Sandeep slept fitfully at night. His sleep was disturbed by occasional visions of Vijay and his mom as a couple- holding hands, laughing, kissing, hugging. He twisted and turned in his sleep and continued. At one point his dream took him to their life as a couple and he had this blurred vision of his mom lying on a bed and Vijay next to her. After a few blank moments all he could see was his moms face which was obviously covered with pleasure and her hands grasped by Vijay. The vision continued for a bit till he woke up sweating. To his surprise it had made him all aroused as he realised, he was hard. Why am I aroused? Am I going mad? Is there anything that can be done now? Should I accept this now that everyone seems to be more or less okay with it? So many questions that were left in his mind. He wished someone gave him a clear answer. And all of this was tiring. As he lay there, sleep took over and his eyelids closed slowly.
Sandeep woke up at dawn and went for a walk. It was the weekend and he wanted to go for a long walk as a way of clearing his mind. As he left the apartment and turned right, his phone buzzed and he took it out. It was a sms from his aunt
“Good job, heard from your mom that you accepted her choice. So proud of you Sandeep”
Shit, this is moving faster than I thought. He immediately called her
“Hi, good morning. There is a confusion I think”
“What confusion? Well what I told maa was that he was not a bad person. But that doesn’t mean I want her to..”
“Stop it Sandeep, you are turning to be really difficult. Now what are you going to say to her?”
“I don’t know”
“Well if you don’t know then listen to me. Go tell her you are happy to see her happy and you will support her relationship”
“Are you serious?”
“I am damn serious. You better do it right now.”
“I am out for a walk”
“Then tell her when you reach home. Nothing less. I am done with your childish behaviour on this. I understand you but this is just too much. You are an adult and so is your mom. You are not her owner by any stretch of imagination. She is actually being nice and waiting on you to support this. And she was delighted yesterday when you spoke to her. Now don’t spoil it for yourself”
“Spoil it for me?”
“Yes for you. You don’t want a situation where she goes ahead with this in spite of you. That will not be good.”
Crestfallen, Sandeep knew it was actually true.
“So, do as I say and well find someone for yourself. If you cannot do it, then I will do it for you. Part of the reason for all this is that you are alone and lonely. But darling you mom cannot fill that emptiness. Understand and move on”
Sandeep just cut the call. He walked further till her saw a cart where the guy was selling hot tea. He ordered for one and sipped on the hot sweetened tea for some time. Yes, that’s right, I will just forget about all my thoughts and let them face the consequences later. It will hit all of them when things go down and then everyone will know that I was right. Yes, that’s it. These people don’t even understand what I am saying. However, with time when they know the bad side of things, they will come running back to me – maa, her sister, everyone. And then I will remind them of how I tried to talk sense to all of them and they acted as if I was immature.
Sandeep almost sprinted back to his home. His new approach to what he was facing gave him energy and he finally seemed to find his bearings. He reached home and smiled at his mom who opened the door. Whether it was a smile of compassion or a smirk at her pitiable future situation that he had envisioned he did not really know. After around twenty minutes, he walked out to have breakfast freshly showered and dressed in smart casuals. He ate happily humming a tune occasionally in between his meal. Once he finished, he decided to face it. He walked to the kitchen where his mom was setting aside the dishes for washing.
"Maa, lets talk for a bit"
"Are you going out somewhere?"
"No, not in the morning"
"Then give me few minutes, I will wash these plates and come"
"OK. I am waiting"
Sandeep went and sat on the sofa and put on the news.
His mom washed the plates slowly wondering how their talk would go. She felt a sense of nervousness about discussing her marriage with her son. But it had to be done and there was no point putting it off. As she finished the plates and cups, she wiped her face with a towel, went to the hall and sat next to her son.
"Tell me son, what it is you wanted to talk"
