Aditya felt numb to everything as he sat in front of his laptop. He had studying to do but couldn’t get his head to start working again. It felt as if his head was filled with cotton. After spending an hour staring at his work and not even having started, he went to his bed and curled up in a fetal position, staring at the wall. He was in this position for several hours before he finally fell unconscious.
Waking up bleary eyed, Aditya rubbed at his eyes with the back of his hand before resuming the lifeless stare he had on before falling asleep. Looking at the window, he didn’t see any light coming in which meant that he hadn’t slept for very long. Looking at the clock he realized that he had slept for almost 2 hours. His heart still felt heavy and it took all of his willpower to walk the few steps into the washroom that was connected to his room. He stared at himself in the mirror. It looking as if he had aged 20 years with the beginnings of black circles under his eyes. Feeling his strength give away, he put the cover of the toilet down and sat on it, his head held up by his arms. The tears came out again and he hated himself.
He began wondering what was wrong with him. Why was he destroying his parent’s marriage just to get his rocks of? He was manipulating his naive mother into committing adultery with a man who was a loser in real life. He had no job, was scamming the government and living off disability. If that wasn’t enough, he was ugly with a beer gut.
A memory flashed in his mind and he began remembering that day which his mind couldn’t handle, so it had blocked it. It happened right before they came to Canada. He had just celebrated his 16th birthday after skipping college with his friends and they had all ended up at their home. With his dad out of town for a last-minute business deal before they left for Canada in a few days. This was the last time he would hang out with his friends, so it came as no surprise when they wanted to continue partying at his house.
His mother was home at the time and they had put on some good Hindi songs playing in the background while they all danced and sang along. He remembered his mother was happy and dancing with them too, though she mostly stayed out of it and laughed at their silly dance moves.
Things had gotten a bit blurry after that. He remembered them saying cheers and clinking glasses before drinking the Lassie that one of his friends had made in their kitchen as his parting gift.
