Chapter 10— Parallel Lives

Chennai rain had a way of making everything feel slightly more personal than it should.

Even distance.

Even silence.

Even thoughts that people pretended not to have.

---

Shruthi’s World

At office, Shruthi was already seated when Karthik arrived.

He placed a file gently on her desk.

“Morning.”

She didn’t look up immediately.

“Morning.”

A pause.

Then Karthik added:

“You’re early today.”

Shruthi finally glanced at him.

“I’m always early. The world just wakes up late.”

“That sounds philosophical.”

“It’s just irritation disguised as philosophy.”

Karthik smiled.

He had started doing that a lot lately.

Not loudly.

Not excessively.

Just enough to make her notice.

---

By lunchtime, they were again in the cafeteria.

It had become a pattern neither of them had formally agreed on, but both had accepted silently.

Karthik pushed her plate slightly toward her.

“You didn’t eat breakfast again.”

Shruthi looked at him.

“How do you know everything I don’t tell you?”

“I observe.”

“That’s how serial killers start conversations.”

He laughed.

“I’m a harmless trainee, not a thriller character.”

Shruthi leaned back slightly.

“That’s exactly what thriller characters say.”

They both laughed again.

---

Then, casually, Karthik said:

“My sister still talks about you sometimes.”

Shruthi raised an eyebrow.

“Oh no.”

“She says you were strict in college.”

“I was efficient.”

“She calls it trauma.”

“She survived. That’s enough.”

Karthik shook his head smiling.

“You haven’t changed much, right?”

Shruthi thought for a second.

“I’ve become more patient.”

“That sounds fake.”

“It is slightly fake.”

He laughed again.

And Shruthi realized something quietly—

this conversation felt easy in a way her home conversations hadn’t felt recently.

Not better.

Just lighter.

---

Lokesh’s World

Evening arrived differently for Lokesh.

Not faster.

Not slower.

Just more physically exhausting.

He reached home earlier than Shruthi that day with Hasini sitting on his shoulders, narrating a story about a boy who refused to share crayons and therefore “became villain of class.”

Lokesh listened seriously.

“Hm. That boy is dangerous.”

“Yes Appa!”

“Very bad influence.”

Hasini nodded gravely.

“Should we arrest him?”

Lokesh smiled faintly.

“Let’s inform college first.”

---

As they entered the apartment, their neighbor Laila stepped out of her door at the same time.

She was holding grocery bags and looked slightly tired.

“Oh, perfect timing,” she said casually. “Lift is not working again.”

Lokesh nodded.

“Again?”

“Always again.”

Hasini immediately peeked from behind Lokesh.

“Hi aunty!”

Laila smiled.

“Hi little boss.”

Lokesh adjusted Hasini on his arm.

“You coming from office?”

“Yeah. Dead day.”

She looked at Hasini.

“She looks more energetic than me.”

Lokesh replied calmly:

“That’s her job.”

Laila laughed.

“That’s true.”

Then added while adjusting her bag:

“By the way, your daughter once told me I walk like cartoon character.”

Lokesh looked down.

“That sounds accurate.”

Laila raised an eyebrow.

“You’re not defending me?”

“I don’t have evidence against her observation.”

That made her laugh properly.

---

At the lift, they stood together waiting.

The silence was comfortable.

Not forced.

Just shared routine.

Laila leaned slightly on the wall.

“You always come home early?”

“Most days.”

“Family man.”

Lokesh nodded.

“Something like that.”

She smiled faintly.

“That must be nice… having fixed reason to leave work.”

Lokesh looked ahead.

“It’s not nice or not nice. It’s just… required.”

Laila nodded.

“Still sounds stable.”

He didn’t respond immediately.

Then:

“Stable is good.”

That was the end of it.

No emotional weight.

Just normal neighbor conversation.

But repeated often enough, normal becomes familiarity.

---

Back at Shruthi’s Office

That same evening, Shruthi was leaving late with Karthik again.

Rain had just started.

He held an umbrella slightly tilted toward her.

“You always stay this late?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Don’t you get tired?”

“I am tired.”

“But you still stay.”

She glanced at him.

“That’s job.”

“That sounds sad.”

“It’s not sad. It’s routine.”

Karthik stayed quiet for a moment.

Then said:

“You smile more when you’re not in meetings.”

Shruthi stopped walking slightly.

Looked at him.

“You observe too much.”

