I thought I must have been dreaming but then I heard it again. I had fallen asleep at the desk as I was studying. still dressed in a T shirt and shorts as I normally do at home.

I walked down the stairs in pitched darkness. The nearest light switch was in the kitchen and since I was by now used to the house, I wasn’t worried about bumping into furniture. I walked into the kitchen and just when I was about to switch on the lights, I heard a man’s voice.

 “Oye…Lagta hai ghar mein koi nahi hai…” I heard a man speak. Even though he was speaking in a low volume, the roughness of his voice was apparent. In the still and quite of the night, I could hear him clearly. 

“Ha lagta to wahi hai. Car bhi nahi hai garage mein.” I heard another man speak. Like the first one, his voice too was low but resolute.

“Raat yahin bitate hai. Yeh log kal tak to wapas avenge aisa lagta hai.”

“Inki gadi to jaate hue dekhi thi maine…peeche samaan bhi tha…lagta hai kuch din bahar gaye hai.” 

My throat went dry and I started sweating immediately as it dawned upon me that my house was broken into. My first reaction was to hide behind the kitchen counter as quickly and as quickly as I could, I scampered behind the counter.

“Owww…” I heard one of the men groan.

“Oye Fahim…sambhal ke…security officer hamara abhi bhi peecha kar rahi hai, zakhmi mat ho jana warna peeche chod dunga tujhe” One of them said. He was now closer to the kitchen since his voice was getting louder and clearer.

“Tejinder…light chalu kar…Bhenchod…pair ko lag gayi.” The man groaned.

The names sounded eerily familiar. Even in that state of terror, I tried to recall where I had heard those names. A couple of seconds later I recalled that they were the same guys who were on TV in the evening. The dacoits who had escaped from jail.

With great effort I managed not to shriek as I realised the magnitude of misfortune that had landed upon me. Out of the thousands of places these men could have gone, they had broken into my house and that too on a day when Rohan wasn’t around. I was all alone in the house without any protection. All that stood between me and them was a kitchen counter.

The light switch was at the entrance of the kitchen which meant that they could not see me behind the counter even if they switched on the lights. I mulled my options and realised that I could get into one of the kitchen cabinets and hide till they leave but the house was so eerily silent that if I moved the door even an inch, the creak could be heard well into the living room.

I was trembling, rather shaking in fear. I had two murderous dacoits in my house, just a few feet away from me. My cell phone was in the bedroom and even though there was a landline in the kitchen, I couldn’t reach it without being seen. It was near the light switch and the Tejinder fellow was right next to it.

The lights came on the very next second and startled me. My eyes closed from the sudden influx of brightness in the dark room. I was now even more terrified! In the dark, at least I had a chance to escape, but now that the lights were on, I simply couldn’t move from here.

Some moments, later, the lights got even brighter and I knew they had now switched on the lights of the living room. Now there was nowhere to run without being seen. If I had to run from the kitchen to the rooms upstairs, I had to run from a well-lit kitchen to the stairs which were in the living room.
 
The two men were right in the path, one near the kitchen entrance and the other somewhere behind him in the living room. I didn’t know how fast these guys were but I knew I wasn’t fast enough to evade them and run upstairs. For now, all I could do was stay where I was and hope that I wouldn’t be caught.

“Gazab ka ghar hai yaar.” Tejinder said.

“Haan..maaldaar party hai.” Fahim replied.

“Chupne ke liye acchi jaga hai. Ghar mein pakka khana aur cash hoga.” Tejinder said.

“Haan…Agar kisine dekha na ho hame aur yeh log wapas na aye to do din yahan aaram se nikal sakte hai. Tab tak shayad security officer ka peecha bhi choot jayega”

I almost shit my pants when I heard that. Not only did they plan to rob my house but they planned to stay as well. Now what the fuck was I supposed to do.

I heard footsteps coming towards me. I froze in fear, not knowing what to do. One of them was now just behind the kitchen counter. I had my back against the kitchen counter and still wasn’t spotted but if he walked around it, I could be spotted easily.

I prayed for him to walk away but alas, I heard the footstep go around the counter. I saw the shadow of the man as he turned the corner and I knew I was screwed. I pulled my legs close and dug my head between my knees. I heard the footsteps coming closer to me…closer…closer…closer and then they stopped.

I didn’t dare look up but then the curiosity killed the cat. Since I hadn’t heard the footsteps for a few seconds, a part of me thought the man had walked away. A part of me wanted that to be true and so I looked up and almost shrieked in horror when I saw him standing in front of me, looking down at me and flashing a very wicked smile.

From what I had seen on TV, the man standing in front of me was Tejinder Singh. He was a large man indeed like most sardars are. He had a black turban on his head and he sported a thick, unkempt beard. The beard had not been trimmed in ages and almost covered his face. His bloodshot eyes along with dark circles underneath those eyes made him look terrifying.

He was tall, easily six feet with a muscular frame. Even though he had a large belly, he had a proportionately large chest and shoulders which toned down his abdominal girth. Large shoulders gave way to a pair of thick arms. The biceps, the forearms were large enough but his hands were large enough to cover my entire face.

I was about to cry as I realised that I was caught but this man was smiling down on me; not that it was pleasant smile but a very evil smile on his face. A smile that was so unnerving, it made me shiver the moment I saw it.

He was wearing a ragged white shirt and pair of pajamas. Thick black lines ran along the length of the shirt as well as the pajama. The shirt had a breast pocket and the number sewn on it. The clothes were dirty, god knows when they were washed last and smelled terrible.

He pulled up his shirt a little and I stumbled back when I realised he was pulling out a gun. I saw on TV they had killed the prison guards and were serving time for murder so the moment I saw the gun tucked under this shirt, I thought this was it. I was beyond terrified; I couldn’t even scream.
