They pulled out of the driveway and took off in the opposite direction.
What the hell was that? Maybe they had misread the invitation and were on the verge of being rudely late? Maybe they were bringing food and risked being late for dinner? Either way, as Spencer turned into the driveway and shifted his car into park, he was certain that his parents were acting strangely- mainly his mom. And he had no clue why.
The confused and suspicious son stepped out of his car, orange juice in hand. He racked his brain for an explanation.
He was so far in thought that he nearly missed the shiny object to the left of him. Narrowing his eyes to see it in the dark, Spencer could just make out what it was. He walked over, bent down, and picked up a shoe.
It was a brown heel with crossing, darkish-gold straps. It looked like what a gladiator would wear on a fashion runway, except it had no back straps. It was almost as if a stem were glued to the heel of a step-in sandal.
His mom's stumbling when getting in and her reaching out from the car suddenly made sense. What did not make sense was why she did not tell Bill to stop the damn car so she could grab it. It seemed unlikely that they would be running so late that Breanna was fine with showing up in one heel.
In his gut, Spencer knew the string of odd behavior was connected. He knew his parents were avoiding him and did not want him to see them leaving. He suspected his mom was behind it, and it bothered him that he was being left in the dark.
Spencer wanted to investigate. It was in his nature. It likely was not anything serious, but once Spencer suspected something, it became impossible for him to let it go.
