Chapter 22

By evening, Das thanked me many times. As if it wasn't enough, he dropped himself at my home at eight with a gift which we both enjoyed sipping with ice cubes and soda.
"Your timely action not only saved my face but also avoided a big headache that I would never be able to get over. You truly saved my ass. I feel like I can't decide a suitable way to thank you. I owe you another treat for fooling my wife like that. You don't know how I'm feeling about this. A lot of happiness. I want to scream it to the whole world but it has to remain a secret. The only one I can share this is you, my friend."
He said excitedly.
"And Meera too."
I reminded.
"Yeah, that's true. I think I should call her. May I?"
We had had more than a couple of drinks.
"Sure. Feel yourself home Mr Das."
He rang her. I sipped the heavily mixed drink, putting all of my senses together to hear Meera's voice from the other side.
"I've got your message. It's okay Mr Das."
I heard her voice.
"I embarrassed you. Didn't I?"
Das softened his voice.
"I told you it's okay."
"I wish I could say this face to face.."
"You'll see me in the office tomorrow."
"Not in the office crowd, Meera. Somewhere else where we can be ourselves. How about leaving early tomorrow."
"What are you planning.."
"Nothing yet. Now I will."
"Have you thanked your friend?"
"Of course. He saved us. I owe him a treat."
"Me too."
"Really? I will tell him this for sure."
"Yeah, it would have been very embarrassing had he not made up that idea."
I was listening closely.
"Only thing that worried me was that I had to leave you alone."
"I wasn't alone. I had your friend for company."
Now Das looked at me.
"Did you like my friend?"
"Sure why not!"
"Are you planning to spoil him too?"
"Spoil? Have I spoilt you?"
"Very badly."
"How exactly is that, Mr Das?
"I can tell you exactly, honey. Earlier I used to think of work even when I'm home. Now it's you. You only."
"What's that much to think about me, Mr Das?"
"Everything."
"I wish you be a bit more specific."

It was obvious she wanted to hear more. Why isn't she dropping it? I thought, frustratingly.
"You're a wonderful woman, Meera. You're very beautiful yet un-self-conscious about it. You're very strong but I saw your feminine side today. Your smile in the day makes me smile even at night. I hear your voice even when you're not talking."
"You're again very flattering."
"Take it that way if you want. I meant every word of it."
"We should stop this Mr Das."
"Meera."
"Das we don't want to do anything that might embarrass you."
"Embarrass me? How about you?"
"Your embarrassment will be mine too."
"Don't beat around it, Meera. Speak your mind."
"Are you drunk?"
"I want to make a confession to you Meera. I'm attracted to you. I don't know how you feel about this. I can't hide it anymore from you."
"We better stop it, Mr Das."
He was proposing my wife right in front of my eyes. Sitting in my house, in my living room, on my couch. And I couldn't do anything about it. I had become a stone.
I didn't have a life.
Yet I couldn't blame this man for that.
She'll reject him. I hoped.

"Meera please give me some time. Tell me."
Das went on.
"Tell you what."
"Can I expect a smile tomorrow."
"Of course, you're my boss."
"Is that it?"
"My life is already complicated, Mr Das."
"We can make it less complicated."
"I don't think so."
"I do. Trust me."
"How's that?"
"I will tell you when I see you face to face."
"Okay then. Goodnight."
"Meera. Please. Please give me a reply so that I can go to bed with some peace of mind."
"Reply to what."
Das fell silent for a minute. He was done.
"Das, you better be with Neerja than putting yourself in a position where you'll have to depend on a lot of lies."
"Are you turning me down?"
"I don't want to hurt you."
"You won't. I feel the best when you're with me."
"Das..."
"I don't care what you think of me right now. I'm ready to get slapped by you a hundred more times. But I want to confess you this, that I'm in love with you. Let the whole world say that it's wrong but I'm. I speak what I feel."
"Do you realise what you're talking about? You're drunk, ain't you?"
"Yes, I'm. But I know who I'm and what I'm talking."
"Okay, I will believe you when we talk face to face. Tomorrow."
She hung up the phone.
Das fell back into the couch. Silent.
"Mr Das."
He looked up at me.
"Mr Menon, you've just heard this. I've just confessed my love to her. I just did it."
I found it difficult to talk now.
"Did you mean it?"
"Yes. Of course. I want this woman."
"In what sense?"
"I don't know. I want her with me. I want to speak to her. Keep looking at her. Listening to her voice. What do you call it?"
Love. I said in my mind.
Where is it taking you, Krish? I asked myself.
The man had truly fallen in love with my wife. I thought.

"How about Meera? Did she say yes?"
I asked.
"She'll say soon. When we meet."
"Okay. That's great news. So we wait for tomorrow."
I was thinking deeply about it.
"Mr Menon."
Mr Das stood up from the couch.
"Let's go right now."
"Right now where?"
"Let's go meet her. I know her place."
A lightning passed through my ear.
"What... What are you doing, Mr Das?"
"She said tomorrow. And it's already. It's five past twelve."
He showed me his watch.
"So what. What are you going to do there?"
"I will...I will just have a look at her face... Her beautiful face and... and will listen to whatever she has to say. I will bear whatever happens that. Let her slap me again."
"Oh come on. You're ruining it again, Mr Das. I suggest you stop for now."
"You haven't heard her voice, Mr Menon. You should have. If you did, you'd have helped me."

I didn't know how to stop him. The man was crazy.
"If you're not coming, it's okay. I'll go myself."
He declared.
I sensed that it would be more dangerous to leave him alone. I didn't trust him at that moment.
"Okay. I'll come. I'll drive. But you must promise me that you won't do anything stupid. Don't get physical. You're risking your life."
I warned.
"And you should not mention my name. I can't bear this crazy image of myself."
I certainly didn't want Meera to think I let it happen.
Mr Das promised me everything I demanded.
And, exactly at 12.55 AM that midnight, I pulled his car into the parking of Lavanya Apartments. I made him repeat his promises for the third time and let him walk toward the stairs at 1.05 AM.
The stairs that would lead him to a flat where my wife is probably sleeping and surely alone.

"I think he's just like Shekhar. In the beginning, he was very cool like a safe friend. But I'm telling you, eventually, he's going to seduce your wife!"
I remembered Meera uttering those words a few hours ago.