“I think I just notice when people change tone.”

That made her silent for a moment longer than expected.

Then she simply said:

“See you tomorrow.”

“See you.”

---

Home Again

That night, Shruthi returned home to find Lokesh folding clothes near the sofa while Hasini watched cartoons half-asleep.

The apartment smelled of rice and mild rain.

Normal.

Safe.

Predictable.

---

Lokesh looked up.

“Late again.”

“Work.”

“Hm.”

A pause.

Then he added:

“Laila was asking about lift again today.”

Shruthi raised an eyebrow.

“Who is Laila?”

“Neighbor.”

“Ah.”

That was it.

No curiosity.

Just acknowledgment.

---

Later, after Hasini slept, they both sat in the living room quietly.

No television.

No phone noise.

Just rain outside.

Lokesh spoke first.

“Your trainee seems active.”

Shruthi looked at him.

“Karthik?”

“Hm.”

“Yes. He’s learning.”

Lokesh nodded.

“That’s good.”

And again—

no jealousy.

No tension.

Just awareness.

Like both of them were slowly observing each other’s expanding worlds without fully stepping into them.

---

Shruthi leaned back slightly.

“You know what’s strange?”

“Hm?”

“We talk less now.”

Lokesh didn’t respond immediately.

Then:

“We’re tired more.”

She nodded.

“Maybe.”

Silence returned.

Not heavy.

Just present.

---

Outside, rain continued washing Chennai like it always did—

quietly covering distances people pretended didn’t exist,

while inside the same home, two people still sat side by side…

slowly learning how to live parallel lives without yet calling it separation.

Chapter 11— Misunderstood light

It started with something small.

That was always how these things began.
Not with arguments.
But with a sudden, heightened awareness of space—and who was occupying it.

Shruthi reached home earlier than usual that evening.
The rain outside had turned heavy, a thick, humid downpour that made the air in the corridor feel warm and close.

She stepped out of the lift, the dampness clinging to her skin, and paused.
Voices.

Laughter.

She recognized Lokesh’s low, familiar rumble immediately.
And then another voice, softer, pitched in a way that made the narrow corridor feel suddenly intimate.

Laila.
Shruthi didn't move.

She stood frozen, her fingers tightening around the strap of her office bag, her senses hyper-attuned to the sound.

“I told you, that pipe will leak again,” Laila was saying. Her voice carried a breathless, teasing quality, a little too near.

Lokesh replied, his tone lower than usual, “It already leaked twice this month.”

“Then why don’t you complain properly?”

“To whom?”

“To the society office, obviously.”

A brief, heavy pause. Shruthi could hear the rustle of clothing, the shift of weight.

Then Laila laughed—a low, lingering sound.
“Same answer every time. You men just suffer silently and act like it’s philosophy.”

When Lokesh spoke, his voice dropped an octave, brushing past the humid air.

“It’s not philosophy. It’s laziness.”

That made her laugh grow softer, more private.
Shruthi finally stepped forward.

The sharp click of her sandals broke the quiet hum of the corridor. Both of them looked up instantly.

For a split second, the air between them felt thick, caught in a state of sudden interruption.

Lokesh shifted, straightening up from where he had been leaning against the wall, a little too close to Laila’s doorway.

“You came early.” His eyes locked onto hers, searching.
“Yes.”

Laila smiled, her gaze lingering on Shruthi for a beat before she smoothed down her top.

“Hi.”
Shruthi nodded, her throat dry.

“Hi.”
It was a completely normal greeting.

But as Shruthi walked past them, the faint, distinct scent of Laila’s perfume—something warm and sweet—mingled with the scent of the rain, sticking to her.

A strange, sharp spike of awareness bloomed in her chest.
She didn’t want to name it.

That night, the heat from the rain outside seemed to trap itself indoors.
After dinner, Shruthi sat on the edge of the bed, the fabric of her nightwear suddenly feeling too restrictive.

She scrolled through her phone mindlessly.

In the hall, Lokesh was helping Hasini with a drawing assignment. Their voices were faint, muffled by the closed bedroom door.
Normal home sounds.

But Shruthi’s skin felt flushed. Her mind kept replaying the image in the corridor: the proximity between Lokesh and Laila, the ease in Lokesh’s posture, the way the low lighting of the hallway had caught the edge of Laila’s smile.

It wasn't inappropriate. But it was *effortless*. A kind of effortless warmth that had gone cold in this bedroom.

