Chapter 46 — The Night After Rain
Chennai returned to routine quickly. Too quickly. Morning traffic. Office rush. college schedules. Deadlines. As if emotional chaos could simply disappear inside ordinary life. --- Shruthi resumed office the very next Monday. Formal clothes. Tied hair. Calm expression. From outside, nothing about her looked different. But internally, something had shifted ever since Coimbatore. Not because something irreversible happened. Because something almost did. And sometimes “almost” becomes more haunting than reality. --- Karthik noticed it immediately. She avoided being alone with him now. Not rudely. Carefully. Professional conversations only. No lingering smiles. No unnecessary cafeteria breaks. But the emotional tension between them had become heavier precisely because both remembered that terrace night too clearly. --- That evening office work stretched unusually late due to a client escalation. Most employees slowly left floor by floor. By nine-thirty, only a handful remained. Rain started outside again. Chennai roads flooded within minutes. --- “Cab prices became insane,” one employee complained loudly before leaving. Shruthi checked her phone. No cabs nearby. Perfect. --- Meanwhile Karthik returned from another floor carrying files when he noticed her still waiting near reception. “You didn’t leave?” “No cab.” “Same.” The awkwardness between them returned immediately. --- For a few minutes both remained near the glass entrance silently watching rain crash against the road outside. Then the office power flickered once briefly. Backup lights turned on dimly. The atmosphere suddenly felt too quiet. Too intimate. --- “Generator issue,” security staff informed casually while walking past. “Some floors power reduced temporarily.” Great. --- Shruthi exhaled tiredly and sat near the lobby couch. Her head hurt badly today. Karthik hesitated. Then silently placed a tea cup near her after using the vending machine. She looked at it for several seconds before taking it quietly. “Thanks.” --- The rain showed no sign of stopping. Time passed slowly. One employee left. Then another. Soon the entire reception floor became nearly empty except for them and one distant security guard. --- Back at the apartment, Lokesh had already brought Hasini home. Laila was there too. Not inside their apartment this time. Just outside near the corridor helping Hasini complete a college project because Shah Rukh was again delayed at work. --- “Glue everywhere,” Laila sighed dramatically. Hasini giggled. Lokesh watched them from the dining table while pretending to work on his laptop. The domestic warmth between them had become frighteningly natural now. Not forced. Not flirtatious. That was exactly the danger. --- Meanwhile at office, Shruthi finally stood near the entrance again checking her phone repeatedly. Still no cab. Then suddenly thunder shook the building loudly. Instinctively, she flinched slightly. Karthik noticed. “You’re scared of thunder?” “No.” “Biggest lie.” Despite herself, she smiled faintly. A small smile. Still enough to soften the distance again. --- Another silence followed. But this silence felt different tonight. Heavier. Aware. --- “You’ve been avoiding me,” Karthik finally said quietly. Shruthi stared outside at the rain. “We should.” “That easy ah?” “No.” The honesty escaped before she could stop it. --- Karthik stepped closer slowly. Not enough to corner her. Enough to make emotional awareness impossible to ignore. --- “That night in Coimbatore…” he began softly. “Don’t.” “Why?” “Because if we speak honestly, things become worse.” Her voice came out weaker than intended. --- At the apartment, power suddenly went off completely for a few seconds. Hasini squealed dramatically while laughing. Laila instinctively moved closer near Lokesh during the darkness before emergency lights flickered back on. A tiny movement. Still noticed by both. --- For one second, neither stepped away immediately afterward. Then Hasini interrupted loudly: “Current came!” The moment broke instantly. But something uncomfortable remained hanging silently between them. --- Back at office, the rain finally reduced slightly around ten-thirty. But now roads outside were nearly flooded. Security suggested waiting another half hour before booking cabs. Shruthi closed her eyes tiredly. “I’m exhausted.” Karthik looked at her carefully then. Not lustfully. Emotionally. That made it worse. --- “Come upstairs,” he said softly. “There’s a resting room near training hall. At least sit comfortably till rain reduces.” She hesitated immediately. Because both understood how dangerous even that sounded now. --- But exhaustion slowly defeats judgment. And loneliness weakens resistance further. --- Finally she nodded quietly. --- The training floor remained almost dark except for one side lamp and faint city lights entering through glass walls. Rainwater moved slowly down the windows. The room felt cold because of central AC. Shruthi sat near the couch rubbing her arms tiredly. Karthik silently handed her his overshirt again. Exactly like Coimbatore. That memory returned instantly between them. --- “You keep doing this,” she whispered faintly. “Because you keep shivering.” Their fingers brushed briefly during the exchange. Neither moved immediately afterward. --- Outside, thunder rolled again softly across Chennai. Inside, silence thickened. --- At the apartment, after Hasini finally slept on the sofa itself during the project work, Laila quietly lifted her carefully. Lokesh instinctively helped. Their hands touched together while adjusting the sleeping child. Both paused briefly. --- Laila looked up first. Too close. Far too close. --- And somewhere between rain, dim emergency lights, shared loneliness, and emotional dependence— the night blurred dangerously for both homes. ---

