Sandeep called up his aunt and had a long conversation. He told her what had happened and how his mom seems to like the guy who was working for him and how she is not willing to change her mind. His aunt heard him patiently and noted his concerns. But her response was not what he expected. She asked him his concerns about the relationship and all he could come up with was that Vijay was his driver. To her this was not adequate to stop the relationship that had blossomed. And this made him even more frustrated. He had placed a lot of hope on being able to get her on his side and convince his mom to drop her plans.
“What is your real concern Sandeep?”
“Real, what do you mean byt this question?”
“I mean, what are you really worried about?”
“Look how will she live as his wife?”
“Why? Is he not a normal man? Do you think he is a bad person?”
“Not bad but..”
“But what? Try to be a bit objective. Do you have any reason to think he is a man with bad habits or any negative character defects?”
Sandeep was silent for a bit. His mind tried to look for anything that he could provide as concrete
“He wont be able to keep mom happy”
“Ok that is a good reason now tell me why you feel so”
“I mean he is from..”
“From?”
“He is from a poor family and a different culture and well she will have to really adjust to a very different way of life.”
“Hmmm, did you at any time place these as conditions for her when she began looking to remarry?”
“Well, not really?
“Why?”
“I don’t know? I thought she will find someone suitable!”
“And you are yet to give me any real reason to show this man is not suitable. Plus Sandeep who needs to decide that, you or your mom?”
Sandeep was crestfallen, he knew where the conversation was heading and he did not like it.
“Can I tell you something my beloved nephew?”
“Yes, aunty tell me.”
“I can understand the confusion you are feeling. But I think it is more of over protective behaviour which I feel is not really required. You cant cage her beta. You need to let her be free as a woman to make her choices and give her that space”
“Oh...”
“If she has not found him unsuitable, then it is really not your place to say that.”
“Do you think you will feel ashamed that your mom married him?”
“I don’t know”
“I think the answer is yes. Someone who worked for you, now taking over the place of your stepdad can be difficult to accept. But life is not about easy choices. I would suggest you let your maa take decisions about her life and not act like a supervisor of her personal life. And don’t forget, whether she married him or remainder single, nothing will change her relationship with you. Infact, if you are more supportive, she might see your point clearly than resist it which is what I think is happening now.”
“Ok, if you say so.”
“I will also talk to her and see what she thinks, I will try to explain your feelings to her. But it is best if we allow her the freedom to choose.”
“Ok, and will you let me know how the discussion goes?”
“Ofcourse, I will. You take care of yourself and don’t worry too much. Your mom is a mature grown up woman. She will not do something silly.”
“Ok thank you so much aunty”
Sandeep could feel everything slip away from his well laid out plans. As he finished the call, he walked over to a nearby shop and bought a cup of tea and a cigarette that he puffed away.
Mala, was worried when the conversation with her nephew got over. Her worry was more about her nephew but she could understand him. And his attitude was making her sister grow defensive as well. She decided to text her sister
“Hi, call me, wanna talk to you when you are free”
Once she texted her sister, she sat back on the chair and wondered what she was going to say to her sister. Actually, there was nothing much. She knew that her sister was fond of this man and she had told her all about it. Even before Sandeep’s call she knew what was going on and wondered if it was Oedipus complex that was rearing its head in her nephew. But whatever it was she realised there was little that he could do. Her focus was now on softening the blow on her nephew and getting him to accept this relationship and the impending marriage that was bound to happen.