Her phone vibrated in her palm, the sudden buzz making her flinch.
Karthik: *“Did you eat?”*

She stared at the glowing screen. The text felt heavy, intrusive, yet intensely present.

She replied: *“Yes.”*

A second message flashed almost instantly.

Karthik: *“You sound tired.”*

She hesitated, her thumb hovering over the keyboard as she leaned back against the headboard, feeling the cool wood against her bare shoulders.
*“Everyone is tired nowadays.”*

Karthik: *“But you sound like you’re carrying more than work. I can feel it.”*

Shruthi read it twice, her breath hitching slightly. It was a dangerous kind of attention—someone reading between her lines, looking at her too closely through a screen when the man in the next room wasn't looking at all.
Later that night, Shruthi walked out into the dimly lit hall.

The fan was whirring slowly overhead, cutting through the warm air. Lokesh was standing by the table, slowly folding a sheet of cloth. His shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his chest rising and falling in a slow rhythm.
As she entered, his movements paused.

Their eyes met, and the silence that followed wasn't just empty—it was charged, thick with things unsaid.

Lokesh’s gaze dropped to the phone gripped tightly in her hand, then back up to her face.

“You came early, but you’re still attached to that phone,” he said, his voice quiet, dropping into the stillness of the room.

“Work message.”
“Hm.”

He didn't step closer, but his eyes remained on her, intense and unblinking. The absence of his questions felt like a physical weight between them.

Shruthi took a step forward, the fabric of her dress whispering against her legs.
“You and Laila talk a lot nowadays.”

Lokesh’s hands stayed still on the cloth. He let out a slow, quiet breath.
“She lives nearby. It’s just small talk, Shruthi.”

Shruthi didn't answer. She let her gaze linger on him, noting the tension in his shoulders, the sudden defensiveness in the way he stood. The air between them felt tight, like a string pulled too taut.

Lokesh took a half-step toward her, his voice dropping lower, almost a murmur.

“Why? Does it bother you?”

Shruthi looked at him, her heart thumping against her ribs. For a second, the distance between them felt entirely physical, a gap that could be closed with a single movement. But neither of them moved.
“Nothing,” she whispered.

But the word felt heavy, loaded with a completely different meaning.
Later, in the dark of the bedroom, the air was suffocatingly still.

Lokesh lay on his side, his back turned to her. His breathing was deep, even, but Shruthi could tell from the rigid line of his shoulders that he wasn't asleep. He was just as awake, just as aware of her as she was of him.
She lay on her back, staring at the ceiling, her skin sensitive to the slightest shift in the mattress.

Her phone screen illuminated the dark room again.
Karthik: *“If you want to talk, I’m awake. I'm listening.”*

Shruthi looked from the glowing screen to the dark silhouette of her husband’s back.
The contrast was sharp—the warm, dangerous pull of the text message versus the cold, heavy tension radiating from Lokesh.

Slowly, her fingers trembled slightly over the keyboard. She typed:
*“I don’t know what I’m feeling right now.”*

She stared at the words, her breath shallow. Then, with a sharp intake of air, she deleted them.

Instead, she sent: *“Nothing. Goodnight.”*

Outside, the rain continued to slick the streets, steady and relentless, soaking through everything it touched.

And inside the quiet apartment, the space between the husband and the wife felt narrower than ever, yet impossibly wide—charged with a restless, unspoken heat, and a misunderstanding that was beginning to take deep, undeniable root.

CHAPTER:12 The newly weds,Laila o Laila

Lokesh and shruthi settled in their bed, after the daily exhausting routine was over. The over heared through the wall, and...

The moonlight sliced through the humid night air, casting long, silver ribbons across the courtyard that separated the two bedroom wings of the villa.

Shah Rukh stood by his window, the glass cool against his forehead, his breath fogging the pane.

He watched Laila. She was in her own room, barely ten feet away across the open air, her silhouette framed by the amber glow of a bedside lamp.

They were newlyweds, yet the architecture of their new home—a sprawling, eccentric estate—had placed their primary sleeping quarters in separate pavilions connected by a glass walkway.

Tonight, the walkway felt like a canyon.

Laila leaned against her window frame, her silk robe slipping from one shoulder to reveal the creamy curve of her breast.
She didn't speak, but her eyes, dark and hungry, locked onto his. The silence between the windows vibrated with a tension that felt like a physical weight.

