But nothing changed for Virat. NOt that month. Not the next. Virat gave few interviews but there was no response back. He was end of his patience. Whatever little bank balance he had is gone... now he doesn't even have 1000 rs in bank to even have basic needs of man - like drink or ciggerette. Or going to movie. He can't ask Chiku for it. Already she is giving house loan, buying groceries and paying utility bills.
It made him feel lame and crippled. Seating at home idle made this feeling worst. So Virat will go out every morning and roam around aimlessly, till he was too tired.
One such day he was walking around chembur. Theer was a ad in morning paper for a walk-in interview and he had come to give it, but found huge crowd of at least 600 candidates already waiting. Still he had stood in queue patiently, waiting for his turn. BUt after 2 hours the security guard has come and declared there are too many candidates and everyone can leave after giving their resume. Virat has given his resume but he knew too well no call will come.
With nothing else to do, he was walking on the streets and watching evening crowd. Than he had come outside a small local bar, the signboard in front of it declared "happy hours - Cold beer only 100 Rs"
He had around 125 rupees in pocket and with a beer he could just manage to get a bus ticket back home. Ok, no food either - but what the hack, he thought. It was hot and humid and a cold beer will do good.
He had sat on a corner table in that dingy bar and ordered a beer. The room was small and smelt of stale food and ciggerette smoke. The people around was mostly working class drunkards, hardly anyone his level. That was just as good. Nowadays he avoided standard bars. Not only he could afford them, worse, he might come across some old friend or aquintence. He wanted to avoid them by all means possible.
Virat took long time finishing his beer, enjoying the taste. He was having beer after a month almost - nowadays it's all cheap run that he can afford. Soon, he won't even have that luxary.
The bar was getting crowded. Many patrons were standing in door, waiting for tables to get vacant. A waiter came to him twice and asked impatiently if he wanted more. He said no. He also showed no hurry to vacate. On his good days he would, but now he is immpune to normal courtsey.
Than a tall, slim man has wealked down to his table and asked if he will mind if he shares the table. Virat said he wont.
The man looked cunning - and not exactly educated middle class type, but he was well dressed and polite. Beside Virat simply didn't care. Anyone ok, as long as he is not a known person and dont ask probing question about his life and career and prospect.
Slowly they started talking - normal talks like 2 strangers on beer glass does. About cricket, politics, weather etc etc. Virat found the guy entertraining. His name was Tony and he could tell really funny dirty jokes, making Virat laugh after long time.
Soon Virat was telling him about his life & the deep shit he is in. Generally he wont tell this to anybody, but this guy was just a stranger and in another few hours they will part & never see again in their life. Virat needed to share his woes and worries with someone - and he found this guy sympathetic. So he told him everything.
Tony heard patiently and seemed really interested when he was talking about Nupur. He probed minutely about her - which airlines she works, which city she usually flies etc. etc. If Virat was not drunk, he would have found this little unusal - but he didn't. Rather he found himself obliged to satisfy his new friend's curosity. After all, Tony has ordered next 2 rounds of drink (with nice snacks) and laughed when Virat hesitatingly mentioned he didn't have much in cash with him. "No problem sir, today's drink is on me. It's hard tio get a interesting drink partner like you. Don't worry about cash, I just closed a deal & have enough in my parse" he has said.
So after few hours, sufficiently drunk, both guys have stepped out of bar & Tony had bought a full pack of Malboro ciggerettes for him. As he smoked (Tony didn't smoke), Tony casually asked him "So sir, have you thought about what you are going to do in future? I mean getting job is not easy as you said ..."
Virah shrugged "Yes, very tough. But what I can do? I guess I will ahev to keep trying and hope something works out - though I know it's not going to!"
"Have you thought about doing business?" Tony asked.
"Business?" Visrat was surprised "I know nothing about business. Beside I dont have any capital to start any fucking business anyway!"
"Oh, capital is not a problem ... it's just willingness to try out something new" Tony said enthuistacally "In fact, I have a proposal for you - if you are interested"
He waited for a minute and than continued "I told you right, I have a export business. Supplying high priced medicine to all over India. Generally I use courier, but they are slow - takes at least 2 days to send something from Mumbai to say Delhi. But our clients want it very fast because the medicines I supply are for critical diseases - patients can't wait 2 days for it. ALso sending through courier has other problems - paperworks. All the tax and other forms you need to follow and it delay things further."
Virat said "Tony ... I still dont know how I can help you there. I know nothing about courier business."
"Yes I know" Tony said patiently "See, I was thinking if we can use someone like madam (your wife) for sending the packets. The packs are very small, she can easily take it in her bag. And when she reaches destination, someone - my agent in that city - will receive it from her in Airport itself. No trouble for her. And in return I will give you good commission for each such delivery."
"How much" Virat asked.
"Oh... depends on medicine price. I will give you 10% commission. let's say 5 thousand per delivery. Usually there will be 3-4 delivery every week." Tony said.
Virat was thinking. Tony took it as negatibe so he said quickly "See bhai, normally I pay 5k only ... but since you are friend and she is your wife, I guess I can give little bit more - 7k per delivery. Think about it. It's good money and no trouble, just need to carry the packet that's all. If you agree tell me now, we can start business from next week."
Virat was making quick calculations. 7k per delivery and 3-4 times week will mean around 1 lakh+ per month. It's damn good easy money ... and it will help them to maintain their lifestyle a lot.
Only problem was Chiku of course. She will ask 20 questions. Beside, he too felt little unconfortable. "Is this legal?" he asked hesitatntly.
"See VIratbhai, I wont bullshit you. It's safe thing - medicine as I said, but not 100% legal. I mean when we send it this way, we save the tax and all. That's how I can offer you more than 10%. Flight attendents go through security check easily, no one checks them - so she will never get caught. Let's say even if someone catches the pack, she can always say it's medicine she carrying for some relative or so. Worst case, they will keep the pack - which is ok. I wont blame you or madam for it. I will give your commission still than. So you see, there is no risk for you. If at all, it's me who will lose money if she get caught."
"Hmm" Virat said "You will pay in cash?"
"Of course" Tony said "Usually half before trip, half after delivery, when my agent confirms delivery. BUt in your case I will pay 7k full advance before trip only. I know you are good family guy & wont cheat."
"I will need to talk with my wife" Virat said.
"Sure" Tony handed him a visiting card "My number in it. Call me whenever she agrees."
