Raj: 23 years old. He lives in the house next to theirs and works in a workshop. He is a womanizer. Whenever he sees a woman he likes, he cannot resist pursuing her.

Chapter 1 — Look After My Wife
Vel and devi had been married for several years.
Their life was simple. Both of them had jobs, and they shared the responsibilities of their home. They lived in a quiet neighbourhood where most of the families knew each other.
Right next to their house lived Raj.
Raj was 23 years old and worked at a nearby workshop. He was not related to Vel in any way. He was simply their neighbour.
Because Raj had known Vel for quite some time and respected him, he called him “Anna.” Out of the same familiarity, he called Ankita “Anni.”
There was no blood relationship between them.
One evening, Vel returned home from work looking unusually serious.
Devi noticed it immediately.
Devi : “What happened? Why do you look so serious?”
Vel: “Nothing serious. I just received a call from the office.”
Ankita: “What did they say?”
Vel: “I have to go to our branch office in another town tomorrow.”
Ankita: “Tomorrow?”
Vel: “Yes.”
Ankita: “For how many days?”
Vel: “I'm not completely sure. Maybe two or three days.”
Ankita became quiet for a moment.
Ankita: “You could have told me earlier.”
Vel: “I only found out a little while ago.”
Ankita: “Where do you have to go?”
Vel: “It's a work-related issue. They want me to meet the manager there and sort out some paperwork.”
Ankita: “Will you come back in two days?”
Vel: “I'll try.”
Ankita: “You always say that.”
Vel smiled.
Vel: “What can I do? It's my job.”
Ankita: “I know. I'm not blaming you.”
Vel: “Are you worried about staying alone?”
Ankita: “Not really.”
Vel: “Then what?”
Ankita: “I just don't like you travelling suddenly.”
Vel: “I'll be careful.”
Ankita: “When are you leaving?”
Vel: “Tomorrow morning.”
Ankita: “Then pack your things tonight.”
Vel: “Already giving me orders?”
Ankita: “Of course. Otherwise you'll forget half your things.”
Vel laughed.
Vel: “That's true.”
Ankita went inside and started preparing his clothes.
After a few minutes, Vel followed her.
Vel: “Ankita.”
Ankita: “Hmm?”
Vel: “Don't worry. I'll call you every night.”
Ankita: “You better.”
Vel: “If the work finishes early, I'll come back sooner.”
Ankita: “Okay.”
Vel watched her for a moment.
Vel: “You know something?”
Ankita: “What?”
Vel: “I don't like leaving you alone.”
Ankita turned towards him.
Ankita: “Why? I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself.”
Vel: “I know. But still.”
Ankita: “Don't worry about me. Concentrate on your work.”
Vel: “Fine.”
The next morning, Vel got ready early.
Ankita prepared breakfast for him.
Vel: “You didn't have to wake up this early.”
Ankita: “If I don't, you'll leave without eating.”
Vel: “I'll eat outside.”
Ankita: “No. Eat properly before you leave.”
Vel smiled.
Vel: “Okay, Anni.”
Ankita: “Anni?”
Vel: “Sorry. I was just joking.”
They both laughed.
After breakfast, Vel took his bag and stepped outside.
Raj was standing near his house, getting ready to leave for work.
Raj: “Anna, are you going somewhere?”
Vel: “Yes, Raj. I have to go out of town for work.”
Raj: “Oh. How many days?”
Vel: “Maybe two or three.”
Raj looked towards the house.
Raj: “Anni will be here alone?”
Vel: “Yes.”
Vel then smiled.
Vel: “That's why I wanted to tell you something.”
Raj: “Tell me, Anna.”
Vel: “Look after Anni while I'm away, da.”
Raj immediately nodded.
Raj: “Of course, Anna. Don't worry.”
Vel: “I'm not asking you to do anything special. Just if she needs some small help, help her.”
Raj: “Sure, Anna.”
Vel: “If there is any problem with the house, water, electricity, or anything like that, just help her.”
Raj: “I'll take care of it.”
Vel: “Good.”
Vel put his hand on Raj's shoulder.
Vel: “I know you're nearby. That's why I don't have to worry.”
Raj: “You go and finish your work peacefully.”
Vel: “Thanks, da.”
Ankita came outside.
Ankita: “Vel, your cab has arrived.”
Vel: “Okay.”
He turned towards Ankita.
Vel: “Take care.”
Ankita: “You too.”
Vel: “I'll call you when I reach.”
Ankita: “Don't forget.”
Vel: “I won't.”
