SOLUTION: a short story of love!
hadippa
After their love marriage, when Komal came as a ‘bahu’ in this family she was 25 and Dhiraj, her husband 26. Bimala Devi, her mother in law, was a widow of a strong personality but was friendly with her bahu. "Mujhe pota ka muh kabh dikhaoge?" Bimala Devi used to say before Tuku was born. It was hardly 3 months after that when Dhiraj had a car accident that paralyzed him reduceing him to an expensive burden for the family. It is unclear if he can really see or hear.
-"kisiki buri nazar laag gayi hai mere bete par", Bimala Devi says nowadays, “Ek bimar ho gaya, aur dusra sharabi."
-"Aap chinta na kijiye maaji, Suraj sambhal lega dhire dhire.”
Bimala Devi's 'ladla beta' Suraj was born to her in her late years. From his childhood Suraj was very demanding. There is nothing that he wished to have but he could not --- except one thing! Komal is tall, fair and beautiful; but these are not why Suraj feels the 'pull' towards her. It is her loving nature! Suraj doesn’t know what name could be appropriate for this strange attraction. Is it love, or a desire or just an illusion? Suraj turns 21 and Komal 30, but his feelings still remain bottled up deep inside his heart like a poem yet to be written!
-"Mere bete to koi kaam ka nahin rahe. Kebal tum hi kuch kar sakti ho bahu!"
- “Main? M’main kya kar sakti hun, Maaji".
-“Tabh tak bahut der ho jayega! Jo kuch karna hai, abbhi karna parega!”
-“Aap kehna kya chahte hai? Agar mere layek koi kaam ho, to bataiye!.”
A smile unfolds between the lips of Bimala Devi, but the lines of worries in her forehead belie her smile. "Jaisa ki tumne keh diya, karna bhi utna hi aasan tumhare liye", she says.
-“Maaji, mujhe kuch samajh mein aaye tabh to!”
Bimala Devi continues, " Kya tum nahin samajhti kiun mera Suraj har raat sharab pikar laut-ta hai? Kiun shadi karne se inkaar karta hai, jab ki mera dar ye tha ki woh Dhiraj se pahle hi na shadi kar baithe?"
-“Maaji aap chinta na kijiye, main raaji karwaoongi Suraj ko. Jarur karega woh shadi.”
-“Agar karega to woh bazaru 'Mini' se karega, jisse halat aur bigar jayega. Dekho bahu, agar ye sirf uska aapna zindagi ka mamla hota to main shayad itna nahin sochti, lekin ye pura pariwaar ke liye ek sawaal hai. Zara socho. Aagar us Mini ne is ghar mein apni jaga bana li, to Dhiraj ka treatment aur humara Tuku ka kya hoga?”
Komal knew from the day one, how Suraj liked her closeness, how an accidental touch made his breath fast, and how he looked on at her teeth when she giggled at his jokes. Unlike Dhiraj, who was cold in nature, Suraj feels warm! Suraj nowadays stares at her breasts more than before. Komal smiles and wonders why. May be, his weakness is her nipples, as they got larger after she became a mother.
-"Bahu! kya soch rahi ho?" Bimala devi starts Komal. "Dekho bahu, tum pari likhi ho....smart bhi ho, samjhogi. Hum sabki bhalai isi mein hai ki Suraj shadi hi na kare, ………lekin….”
-‘Lekin?
-“Jo chiz ke liye woh bahar rahta hai, woh usse ghar par hi mile!"
Bimala Devi's message is clearing off the mists now! But Komal wants it certain and direct.
-“Maaji aap jo keh rahi hai....mera matlab, main jaisa samajh rahi hoon ki aap keh rahi hai........ kya woh..."
-"Kiun na bhala?", Bimala Devi comes close and catches hold of her bahu's hands.."Suraj man hi man tumhe chahta hai. Main uska maa hoon, isi liye samajhti hoon.”
-“Maaji!!” She fakes a surprise, “ Kya ye paap nahin hoga? Agar kisiko……”
-“To baithe raho zindagi bhar apni paralysed pati ko lekar, aur dekhte raho barbadi!! Mahabharat nahin pari kya? Draupadi ke bare mein nahin suni? Sab halaat pe depend karte hai bahu."Bimala Devi leaves to another room!
Komal remains still, walking briskly through her pasts! It was hardly a month after her marriage, when she first caught Suraj right behind the door of her bathroom. She saw his image in the shiny watery floor as she soaped herself. She follows Bimala Devi to her room.
-"Maaji, main to utna khubsoorat bhi nahin rahi, aur Tuku hone ke baad,..."
"Ho! Ho!!" out comes her laughter. "Yaad nahin maine kya kaha tha tumhare shadi ke baad?"
Yes, Komal remembers and blushes again like she did when she had heard Bimala Devi say "Angrezi mein ‘Bahu’ ki matlab hai 'many', ek aisi aurat, jiski ek nahin, balki bahut saare rup hote hai. Ek mard ek aurat mein maa ki mamta ko dhoondte hai, aur ek byeshya ka besharmi ko bhi!"
"Jee Maaji", Bimala Devi is pleased as Komal begins to sound positive.
"Sambhog aur bhojan mein jyada farq nahin hota! Ek achhi parivesh mein ache se paribeshan karo, aur khane mein har paanch indriya, yaani sense organ ko mazaa do, tabhi mahaa indriya, yaani main organ ko mazaa aata!!”, Bimala Devi concludes without looking at her.
Komal looks at her watch and comes to her room. She spoon-feeds the evening medicine to Dhiraj. Wiping off the dripping medicine from his chin, she kisses him and whspers-"Sorry dear!"
Dhiraj looks on strangely from his bed as Komal enters the bathroom. She just remembers what Phholmati once said. Phoolmati is not only their maid but also like her 'saheli'. "Har mard ek jaisa hi hote hai. Daru pike agar koi adhi nangi aurat ko dekh liya, to samjho loha garam!", and she would laugh!
"Dhyat! kaisi gandi baaten karti hai re tu? Chhhi!" She would say.
She strips before the mirror and looks at herself. "Oh dear! Your mother in law is begging you to fuck her lil son! Please don't refuse!”, she laughs.
Suraj is much sober today as he had no plans to go to Mini. She wears a weird perfume and he hates perfumes! He wishes he knew if Komal bhabi wears any, or is it her natural bodily smell that lingers around her haunting him day and night?
