### Chapter 2: **A Twist of Fate**

The sky had turned a deep shade of gray by the time Clara’s classes ended. The humid air clung to her skin, and the streets buzzed with the anticipation of rain. She hurried out of the college gates, hoping to catch an auto before the downpour, but the streets were already crowded with students looking for the same escape. The first drops of rain began to fall softly at first, then quickly turned into a heavy downpour.

Clara’s dupatta clung to her damp skin as she stood under a small awning, scanning the chaotic road for a ride. It was getting darker, and the empty street felt unnervingly quiet. The rain, once refreshing, now seemed to isolate her from the safety of the busy college life she was used to. To make matters worse, a group of rowdy young men had gathered nearby, their voices rising above the sound of the rain.

They noticed her standing alone.

“Hey, pretty girl, need some company in this weather?” one of them called out with a smirk. His companions laughed as they moved closer, their intentions clear.

Clara’s heart raced, panic creeping into her chest as she clutched her bag tighter, stepping back instinctively. There was nowhere to run. The rain had driven most people indoors, and the men were blocking her only path.

Before she could respond, one of them lunged towards her, reaching for her arm. In a desperate move, Clara pushed him away and started running, her feet splashing in the rainwater pooling in the street. Fear fueled her steps, but they were faster, and she could hear them closing in behind her.

Just when she thought there was no escape, she turned a corner and ran straight into someone—hard. The impact nearly knocked her off her feet, but strong arms quickly steadied her. Startled, she looked up, her wide eyes locking with the familiar face of Rahul.

For a moment, time seemed to slow. Clara's breath was heavy, her chest heaving from the chase, and without thinking, she grabbed onto Rahul’s shirt, holding him tight as if he was her only lifeline in the storm. The rain poured down on them, soaking them both, but in that moment, all Clara could feel was the warmth and safety of his presence.

Rahul looked down at her, surprised at first. But his instinct to protect kicked in immediately. He glanced up, noticing the group of men approaching, their sneers quickly turning to caution as they realized who Clara had run into.

“Hey! Get lost!” Rahul’s voice was sharp, commanding attention. His reputation preceded him, and the group, recognizing that Rahul wasn’t someone to mess with, hesitated. One of them mumbled something under his breath, and they slowly backed away into the rain, disappearing into the shadows.

Clara’s grip on Rahul loosened, and she stepped back, suddenly aware of how close she was to him. Her face flushed, a mix of relief and embarrassment flooding her.

“Are you okay?” Rahul asked, his voice softening as he looked her over. The concern in his eyes was genuine, a far cry from his usual playful flirtation.

“I... I’m fine,” she managed to say, her voice trembling slightly. “Thank you.”

“You’re soaked,” he observed, pulling off his leather jacket and dbanging it over her shoulders. “Let me give you a ride home.”

Before she could protest, Rahul led her to his parked car, opening the door for her. Clara hesitated for a moment. She had never been in this kind of situation before—alone with Rahul, the campus flirt, drenched in rain, her heart still racing from the fear she had just escaped. But as she glanced back at the empty, rain-soaked street, the thought of facing it alone again made the decision for her. She slid into the passenger seat.

Rahul got in and started the engine, the warmth of the car instantly contrasting with the cold, wet outside. The rain beat heavily against the windshield as he drove in silence for a few minutes. Clara could feel his occasional glances in her direction, but she kept her eyes on the road ahead.

Finally, Rahul broke the silence. “You really shouldn’t be out alone in weather like this.”

Clara turned to him, a small smile tugging at her lips despite the situation. “It wasn’t exactly my choice.”

He chuckled, and for a moment, the tension between them eased. Rahul wasn’t the smooth-talking flirt she had heard about—at least not right now. He seemed genuine, maybe even kind. It was a side of him Clara hadn’t expected to see.

As they neared her neighborhood, the rain began to lighten. Rahul pulled up in front of her house and turned to her. “You’re safe now.”

Clara looked at him, grateful for his unexpected help. “Thank you, Rahul. I don’t know what I would’ve done without you. I really owe you for this.”

Rahul leaned back in his seat, his eyes thoughtful for a moment before a smile spread across his face, the hint of mischief returning. “If you really want to thank me, how about you let me take you out sometime?”

Clara blinked, taken aback by the sudden suggestion. “Take me out? You mean… like a date?”

Rahul shrugged, the easy smile never leaving his face. “Why not? It could be fun. No strings attached, just a thank-you.”

Clara hesitated, unsure of what to say. She had heard the stories about Rahul, seen him flirting with half the girls on campus. But this was different. He had been there when she needed someone, and despite her reservations, there was a part of her that was curious. Maybe this would be a way to repay him after all.

“Okay,” she said, surprising herself. “Just one time, to thank you.”

Rahul’s grin widened, clearly pleased. “Deal.”

As she stepped out of the car and ran to her door, Rahul watched her disappear inside, a strange feeling stirring in his chest. This hadn’t been like any of his usual encounters. Clara wasn’t like the other girls—there was something about her that made him want to know more.

And Clara, despite her caution, found herself wondering what this new side of Rahul could mean.
