The telephone rang. Samina got up to answer it.
"That sounds great, Derick how long are you going for?" I asked
"I usually go for six to eight weeks this time of year. I help them out with repairs, and anything that might need fixing up, that way I don't feel like a useless leech. And they appreciate the free help a lot. Plus it's great to be with the little one too."
"So what were you doing before retiring, Derick?" I finished my cognac and did not go for a refill, as I noticed that Derrick had finished his took and put the snifter away, clearly not wanting more.
"I was an engineer working for the aircraft industry," Derrick replied proudly. “Nearly 35 years with Boeing, and would have kept going, had my health not required that I quit. I still consult for them occasionally.”

We talked for about half and hour about technical matters. There was no doubt, that Derrick had a very nimble, and technically savvy mind, and I enjoyed talking to him. He had heard of my company and actually had a few friends working there. He was really impressed by our modern manufacturing facility.
Finally, Samina returned. "Sorry about that it was only my mother, calling from Pakistan to chat." She revealed as she sat.

“Of course darling,” said Samina. As she went to the kitchen, Derick's eyes followed her.
“I need to go the washroom.” Derrick said to me.
"Sure, just go to the lobby, its under the staircase,” I said and Derrick went on his way.
While both of them were out of the room I pretended to have received a phone call from work.
Samina returned with the coffee. “Umer, we are nearly out of this Turkish coffee, you like so much. You need to get more."

"I don't think so. Going by what the shift night manager was describing saying it should not too long to fix. It seems like a simple calibration issue, but I'll know more once I get there. With any luck, I should be back in about 2 hours at the earliest."
"Isn't there anybody else who could do it?" Samina asked.
"Oh sure there is, but I was the lead designer and software architect of this line and the boss said that for the first 12 weeks or so of operations, if something went wrong, I was to be first person they contacted, as I could probably fix the problem before anyone else could.”
"Oh, well I suppose you'd better go then," Samina said seriously.
I looked at my watch. "Look it's nearly a quarter to eight if I go now I'll be back by around ten or so, if all goes well. " I turned to Derick and added, "You'll look after Samina for me, won't you, Derick?"
"Yes, of course I will!" Derick replied with a weak smile.
"Okay I'm off then see you two later." I kissed Samina on the forehead and left.
I drove the car a couple of hundred yards up the road and parked. From there I hurriedly walked a few yards along the pavement and turned down a rear access road that runs along the rear of the houses. I then entered from the back, and went up the garden path to the back door, and quietly entered the house and straight away heard Samina and Derick chatting.
"With the way the weather was today I didn't think I was going to see you, Samina." Derick said.
I quickly and quietly moved through the house and stood next to the wide open lounge door.
"The weather was so crappy this morning we didn't think we'd make it over there. We went shopping instead." Samina replied.
"I was packing up when you arrived. Why did you invite me over for dinner?"
"Well Umer thought it would be a good idea for us to have a neighbor over for dinner, and I agreed. " Samina replied drinking her coffee.
“You don't think he knows do you'?" Derick asked voice full of concern, "I don't want there to be any trouble."
"A bit late for that isn't it." Samina laughed.

"Did I give you what you wanted? Did you not like what I did to you?" Derrick was now being a little aggressive.
"Yes, yes as I said yesterday it was good but I . . ." Samina stammered.
"But nothing, come on let's have another session." It was more of demand from Derrick, than a request.
"I don't think so," Samina spoke put softly. “I am not sure its a good idea.”
"Come on, we've not got a lot of time before your old man returns. Besides I go away on Monday and won't see you for several weeks. Come on stand up." Again, it was an order rather than a request.
"But . . ." Samina sounded unsure.
"Don't waste the moment, Samina stand up." Now Derrick was totally demanding.
