Indian Princess
It was a dark cloudy day. It was about to rain, the cold wind was howling across the valleys. Sanjana was sitting next to her husband Sahil as he drove the car across the roads in the mountains. They were returning home after having spent a vacation together. The road was carved though a dense forest, it was curvy and dangerous. On one side she could see a deep valley, so deep that it didn’t seem to have a bottom.
Sanjana was visibly disturbed. “Why are we going along this road, Sahil?” she asked.
“We'll reach home early” he replied, “Someone told me this is a shortcut.”
“Can we go some by other route?” she asked nervously, “It’s so cold here...and scary...”
“Isn’t that romantic?” he laughed and continued driving.
“I am not getting a good feeling about this place...” she said as she nearly shivered in cold hold her arms close to her body.
“What is it?” he asked out of concern, “Did you have a bad dream again?”
“Dream...maybe, but it feels so real...I know this place, I have seen this cliff before...something very bad is going to happen...”
“Hush!” he interrupted her, “Don’t get me wrong sweetheart, but the mind is a powerful thing, don’t let negative thoughts control you...the shadows in your head are clouding reality, don’t let that happen...”
“I can’t....” she said tearfully...”It isn’t in my head, it is real!”
Suddenly the car stopped. They had run out of fuel.
“I told you!” she screamed, “We shouldn’t have come here, how did we run out of fuel when the tank was full when we left?”
“Calm down honey, I am sure there must be a logical explanation to this” he said, “I’ll go and get some help, you stay here and lock the doors of the car.”
“NO!” she screamed, “Don’t leave me alone here...I am very scared...”
“Sanjana” he said as he shook her firmly, “Snap out of it. All the bad things are in your head. Be brave. Let me find a ‘real’ solution to this problem. Don’t worry, you’ll be just fine sweetheart.”
She waited nervously in the car for a long time but Sahil did not return. Her heart was beating louder and faster with each passing minute. After waiting what seems like an eternity, she finally heard what she thought are his footsteps approaching. But those were not footsteps. It was something scbanging back and forth across the back of the vehicle. She was startled. Suddenly she caught a glimpse of a frightening misshapen figure in the rear view mirror of the car. She screamed and closed her eyes.
She slowly opened her eyes and the image had disappeared. She was trembling in fear. Was what she just saw real or just another imagination? She tried to close her eyes and take deep breaths, trying to calm herself down.
“Sahil will be back soon...it's ok, don’t panic, don’t panic..” she told herself as her comforting thoughts were rudely disrupted by a loud bump on the rear part of the car. She was now sure she wasn’t imagining anything. There was dead silence for a while and it was broken by a scbanging sound coming from the roof of the car. It was like something is rubbing its fingernails against the car. She tried to ignore the sound but suddenly the creature appeared again and started scratching wildly on the windshield of the car.
She shrieked and ran out of the car as fast as she could. It was so quiet all around, the only noise was her heavy breathing and the sound of dry leaves being crushed with her footsteps. She realized her were not the only footsteps she was hearing. She slowly turned and looked back and what she saw made her freeze. The shadow figure she had seen earlier was slowly moving towards her. The creature was hunched and had limbs at odd angles, with blood all over it. With an inhuman gait, it slowly moved towards her.
She ran as fast as she could, with the creature following her. It was getting darker, and she was lost in the forest, but she didn’t dare to stop. Even if she stopped for a second, she heard inhuman noises and grunts of the creature that relentlessly followed her trail.
Fatigue was taking over, she felt she was going to die of overwhelming fear and exhaustion. She ran till she reached the cliff she had seen before, in her dream. She had reached a dead end, she stood there trembling with fear.
Suddenly, she heard a low harsh voice in her ears. At first she felt it was just the wind howling, but when she heard it second time she could make out the words. The voice said – “Don’t look back!”
Fear had taken control of her completely. Maddening anticipation of what was behind made her turn back once again. The creature was standing right behind her. As she struggled to lift her gaze, he noticed the creatures oddly shaped legs and hands that had bones protruding out, patches of skin peeled and scrapped off. There was fresh blood oozing from the creatures body. At some places, the flesh was completely peeled off showing the underlying bone. It’s fingernails were broken, and it was bent in the back, with neck twisted as it looked towards her and its lips curved in a spine chilling grotesque smile. When she looked at its face, she was petrified. She screamed hysterically and jumped off the cliff.
When she regained consciousness, she found herself lying on a hospital bed. Sahil was sitting right next to her, looking at her full of concern. He wanted to know what happened. Before she could speak, she looked at the mirror on the wall and screamed. In the mirror, she saw the exactly same creature that had chased her.