"You're staring," Laila whispered, her voice carrying across the narrow gap, a low velvet rasp that sent a jolt of electricity straight to Shah Rukh's groin.

"I can't look away," Shah Rukh replied.

He shifted, the fabric of his linen trousers tightening over the heavy, aching length of his cock.

"You know exactly what you're doing to me."
Laila let out a soft, mocking laugh and slowly let the robe slide completely off her shoulders.

It pooled at her feet in a shimmering heap of emerald silk. She stood naked in the amber light, her nipples dark and peaked, her hips swaying slightly as she pressed her palms against the glass.

"And what is it I'm doing, Shah Rukh?" she asked, her voice dripping with a challenge.

"You're making me want to tear this house down just to get to you faster," he groaned.

He didn't wait for her answer. He turned and sprinted across the glass walkway, the slap of his bare feet echoing in the sterile corridor.

He burst into her room, the scent of jasmine and warm skin hitting him like a wave.

He didn't say a word; he simply grabbed her by the waist and slammed her back against the window glass.
The impact made her gasp, her back arching, her breasts pressing firmly against his chest.

He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling the salt and sweetness of her skin.

"Finally," Laila breathed, her fingers digging into the muscles of his shoulders.

"I thought you'd spend the whole night admiring me from a distance."

"I've had enough distance for one lifetime," he muttered.

He reached down, his hand diving between her thighs. He found her already soaking, her pussy drenched, the folds of her lips slick with anticipation.

He slid two fingers deep inside her with a sudden, forceful thrust. Laila let out a sharp cry, her head snapping back against the glass with a dull thud.

"You're so wet," Shah Rukh whispered, his voice thick with lust.

"Did you think about me while you were watching me?"

"I thought about your cock," she whimpered, her hips grinding instinctively against his hand.

"I thought about how it feels when you stretch me open. Please, Shah Rukh. Now."

He didn't need further invitation. He stripped his trousers off in one frantic motion, his cock springing free, thick and pulsing, a bead of pre-cum glistening at the tip.

He gripped her thighs, hoisting her up so her legs wrapped around his waist. He aligned the head of his cock with her dripping opening and pushed.

He entered her in one long, devastating slide. The sound was a wet, heavy squelch as he buried himself to the hilt, his balls slapping hard against her perineum. Laila screamed into his shoulder, her internal muscles clamping tight around him, milking him with desperate intensity.

"God, you're so tight," he gasped, his eyes closing as the heat of her engulfed him.

"Don't stop," she pleaded, her voice breaking. "Harder. I want to feel you hit my cervix. Break me open, Shah Rukh."

He began to move, his thrusts raw and uncoordinated, driven by a hunger that bordered on violence. The window behind her rattled in its frame with every collision.

The sound of their bodies meeting—the rhythmic, wet shlicking of skin on skin—filled the room. He could feel the friction building, the slide of his foreskin retreating and advancing as he hammered into her.

"Look at me," he commanded, pulling back until he was almost out, then slamming back in.

Laila opened her eyes, her pupils dilated, her expression one of pure, unadulterated craving. She looked at him not as a husband, but as a storm she wanted to be consumed by.

"I can feel you," she moaned, her voice vibrating against his skin.

"I can feel every inch of you filling me. You're so big... you're stretching me so wide."

"I want to leave my mark on you," he groaned, increasing the pace..

The friction became intense, a searing heat that blurred the edges of his consciousness. He felt her walls begin to quiver, the first tremors of an orgasm rippling through her.
Laila's breath came in short, jagged hitches, her nails scratching red furrows into his back.

"I'm coming," she shrieked, her body stiffening. "Shah Rukh, I'm—!"

Her climax hit like a tidal wave, her pussy pulsing in rhythmic contractions that squeezed his cock with agonizing precision. The sensation pushed him over the edge.

He let out a guttural roar, his body shuddering as he erupted inside her. He felt the hot jets of his semen shooting deep against her cervix, filling her to overflowing. He stayed buried in her, his chest heaving, their sweat mixing and gluing them together.

As he slowly slid out, a mixture of cream and lubrication leaked from her, dripping down her thighs and onto the hardwood floor with a soft patter.

"Round one," Laila whispered, her voice shaky, a small, triumphant smile on her lips.

They collapsed onto the bed, the sheets instantly bunching and twisting under their weight.