Vel got into the vehicle.
Before leaving, he looked at Raj.
Vel: “Remember what I told you.”
Raj: “Don't worry, Anna.”
The vehicle slowly disappeared down the road.
Ankita stood quietly for a few seconds.
Raj was still standing nearby.
Raj: “Anni.”
Ankita: “Hmm?”
Raj: “Don't worry. Anna will be back soon.”
Ankita: “I know.”
Raj: “If you need anything, just call me.”
Ankita: “Okay. Thank you.”
Raj: “No need to thank me, Anni.”
Ankita: “You have work. You should go.”
Raj: “I'm leaving now.”
Raj walked towards his motorcycle.
Ankita went inside.
The house suddenly felt unusually quiet.
---
That evening, Ankita was preparing dinner when the power suddenly went off.
She walked outside and looked towards the neighbouring houses.
Ankita: “Oh no…”
She checked the switchboard.
Nothing happened.
After a few minutes, she stepped outside and saw Raj returning from work.
Raj: “Anni, what happened?”
Ankita: “The power went off only in our house.”
Raj: “Did you check the main switch?”
Ankita: “Yes. I don't understand what happened.”
Raj: “I'll take a look.”
Ankita: “Are you sure?”
Raj: “Yes. Wait here.”
Raj checked the main switch and the meter.
After a few moments, he returned.
Raj: “Anni, one of the switches has tripped.”
Ankita: “Really?”
Raj: “Yes. Try switching it on now.”
The power came back.
Ankita smiled.
Ankita: “It worked.”
Raj: “That's all.”
Ankita: “Thank you, Raj.”
Raj: “Anna specifically told me to look after you.”
Ankita: “He trusts you a lot.”
Raj: “He's like an elder brother to me.”
Ankita nodded.
Ankita: “I know. You both have been close for a long time.”
Raj: “Yes. But we're not related.”
Ankita: “I know.”
Raj: “People sometimes think I'm his younger brother because I call him Anna.”
Ankita: “I've heard people say that too.”
Raj: “It's just respect and familiarity.”
Ankita: “Yes.”
Raj smiled.
Raj: “Okay, Anni. I'll go.”
Ankita: “Wait.”
Raj stopped.
Raj: “What happened?”
Ankita: “Have you eaten?”
Raj: “Not yet.”
Ankita: “Go eat first.”
Raj: “I will.”
Ankita: “Don't skip dinner.”
Raj: “Yes, Anni.”
He smiled and walked away.
That night, Vel called.
Vel: “Ankita, did you eat?”
Ankita: “Yes. Did you?”
Vel: “Yes.”
Ankita: “How was the journey?”
Vel: “Fine. I'm tired, but everything is okay.”
Ankita: “Good.”
Vel: “Did you have any problems at home?”
Ankita smiled.
Ankita: “Actually, there was a small power problem.”
Vel: “What happened?”
Ankita: “Raj came and fixed it.”
Vel sounded relieved.
Vel: “See? That's exactly why I told him to look after you.”
Ankita: “Yes.”
Vel: “If you need anything else, call him.”
Ankita: “Okay.”
Vel: “Don't stay awake too late.”
Ankita: “You too. Get some rest.”
Vel: “Good night, Ankita.”
Ankita: “Good night.”
The call ended.
Ankita placed the phone beside her.
She thought about the day's events.
Raj had helped her with something small.
Nothing unusual had happened.
Yet, somehow, she had begun noticing him more than before.
And neither Ankita nor Raj knew where their growing familiarity would eventually lead them.

Chapter 2 — A Little Too Close
Vel had been away for several days because of work.
At first, he called Devi every evening.
But as the days passed, his calls became shorter.
Sometimes he called only once.
Sometimes he said he was busy and promised to call later.
Sometimes, he didn't call at all.
Devi tried not to complain.
She understood that he had work.
But she couldn't stop herself from feeling lonely.
Raj, meanwhile, had started helping Devi with small things around the house.
One morning, Devi was trying to move a heavy box.
Raj noticed her from outside.
Raj: “Anni, wait. I'll do that.”
Devi: “It's okay, Raj. I can manage.”
Raj: “Why are you struggling with it when I'm right here?”
Devi: “It's not that heavy.”
Raj: “Give it to me.”
Raj took the box from her and carried it inside.
Devi watched him.
Devi: “Thank you.”
Raj: “You keep saying thank you for everything.”
Devi: “Because you're helping me a lot.”
Raj: “Anna told me to look after you.”