Announcement
The chapter ends here, with two closed doors in two different parts of Chennai. One in an office room. One in an apartment corridor. And at this point, nothing is confirmed. Nothing is denied either. As readers, you are left exactly where the characters are—standing in that uneasy space where intention has formed, but action remains uncertain. A space where even the characters themselves may not fully understand whether something truly happened, or whether it only felt like it was about to. By morning, everything may look normal again. Conversations may continue. Life will move forward as if nothing changed. But the question will remain—did a line get crossed, or did everyone simply stop right at the edge of it? That answer is not given yet. Based on the feedback i get from on , the story will continue with more structured development in the upcoming chapters. The progression will remain gradual, with key moments unfolding step by step. And the moment where everything becomes fully clear—the real turning point, the breaking point, the reveal of what is truly happening—has been set aside for Chapter 50. Until then, each chapter will continue building that tension, until it can no longer remain unspoken. Like, comment, review, Criticise.. ---

What difference does it make whether actions remain uncertain or not?
Lokesh - He knows his wife is emotionally drifting away, knows Laila's presence is unsettling her, Knows that he has not yet revealed his conversations with Divya and also did not reveal if this is all plan of Karthik and possibly Divya...his suspicions were kept to himself. Above all he doesn't seem to be bothered like Shruthi at all that she is drfiting away..Maybe because we only read from Shruthi's pov we feel that she notices her place physically and emotionally is being displaced. What about Lokesh? I feel like atleast he has not taken a single step to get emotional connection back with Shruthi. He did not speak openly, he did not comfort her, he did not even hug her since the story began...he never shared her emotional burden since that night in Divya's house...Is he really husband? Its like he wanted Shruthi to drift away slowly and already looking for an alternative lol Shruthi - She equally shares the burden of ruining her marriage...She thinks her loneliness warrants her freedom to get close to Karthik, she did not take single step to seek her husband's help nor she cared about her marriage enough to not play with fire which is Karthik. Knowing he is attracted to her she seeks solace in his presence. 10 years of marriage and comfort lost before few months of comfort and friendship, if it was lust then it is understood but its not lust..its comfort, understanding and peace from a new relationship, these are the qualities that not only make them end up in someone else's bed but in someone's heart as well. Shruthi doesn't care to change things knowing her husband is seeking emotional dependence elsewhere... These two are the most aligned couple I have ever seen here who want to drift away from each other willingly lol So whether they crossed the line or did not cross the line that night behind closed doors really do not matter...they have already crossed lines in their minds and they do not care...this story though unique is failing big time to invoke emotions for me as the bond between the couple is missing since the beginning. ~RCF

Chapter 47 — Closer
Laila closed the apartment door softly behind him. Neither of them spoke immediately. The silence wasn’t empty anymore. It felt shared. Alive. --- Lokesh stood near the hall while Laila walked slowly toward the kitchen, trying to act normal—though both of them knew that “normal” had quietly stopped existing between them some time ago. “You want milk?” she asked softly. A pause. “You always offer something warm when you’re thinking too much.” A faint smile touched her lips, though she didn’t turn around. “And you always notice too much,” she replied. --- The warm yellow lights made the kitchen look smaller than it was. Safer than it should have been. Laila reached for a glass bottle of milk, her bangles making a soft, familiar sound that somehow felt louder in the silence. Lokesh watched her—not casually, not absentmindedly. Like someone trying to stay still in a moment that kept pulling him forward. --- Laila felt it. That awareness again. Not loud. Not sudden. Just steady—like a presence behind her thoughts. She turned halfway. “What?” “Nothing.” “Liar,” she said softly. But this time, there was no distance in the word. --- He walked closer, unhurried. Stopping just beside the counter. Close enough that even silence felt shared now. The space between them had become something neither of them trusted anymore. --- “You should stop looking at me like that,” she whispered. “How am I looking?” Laila hesitated—just for a second too long. “Like you’re already halfway inside a thought you shouldn’t have.” The honesty made the air shift. --- Lokesh leaned slightly against the counter, still not touching. “And you?” he asked quietly. The question lingered. Because she didn’t answer immediately. --- The milk sat forgotten for a moment. The world outside that counter felt far away now. --- “You know what the problem is?” she said finally. “What?” “I wait for evenings now.” The words weren’t dramatic. That made them heavier. --- Something changed in his expression. Not sudden. Just inevitable. His hand slowly came to rest near her—close, hesitant, careful. Not claiming. Just there. Waiting. --- Laila’s breath caught softly. But she didn’t move away. Instead, her fingers lightly gripped the edge of the counter, as if grounding herself in something real. --- For a long moment, neither spoke. The distance between them felt smaller than breath. Not because it vanished. But because it stopped meaning anything. --- Laila finally lifted her hand—slowly—resting it lightly against his chest. Not stopping him. Not pulling him closer. Just acknowledging the closeness she could no longer ignore. --- Lokesh exhaled quietly at the contact. Her eyes lowered for a second. Then closed—just briefly—like she was feeling the moment instead of resisting it. --- “Laila…” he said softly. Her name didn’t sound like a word anymore. It sounded like something between a question and a confession. --- When she looked up again, their faces were too close. Not rushed. Not forced. Just inevitable in the way some distances disappear without permission. --- His fingers lifted gently—not pulling, not demanding—just brushing a loose strand of hair back from her face. Careful. Almost reverent. --- The milk bottle behind them tilted slightly. Neither noticed when it settled. Or when the world outside the kitchen stopped mattering entirely. --- Laila’s voice came quieter than before. “You’re making this hard.” Lokesh’s answer was just as soft. “It stopped being easy the moment you stopped being just someone I know.” --- And for a long moment after that, neither of them moved away. Not because they couldn’t. But because neither of them wanted to be the first to break what had finally, quietly, become undeniable. ---

