It was only a few days until Saturday, and Spencer was already overlooking his Friday visit to San Diego with his friend Chris. He called Zach to tell him that he was in trouble for drinking too much and could not take him to Comic-Con on Saturday. Zach was bummed, but Spencer promised to make it up to him by going on a camping trip to Lake Tahoe.
The only thing left for Spencer to worry about was what he was going to wear to the convention. He had planned on wearing a t-shirt both days and not getting into costume. The thought of matching his mom, though, and making it look like they were together, caused a change of heart.
Similarly to his mom, Spencer was not a Star Wars fan. In fact, he had only a passing interest in comic books and movies. He liked tv shows that involved using computers to catch criminals, which sometimes overlapped. Spencer needed to search online for costume, or 'cosplay', ideas to match his mom. He discovered a few solid options, but one option was perfect. It was so perfect that it could make his mom feel uncomfortable.
"Hey I'm thinking of wearing this costume Saturday. It kind of matches yours. This character is Leia's son so it works on that level too. Is it cool if I wear it with you?" In a text message to his mom, Spencer attached an image of a shirtless Kylo Ren, who, as Spencer had just learned himself, was Leia's son with Han Solo. Kylo had long black hair, and Spencer's was a medium-length brown. But if his mom could be a blonde Leia, then Spencer did not think it mattered.
Twenty minutes later, Breanna responded, "This is your thing & you bought the tix. I wouldn't tell you to not wear something. I guess it would match & make sense. I'd prefer ppl not know we're mom & son but I get stared at anyway. Guess it's up to you."
It was not a no, and that was all Spencer needed to order the costume parts.
