Sometimes the greatest journey is the distance between two people. What's more incredible is the fact that in some cases despite living together for years, these distances only increase with the passage time. Do we always have time to cover those distances if we want to or are there comes a time when it's too late?
Sahil was sitting on a couch watching live golf that he had no interest what so ever in watching but surely it was much better than watching, one of the news channels repeating the same news stories thousand times a day. Not far away his wife, Deepika was sitting in the drawing room as well reading some novel she had already read twice. If it wasn't for the sound coming from the TV then there would have been pin drop silence in the house. Both of them had been married for 20 years and after all those years this is about as intimate as it gets between them these days. Both of them were in their mid 40's and were proud parents of a boy who was happily living abroad for a few years now. After a few hours of watching grown men dressed in ugly clothes hitting a small ball on acres and acres of beautiful greens only to walk slowly up to the ball only to hit it again, he got bored and turned off the TV. His gaze slowly turned towards the woman sitting not that far away from him reading the same awful novel he bet she read countless times already. Is this the same woman he once fell in love with when the first time he saw her years ago? Time has not been kind to her he thought. What's with those grey hairs that she no longer cared about dying anymore or the few wrinkles that he can spot on her face? Is this the same beauty that all his friends used to envy him for? There was a time when he used to know all about her needs but now sometimes whenever he saw her, he used to wonder what is she thinking? How is she feeling? What have they done to each other? What will they do? He shook his head as if to stop thinking about her and turned the TV back on and started switching between the channels until he came across a cricket match. "Great, 15 grown ass men standing on the field playing with their balls from time to time, is just what I wanted to watch on an exciting Sunday." He thought to himself sarcastically.
A few minutes later, Deepika got tired of reading the same lines she have almost memorized by now and closed her book. Not far away she saw a man sitting like a couch potato with balding hairline and pot belly watching some stupid cricket match. Is this the same man who the girls in their college used to call prince charming behind his back all those years ago? We were childhood sweethearts but who will believe that seeing us together now? What went so wrong along the way that now we have to consider if it's worth the effort even if we want to speak with one another? She wondered, deep down in her mind she knew the answers of her own question but sometimes you can't help but wonder about the things you already know about.
Deepika:"Do you want something to eat?"
Sahil:"Just a cup of coffee." He replied without taking his eyes off the TV. A few minutes later Deepika came back with two cups of coffee and handed one of them to him. Maybe it was the effect of the caffeine she was getting from her cup of coffee or maybe she was just bored to death by doing nothing worthwhile and wanted to chat just to feel alive again.
Deepika:"Are you watching this match?"
Sahil:"Well that's what I'm trying to do at least. Why? Do you want me to switch the channel?"
Deepika:"No I....I just wanted to talk with you."
Sahil:"About what?"
Deepika:"Anything."
Sahil:"Like?"
Deepika:"Like why is it so hard to even talk with one another now even when neither of us has anything better to do?" Hearing that, Sahil took a deep breath and turned the TV off.
Sahil:"Look.....I'm not in a mood to fight with you. So just come to the point, if you have one."
Deepika:"I'm tired of all the arguments and pointless fights as well but do you know what I'm most tired of?"
Sahil:"Reading the same novel again and again in hope of it having a different ending this time?"
Deepika:"Very funny but no. I'm tired of living just for the sake of it. I'm tired of being bitter about the fact that my husband doesn't love or care about me anymore." She said that and started sobbing. Sahil didn't bother to comfort her or to wipe away her tears.
Sahil:"Is it that time of the month again?"
Deepika:"Oh fuck you."
Sahil:"Fuck me? No fuck you for acting as if we are a newly married couple who just had a fight over some stupid argument. It's way too late to just make up and start playing home again. You should have thought about your husband's love when you slept with my best friend. It's because of you that I lost my childhood friend."
Deepika:"Were you thinking about me when you cheated on me with your secretary? As for your so called best friend, he always used to hit on me even when you were around but you never discouraged him did you? The only reason I end up sleeping with him was to teach you a lesson after I find out about you and Pooja(Secretary) and you know that as well."
Sahil:"Have you ever thought about why I even started to sleep with her in the first place? It's because you only let me sleep with you once a month when I was about to go mental with a hard on. Whenever I was in mood you were either tired or had headaches. I'm a man as well and I have my needs. Maybe I would have never cheated on you if you had taken care of my needs like a wife should."
Deepika:"You were always selfish and only thought about your needs. I had a job as well back then and afterwards I took care of your parents, house chores and our kid as well. So excuse me if I was tired most of the time after working like a maid all the time. If you were not so stingy then we would have had a maid to help me with the house chores and I too would have taken care of my needs with you. Instead of appreciating me you acted like a jerk and started sleeping around with that whore."
Sahil:"Stingy? We were saving in order to buy a bigger house in case you forgot. The one we are living in now. I'm tired of giving excuses Deepika, and have no reason to lie anymore. It is what it is. Have I left you for her? No. Have I even left you after you slept with my best friend? No, but do I still love you? No I don't and you know that as well. So don't expect any miracles. Too much has happened between us and things can never be the way they once were. Sometimes I wonder why we are still together. Yes there was a time when we were in love and then we got married and then all we did was resent each other, try to control each other. We caused each other so much pain. Yet still we are together. Why?"
Deepika:"Because that's what marriage is." Both went quite after that and started to look at one another. In their eyes there was sadness and pain and maybe just a hint of the love, they once had for one another.
