Chapter 1: The Introduction
Friday, April 20th, 2018
It was 5 PM on a Friday evening and Sam was at his desk, wrapping up his last emails for the week. It had been a hectic week, with some important client presentations, but the weekend was now within reach. Sam had been in America for 4 months now and despite the hectic work, he was enjoying the US lifestyle and the dollar salary that came with it.
It was also an extended honeymoon period in his marriage, having tied the knot just 6 months before making the voyage across the world from India to Dallas, Texas with his new bride.
Sam (actual name: Samuel) had grown up in Goa. Unlike the usual stereotype of Goans as party people, he was a more studious type. Having completed his Engineering, he was placed in one of India's top IT companies and quickly rose through the ranks in their Bangalore office, reaching management levels in just a few short years. Before long there was talk of him moving to the US to handle greater responsibilities.
His parents thought that this was a good time to broach the topic of marriage and despite his reservations, there was no serious push back from Sam. As he scanned the potential matches being suggested, he got a jolt. There, in front of his eyes, was the profile of Barbara (Barb).
Sam recalled Barb vividly from the college days. She was a peer of his- While he did Computer Science Engineering, she was in the Civil stream. More than her engineering skills, she was known for being the head turner on campus. Tall, Fair with long hair and striking facial features. All of those were often overlooked due to her stunning body: 34D-30-36 or as the guys said "Meat in all the right places". Her male admirers had code named her "Sunny" - no connection to Mr Gavaskar or Mr Deol but rather due to the striking resemblance to Ms. Leone
What do I have to lose? thought Sam as he decided to pursue this proposal. To the great surprise of many, including Sam himself, things clicked and within a few months Barb and he were headed down the road to marriage.
Sam was only too aware of the snide comments among common friends about how he had batted way out of his league or to use the more crass Hindi term "Langoor ke haath mein angoor". But, having won the lottery called arranged marriage, he took such comments in his stride.
