Thirteen months later...

Ritu and Rudra were back at Topchanchi. 


This time it was not Durga Puja but Deepawali, the festival of lights and unlike last time, there was a warm welcome for them. Chotu and Budhia were waiting for them at the garden gate and at the door of the main house was Savita herself, resplendent in the finest finery. 

In her arms and sleeping peacefully on her shoulders was a little baby.

"Oh hello Rudra, Ritu .. what a pleasure to see you again."

"I am back," smiled Rudra, "Just as I had said I will."

"Come, come ... come let us go into the drawing room."

"Things have changed a lot here, Savita."

"Yes," her voice dropped to a whisper, "after the Thakur passed away."

"What happened?"

"It was all very sudden. You know about a month after you left, just before Deepawali last year, my pregnancy was confirmed." She smiled. "Even though I had known it all along."

"And then?"

"The Thakur was all agog with excitement ... even though he was quite puzzled, as you would of course know why." She smiled, so did Ritu.

"That evening he was in a generous mood and decided that he will give me a big gift ... a family heirloom or something. Then he took me to the inner bedroom, you know the one behind ours." Rudra and Ritu nodded, of course they knew.

"Then there was this calamity."

"What?"

"There is a safe in the room and the Thakur had always the keys around his neck, but that night, the keys failed to open the safe."

"Really?"

"The Thakur went berserk. He was in a towering rage and threw a huge tantrum. I don't know what was there in that safe but he was so upset that night that he had a cerebral attack and passed away before daybreak."

"That is sad."

"I have no regrets. He was so very abusive that I think it was deliverance. I am quite happy now with Chotu and Budhia to manage the house."

"That's great and of course you have wonderful baby." Ritu said

"And I know whom I should thank for him." "But what was there in the safe?" Savita asked...

Rudra had a quizzical smile on his face.

"I have no idea"

"Let's take a look."
