Fantasy Pursuit of an Artist (Completed)
#93
The small kid - Deepesh somehow gathered the courage. He has to. He went to the bedroom to check if his mother was well. Looking at Divya spread on the bed, with her displaced pallu and messed up hair, his stomach ached. His mother was not like this, never ever. Suddenly he got angry,  “Why does my innocent mom have to bear all this? Is this the destiny God has written for our family? Or .. or as I suspect, ‘he’ is behind all this?” His heartbeats increased, and he decided to proceed with the plan that was thriving in his mind.

He carefully bolted the bedroom door ensuring no-noise will be made and tiptoed down the ladders to get to the ground floor. It was against his innate nature; so Deepesh was feeling extreme fear but he was determined to relieve his dear mother from the strange suffering; at any cost. He stopped for a minute at the last step, observing at the door of the room that has been rented to Paresh. The door was a bit ajar and it took Deepesh a bit time to confirm he cannot be seen moving to the door from inside.

Very carefully he reached the door and from the slit he peeked inside.

—

The room was empty.  But Paresh has not been out for sure; otherwise the door would have been locked. Deepesh was quietly observing with tension building with every passing moment. He could see a painting in work, a beautiful woman walking away! But there was much to be done, especially drawing the lower back portion and colour part.

But where were all the painting tools? And suddenly he saw the brushes arranged in a row on a strange cloth spread on the floor. Deepesh was utterly confused; he can ofcourse understand brushes need cleaning, but spreading it like this looked like madness.

And suddenly Paresh entered the view from a corner. So quickly he moved, holding two bowls in either arm. Deepesh backed away from the door, frightened, was he bare waist up? It seemed so. For one moment Deepesh felt like running away, but somehow he controlled the anxiety. He has to figure out if this Paresh is behind strange things happening to his mother.

Carefully, he again fixed his eyes to see inside. But before seeing anything he got a strong odour from inside. “My god, does it smell like faeces? This bastard shits inside the room?” hesitantly, he opened his eyes and saw the most weird thing in his life!

Paresh was only on his undies.. His pale body was all bones and skin only. Both of his hands were carrying wounds as if pierced by countless needles; and when Deepesh looked  at those sunken eyes of Paresh, his legs literally started shaking. His eyes were all white! As if pupils had been washed out from his eyes.

He was chanting some strange mantras and in between dipping his fingers in the two bowls before him and waving it before the brushes (As if offering something to deity?) and then rubbing that dirty thing on his chest. In between he used to hiss loudly and bow next to the brushes with head touching the floor.

This was beyond belief for the poor kid. He started sweating like anything. With fright, his legs felt powerless and before he could understand he crashed on the door, opening the door and finally falling flat inside the room!

Paresh literally jumped!

But looking back at Deepesh, he was relieved. But it still took him some time to understand the situation, he is just a kid! Though, he still wanted to cover up the things quickly. Of course, he couldn’t afford anybody getting suspicious of his ambitious, dark plan. He reached for the shirt and wore it immediately. And pulled a chair between to cover up all the dark worship he was performing.

Deepesh was all blank watching Paresh coming to him.

“Hey champ.. How come you are here?” Paresh was surprised to see this overshy boy himself coming to his place. Has he seen anything? He thought to himself.

Deepesh stood up with a gaze down, like a criminal.

“What happened? Do you want something?” As Paresh got close, the odour became unbearable to the point that Deepesh would be vomiting.

Without thinking too much, he said, “Mom is not feeling well so…” While saying this, his face had become so bitter.

“Oh.. Divya is not well, Common lets go and see.” Paresh moved with excitement.

“No uncle.. She has just asked for some medicine if you have,” somehow Deepesh managed to say, “ She is having just a bit of a headache.” Of course, he wanted to keep him away from his mother.

“Ok..” Paresh looked at Deepesh with suspicion. “Isn’t this boy possessive about his mother? Whenever I was around?” he thought. “Has he got a premonition of what I am trying to achieve?”

A quirky smile appeared on his face. “I will give you a decoction (kadha). Ask your mother to drink it in one go.” She will be okay within a minute.  He turned and brought a bottle from a cupboard. Looking back at Deepesh with a fake smile, he moved. But near that chair, he stopped to bend there and did something that Deepesh was not able to see as his acts were covered by his body.

As Deepesh gulped, he was handed with a glass.

He turned back and started walking stairs, cursing himself why he talked of mom’s health? But what else could he have explained? Almost getting caught spying on this dangerous man?

When he reached the door of his house, he peeked into the glass. It contained colourless liquid as clear as water. But it was not, this he was very much sure about. He was just about to empty that glass when Paresh called out from the ground floor, “Remember… Whole glass in one go.”

Deepesh smiled faintly, thanking that he didn’t get caught emptying that glass on the floor. He quickly ran to the kitchen basin and bumped into Divya!

“Easy boy…” she said to Deepesh who was all sweating and coincidently the glass went to her hand. Deepesh literally fell down with the excursion. Divya put both the glasses on the dining table, yes, she was in the kitchen to carry water for herself. And bent to pick up the boy. “I am okay… I am okay..” Deepesh said and stood up only to notice that the glass had been handed over to Divya and now there are two identical glasses on the dining table. Both “seems” to be containing water only.

“Mummy… just don’t drink anything,” he panicked.

“Why?” Divya was irritated.

“Please mummy… Just listen to me,” he cried helplessly.

“Ok, Ok.. Bring me another glass of water” she said.

“Deepesh picked up one glass and ran to bring her water. He emptied that glass in the basin and with a shivering hand he somehow opened the tap and that was not working!

He looked back to Divya helplessly, slowly falling on ground, all defeated. Divya, who was looking at her son, raised her eyebrows with frustration and put the other glass to her lips.