Chapter 48— Closed Doors
The conference room was dim now. Most of the office had already left. Music from the party had faded into a distant memory, replaced by the hum of the air conditioner and the soft echo of footsteps that were no longer there. Only Shruthi and Karthik remained. And the silence between them wasn’t empty anymore. --- The door clicked shut behind her. Not loudly. But decisively enough that it changed the room. --- Shruthi leaned slightly against the table, trying to steady herself more than she admitted. The drinks had blurred the edges of everything—thoughts, decisions, even restraint. Karthik stood near the projector screen, watching her. Not moving closer. Not moving away. --- “You should’ve gone home,” she said softly. “So should you,” he replied. A faint pause. “But neither of us did.” --- That made her look up. --- The fluorescent light above flickered once, then stabilized. Somewhere outside, a cleaning staff cart rolled past. Inside, the room felt sealed off from everything else. --- Karthik took a slow step forward. Then stopped again. As if testing whether the space between them still had rules. --- Shruthi didn’t tell him to stop. That was the problem. She should have. She didn’t. --- “You’re different when you’re not pretending,” he said quietly. “I’m always pretending,” she replied. “No,” he said. “Not now.” --- The honesty landed too close. She looked away, then back again—like she couldn’t decide where to keep her gaze safe. --- “Why are you here with me?” she asked. The question wasn’t firm anymore. It was searching. --- Karthik didn’t answer immediately. He just looked at her. Like he was finally allowing himself to. --- “Because when you’re around,” he said slowly, “everything else becomes background noise.” --- Shruthi let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. Her fingers loosened on the edge of the table. --- “Don’t say things like that,” she whispered. “Why?” “Because I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with them.” --- That was the moment he moved closer. Not fast. Not sudden. Just inevitable. --- Now there was no table between them. Only space. And even that felt temporary. --- Shruthi’s voice softened. “You’re crossing lines you shouldn’t.” --- Karthik’s eyes didn’t leave hers. “I think we crossed them a while ago. We’re just noticing now.” --- Her breath wavered slightly. The room felt warmer. Or maybe it was just him being too close. --- Neither of them spoke for a few seconds. That silence wasn’t calm. It was loaded with everything they were avoiding saying out loud. --- Shruthi’s hand lifted slightly, as if to create distance. But it stopped halfway. --- Karthik noticed. And didn’t take advantage of it. He just waited. --- That patience did more damage than urgency ever could. --- Her voice came quieter now. “If we stop pretending… this changes everything.” --- Karthik nodded once. “I know.” --- A pause. Longer this time. --- Shruthi looked at him properly now. Not as a colleague. Not as a passing presence in her life. Something else. Something she hadn’t named yet. --- The space between them disappeared slowly. Not forced. Not decided. Just surrendered to. --- Her forehead rested briefly against his. A moment of stillness that felt heavier than movement. --- Neither of them spoke after that. Because there was nothing left that words could hold safely. --- And when the door of the conference room stayed closed a little longer than it should have, the rest of the world outside simply assumed they had already left. ---

All of those stories has Husband playing dumb, busy or even out of station where wife commits infidelity without understanding consequences. Here, this story has couple understanding between them, they merely speak one words and yet they know the meaning. Lokesh just looks at Shruthi and can tell her every feeling. One word seems enough to carry meaning and frustrations. Yet they do not act upon it, neither of them would even remotely discuss how to make it better, its like there is this constant acknowledgement that their life has come to a standstill while life is moving on elsewhere but not between them but they do not take a step to fix it, rather both of them are thinking to seek solace outside marriage which doesn't make sense. Its not naivety nor its stupidity. Its recklessness and acting as though both want to get out of this marriage. Fixing such a dumb couple is useless. Couples who make mistakes can forgive each other, Couples who are forced to make choices can move on in their life but couple who willingly make choice to seek some other person despite both knew where they stand in their life is dumbness. Its like they gave up on their marriage long time back and they do not care anymore. ~RCF
