I felt one of the cops pull my hand.
"Ab chalo thane" I didnt know what to do and started following the cop in a trance
("Now come to the security officer station")


The other junior cop tapped on my wife's shoulder who had cupped her head into her arms.
She looked up.
"Chaliye madam, thane jaana hai", he instructed my wife
("lets go madam, we have to go to the security officer station")

I could see the desperate look on her face.
"5 lakh le lo abhi, take more later, magar please leave us", my wife pleaded with the senior cop
("take Rupees 5 lakhs now, and more later, but please leave us")

The cop started laughing.
"Paise to hum le hi lenge"
("We will take money anyway")

The junior cop started nudging her towards the door.
She lunged forward and tugged at the senior cop's shoulder , trying to get his attention
"pleaase no, please , you will destroy our family" She pleaded

I was feeling so bad and guilty. She is in this position because of me.


The Senior cop seemed very adamant at taking us to the security officer station. But suddenly he turned around and walked back to her.
"Theek hai, magar ek shart hai" He told my wife
("ok, but on one condition")


My wife was taken aback by suddenly the change of tone in the cop's voice
Even I was surprised.  But whatever be his condition it cant be good. But we both were desperate for a way out.
Even if we had to sell our house.

"Kya" my wife asked the cop
("what")


The cop made some face expressions, scratched his chest , looked at me and then at my wife.
Finally he had a smile on his face, a smile that I can never trust
 

"Jyotiji, agar dhande karne ka case nahi chahiye to aapko dhanda karna padega" The cop told her in a low, devilish voice
("Jyotiji, to avoid getting booked for prostitution, you have to become one" )


As he told in Hindi, Jyoti was trying to understand whether she heard him right !
And what he said , is what she is understanding.
And if so it was shocking and unacceptable
