Family of Shaows
#26
Part 6: Shadows of the Past
At the government office canteen, a bustling yet informal space where employees gathered for their lunch break. Sai and Srinu sat at their usual spot, a corner table by the window that offered a view of the courtyard.
Sai stirred his coffee absentmindedly, trying to frame his question. Finally, he broke the silence. “Srinu anna, can I ask you something?”
Srinu, mid-bite of his idli, raised an eyebrow. “Of course, Sai. What’s on your mind?”
Sai leaned in slightly, lowering his voice to avoid the chatter around them. “It’s about Purushotham. What do you know about him?”
Srinu paused, putting down his spoon. “Why do you ask about him all of a sudden?”
Sai hesitated, then decided to proceed carefully. “I’ve seen him around at Sunanda madam’s quarters, and I got curious. He seems… close to the family.”
Srinu nodded knowingly. “Ah, yes. Purushotham has been with them for a long time. He’s like family, you could say. Sunanda madam’s mother had a very close friend, and Purushotham is her son. That connection brought him into their lives.”
Sai’s curiosity deepened. “So, he’s been part of their lives for years?”
Srinu leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. “Yes. From what I know, he’s been around as long as I’ve worked with madam. Even after her husband’s passing, he’s stayed involved, helping with errands and being a reliable presence. To madam, he’s like a son.”
Sai nodded, filing the information away. “And what about Aruna? She seems… different.”
Srinu chuckled lightly, though his tone hinted at a more serious undertone. “Aruna, ah. She’s not exactly cut from the same cloth. She only came to stay with madam after her father’s death. Before that, she lived with her sister Vani and her brother Venu.”
Sai froze mid-sip of his coffee. “She has a sister and a brother?”
Srinu nodded, a flicker of surprise on his face at Sai’s ignorance. “Yes, didn’t you know? Her sister Vani is married and has her own family, and Venu… well, I haven’t heard much about him. Aruna isn’t particularly close to them, though. I suspect there’s some history there, but it’s not my place to dig into it.”
Sai absorbed the new information carefully, his thoughts racing. The layers to Aruna’s life seemed far more intricate than he had initially assumed. He nodded thoughtfully, deciding not to press further for now. The pieces of the puzzle were slowly falling into place, and he knew he had to tread carefully as he delved deeper into the web of relationships surrounding Sunanda madam’s family.
Srinu himself tells Sai that he should ask Yedukondalu if he wants more information. Sai says, "Is he the same who works at the Manibazar office?" Srinu says, "Yes."
Srinu leaned back in his chair, a nostalgic smile playing on his lips as he began narrating the events of the past. “You know, Sai, I wasn’t always working for Sunandha madam. I started off as Narendra sir’s driver. I worked for him for almost ten years. Wherever he got transferred, he used his connections to make sure I got transferred too. He was like that—always took care of the people who worked for him.”
He paused to sip his coffee before continuing. “After sir retired, there was a brief period when I didn’t work for them. Those were quiet days, but I stayed in touch with the family. Later, when Sunandha madam needed someone reliable after sir’s passing, I was reassigned to her. It’s been that way ever since.”
"It was during that period when Yedukondalu worked for madam," Srinu added, his voice lowering slightly as if sharing a secret.
Sai, intrigued, leaned forward. “How was Narendra sir?” he asked, curious about the man who seemed to have left such an impact.
Srinu’s face lit up with an almost reverent glow. “Sir was no ordinary man, Sai. People called him ‘The Lion,’ and rightly so. Imagine this—a man who could have lived in luxury, holding one of the highest ranks, yet chose to stay in madam’s modest quarters after retirement. That’s the kind of honesty we’re talking about.”
His voice grew firmer, tinged with awe. “He was a force of nature, Sai. Loved by those who worked under him, respected by his peers, and utterly feared by anyone who dared walk the wrong path. Sir didn’t just lead—he inspired, commanded, and protected. There was no one like him, and there never will be.”
