Sharma: “oh I see”. Then he glanced at ramlal. I could see the contempt in his eyes in the way he was looking at ramlal as if he did not approve of him being in the lift at this time.
Sharma addressing ramlal “aapki tariff”.
Ramlal “ji main madame ke office mein kaam karta hoon, voh aaj unki tabiyat office mein bigad gayi to boss ne mujhe kaha ki inhe ghar tak chod ke aao”.
I was surpised hearing this. How fluently ramlal had lied in one breath without thinking. He was really fast on his feet as if he tackles such situations very often. I felt bit relieved as there was some truth in what he had said also and I prentended not to be feeling very well.
Sharma: (immediately showing his concern) what happened to you dipti ji. Do you have fever.
Without wasting time he touched my forehead with the back of his hand. “you have slight fever, I think you are about to catch cold, you got wet also, u must take care of yr health cos there is no one to look after you, pls come to my place I have some medicines and I will make hot coffee for you”.
Sharma often used to call me to his flat but I always used to refuse politely. My mind was thnking fast now. I thought that it may not be a bad idea to go to sharms’s flat as if I go to my flat then ramlal is surely not going to leave me and will definitely try to enter my flat and it will look suspicious to sharma ji as to why I’m allowing a peon from my office to enter my flat and that too at 9 pm at night. I decided to take sharma’s offer so I immediately nodded to him. this was the first time in 3 years that I had agreed to go to sharmas flat without my husband being present. (with my husband I had been to his flat only twice that too first time to see his flat and 2nd time to have a cup of coffee). Sharma gave me a very happy smile and was looking so happy as if he’s just climbed the mout Everest
The lift stopped at our floor and all 3 of us got out. I was quite nervous as I did not know how to tackle ramlal under the present circumstances and how these two males will react. Ramlal on the other hand was looking quite relaxed and confident. He had a concerned look on his face as if he was really concerned about my safety and was keen on escorting me safely to my place. Sharma was looking very happy, excited and also nervous at the same time. He was fumbling with his keys and I could make out that his hands were shivering at the door step and finally manged to open the door and stood aside allowing me to enter his flat after switching on the lights.
Before ramlal could enter sharma ji blocked his enterance and offered his hand to ramlal and said “apka bahut bahut shukriya madame ka khayal rakhne ke liye, good night” and he slammed to the door on his face. I took a sigh of relief as if a disaster was prevented. Under the present circumstance I could not help but thank sharma ji inwardly for saving me from a very ebarassing situation. I would have surely ended up on the bed with that rascal if I had not met sharma ji in the lift. ( how easily did I get carried away with my emotions). What was I thinking of? Bringing a low class man to my flat and giving him a clear signal that I was willing to get laid on the bed for him. .