They lay in silence for a moment, the adrenaline slowly receding, leaving behind a humming void of longing. They didn't speak of the distance between their rooms, or the strange tension of their new life, but the way they clung to each other spoke of a deeper hunger—a need to bridge a gap that wasn't just architectural.

"I feel like fucking you all night," Shah Rukh murmured, his hand tracing the curve of her hip.

"Then don't stop touching me," Laila replied, rolling over to pin him beneath her.

She began to kiss him, her tongue sliding into his mouth with a greedy intensity. She sucked on his tongue, the exchange of saliva loud and wet in the quiet room.

Her hands wandered, her nipples brushing against his chest as she moved. She slid down his body, her hair cascading over his stomach like a curtain of silk.

When she reached his cock, which was already beginning to stir again, she didn't hesitate.

She wrapped her lips around the head, her tongue swirling around the rim before she took him deep into her throat.

"Fuck," Shah Rukh groaned, his hips bucking upward. "Laila, you're going to kill me."

She looked up at him, her eyes mischievous, a string of saliva connecting her lip to the head of his cock. She began to bob her head with a rhythmic, suctioning motion, the sound of her mouth working on him—a wet, slurping noise—filling the space. She used her hand to stroke the base, her thumb rubbing over his balls, which were tight and heavy.

"You like that?" she asked, pulling off for a second, her voice muffled.

"I love it. God, I love you," he gasped.

She dove back down, her tongue flickering over the frenulum, sending sparks of pleasure through his spine.

She sucked harder, creating a vacuum that felt like it was pulling the very soul out of him. Shah Rukh reached down, his fingers tangling in her hair, guiding her movements, pushing her deeper until she gagged slightly.

He didn't stop, the raw sensation of her mouth driving him toward another peak.

Eventually, he couldn't take the torture. He gripped her waist and flipped her over, pulling her back onto the bed. He knelt between her legs, staring at her pussy, which was still glistening and pink from their first encounter.

"I want to taste you again," he whispered.
He lowered his head, his tongue flicking out to lap at her clit. Laila arched her back, a loud moan escaping her lips.

He was methodical, his tongue swirling in circles, then darting deep into her opening. He could taste the salt of her sweat and the creamy tang of his own semen still leaking from her.
He sucked her clit into his mouth, pulling it gently, creating a suction that made her hips jerk uncontrollably.

"Yes! Right there!" she cried, her hands gripping the headboard.

"Don't stop, please, just keep doing that!"
The sound of his tongue slapping against her wetness—a rhythmic, squelching noise—was the only sound in the room besides her frantic breathing.

He moved his tongue faster, flickering against the most sensitive nerves, while his fingers entered her, stretching her open to better access her depths.

Laila's orgasm was slower this time, a building swell of pleasure that peaked in a long, shuddering release. She whimpered, her body undulating beneath him, her pussy clamping down on his fingers.

Shah Rukh didn't give her time to recover. He rose, his cock fully erect and throbbing. He positioned himself, the head of his cock rubbing against her clit before he plunged inside.

This time, the sex was different. It wasn't the desperate crash of the first round; it was a slow, grinding exploration. He moved with a deliberate pace, sliding out until only the tip remained, then pushing back in with a slow, heavy pressure.

"Do you feel that?" he asked, his voice a low rumble.

"Feel what?" she gasped, her eyes half-closed.

"How much I want you. Not just your body. Everything."

Laila reached up, pulling his face down to hers. "I feel it. I feel it in the way you're shaking. I feel it in the way you're filling me up."

They moved together in a slow, hypnotic rhythm.

The sound of their bodies meeting was a wet, rhythmic thud. He could feel the walls of her pussy gripping him, the friction creating a heat that felt like it could ignite the sheets. He shifted his angle, lifting her legs over his shoulders so he could go deeper.

As he thrust, he felt his cock slip out slightly due to the sheer amount of lubrication between them. The head of his cock slapped against her outer lips with a loud, fleshy sound before he corrected the angle and drove back in, the air being pushed out of her orifice with a soft, whistling pop..

"You're so slippery," he chuckled, the sound vibrating in his chest..

"It's because of you," she panted. "You've turned me into a mess."

"A beautiful mess," he replied, kissing her deeply.
The intensity built again, but this time it was an emotional crescendo.

They weren't just rubbing skin; they were trying to merge, to erase the distance that the house, and perhaps their own hesitations, had created. He felt the tension in her thighs, the way she wrapped her legs around his back to pull him closer, trying to eliminate every millimeter of space.

