Spencer's mind immediately went to his DNA and fingerprints on the missing heel. He doubted the cops would go to those lengths for something like this, but he was beyond scared of being busted. "Mom, I mean, if he ran off scared then he won't come back. What did he see that was so bad? A bunch of people in cocktail dresses and ties having drinks?"
Breanna struggled to respond. 'Umm, yeah, uh, pretty much, I guess."
Hoping he could get her to quit, Spencer added, "I've helped the FBI before. I know law enforcement would feel pretty disrespected if they had to take time away from serious investigations because someone looked into a house during a cocktail party."
"Yeah, maybe," Breanna sighed, concerned and frustrated.
"And then they'd have to get statements from everyone. They'd have to waste time going around to all the people at the party and asking what they were doing just before he was seen. They'd try to figure out why he was spying and whatnot. It's just a wasteful process."
Suddenly, Breanna was on the hot seat. The last thing she wanted was for the security officer to ask her what was going on at the time and for anyone to find out. "You're right. We definitely shouldn't get the cops involved. I'm actually gonna call Theresa right now to make sure that doesn't happen. We need to just drop it and move on."
It was victory. Spencer ate his breakfast with a glass of celebratory orange juice. He had been sweating bullets and felt like he was on the brink of disaster when Theresa had called. But now, he could no longer be caught. The security cameras did not recognize him. He had parked so far down the street that his license plates could not have been captured by the neighbors' cameras. And with that, the only chance left was for the cops to go to extraordinary lengths to catch a Peeping Tom- and his mom was nipping that investigation in the bud to save her own skin.
Even if they were to find the missing heel, Malcolm would have to link it to Breanna. Since he had to have inspected the crime scene by now, and Breanna had not been told of a found gladiator heel, that loose end was also tied.
With his troubles him, Spencer felt relief, but he also felt something else. He kept thinking about how his mom had used his dad in so many ways to put herself in a position to cheat. It felt wrong, but Spencer was more aroused than he had ever been in his life.
