I addressed this in CHAPTER 32: PART 3: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow also concluded that 'sex' is one of the basic needs, but it isn't. Later his model was updated. Sex is the only need that belongs at the lowest level, along with food and breathing, but also at the top of the hierarchy where psychological needs are placed.
Economists use a similar 'need' model to sell products to consumers, so these 'need' models have practicality.