Devi smiled.
Devi: “You haven't forgotten what he told you, have you?”
Raj: “How could I forget?”
Devi: “You've been helping me almost every day.”
Raj: “Is that a problem?”
Devi: “No.”
She paused.
Devi: “Actually… I like having someone around.”
Raj looked at her.
Raj: “You feel lonely when Anna is away?”
Devi hesitated.
Devi: “Sometimes.”
Raj: “You can talk to me whenever you feel like talking.”
Devi: “You're becoming very confident.”
Raj: “Only because you don't get angry with me.”
Devi smiled.
Devi: “Maybe I should start getting angry.”
Raj: “Please don't.”
Devi: “Why?”
Raj: “Because I like seeing you smile.”
Devi looked at him for a moment.
She hadn't expected that answer.
Devi: “You talk too much.”
Raj: “Only when I'm with you.”
Devi turned away, hiding her smile.
That evening, Raj came to the house again.
He had been asked to help with a small repair.
While he was working, Devi stood nearby.
Devi: “Raj.”
Raj: “Hmm?”
Devi: “Why do you come here every day?”
Raj smiled.
Raj: “Because you always seem to have something for me to do.”
Devi: “That's not what I meant.”
Raj: “Then what did you mean?”
Devi didn't answer immediately.
Devi: “Nothing.”
Raj looked at her carefully.
To him, Devi looked exceptionally beautiful that evening.
Her simple clothes, her smile, and the way she spoke made it difficult for him to look away.
He tried to hide his feelings.
But his eyes betrayed him.
Devi: “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Raj: “Like what?”
Devi: “You know exactly what I mean.”
Raj laughed softly.
Raj: “I was just thinking.”
Devi: “About?”
Raj: “You're very beautiful.”
Devi became silent.
Devi: “Raj…”
Raj: “What?”
Devi: “Don't say things like that.”
Raj: “Why?”
Devi: “Because I'm your Anni.”
Raj nodded.
Raj: “I know.”
There was a short silence.
Raj: “But being respectful doesn't mean I can't appreciate how beautiful you are.”
Devi looked away.
She should have told him to stop.
Instead, she smiled.
That small smile gave Raj courage.
From that day onwards, Raj started coming to their house more often.
He helped with little things.
A leaking tap.
A stuck window.
Moving furniture.
Bringing groceries when Devi couldn't go out.
And then something else happened.
Raj started coming to the house for tuition.
He had decided to improve his studies and asked Devi whether she could help him.
Raj: “Anni, can you teach me?”
Devi: “Teach you what?”
Raj: “The subjects I'm struggling with.”
Devi: “You want tuition from me?”
Raj: “Yes.”
Devi: “Why me?”
Raj: “Because you're patient.”
Devi: “Are you sure it's because I'm patient?”
Raj: “Maybe because I like listening to you.”
Devi shook her head.
Devi: “You're impossible.”
Raj: “So… will you teach me?”
Devi: “Fine. Come tomorrow evening.”
Raj: “Really?”
Devi: “Yes.”
Raj: “Thank you, Anni.”
The next evening, Raj arrived exactly on time.
He sat down with his books.
Devi brought him a notebook.
Devi: “Open the first chapter.”
Raj: “Yes, teacher.”
Devi: “Don't call me teacher.”
Raj: “Then what should I call you?”
Devi: “Just Devi.”
Raj smiled.
Raj: “That sounds different.”
Devi: “Different how?”
Raj: “I usually call you Anni.”
Devi: “Because that's what you should call me.”
Raj: “Okay, Anni.”
They began studying.
But Raj spent more time looking at Devi than at his book.
Devi: “Raj, are you listening?”
Raj: “Yes.”
Devi: “Then tell me what I just explained.”
Raj paused.
Raj: “I was distracted.”
Devi: “I noticed.”
Raj: “It's difficult to concentrate.”
Devi: “Why?”
Raj smiled.
Raj: “Because my teacher is too beautiful.”
Devi tried to look serious.
Devi: “If you keep talking like this, tuition is cancelled.”
Raj: “Okay, okay. I'll study.”
Devi: “Good.”
A few minutes later, Raj looked at her again.
Devi: “Raj!”
Raj: “Sorry.”
Devi: “You promised to study.”
Raj: “I'm trying.”
Devi: “Try harder.”
Raj: “Yes, Devi.”
She smiled.
The tuition continued the next day.
And the day after that.
Soon, Raj came every evening.
The lessons became longer.
The conversations became more personal.
Raj: “How was your day?”
