager. Or anyone so young. It's just a silly fantasy, nothing more. Just ignore it."
This was nuts. Things had taken a dangerous turn, at least in my brain. I kept seeing Cyrus and Meena together. There, in my fantasy, the kid was taking what belong to me, he was getting the ultimate prize. Meena was too sweet to ever agree to it, but of course, my heart, my pulse and my cock all felt differently.
My beautiful, intelligent and smart wife, the love of my life, was falling for his cheap and dirty lines.
This obsession over seeing his wife with varied men is taking over mind and body of Nadir and he is not even realizing it.
I stood there listening, nodding along, unsure what to say. A tiny devil in the back of my head was telling me to enjoy this. Especially as she was more pissed off than hurt.
So, you won’t stop unless your wife is hurt? When she is pissed, doesn’t it mean anything to you?
"Almost sounds like you like how he admired you," I teased, knowing full well she hated it.
He coaxes her into agreeing into his words and makes the seriousness of the situation dilute into a funny encounter…so this is what Nadir is becoming since the open talk…was I as a reader able to see this transition? I definitely, did not, and I can see he is losing his marbles over his fantasies. Losing his mind the capability of thinking what’s right vs what’s wrong.
"Wow, Meena, he must be pretty shitty drunk, to act like that." I asked, “What did he say, the stupid, impudent guy?”.
He lost the ability to judge a character properly, that kid might be drunk but his true nature has just now evolved. He has the audacity to pursue a lady like Meena just because he has a theory that his dad had sex with her. This behavior has nothing to do with drinks, he has been thinking about this since the time he knew about Meena visiting his house from servants.
So, Nadir as you can see is in a quicksand and doesn’t even realize that there is no hard surface beneath his feet right now. He is going in quickly into this fantasy world and very soon will be pushing his wife into it. Its time Meena realizes this before its too late.
Meena:
I have problems with Meena’s behavior too…
I know this is past and everything is over the timeline, and we are only hearing it now but things that take turns will be real time for us as we are reading it now and hence my reactions will be real time as well.
Meena is a respectable professor and doctor. She is smart, intelligent and sometimes wild. She knows good and bad, she understands men better than Nadir understands women, and she has a sane head on her shoulders but when it comes to fulfilling Nadir’s desires, I feel Meena loses her head and acts impulsively than thinking it through on her situation.
We can justify my comments from her behavior with Tahir and Farzan in the living room when they were around fire. She knows Nadir is excited, she knows he is planning something soon in future but when things turn into a marathon around her, confusing her, her husband has picked a pace that she is not comfortable, she is not putting a break into his pedals, rather she is running into a moving train. I feel in her surrender to Nadir and his fantasies, she is not willing to stop and look around her before complying into her husband’s wishes. Having a few questions that need answers, maybe Meena can shed some light.
1. She saw that Cyrus is not the same meek boy but openly flirting with her, why would she be giving him second chances on terrace?
2. She saw that he is whispering in her ear obscene things, where is her age-appropriate behavior, I feel she is flustered, flushed like a teenager herself rather than being a woman who has a decade of experience dealing with numerous patients of Cyrus age, can easily keep him on his knees.
3. Why wouldn’t Meena not defend her being at his home with his dad? Meeting some one at his dad for a week is inappropriate? Since when did this should give bad impression to Cyrus? Instead of putting the rumor at rest she looked shocked, undefended and moreover seems flustered like a thief caught in the act.
There is no hard proof that Meena has slept with Jalal, as happened in their home rather than his ranch home, so what ever servants information was it was only a gossip. So, it’s very important to put it to rest once and for all when his behavior seems to know it all.
4. Why did she not slap the young man right away for trying to show his thing? I am more disappointed in Meena than Nadir. It’s disrespectful, rude and inappropriate behavior. Just getting pissed off and walking off is a meek behavior of some one who is weak. One slap across his face would have teached him a lesson never to mess with a woman as some cheap object of desire. They are on terrace and no one near and it won’t disrupt the party in any fashion, it would serve him a nice lesson and bring his wacky ass down to earth for behaving as If he owns her. I wouldn’t seek this action from Nadir, he seems to be lost in his fantasy world. Not sure if he will ever evolve from it, but Meena, am disappointed.
Now, let’s take a step back and analyze mine and Lollo’s reactions, are we over thinking this all sequences and judging the couple unnecessarily?
I do not think so….
Compare the kid with Murad…. they maybe same age…or add couple of years between them…So why would we enjoy Meena’s interactions with Murad but judge with Cyrus?
Its simple, Murad and Meena’s encounter was impromptu and beautiful, it’s about a teenager who worked in their house and got smitten by her beauty and he is like our next-door teen who gets attracted to a woman who is twice his age. His innocence brought the situation alive, him bringing flowers to Meena to get her attention brought smiles to readers, so when Meena gave him the show, gave him the kisses, let him enjoy her, its more about her teaching a teen a first touch of a woman, she was careful also to make sure he doesn’t fall in love with her as that in that age the inability to differentiate between infatuation and love could break his heart. Everything about that chapter is beautiful and readers like us could relate to it.
Now, Cyrus is altogether a different teen. His arrogance, His attitude and affluence from his dad’s money rubbing off from his careless nonchalant behavior. He obviously was always this character, but it seems like Jalal has put his foot down on his throat to not let the beast out until now. With him out of the way, he seems to feel he owns everything and everyone around him. What would have happened for example if Murad was Jalal’s son, he would have approached Meena but instead of broaching the subject of Jalal and Meena, he would have adorably gazed at her with fascination, which by itself would have triggered a good response from both Meena and Nadir and would have been in the good books for a chance with Meena but since Cyrus nature is not Murad’s nature, couple should have been proactive about showing his true place. Yet we see different reactions and different mistakes.
Nadir, thinks he is a kid who is drunk lol
“I want you to have a look at his dick if he is right, he wanted to show you as he said he had the same Thing too, you know that from his father already and you can evaluate," I said and giggled
What? Look at his thing and compare with his dad? Nadir really lost his mind.
“And perhaps help him a bit? Is that too far? I can understand if that is over the line, but come on, don't you get just a little excited by it?"
What is this helping every one a bit .... this shit all the time…. help Tahir, help Farzan, help Cyrus lol
Are they people deprived of sex in their life and Meena is here to relive them of their hopeless lives from their loneliness lol, is that it? Is there no sense of good or bad among the suitors you choose for your wife? You like your wife being watched by men and every man that lays his eyes on your wife and expresses interest then he is suitable?
Nadir needs to wake up and realize that there will be consequences for his stupidity.
Cyrus could go and tell the world what would have been just gossip, now a truth confirmed by Jalals son. What would the reputation of Meena in the town be like?
You want to bring light into your fantasy world but do not bring fire into it, it will burn it all down to ashes.