When the end came, it was a synchronized explosion. They cried out together, their voices mingling in a harmony of release. Shah Rukh poured himself into her again, the force of his orgasm making him tremble violently.

Laila clung to him, her breath sobbing against his neck.

They lay there for a long time, their hearts hammering against each other's ribs. The room was thick with the smell of sex—musk, sweat, and the metallic tang of desire.

"I can't sleep," Laila whispered, her voice barely audible.

"Me neither," Shah Rukh replied, staring up at the ceiling. "My mind is still racing."

They drifted into a light, restless sleep, but the peace was short-lived. The adrenaline of the first two rounds had left them in a state of hyper-awareness. Every brush of skin, every sigh, every shift in position reignited the fire.

Around three in the morning, Shah Rukh woke to find Laila watching him.

Her eyes were wide, shimmering in the dim light. She didn't say anything; she simply reached down and wrapped her hand around his cock, which had returned to its full rigidity.

"Again?" he asked, his voice a dry rasp.

"I can't stop thinking about the way you looked at me through the glass," she whispered. "The hunger. I want that hunger again.".

The third round was the storm. There was no slow build, no gentle exploration.

It was a collision. He flipped her onto her stomach, pulling her hips high in the air. He entered her from behind, a sudden, forceful thrust that made her scream into the pillow.

"Yes! Like that! Harder!" she yelled.

He gripped her hips, his fingers digging into her flesh, leaving white marks that would soon turn red. He hammered into her, the sound of his balls slapping against her ass creating a loud, rhythmic percussion.

The friction was intense, the wetness of their union creating a squelching sound that echoed in the quiet room.

"You're mine," he groaned, his voice sounding like it came from the bottom of a well. "Do you hear me? You're mine.".

"I've always been yours!" she shrieked, her voice cracking.

He reached around, his hand finding her clit and rubbing it vigorously as he continued to pump into her. Laila was losing her mind, her body shaking, her breath coming in erratic gasps. The sex was messy; sweat flew from their bodies, and the scent of their arousal was overpowering.

At one point, in his overzealous thrusting, his cock slipped entirely out of her. He didn't miss a beat, the head of his cock slapping hard against her backside before he guided it back in with a wet, heavy thud.

"I can't get enough of you," he gasped, his movements becoming frantic. "I want to drown in you."

"Then do it!" she screamed. "Drown me! Take everything!".

The finale was a violent, shuddering peak. Shah Rukh felt the pressure build in his loins, a mounting tension that felt like a string about to snap.

He let out a guttural yell, his body locking up as he discharged a final, massive load of semen into her. Laila's own climax hit her with such force that she collapsed onto the bed, her muscles twitching in the aftershock.

They lay in a heap of tangled limbs and damp sheets, the air in the room heavy and still. The moonlight had shifted, the silver ribbons now crossing the bed, illuminating the wreckage of their passion.

"I think," Laila panted, her voice a mere ghost of itself, "that we might need to move the furniture."

Shah Rukh chuckled, a weak, exhausted sound.

"Or we just knock down the wall between the wings."
"I like that idea," she whispered.

They didn't sleep for the rest of the night. They stayed awake, talking in low tones about things they hadn't dared to mention during the courtship—their fears, their hopes, the strange, magnetic pull they felt toward one another that defied logic. The proximity of the windows, the separation of the rooms, it had all served as a catalyst, turning their newlyweds' bliss into a fever dream of obsession.

As the first light of dawn began to bleed into the sky, painting the courtyard in shades of bruised purple and gold, they finally fell into a deep, dreamless stupor, locked in an embrace so tight it was impossible to tell where one ended and the other began. The house, with its eccentric layout and distant windows, no longer felt like a barrier. It felt like a playground.

Shah Rukh woke briefly just as the sun hit the glass of the window. He looked over at Laila, her face peaceful, her skin glowing in the morning light. He remembered the way she had looked through that glass only hours before—the silhouette of desire, the promise of the storm. He smiled, pulling her closer, the scent of their night still clinging to them like a second skin.

Chapter 13— Invitations

Rainwater still clung to the apartment corridor grills when dawn slowly entered the building.

Most doors remained closed.

Most lives remained asleep.

But inside the flat opposite Lokesh and Shruthi’s apartment, soft yellow kitchen light was already glowing.