Devi: “Normal.”
Raj: “Did you eat properly?”
Devi: “Yes.”
Raj: “Did Anna call?”
Devi's smile disappeared slightly.
Devi: “No.”
Raj: “Again?”
Devi: “He said he was busy.”
Raj: “You seem disappointed.”
Devi: “I'm his wife. Of course I expect him to talk to me.”
Raj became quiet.
Raj: “If you want to talk, I'm here.”
Devi looked at him.
Devi: “You always say that.”
Raj: “Because I mean it.”
Devi: “Why do you care so much?”
Raj smiled gently.
Raj: “Maybe because I like caring about you.”
Devi didn't reply.
She looked down at her book.
But she couldn't concentrate anymore.
She had begun to notice something she didn't want to admit.
She liked Raj's attention.
She liked the way he asked whether she had eaten.
She liked the way he noticed when she was upset.
She liked the way he tried to make her smile.
Most of all, she liked feeling that someone was thinking about her.
One night, after tuition, Raj stood up to leave.
Raj: “I'll go now.”
Devi: “Okay.”
Raj walked towards the door.
Then he turned around.
Raj: “Devi.”
She looked at him.
Devi: “What?”
Raj: “Don't look so sad.”
Devi: “I'm not sad.”
Raj: “You are.”
Devi: “How do you know?”
Raj: “Because I've been seeing you every day.”
Devi remained silent.
Raj: “Good night.”
Devi: “Good night, Raj.”
Raj left.
Devi closed the door and stood there for a moment.
She slowly picked up her phone.
She called Vel.
The phone rang.
And rang.
No answer.
She called again.
Still no answer.
Devi put the phone down.
She stared at the screen.
Devi: “Why has everything changed?”
There was a time when Vel would call her just to ask how her day had been.
Now, even when she called him, he often didn't answer.
She sat quietly on the sofa.
Her thoughts became restless.
She didn't simply miss her husband anymore.
She missed having someone who would listen to her.
Someone who would notice her silence.
Someone who would ask, “Are you okay?”
And, without realizing it, Devi had started finding those things in Raj.
She knew it was dangerous.
She knew Raj was her neighbour.
She knew Vel trusted him.
But her heart was beginning to ask a different question.
“What if Raj is becoming more important to me than he should be?”
Devi immediately pushed the thought away.
But she couldn't deny one thing anymore.
She was getting closer to Raj.
And Raj was getting closer to her.
Neither of them knew where that closeness would eventually take them.

It is something surprisingly vele said that it is only 3 or 4 days work how he has disappeared? and in those days not talking to Devika is another loose end, the only thing appears that he must be in an affair with another lady and he disappeared leaving Devi to Raj, of course everything is possible in when it comes to sex

Chapter 3 — One Evening at a Time
Day 1 — No More Tuition
The next evening, Raj arrived at Devi's house with his books.
He stood near the doorway and smiled.
Raj: “Anni, shall we start today's tuition?”
Devi looked at the books in his hand and smiled.
Devi: “No, Raj. Put them away. I don't think we should continue this.”
Raj's smile disappeared.
Raj: “Did I do something wrong? If I wasn't studying properly, I'll concentrate from now on. I know I've been distracting you with all my talking, but I can change that.”
Devi: “That's not the reason. Actually, that's exactly the problem. Whenever you come here, we spend more time talking than studying. At first, I thought it was harmless. Then I started waiting for you to come. I started wondering why you hadn't arrived if you were late. I started feeling disappointed when you left. That's when I realized that this isn't really tuition anymore.”
Raj slowly put the books on the table.
Raj: “Then what is it?”
Devi sat down.
Devi: “I don't know what to call it. That's why I'm afraid of it. But I know one thing. I don't want you to come here pretending to be my student. I want you to come because you want to spend time with me.”
Raj sat opposite her.
Raj: “I've wanted to say the same thing for a long time. I stopped coming here because Anna asked me to help you. I started coming because I wanted to see you. I would finish my work and think about coming here. Sometimes I would even make up a reason to visit because I didn't know how else to tell you that I simply wanted to be around you.”
Devi looked at him quietly.
Devi: “And I started waiting for you.”
Raj smiled.
Raj: “Then tomorrow, I'll come without the books.”
Devi: “Good.”
Raj: “Where are we going?”
Devi smiled.
Devi: “You said you like the beach.”
Raj: “I do.”
Devi: “Then take me there.”
---
Day 2 — The Beach
The next evening, Raj and Devi walked along the beach.
