Whatever Gets You through the Night Pt. 21

"From the depths of Hell in silence,
cast their spells, explosive violence.
Russian night-time flight perfected,
flawless vision, undetected."

-Sabaton, "Night Witches"

The DM took out some pre-gens.

"Ok," he said. "Who wants the rogue?"

Contessa Helena de San Finzione and Nigel Mander's hands both shot up. Mander saw and asked if there was something with "a big 'fuck off' sword" in there for him instead. D&D had turned out to be more popular in the film industry than Helen had imagined, and other similar groups were meeting in taverns around them gathered on the stone floor of the set.

Helen suppressed a laugh when Suzy-Q emerged from behind a natural column on her knees, dressed as Dungeon Master from the old "Dungeons & Dragons" cartoon. She said that Mander could have the rogue and excused herself from the group.

Helen searched for someplace private where they could speak. They began walking back toward the entrance.

"How're things going?" Suzy-Q asked, getting up from her knees now that the joke had been made.

"We're just choosing characters, but someone had a cool idea. There's one big dungeon, all our crews are gonna hit it from different approaches at the same time. Then, as we encounter each other, figure out if we're gonna kill the other guys or team up against the rest and split the treasure or what. But I'm expecting that since you're here, I'm clear to get us all out now. Maybe I'll hold a little mini-con at the castle sometime, because I like the idea. Or come back when they fix everything and have it here. A REAL underground gaming convention!"

Suzy-Q nodded. Susan was enough of a geek for her to know what a multi-party dungeon raid was like.

"Well, Susan would prefer if you stayed in the game and waited for them to come for you, but she also knows better than to try and stop you. She gave the word. Ramirez said to give them ten minutes to get the other side clear."

Helen walked to the edge of the set lighting and motioned for Mander to come join her.

"Everyone but Mander," she commanded them. "Concentrate on the game until someone comes for you. Won't be long now." The others accepted the command and continued their games of D&D or chess or whatever someone had brought with them. The two of them started making their way back toward the pileup.

"Suzy-Q's back, then?" Mander asked. "Everything's a go outside?"

"They will be by the time we're ready to blast." Helen replied. A little chuckle followed. "You know, in politics, when they say someone got 'blasted,' it just means someone else in politics was talking shit about them. Then they say that person 'took fire.' And if they reply, they 'fired back.' Trying to make it sound cool doesn't impress anyone."

"And here, Your Countessness is the only one who literally goes out and does it."

Helen and Suzy-Q both laughed at that. Because Suzy-Q was in Helen's head, she was keeping pace with them while standing still. It gave Helen's perceptions the dreamlike quality of running in place because although she was still moving forward, Suzy-Q never changed position unless she moved closer or further from Helen. Rubble and debris passed through Suzy-Q as she remained in place in Helen's line of sight.

When they reached the pile that stood between them and freedom, Helen gave everything a final inspection, then they started walking back down the hall.

"That previous explosion must've been right at the entrance. We were safe in the theater, but a homemade directional charge isn't perfect, we're gonna get a bigger explosion on our end. Since we don't have any safety equipment, we probably want to pull clear back to the set. Means we won't get to see it, dammit!"

`Mander nodded. Like Ramirez, he'd had plenty of experience seeing Helen's crazy plans work.

"I remember hearing guys saying stuff about how Igazi had some kinda magic that made him immune to bullets. After that warehouse in Seattle, you pull this off, and I'll believe you can't be killed by fire."