Srinu paused for a moment, his eyes clouded with memory. "They got married way before I started working for them," he said, his voice low. "But from what I’ve heard, I can tell you this much—Sunandha started working in Sir's office as a mid-level clerk. She was smart, hardworking, and honest, just like her reputation."
He leaned in slightly, his tone dropping even further. "Sir was very charming, you see. Every woman in the office desired him, but he was loyal to his first wife. That loyalty was unshakable. But Madam… well, she became very close to Sir, and no one really knew how or why."
Srinu's eyes flickered to the side before he continued, as though gathering the right words. "Then, something happened. No one really knows what went on behind closed doors, but from what I’ve heard, Sir and his first wife started fighting daily. The tension grew, and that’s when Madam and Sir became even closer. It wasn’t long before they ended up married."
He let out a small sigh, shaking his head slightly. "It wasn’t an easy thing for anyone to understand, least of all for those who knew Sir’s character. But in the end, that’s how it happened.
Srinu’s gaze softened as he leaned back in his chair. “You know, Sir was 18 years older than Madam, but they looked so good together,” he said with a touch of nostalgia. “Even with the age difference, there was something about them that just clicked. They were always in sync, like two halves of the same whole.” He paused, his expression growing more thoughtful.
“When I first started working for them, Babu was already about 8 years old,” Srinu continued, his tone tinged with reverence. “Even then, Sir and Madam were inseparable. It was like watching a newlywed couple, even after all those years. There was this warmth, this bond between them that was undeniable. You could tell they were made for each other, no matter the challenges life threw their way.”
He gave a small smile, his eyes reflecting the admiration he had for the couple. “They were a picture of commitment, always standing by each other, no matter what. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

Back at college, Babu settled back into his routine, though something about him had shifted. There was a noticeable difference in his demeanor—he walked with more purpose, his steps steady and his posture straighter. The weight of his internal struggles seemed lighter, and his usually distant expression had softened.
Fucking Rani, had given him a new sense of confidence. He was no longer carrying the same burden of confusion and frustration that had once clouded his every thought. Instead, he found himself engaging more with his surroundings, and even the little things—like his lectures or the gym sessions—felt more meaningful.
Though the turbulence of his emotions hadn’t completely disappeared, there was a certain calmness in the way he carried himself now. Babu was learning to navigate the chaos of his life with more clarity, all thanks to Rani’s pussy.
Every night, Babu and Rani spent hours on the phone, talking about everything. Their conversation meandered through the mundane details of his college life—his classes, his newfound love for poetry, the antics of his friends—but each sentence was loaded with a double meaning, a secret language that only they understood. Each time they talked about his "stamina" or her "flexibility," it was as if they were touching each other again, their words a silent echo of the nights they had spent tangled in the sheets.
Their relationship became a source of comfort for both of them, a place where they could be open about their desires without fear of judgment. But as they spoke, Rani felt a twinge of guilt. She knew that this was a betrayal. Rani's husband, Ashok, had been nothing but kind to her and her family too. Yet, the pull of her feelings for Babu was too strong to resist, a current that dragged him deeper into a whirlpool of desire and deception.
Rani’s husband, who had always been trusting and understanding, began to notice the increasing number of late-night calls. At first, he dismissed it, but after a few weeks, a sense of unease began to creep in. He suspected that something might be wrong. The late-night conversations, the secrecy, and the closeness between Babu and Rani started to make him uncomfortable. He couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to their conversations than what met the eye, and it left him questioning the boundaries of their relationship.
As the days passed, Babu and Jasmine’s friendship also grew even stronger. Babu began to understand that Jasmine’s personal choices were hers to make, and he no longer felt the need to judge or question her decisions. He admired her independence, her confidence, and the way she carried herself, despite the occasional tension between them.
For Jasmine, Babu’s newfound confidence was magnetic. She noticed the subtle changes in him—the way he stood taller, the way he carried himself with purpose. There was an air of self-assurance about him now that hadn’t been there before, and it made her see him in a new light. His quiet strength, combined with the kindness he had always shown her, started to stir something inside her that she hadn’t expected.