The waves were coming in gently.
They walked without speaking for some time.
Finally, Devi spoke.
Devi: “Raj, I feel strange today. I haven't done anything wrong, but I feel like I'm doing something I shouldn't. Maybe it's because I've never spent time like this with anyone after my marriage.”
Raj: “If you feel uncomfortable, we can go home. I don't want you to do anything simply because I want it.”
Devi: “That's why I feel comfortable with you. You always give me the choice. You don't force me to answer questions. You don't force me to stay. You don't even force me to talk. Somehow that makes me want to stay.”
Raj: “Then stay.”
Devi smiled.
Devi: “You make everything sound simple.”
Raj: “Because sometimes it is simple. You're lonely. I'm here. We talk. We laugh. We spend time together. We don't have to decide what tomorrow will look like.”
Devi: “But I keep thinking about Vel.”
Raj became quiet.
Raj: “You don't have to talk about him if it hurts.”
Devi: “I'm not talking because I miss him. I'm talking because I feel guilty that I don't miss him as much anymore.”
Raj looked at her.
Devi: “Earlier, if Vel didn't call, I couldn't sleep properly. I would keep checking my phone. Now I'm standing here with you, and I haven't even looked at my phone once. That's what scares me.”
Raj: “Maybe your heart is tired of waiting.”
Devi looked at the sea.
Devi: “Maybe.”
---
Day 3 — The Park
The following evening, they went to the park.
They sat on a bench beneath a tree.
Raj took a cigarette from his pocket.
Devi noticed it.
Devi: “You smoke?”
Raj: “Sometimes.”
Devi: “I noticed you doing it before, but I never asked.”
Raj hesitated.
Raj: “I don't want you to start because of me.”
Devi: “I didn't say I wanted to.”
Raj lit his cigarette.
Devi watched him quietly.
Devi: “Why do you smoke when you're thinking?”
Raj: “It's just a habit. Don't make it sound romantic.”
Devi laughed.
Devi: “I'm not. I'm just curious.”
Raj looked at her.
Raj: “You really are curious about everything.”
Devi: “Maybe because I didn't have anyone to talk to for a long time.”
Raj became serious.
Raj: “Then talk to me. You don't need a cigarette or anything else to talk to me.”
Devi smiled.
Devi: “I know.”
She paused.
Devi: “But I want to understand the things you do. Not because I want to copy you. Because I want to know you better.”
Raj nodded.
Raj: “Then ask me anything.”
---
Day 4 — At Home
That evening, Raj came to Devi's house.
They sat in the hall for a long time.
Devi: “Raj, do you ever think about what people would say if they knew how much time we spend together?”
Raj: “Of course I do. But I don't want our entire life to be decided by other people's opinions.”
Devi: “I agree. But I also don't want to hurt anyone.”
Raj: “Neither do I. That's why I'm not asking you to do anything you're not ready for. I just want to be honest about how I feel. I like being with you. I like talking to you. I like seeing you smile. When you are upset, I want to know why. When you are happy, I want to know what made you happy.”
Devi looked at him.
Devi: “Do you know what I like most?”
Raj: “What?”
Devi: “You notice when I'm quiet.”
Raj smiled.
Raj: “Because I've started paying attention to you.”
Devi: “And I've started paying attention to you too.”
There was a long silence.
Raj: “Devi, I think we're getting closer.”
Devi: “I know.”
Raj: “Are you afraid?”
Devi: “A little.”
Raj: “And yet you're still sitting here.”
Devi smiled.
Devi: “Yes. I'm still here.”
---
Day 5 — Another Evening at the Park
Raj and Devi met again.
Raj sat beside her and looked at the cigarette in his hand.
Devi noticed.
Devi: “You can smoke if you want.”
Raj: “Are you sure?”
Devi: “Yes.”
She watched him for a moment.
Devi: “Can I try one?”
Raj immediately looked at her.
Raj: “Are you serious?”
Devi: “I'm curious. That's all.”
Raj: “Devi, don't do it just because you think it will make you closer to me.”
Devi: “I'm not doing it for you. I simply want to know what it's like.”
Raj hesitated before giving her one.
Devi tried it briefly and immediately coughed.
Raj laughed.
Devi: “Don't laugh!”
Raj: “I'm sorry. I couldn't help it. You looked completely shocked.”
Devi: “It tastes horrible.”
Raj: “Then don't do it again.”
Devi: “Maybe I won't.”
Raj smiled.
Raj: “Good.”
Devi looked at him.
Devi: “You were actually worried.”
