The cops, I must say, were very polite and professional in their approach. They offered me tea and snacks and told me to relax. They also told me that since they were still in the process of ascertaining all the facts and proving the allegations against me, I was not to be arrested but will have to be at the security officer station till they have any further details of my case.
About an hour later, Maj Gen Sharma (He was in service at the time of this incident), who was a course-mate and a close friend of my father walked into the security officer station, his two sahayaks in combat uniforms were behind him. He asked for the sub inspector and was pointed towards the sub-inspectors desk.
He walked towards where the sub inspector was sitting and conversed with him, both of them constantly looking towards me. Sharma Uncle had a sympathetic look in his eyes, he gave me an assuring smile.
He then took the phone which was next to the sub inspector and spoke with someone, I guess higher authorities in the security officer department. I was sure then that I would be let off. But if that turned out to be the case, how would i still prove my innocence? I would have to worry about that later, right now the urgency was to be released from the security officer station without any charges leveled on me. I will worry about everything else later.
After what seemed like hours, it was just about 10 odd minutes, Sharma uncle handed the phone back to the sub inspector who spoke to someone on the phone and then disconnected.
They shook hands and I was asked to come to the sub inspector's desk. I first touched the feet of Sharma Uncle who stood up and hugged me. That was reassuring. The sub inspector told me that I was being released from questioning for now. I can go. He warned me though that I should be available for questioning anytime they asked me to. I agreed and gave my address to them as required. Sharma uncle bore witness to the release and signed the release register. We left the security officer station. A huge burden was released from my heart and mind. I was silently crying all the way to Sharma Uncle's home.
It was half past 8 in the evening.
The next few days I remained with Sharma Uncle at his house. This was just to ensure that no harm came to me if i stay alone in my apartment. My father and sharma uncle had planned everything. The next few days also were days where I had to be present at the security officer station, sign on the register that i was present and came in for questioning. Infact they never questioned me those remaining days and let me go after getting my signatures on a register.
A week later I was called to the security officer station again. When I reached the security officer station I saw the company reps sitting there. Das was there, Mukul another member of my team and two other gentlement who I had never seen before.
Ofcourse I wasnt alone. A captain who was the reporting officer to sharma uncle and a sahayak were with me, just in case. That gave me solace and a sense of security.
Apparantly, in the last week or so some kind of discussion had happened regarding my case between the company and the security officer authorities handling my case and they had come to a conclusion.
I was being let off by the company of all the charges, but my job was not to be given back for some reason. I was assured full compensation and a letter of recommendation by the company. I wondered what turned the tide in my favour. Surely it wasnt the call that sharma uncle made to whoever he spoke with at the security officer station. This was something else entirely.
Nonetheless, I was given a document to sign. I read it completely, in plain and simple terms, I was being let off. I asked why in the first place did the company take such a step if they had to let me off.
Das said he was not aware of the situation and that Reddy had taken the decision to let me off.
I re read the document, consulted with Captain Yadav and then under his assurance signed the document in duplicate. The second copy of the mutually signed document was handed over to me in witness of the sub inspector and Capt. Yadav.
I was let off. Simple. No questions asked. No answers given.