---

Laila stood near the stove stirring tea while half-awake music played from her phone.

Behind her, Shah Rukh walked into the kitchen rubbing his eyes, hair messy, still carrying sleep on his face.

Hugged her from behind with a deep kiss, made them remember their hot passionate breeding.

“You’re making tea this early?” he asked.

Laila didn’t turn immediately.

“You said yesterday your head was hurting.”

“Hm… I also said I’ll wake up early and help.”

“You waking up itself is help.”

He smiled faintly and leaned against the kitchen entrance watching her.

---

“Today traffic will be horrible,” Shahrukh muttered.

“Every day you say that.”

“Because every day Chennai proves me correct.”

Shah Rukh laughed softly.

Then slowly walked closer behind her.

Without speaking, he rested his chin lightly on her shoulder for a brief moment.

Not dramatic.

Not passionate.

Just familiar affection before the world fully woke up.

Laila relaxed instinctively against him.

“You’ll spill tea,” she warned softly.

“You’ll make another.”

“Confidence level too high.”

“Husband privilege.”

That finally made her smile.

---

A few seconds later, the pressure cooker whistle from another apartment broke the quiet intimacy of the morning.

Real life returning.

As always.

Laila handed him tea.

“Go wake up properly before office.”

Shah Rukh took the cup and looked at her carefully.

“You’re tired.”

“You’re observing too much these days.”

“You’re hiding too much these days.”

That line stayed between them briefly.

Then Laila brushed it away with practiced ease.

“Drink tea first, philosopher.”

---

Across the corridor, Shruthi’s apartment was slowly waking too.

Hasini was already talking loudly about college projects no one fully understood.

Lokesh searched for his car keys while simultaneously answering office messages.

Shruthi stood near the mirror adjusting her earrings quietly.

From outside, they still looked like a perfect functioning family.

That was the strange thing about emotional distance.

Most people never noticed it.

---

When Shruthi stepped outside carrying the garbage bag, she almost collided with Laila exiting her own flat.

Both paused.

Then smiled politely.

“Morning,” Laila said.

“Morning.”

Laila adjusted her handbag and sighed dramatically.

“I already lost motivation to go to office.”

Shruthi laughed lightly.

“Day hasn’t started.”

“That’s exactly why I’m worried.”

Their conversation flowed more naturally now than before.

Not friendship exactly.

But neighboring familiarity.

---

As they walked toward the lift together, Laila suddenly said:

“Your husband saved my morning today.”

Shruthi looked up.

“Hm?”

“My scooter refused to start downstairs. Full drama. He helped move it before traffic blocked everybody.”

“Oh.”

“He got completely wet also because of rain.”

Laila shook her head laughing.

“Very heroic behavior for someone who looked half-asleep.”

Shruthi smiled faintly.

But internally, something small tightened again.

Not suspicion.

Just awareness.

---

Downstairs, Lokesh stood near the car wiping rainwater from his hands.

Hasini sat inside humming loudly to herself.

When Shruthi approached, Lokesh opened the passenger door casually.

“You’re late.”

“You’re wet.”

“It’s raining, madam.”

The dry reply made Hasini laugh from inside the car.

“Appa became water buffalo!”

Lokesh sighed dramatically.

“Thank you for support.”

---

The drive through Chennai traffic carried its usual rhythm:

honking,

rainwater splashing,

bikes squeezing through impossible spaces,

roadside tea stalls already crowded.

Hasini filled most of the silence with stories from college.

Lokesh listened patiently.

Shruthi watched him quietly while pretending to look outside.

Sometimes she forgot how naturally dependable he was.

Not exciting in obvious ways.

But stable.

Solid.

The kind of man people leaned on without noticing the weight he carried.

---

After dropping Hasini at college, Lokesh parked briefly outside Shruthi’s office.

Before she got down, he spoke casually while checking his watch.

“I may come late tonight.”

“Meeting?”

“Hm.”

“I’ll also be late probably.”

Lokesh nodded once.

“Okay.”

No questions.

No follow-up.

That calm acceptance again.

And suddenly Shruthi missed the older version of him that used to ask: With whom? Why late? Did you eat?

Now both of them behaved like adults carefully giving each other space.

Too much space perhaps.

---

Inside the office, things felt lighter almost immediately.

Karthik was waiting near her cabin with coffee already in hand.

“You survived traffic?”

“Barely.”

