I returned from my work trip after a few days and Mom was happy to see me and welcomed me with a hug and a kiss.
“How was your trip?”
“It was good maa. What about you? Hope you were not bored sitting at home.”
“No, I am fine. Do you need to go to office today?
“Yes maa. I need to go may be a little late but I have few meetings to attend”
“Oh ok then I will get breakfast ready for you”
I had a shower and got ready for office. When I came out mom had arranged the table and sat next to me while I had hot dosas that she had prepared.”
“Hmmm, so tasty”
“Glad you like it, we must find a good girl for you to marry so she can take good care of you”
“Why the hurry, I am just 28. Atleast two more years before I will settle down”
“Well I think that’s too long. We must not delay things like this.”
“Ok we will talk about it later.”
As I was leaving home, mom came to the door and smiled at me.
“Come home early if you can. I want to talk to you about something”
“Oh what is it?”
“Well come early and we will talk.”
I left home and reached office and checked my email for anything from my boss. Nothing so far. The office boy came in with a hot cup of coffee and I sipped on it while I browsed through my phone. As I opened my Whatsapp, I saw a few messages and read them one by one. Finally I came to a message from Mom that she had sent a few minutes ago.
“Sandeep, I like someone and he likes me too. I hope you will like him as well”
Ah this was news, who was this? Was it someone she was talking to from the matrimonial site or was it someone else. I replied back to her
“Tell me who is it”
Within seconds moms was online and replying.
“The same person who I told you about”
“Which person?”
“Oh my busy absent minded baby, the one who contacted me from the matrimonial site”
“Oh ok”
“Did you not check the profile I forwarded to you.”
I could not answer a yes or a no. I remembered her sending me an email and I had just looked at the brief details. He was based out of Delhi and was a widower with two kids. That was all I remembered.
“If you have not checked then you better check it before you come home”
Curiosity slowly got the better of me and I got hold of her email. She had also sent her user id and password so I logged into the website and looked at his profile. He had a small business and two daughters I read. By then I got a call from my boss and got occupied. Soon my first meeting of the day came by and I was busy. Around 11 am I had messages on my phone including moms.
“Did you check or are you not interested. Tell me the truth”
“I checked and read his profile, seems ok. But could not find his picture or anything on it. We can talk in the evening today without fail.”
I kept my phone down and went for my second meeting of the day. When I came back to my cabin I took my phone to check for messages. Mom had sent me a message and I opened it.
“He is a nice guy” Following that was his picture and my eyes popped out. What is this….
There was no mistaking the picture, it was Vijay Singh my former driver. What on earth is going on. I dropped my phone on my desk and sat back on my chair. Not it can’t be. How can my mom be in a relationship with a man who till some months ago was driving me around and addressed me as Sir. My hands were shivering as I picked up my phone again.
I opened the Whatsapp message again and read it. She had sent another message.
“No reaction?”
Oh my God, what on earth had happened? My colleague walked in to my cabin and noticed me all pale and slumped in my chair
“Hey. Are you okay?”
“Ah yes I , I am fine.”
“You don’t look fine. What is wrong?”
“I, I I have a headache”
“Man are you sure. This seems more than just a headache”
“Ah it’s a severe headache man”
“Well why don’t you get a strong cup of coffee.”
He went out of my cabin as I was trying to fight back my tears of confusion and returned with a cup of coffee.
“Drink it you will feel better.”
It took me some effort to gulp down the coffee. The entire world seemed to be spinning. What on earth. My mom likes Vijay Singh. How is this possible!
I had one more meeting to attend and there was no way to avoid it. I sat through it absent mindely and my boss who noticed it asked me to stay back in the conference room after the meeting.
“Dude, are you ok?”
“Yes boss, I am ok. Just got a headache.”
“Well then take a day off and rest. You seem pale and lost”
“No its ok boss, I have some work to finish.”
“Work can wait, I insist you take the day off and if need be tomorrow as well and rest.”
I did not answer but made a pale effort to get up gather my papers and leave. I did not want to go home. Not with the knowledge of what was going on in Mom’s life. No, no, no. An hour later I calmed down. Maybe she had spoken to him a few times and found him to be a nice chap. I will go back and tell her who he was and I was fairly confident she would decline him and would continue to look for other proposals. I felt guilty as well. She had repeatedly asked me to look at profiles she had forwarded and tell me what I felt. If only I had taken that more seriously. I gathered everything and slowly made my way to the car park. I sat in the car for a long time not knowing what to do. Finally, after about twenty minutes, I started my car and began driving back home slowly. I had left early and ironically; the traffic was a breeze and I was near our apartment earlier than expected. I waited out for some time and then finally made my way resolving that I would talk her out of this, and she would see sense in what I was about to share with her. How on earth could she live with him as his wife. No, I was not going to allow it and I was feeling somewhat confident that if I put my foot down she would listen. For the first time in my life I cursed Vijay Singh
“Bastard, you want to marry my mother. That is not going to happen. Go find yourself someone from your own background.” I muttered as I parked my car and made my way to the elevator.
“How was your trip?”
“It was good maa. What about you? Hope you were not bored sitting at home.”
“No, I am fine. Do you need to go to office today?
