Chapter 7: Wild Times With Danielle and Katie in Rotorua

Cyrus woke up a little hazy. "Mmmmmm... ohhhh yaaaaaaa." He moaned out loud and stretched his muscles, staring at the ceiling. "What a life. So lucky." He thought to himself. It was the 10th of December already, and he couldn't believe how fast his time in the North Island was passing. As his mind cleared a little, his thoughts suddenly changed to Rotorua and he bounded out of bed, preparing to leave.

Cyrus had booked himself into one of the most exclusive and exotic lodges in Rotorua, The Treetops Lodge, rated one of the best in New Zealand, and whatever Cyrus had seen online really impressed him. Though it spoke of sheer decadence and luxury, it somehow fit very naturally into the forested environment it was nestled in. It also boasted a fairly high eco-rating, which especially appealed to Cyrus.

The drive from Whakatane took hardly an hour and a half, winding through the countryside, passing several lakes and mountains, as it eventually passed through the outskirts of Rotorua, taking him straight into a forest where his lodge was located. He reached the wooden gates of the lodge, and a few seconds later they began to open. He slowly drove onto the gravel path and made his way along the windy road, through dense foliage and mist when suddenly the lodge came into view. The magnificent wood and stone structure stood amidst thick forest, jagged rocks and a cliff.

Cyrus parked the car and as he opened the door, the mist rolled in, bringing with it a cool breeze. As he stepped out, all he heard was the sounds of birds and a nearby waterfall. The gurgling stream running past the lodge provided ethereal acoustic effects to the already soothing soundtrack of the place.

He walked towards the main entrance, crossing over large stones and a small wooden bridge to navigate the stream. There were rock formations on either side, covered with thick green growth and types of moss Cyrus had never seen before. It was like a cool but tropical paradise.

As he approached the intricately carved Maori door, it slowly opened and a middle-aged man stepped out to greet him.

"Hi there, welcome." He said with a smile and stuck out his hand to shake Cyrus'. "I'm Stanley, the manager here. Come on in."

As Cyrus entered the lodge, he stood mesmerized at its grandeur. The thick stonewalls rose majestically towards the dark wooden rafted ceilings thirty odd feet high. To the right, the hall opened out into a seating area and a reception desk. There was a small bar and a café to the left. Straight ahead of him, down a few steps, was another seating area, with several different kinds of cozy chairs and sofas. A giant glass window covered the entire front façade, overlooking some unbelievable scenery. Just as the lodge ended, the cliff dropped several meters, right above a canopy of trees that stretched for miles ahead. In the far distance, Cyrus could spot several lakes creeping through the mist, and mountains that ran along either side of the view.

"My goodness Stanley. This place is amazing. It's so grand, and the view is priceless."

"Thank you. I'm sure you'll love your stay. Wait till you see the rest of the property, and all that we have to offer. I'll have someone show you around once you've settled into your room." Stanley said, feeling rather proud of the place.

"That would be lovely." He said, his eyes still scanning the hall as Stanley led him towards the reception. Once he finished the formalities, a porter helped him with his luggage and led him towards his cottage.

The passage wound through the right wing of the lodge, through a set of carved wooden doors leading to a passage outside. The stone pathway meandered through more dense foliage, along the same stream that he had passed earlier, passing several cottages before the porter turned left towards a small private cottage, hidden by trees and bushes.

The porter opened the door and stepped aside for Cyrus to enter. It took his eyes a second to adjust and admire the luxury and warmth that awaited him inside. Though the place spoke of utmost decadence, it certainly wasn't over the top. The sitting room was cozy with comfortable looking furniture and a stone fireplace. He walked further into the cottage towards the spacious bedroom, where the massive king size bed on the right, faced large windows that overlooked the same view as the main hall. On the left side of the cottage was a massive bathroom, offering some more of the same view, with a large and tempting tub in the middle.

As soon as the porter brought in his luggage, Cyrus filled the tub with hot water, popped open a beer and relaxed. He had read a bit about Rotorua and knew all about the geothermal pools being one of the major attractions. He had also read about a few stunning walks and drives around the many lakes in the region. He chalked out a plan for the next couple of days, showered and walked back to the main lodge to get some quick advice from Stanley before driving into town to get something to eat.

After a hearty lunch at a popular organic café in the bustling centre of Rotorua, Cyrus first visited couple of the most famous geothermal pools. He was then keen to get away from the beaten path a little, so he decided to go for a lesser-known walk that Stanley had suggested, where he found some more stunning thermal pools.

At the end of a long but visually stunning day, Cyrus returned back to his lodge. Though he had been amongst nature all day, the thought of returning to the lodge in the evening was always on his mind. Soaking in the bathtub again or nearly an hour, Cyrus was refreshed and ready to enjoy a lovely and quiet evening in the lodge. He sat in the main hall, next to the fireplace, with a bottle of wine and his laptop. He followed that with a decadent 5-course gourmet meal in the company of some wonderful guests, walked around the property to get some more fresh air and decided to call it an early night.

Cyrus spent a majority of the next day amidst the forests and lakes around Rotorua, walking and taking pictures of some more geothermal sites as well as some gorgeous vistas along the way. After the walk, he had scheduled a skydive at 4 pm, but with the inclement weather he had to postpone it, leaving him with rest of the afternoon with nothing to do.

Instead of heading back to the lodge, he decided to see what was happening in town since it looked so bustling the day before. He also remembered that the Twenty-Twenty cricket world cup had begun in Australia, and he was just in time to catch the opening match. He walked into a bar that seemed to be pretty busy, and the match between Australia and England had just begun. Loads of people were scattered around the bar, watching and seemingly supporting England in hopes of defeating arch rivals Australia.

Cyrus found a small opening at the bar and ordered himself a pint of Guinness. He perched himself on a stool and watched as Australia had already started amassing runs at a lightning pace. All Cyrus heard were ooohs and aaahs coming from the England supporters who were helplessly watching along.

"Oh, fuck them sods." He heard a guy yelling in front of him. "Unbelievable man. Come on."

"Can never stop the two openers once they begin their attack." Cyrus directed his comment to him.

"They're too bloody strong. You supporting England ya?"

"Ya. In this match at least."

"You don't sound like you're from around here." He turned to face Cyrus.

"No. From India. Cyrus." He stretched out his hand.

"Nice to meet you mate, Roger."

"Oh fuck, there goes another one." Cyrus raised his hands in despair. "So where're you from?"

"Queenstown actually. Just up here with a bunch of my mates for a few days." He pointed to a small group to his left. "Hey, guys, this is Cyrus from India."

"Hi there. John. Nice to meet you."

"Well hello Cyrus." One of the ladies in the group came a little closer towards him. "Danielle. Nice to meet you." She had a huge smile and gave Cyrus quite a seductive glance up and down.

She was fairly tall and lean, looking rather sporty in her track pants and tight t-shirt. She had a longish face with sharp facial features, piercing green eyes and a cute nose. Her smooth looking skin glowed in the dim light of the bar. Her long and shiny hazel hair was tied in a tight ponytail, cascading down to the middle of her back. The material of her t-shirt clung to the medium profile of her breasts before clinging to her flat stomach. She was absolutely stunning.