One evening, they were studying together at the campus café when Jasmine looked up from her notes. "You’ve changed," she said casually, taking a sip from her coffee.
Babu glanced at her, surprised by the comment. "In what way?"
Jasmine smiled, her eyes softening. "I don’t know. You just... seem different. More sure of yourself, I guess."
Babu looked down, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. "I’ve been trying to work on it. Things haven’t been easy, but I guess it’s starting to show."
Jasmine nodded, her gaze lingering on him for a moment longer than usual. "Well, it’s working," she said, her voice just above a whisper.
Babu met her eyes, feeling a warmth spread through him. There was something unspoken between them now, something that had shifted in their friendship. As much as Babu valued Jasmine’s companionship, he began to wonder if it was becoming more than just that. But he was hesitant to cross that line, unsure of what it might mean for their bond.
Meanwhile, Jasmine began to notice her own feelings changing. She had always appreciated Babu’s presence, but now she found herself thinking about him more often, wondering how he would react in certain situations, how his smile made her heart flutter. She had always been independent, but Babu’s presence made her feel something different—a sense of comfort she hadn’t expected to find in a friendship.
It wasn’t just his newfound confidence that attracted her, but the way he cared for the people around him. He was always there when she needed him, and that made her start to think of him in a way she hadn’t before.
Babu's steady gym routine and the guidance of his senior, Jean, led to a significant transformation. His once-unassuming appearance evolved into a confident and well-built physique. This change, combined with his growing self-assurance, did not go unnoticed.
Once considered just another quiet, studious guy in college, Babu now turned heads wherever he went. Girls who had barely acknowledged his presence before suddenly found themselves drawn to his newfound charisma. His calm demeanor and respectful interactions added to his appeal, making him a heartthrob for many.
Despite the attention, Babu remained grounded. His transformation was not just physical—it was a reflection of his journey to regain control over his life amidst the emotional chaos that surrounded him. Though he appreciated the newfound admiration, his focus remained on his studies, his family, and his friendship with Jasmine.
Babu’s daily calls to his mother, Sunandha, continued, but the conversations grew increasingly brief. Their exchanges, once filled with updates and casual chatter, now revolved around simple pleasantries and routine questions. However, Sunandha, now engrossed in her own health journey and personal routine, didn’t take it to heart. She understood that Babu was navigating his own path, and his newfound confidence likely brought its own distractions.
Meanwhile, Babu’s attitude towards Purushotham underwent a quiet transformation. His earlier insistence that Purushotham marry Aruna faded. One evening, during a rare conversation, Babu casually said, “It’s okay, Purush. I get you now.”
The words were simple, but they carried a depth of understanding that hadn’t been there before. Babu was letting go of his frustrations and expectations, choosing instead to focus on himself and his own growth. This marked another step in his journey toward maturity and self-acceptance.
Purushotham was pleasantly surprised by the sudden change in Babu’s demeanor. The tension that had previously hung heavy between them seemed to dissolve overnight. Conversations that were once strained now flowed naturally, reminiscent of the camaraderie they shared in earlier days.
They often found themselves laughing over shared memories, and occasionally, the topic of Aruna would come up. Purushotham, chuckling, once remarked, “Babu, you know your sister got a big curvy ass that's just made for doggystyle"
Babu couldn't help but laugh, his eyes lighting up as he playfully nudged Purushotham. "Yeah, I don't blame you, she does have an amazing ass," he admitted, his voice filled with mirth. It was a rare moment of openness between the two friends, one that acknowledged the carnality of their shared desire without judgment or recrimination. The air grew lighter as the tension dissipated, and their laughter echoed through the quiet night.
These lighthearted exchanges brought a sense of normalcy and mutual understanding to their relationship, a welcome reprieve from the complexities that had once strained their bond. For Purushotham, seeing Babu like this was a relief—and a reminder of the friendship they both valued.