Raj: “Of course I was. I don't want you changing yourself just to fit into my world.”
Devi: “Maybe I don't want to fit into your world.”
Raj looked at her.
Devi: “Maybe I want us to create our own little world.”
Raj smiled.
---
Day 6 — The Theatre
They went to the theatre that evening.
After the movie, they sat outside and talked.
Devi: “I enjoyed today.”
Raj: “The movie?”
Devi: “The whole evening. I liked sitting beside you. I liked laughing with you. I liked having someone to share an ordinary evening with.”
Raj: “Then we'll do it again.”
Devi: “You say that as if we have unlimited time.”
Raj: “We don't know how much time we have. That's exactly why I don't want to waste every evening worrying about tomorrow.”
Devi looked at him.
Devi: “I think I'm beginning to understand you.”
Raj: “And I'm beginning to understand you.”
Devi: “That's dangerous.”
Raj: “Why?”
Devi: “Because when two people understand each other too well, they can become difficult to separate.”
Raj smiled.
Raj: “Maybe that's already happening.”
Devi didn't disagree.
---
Day 7 — A Drink
That evening, they were sitting at Devi's house.
Raj had brought a drink.
Devi noticed.
Devi: “You've been drinking?”
Raj: “Occasionally.”
Devi: “I've never really had it.”
Raj: “Then you don't have to.”
Devi: “I know. But I'm curious again.”
Raj looked at her carefully.
Raj: “Only if you're comfortable. And don't think drinking will solve anything you're feeling.”
Devi: “I don't think it will. I just want to try something once.”
She took a small sip.
She made a face.
Raj laughed.
Devi: “Again?”
Raj: “Sorry. I can't help it.”
Devi: “You laughed when I tried smoking too.”
Raj: “Because your expressions are funny.”
Devi smiled.
Devi: “Maybe I'll learn slowly.”
Raj: “You don't have to learn anything for me.”
Devi: “I know. But I want to experience things with you.”
Raj became quiet.
Raj: “That's what makes this different.”

Day 8 — The Beach Again
They returned to the beach.
Devi walked beside Raj comfortably.
She wasn't checking her phone.
Raj noticed.
Raj: “You haven't checked your phone once.”
Devi smiled.
Devi: “I know.”
Raj: “No message from Vel?”
Devi: “I don't know.”
Raj: “You don't want to know?”
Devi stopped walking.
Devi: “That's the truth. I used to want his attention so badly. Now I don't even want to check whether he's given it to me. I don't know whether that's wrong or right. I only know that something inside me has changed.”
Raj didn't say anything.
Devi continued.
Devi: “When I come out with you, I don't feel like someone's wife waiting for her husband. I feel like Devi. Just Devi. A woman who can laugh, talk, walk by the sea, watch a movie, sit in a park and enjoy an evening. I had forgotten that person existed.”
Raj: “Then don't let her disappear again.”
Devi smiled.
Devi: “I won't.”
Raj looked at her.
Raj: “And what am I to you now?”
Devi thought for a moment.
Devi: “You're the person I look forward to seeing.”
Raj smiled.
Raj: “That's enough for me.”
They continued walking.
The evening became darker.
The waves continued to move toward the shore.
And Devi realized that she wasn't thinking about Vel anymore.
She was thinking about tomorrow.
And she knew exactly who she wanted tomorrow to be with.
Raj.

Chapter 4 — The New Rules of the House
Day 9 — An Unexpected Scene
It was evening when Vel returned home.
He opened the door, expecting to find Devi alone, as usual. But the moment he entered the hall, he stopped in shock.
Devi was sitting comfortably on the sofa, with Raj sitting on her lap. She had one arm around his shoulder, and the two of them were laughing at something Raj had just said.
For several seconds, Vel simply stared at them.
Then his face hardened.
Vel: “Devi! What is going on here? Have you completely forgotten that you are my wife? I leave this house in the morning and come back in the evening, expecting at least a little peace, but instead I find another man sitting on your lap! And you are laughing as though there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Raj, get up immediately. I want an explanation from both of you!”
Devi did not immediately move away from Raj. She looked at Vel calmly, almost as if she had expected this confrontation sooner or later.
Devi: “Why are you shouting, Vel? You have just walked through the door, and already you are trying to control everyone in this house. Instead of asking me how I feel or why Raj is here, you immediately start giving orders. Have you ever wondered why I have become so distant from you? Have you ever thought about how lonely I have been? You are angry because you see me spending time with another man, but you never seemed concerned when I was sitting alone, waiting for you to notice me.”
