Fantasy Pursuit of an Artist (Completed)
That night was unusual for people of Basanti. Suddenly out of nowhere, a storm hit and within an hour the roads stood empty. Electricity lines were cut and wole Tehsil was soaked into darkness, Just faint moonlight of Basant panchami was calmly poured all over the town.

The whistling air was dancing in the ground floor room of Ghosh babu’s property that he had rented to Paresh. As if humming the words of the devil. Paresh had become stable by now, after finishing the rituals and it was evident that he had pleased the supernatural force that held the power to make his desire come true. To make his landlady, the ultimate beauty, go with him; to become his, forever. Where nobody could disturb them.

And suddenly something happened at the centre of the painting. The painting, which was waking up lively every moment, showcasing various entities in the picture coming live, one by one, started turning into a round dark hole. Door of some different world has been opened and started sucking in the surrounding air into it. Just like a suction pump.

—————

On the above floor, Deepesh stood up afraid. The light cut off gave him goosebumps. His anger for Divya hasn’t vanished. Though he equally cared for her, had it not been darkness, he probably wouldn’t have visited her room.

“Mummy?” He called as his knock at the door went unreceived. But he couldn’t hear anything from her. He stood there, for a good 2 minutes and for every passing second, his mind started thinking about the weirdest possibilities and none of them were good. He finally dared to push the door ajar, to peep in his parent’s bedroom. And he was frightened like hell.

The room had no light, but through the moonlight falling on the bed, he saw Divya lying on the bed. Her hairs were all free, her pallu was displaced and she was rolling on a bed like a snake. She didn’t look like a sane woman at all. There was a jerk in every movement of her, like a fish out of water and her heavy breaths and hisses depicted her to be in trance.

Deepesh spellbound watched her acts, with fear and disbelief. He found his throat choked as he tried to call her and suddenly it happened.

She sat up impatiently in the bed, and took hold of a pillow in between her legs and laid back. She again started her hisses and Deepesh witnessed the most dreadful act of his own mother rubbing her groin on the pillow held between her legs.  And between all that hisses and noise of the wind, Deepesh clearly heard the name - “Paresh…. ummmm.” The call out was so intense and he did notice the eagerness and desire in that voice.

Very afraid Deepesh, ran to call his dad to come as soon as possible. It had been already late and due to a sudden eruption of a storm outside, all the doors and windows were banging with the wind. He dialled a couple of times, but the call went unreceived. “Maybe he is on the way to home and will reach here anytime,” the poor kid hoped.

Now he needed to do his best till Ghosh babu would arrive. Deepesh was afraid as hell, but he knew the criticality of the moments, and that he couldn’t afford standing still.

The first thing he did was to lock every door and window properly. It was then time to light candles all over the house, he found the packet of candles in the drawer and in the next two minutes all rooms of the house were lit; apart from his parental bedroom.

Now it was time to go to that room. With a big, lit candle, he stepped towards the bedroom and the candle slipped off his hand and his eyes widened due to disbelief: The bedroom was all empty!

He ran to the door to see it was locked; all confused, he collapsed on the ground thinking about how his mummy could leave the house without opening the door? And he then heard some movement in the bedroom. Hope lit up, he again ran to the bedroom and peeped in.

It was a mixed feeling for Deepesh. He was happy to see Divya was still at home and probably was in the washroom. But the bad part was that she didn’t look like the Divya he knew as a mother. Her facial expressions were a bit tense and a bit of redness was apparent in reflection of her face in the mirror. And what striked him most was she getting ready like going to the function; doing make up standing at the mirror. And Deepesh couldn’t help but notice that she had worn exactly the same saree as the lady painted by Paresh.

At this moment he was completely blank. But he carefully locked the door from outside, and came back to the hall. He picked up the phone and started making repeated calls to dad as it was already 12 in the night. Again two calls went unreceived but, with the third one, he got to hear Ghosh babu’s voice at the other end.

“Hey.. Deepesh… I can’t hear you properly. Don't worry khoka. I am just 5 mins away, and have stopped by a house due to a storm.”

“I don’t know Papa, come home right now,” Deepesh cried out of panic and at the same time he heard a big banging noise on the bedroom door and his hand let go of the receiver.

“Who the hell dares to lock me… open the door.. Let me go…,” It was Divya’s voice only, but a bit hoarse this time, full of frustration and anger.

Deepesh was smart enough to know that he did not need to listen. He collapsed on the sofa, clearing his sweat.

And then she started banging the door with the fullest of her force, cursing, using the words Deepesh never ever thought his mother would even know. And he shivered in the coach, putting both his hands on ear and in 5 mins all the noise settled.

He felt something was fishy.

“Has she tried and abandoned the plan to get away? Or she has slipped away… Oh no.” Deepesh again got disturbed.

He slowly moved to the door and put ear to it. But it was pin drop silence. His heart started beating fast again, “Has she been out through the window?” one of the possibilities striked his mind. But he was still careful, and slowly, without making any noise, he unbolted the door. And at the very same time, he heard the firing of Ghosh babu’s bike and another loud noise in the verandah.

He ran and opened a window to see Ghosh babu’s bike had slipped and he was lying on the ground with the bike on him. Deepesh literally ran downstairs and within the next minute he was near Ghosh babu, who had stood up by that time.

“Papa… Come see Mummy.. She is..”

“Yeah, let me lock the bike first,” he said, picking up the bike.

But Deepesh started pulling him by his hand. It was an abnormal act from a calm child like Deepesh and Ghosh babu also noticed that something is not correct and he followed him as they both reached the house.

“See.. Mummy.. She is behaving so weird.” Deepesh burned out in tears, still standing in the hall as he saw Ghosh babu entering the bedroom.

“Where is she? she is not here.” Ghosh babu yelled from the bedroom.

There was silence! Ghosh babu calmly came out of the bedroom. Looking at Deepesh.

“Have you checked the bathroom?” Deepesh’s trembling voice broke the terrifying silence.

“She is not there”

“Papa. I think I know where she has gone,” Deepesh nodded to his father’s clueless gaze.

“Just follow me” Saying this Deepesh ran downstairs and Ghosh babu followed.

“Oh Papa.. Come fast,” Deepesh cried like anything as they ran downstairs, to the house they had rented to Paresh.

This time he didn’t bother at the door and pushed the door open with all his force.
