Chapter 7: Flashback:: He's leaving?
Friday, April 6th 2018
Barb was seated at her desk working on an important report which was due by end of the day. Sid had pinged her twice since morning but she did not respond. On top of that, their manager, Allison had scheduled a meeting at 2 PM for some important announcement.
"Very Busy today?" Barb looked up from her computer to see Sid standing near her desk.
"Hey..I didnt mean to ignore your messages. I am just loaded with so much work. Lets talk after the 2 PM meeting?" suggested Barb.
"No, it is urgent" said Sid. "Actually, let me not beat around the bush. I have received a great offer from a company on the West Coast. I submitted my resignation here. That is the news that Allison is planning to announce in the meeting. I wanted you to hear it from me before that".
Barb was stunned to hear the news. She regained her composure in a few seconds and smiled. "Congratulations! Sounds like a great opportunity. I wish you all the best for your new role. Let's talk later"
Sid walked away, a little surprised by the formal nature of Barb's reaction to the news.
The meeting with the team went as expected. Allison informed everyone about Sid's resignation and that his last day with the company would be in 2 weeks. She also suggested that they head out for a team lunch on the last day and everyone nodded their agreement.
That weekend was a restless one for Barb as she grappled with multiple thoughts in her head. She was not sure how to process this news delivered by Sid. What exactly was the nature of their relationship? Were they colleagues only? Friends? Or something more.
Barb knew deep down that she had a massive crush on Sid. An infatuation brought on by physical attraction. And there was enough to indicate that the feelings were mutual from his end too. But what about the rules of society? She was a married woman after all. Was it even Ok for her to be entertaining such thoughts in her head about Sid?
Barb always believed in doing the "right thing" This philosophy extended to her marriage decision also. Based on guidance from her elders, she chose someone with the right internal qualities instead of going for the best looking guy. It seemed like the sensible decision, but was she missing out on the thrills of life? She enjoyed attention and remembered the gushing compliments of her pals on Sid's pic and compared it with the lukewarm response when she sent pics with Sam.
Meanwhile, in his own apartment, Sid poured himself a drink and was also reflecting on his situation. Getting women was never too difficult for him. But this one, Barb, she was an enigma. Physically she was as good, if not better, than anyone he had seen before. Plus there was the angle of her being forbidden fruit. She was recently married and to a man who seemed to treat her well. Maybe there are some lines she will just not cross, he thought to himself. Its probably best that he was going away in 2 weeks.
