"Well.. well, its 11 night and queen Victoria is still busy with her work!" Virat thought angrily as he twisted the glass in his hand. He took a sip and looked at the glass with obvious repulsion. It tasted yukk. No wonder - given it is 75 rs a quarter rum - which usually labors drink after hard day work.
During happy times, single malt whisky was his favorite. He preferred to have parties and drink with friends - not alone like this. Especially weekends (or days when chiku was off duty) he will invite friends at home, have lot of fun togather. Guys will seat and chat over drinks while chiku will be in kitchen or bedroom with womenfolks, telling them funny stories from her flight experience. It was fun and people loved to attend their parties.
Well, all that are gone now. After he lost job, he was confident he will find another quickly. After all he has good experience and recession doesn't stay forever. But things turned bad to worse and from worse to worst. Recession never ended fully and for whatever reason, he couldn't find a suitable job. At least initially he will get calls for interview. Nowadays this too has stopped. He hardly gets a call once in 2 weeks or so. No one wants to recruit a guy who is out of job for 6 months and couldn't find a new one - pwerhaps to employers it automatically denotes that the candidate is worthless.
His personal life has degraded likewise. Parties stopped, friends moved away. Or rather he avoided friends. Just can't tolerate they looking at him with sympathy and pity! And chiku? She is worst. Always busy with her work - no time to seat with him once and talk. Why a man marries? So that he has someone to console him when in distres. BUt not Chiku. She is happy with her airlines work and doesnt give a shit what he eats or drinks whole day.
Ting..Trinng ... the door bell rang
Virat put his glass on table and opened the door.
Nupur entered, her face was tired. "Sorry got late. Flight delay .. technical snag. Did u eat?"
"Tell me something new!" Virat grunted "Always some technical fault or other! And about diner - what you want, wait for u till 1AM night? Waiting when Miss perfect wife turns up and allow me to have my food?"
"Dont talk like that.." Nupur said in choked voice, tears falling from her eyes
"Why not? Oh I forgot. Because you are feeding me! I guess I will be careful from next time ... if you stop paying, I might have to starve and die." Virat said harshly. He wanted to hurt Nupur. Hurt her for being inconsiderate and selfish. For making him wait and long for her.
Nupur didn't say anything. She enetered bedroom and the door closed.
Virat waited close to door for sometime. Waiting for her to open door and come back. Say sorry to him.
Nothing. The lights went off. And he could hear sound of sob.
He sighed and sat on sofa again, picking up the glass. He lied - he hadn't taken diner, he was waiting for her. He knew Nupur hadn't eaten either.
Maybe he could have been softer with her. Tell her how much he misses her. Tell her how much he loved her.
But he couldn't control ... the anger inside. The feeling that he is dependednt on her for every small thing. He hated it. Hated entire world for his helpless situation.
"One day I will have money" he sipped from glass gain "Plenty of money. And than I will make chiku retire from this stupid job. And build a large house. Have kids. We all will have diner together every night. Than.." he fall asleep daydreaming.