Vel clenched his fists.
Vel: “Do not try to turn this around on me! I am your husband. I have every right to ask what is happening in my own marriage. Raj, I trusted you. You came here pretending to be a good friend, and now you are sitting on my wife's lap in front of me. Have you no shame?”
Raj slowly stood up, but he did not step away from Devi.
Raj: “Vel, you keep repeating that you are her husband as though those words give you ownership over her. Devi is a person, not a possession. You cannot ignore her feelings for years and suddenly expect her to behave exactly as you want when you discover that somebody else makes her happy. I did not force her to spend time with me. She chose to invite me into her life. If you have a problem with that, speak to her respectfully instead of shouting at both of us.”
Vel turned toward Devi again.
Vel: “So this is what you want now? You want Raj in your life, and you do not care what happens to our marriage? Tell me honestly, Devi. Is this man more important to you than I am?”
Devi finally stood up. She adjusted her clothes and looked directly into her husband's eyes.
Devi: “You want an honest answer? Yes, Raj has become very important to me. When I was lonely, he listened. When I wanted to talk, he gave me his time. When I laughed, he laughed with me. I began looking forward to seeing him because he made me feel like a person again, rather than someone who was simply waiting for her husband to come home. You may not like hearing that, Vel, but I will not lie to you just to protect your pride.”
Raj moved closer to Devi.
Raj: “And let me make one thing clear, Vel. I care about Devi, and I want to be part of her life. I am not going to pretend otherwise just because you are angry. She is the woman I want to be with, and I want a future with her. But I will not force her to choose anything. Her decision must be her own.”
Devi took Raj's hand.
Devi: “You heard him, Vel. Raj is important to me, and I am no longer going to hide my feelings simply because you might disapprove. If you want to remain in this house, you will have to learn to speak to me with respect. Things cannot continue the way they did before.”
Vel looked from Raj to Devi, struggling to understand how quickly his familiar world had changed.
Day 9 — The Question of Divorce
Vel sat down heavily on the sofa.
Vel: “If this is how you feel, then perhaps we should get a divorce. I cannot live in a marriage where my wife openly chooses another man and expects me to accept it. I would rather end this relationship than spend the rest of my life being humiliated in my own home.”
Devi's expression changed. She walked toward him and stood in front of the sofa.
Devi: “Divorce? You think you can simply announce that you want a divorce and walk away from everything? Listen carefully, Vel. I am not going to let you use divorce as a threat whenever you dislike my decisions. If you want to discuss the future of our marriage, we can discuss it properly. But you cannot frighten me into returning to the person I used to be.”
Vel: “Then what exactly do you expect from me? You want Raj to remain here, you want me to accept your relationship with him, and you want me to behave as though nothing has happened. How can you expect me to live like that? I have feelings too, Devi. I may have made mistakes, but that does not mean I have stopped being human.”
Devi looked at him for a long moment.
Devi: “I am not asking you to pretend that you have no feelings. You are free to express your feelings, just as I am free to express mine. But from now on, I will make decisions about my own life. You will not shout at me, dictate whom I can speak to, or expect me to give up my happiness simply because you are uncomfortable. If you choose to remain in this house, we will have to establish new boundaries and responsibilities.”
Raj stood beside her.
Raj: “Vel, nobody can make this decision for you, and nobody should make it for Devi either. If you want to discuss divorce, seek proper legal advice and understand your options. Do not make threats in the heat of the moment. Whatever happens, it should be handled honestly.”
Devi continued, her voice firm.
Devi: “And one more thing, Vel. Do not threaten me with divorce to frighten me, and do not expect me to make false accusations against you. I will not use a dowry case as a weapon, and I will not accept threats from you either. If there are genuine legal issues, they must be dealt with truthfully and through the proper legal process. I will not build my future on fear.”
Vel lowered his head.
For the first time that evening, he had nothing to say.
Day 10 — A Different Morning
The next morning, Vel woke up earlier than usual.
He went into the kitchen and began preparing coffee. He remembered how Devi liked it and carefully added the amount of sugar she usually preferred.
When he brought the cup into the hall, Devi was sitting on the sofa, checking her phone.
Vel: “Devi, I have made your coffee. I also thought I would prepare breakfast this morning. You can relax for a while. I know things have become difficult between us, and I am not expecting one cup of coffee to change anything. I just want to start taking responsibility for the things I have neglected.”
Devi accepted the cup.
