Unicorn and Fairy


A solitary hut stood in the midst of a huge meadow. Behind the hut, there was a huge dense forest. Beyond that forest, there were snow peaked mountains. Smoke was bellowing from the chimney of the hut. There was a small garden in front of the hut. Several kind of flowers bloomed in that small garden. Little birds were chirping in that garden. There was a small pond behind the hut full of lotus and lily. In that hut, an aged Fairy Godmother used to live with a beautiful young Fairy. The Fairy Godmother possessed a valuable enchanting potion named as “amour-propre”. That potion could make any one blind of their surroundings.

Every morning, Fairy Godmother used to feed her with juicy fruits from her little orchard and dew, collected from the blades of grass. Honeybees used to bring her honey every morning. Yet she felt that she was not happy. She felt a void in her tiny heart. She wanted to fly to the mountains.

The brown wooden window was open. The beautiful Fairy was looking outside the window. Her braid was of silver white in colour, as if those were woven from the soft rays of moon. Her lifeless huge wings painted with colours of rainbow and peacock. She was wearing a huge flowing blue silk gown with tiny silvery stars all over. Her dark big eyes were filled up with several queries. She was observing those birds. Weavers, nightingales, larks, sparrows and many others were chirping outside. She lost herself in those chirps.
All those birds were asking her “Come out Fairy, fly with us.”
She threw a small kiss to those birds and said to them---“I cannot fly. Fairy Godmother never taught me to fly.”
The birds fluttered their small wings and flew away saying that they were flying to those snow peaked mountains beyond the forest.

Every day the beautiful Fairy asked the Fairy Godmother---“Why don’t you teach me to fly?”
Every day the Fairy Godmother used to answer the same---“The world is full of terrible peoples and horrible creatures. I am here to protect you. Every day I savor you with succulent juicy fruits. Honeybees bring you honey. You won’t get these lavish goodies anywhere, Dear.”

Whenever the Fairy Godmother used to go out, she used to etch an enchanting circle around the house so that the beautiful Fairy could not run away. The Fairy was sad. She wanted to fly. She always dreamt of going to the mountains. She wanted to play in the snow. She wanted to dance in the soft rays of dawn. She wanted to sing along with the river.

On one dark new moon night, the crescent was above the top of the forest. The beautiful Fairy was looking outside the window, to the Prussian blue sky. Stars were twinkling on the huge curtain overhead. The fireflies were flying and the crickets were buzzing all around. She was humming a sweet tune and was nodding her head. Fairy Godmother was out for some work in the new moon. As usual, she etched the enchanting line around the periphery of the hut.

All of a sudden, the Fairy heard a faint sound. She was surprised and terrified to hear that sound. She looked around her, but she could not find anyone in the hut. She heard that knock again. The knock was coming from the door. She tip-toed to the door, with a porcelain vase in her hand. She opened the door and found a strong milky white Unicorn was standing there. She was surprised to see the Unicorn. She was terrified also. The Unicorn nodded his head and neighed gently. His neighs gave some assurance to the Fairy that he meant no harm to her. The Fairy stepped forward and gently caressed the neck of the Unicorn. The Unicorn neighed again and rubbed his face on the beautiful face of Fairy. The Fairy looked around the hut, but was unable to find anyone other than the Unicorn. She ushered the Unicorn inside the hut.