Devi: “Thank you, Vel. But understand something. You do not have to become my servant to prove that you care about me. If you want to cook, cook. If you want to help around the house, help. We can divide the household responsibilities fairly. But do not do these things while secretly expecting me to reward you with affection or promise that I will return to the marriage exactly as it was.”
Vel nodded slowly.
Vel: “I understand what you are saying. I used to assume that because we were married, everything between us would somehow take care of itself. I did not pay enough attention to what you were feeling. I cannot change the past, but I can try to become more considerate. I know you may not feel the same way about me anymore, but I would still like the chance to understand what went wrong.”
Devi took a sip of coffee.
Devi: “Then start by listening. Do not assume that you know what I want. Ask me. Do not treat my silence as permission, and do not treat my disagreement as disrespect. If we are going to live under the same roof, we need honesty and clear boundaries. I will not promise you a future that I am uncertain about.”
Vel returned to the kitchen and continued preparing breakfast.
For the first time, he began to understand that he could not simply demand his wife's attention. If he wanted to rebuild trust, he would have to work for it.
Day 10 — The Husband in the Kitchen
That evening, Raj arrived at the house again.
Vel opened the door. He looked uncomfortable, but he stepped aside and allowed Raj to enter.
Vel: “Come in, Raj. Devi is in the hall. I do not want another argument today. I still find this situation painful, and I cannot pretend that I am happy about it. But I want to understand what is happening instead of shouting every time I see you here.”
Raj entered and sat down near Devi.
Raj: “I appreciate that, Vel. I know this is difficult for you. I care about Devi, and I want to spend time with her. But I will not decide her future for her. She must be free to make her own choices, and you must be free to decide what you can or cannot accept in this marriage.”
Devi looked at both men.
Devi: “That is exactly what I want. I am tired of living according to expectations that nobody discusses openly. Vel, you cannot demand that I return to the way things were simply because you are my husband. Raj, you cannot expect me to make every decision in your favour simply because you care about me. I will decide what I want, and I will be honest with both of you.”
Vel remained silent for a moment.
Vel: “Then I will try to respect that. I still love you, Devi, and I still hope we can repair our marriage. But I understand that I cannot force you to feel something you no longer feel. I will continue doing my share of the household work, and I will try to listen instead of arguing. I only ask that you be honest with me about what you want for the future.”
Devi looked at him thoughtfully.
Devi: “I will be honest. But you must also be prepared for an answer you may not like. For now, we will live with mutual respect. You can prepare dinner tonight if you wish. I appreciate the effort you are making, but remember that doing household work does not make you inferior. It makes you responsible for your share of our life together.”
Vel went back into the kitchen.
He chopped the vegetables, prepared the curry, and began cooking dinner. From the hall, he could hear Devi and Raj talking and laughing.
A wave of jealousy passed through him, but he tried not to let it turn into anger.
He had begun to accept a new reality: Devi would no longer allow him to dictate every part of her life.
Day 11 — Devi's Decision
The following evening, Devi sat with Raj in the hall while Vel finished preparing dinner.
Raj looked at her thoughtfully.
Raj: “Devi, I want to ask you something. Are you truly happy with the way things are developing? I do not want you to feel that you must prove your independence by making decisions you might later regret. I care about you, and I want whatever happens between us to be something you genuinely want.”
Devi smiled gently.
Devi: “I am beginning to understand myself better. For years, I thought being a wife meant putting my own feelings aside. Now I know that my feelings matter too. I want to spend time with you because I enjoy your company, not because I want to punish Vel. I need time to understand what I really want, and I do not want either of you making that decision for me.”
Raj nodded.
Raj: “Then take that time. I am not going to rush you. I want to be with you, but I want you to choose me freely.”
Vel entered the hall carrying a tray of food.
Vel: “Dinner is ready. I have prepared everything. Devi, I made the dish you like, and I have kept the spice level mild. Raj, you are welcome to join us if you wish.”
Devi looked at the tray and then at Vel.
Devi: “Thank you, Vel. Put it on the table. We can all sit down and eat. Things are not simple between us, but at least we can begin by treating one another with respect.”
Vel placed the tray on the table.
He had once believed that being a husband meant having the final word in his home. Now he was learning that a marriage could not survive on authority alone.
Devi had become more confident, more independent, and less willing to sacrifice her happiness for appearances. Raj had become an important part of her life, while Vel struggled to understand whether their marriage could still be repaired.
That evening, as the three of them sat down to dinner, one thing was certain.
The old rules of their household had disappeared.
A new chapter had begun.