“I brought backup caffeine.”

Shruthi looked at the cup.

“You’re becoming dangerous.”

“I’m becoming trained.”

She laughed softly before taking it.

Again that same effortless ease.

No emotional heaviness.

No unfinished tension.

Just conversation flowing naturally.

---

Throughout the day, they worked closely on presentations and client revisions.

But somewhere between work discussions, friendship had quietly settled in.

Not forced.

Not announced.

Simply present.

---

At lunch, Karthik sat opposite her in the cafeteria while scrolling through his phone.

“My sister called me ten times today.”

“That means she needs something.”

“She always needs something.”

“True.”

A few seconds later, Shruthi’s own phone rang.

Divya.

She answered immediately.

“Madam finally remembered me?”

Divya’s loud voice exploded through the speaker.

“Excuse me! Married people disappear after children.”

Shruthi laughed.

“What happened?”

“Next Sunday. My second child’s first birthday. You and your husband are compulsory coming.”

“Compulsory ah?”

“Yes. And bring Hasini.”

Karthik looked up instantly hearing his sister’s voice.

Shruthi noticed and put the call slightly on speaker.

Divya continued:

“And tell that useless brother of mine to come early and help arrangements instead of acting like CEO.”

Karthik groaned immediately.

“I can hear you!”

“Good. Then hear properly.”

Shruthi laughed harder now.

For a few moments, office pressure disappeared completely.

It felt like old college days again:

noise,

teasing,

people talking over each other,

uncomplicated familiarity.

And Karthik watched Shruthi during that laughter quietly.

Because this version of her— lighter, warmer, unguarded—

was becoming his favorite without him realizing it fully yet.

---

That evening, while returning home through rain-soaked streets, Shruthi kept thinking about the birthday invitation.

Different parts of her life were slowly moving toward the same place:

Lokesh,

Karthik,

Divya,

family,

friendship,

distance,

familiarity.

And somewhere deep inside, she could already feel it—

something subtle was changing shape around all of them.

Chapter 14 — Old Eyes, Old Wounds

Sunday evening arrived wrapped in noise, balloons, traffic, and forced smiles.

The banquet hall in Coimbatore wasn’t luxurious, but it was lively in the way family functions always were: children running everywhere, relatives shouting over each other, someone constantly adjusting decorations, someone constantly asking where the cake knife had gone.

At the entrance, pastel-colored balloons framed a giant board:

“Aarav Turns One”

Inside, chaos felt warm.

---

Shruthi adjusted Hasini’s dress while standing near the entrance mirror.

“Don’t run,” she warned.

Hasini nodded immediately.

Then ran anyway.

Lokesh sighed.

“Your parenting influence.”

“My genetics are innocent.”

“That’s scientifically impossible.”

She almost smiled.

Almost.

---

Before they could move further inside, a loud voice cut through the crowd.

“SHRUTHI!”

Divya.

Exactly the same energy as college days.

She came rushing toward them in a bright green saree, bangles jingling loudly enough to announce emotional destruction in advance.

Shruthi laughed properly for the first time that day.

“Oh my god.”

Divya hugged her tightly.

“You still look irritatingly good.”

“You still speak without brakes.”

“Correct.”

Then Divya turned dramatically toward Lokesh.

And for one brief second—

time paused.

---

Their eyes met.

Just one second.

But enough.

Enough for memory to move silently between them.

College corridors.
Canteen laughter.
Group studies that became emotional complications.
Long bike rides after symposiums.
And feelings that had never been spoken aloud properly.

---

Divya smiled immediately afterward.

Perfectly normal.

Perfectly controlled.

“Lokesh.”

“Hi Divya.”

Warm tone.

Friendly.

Safe.

But Shruthi noticed something.

A flicker.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

Still there.

---

Before silence stretched further, Divya turned around and shouted:

“GANESH!”

A man in his mid-thirties approached holding a sleeping baby awkwardly while simultaneously balancing a juice glass.

“Why are you yelling from entrance itself?” he asked.

Then noticed them.

“Oh.”

Divya grinned proudly.

“This is Shruthi. My college best friend. And this is her husband, Lokesh.”

Ganesh immediately smiled warmly.

“So finally I meet the famous people.”

Shruthi laughed.

“Famous ah?”

“My wife talks about college stories like mythology.”

Divya rolled her eyes.

“Because we survived engineering trauma together.”

Ganesh shifted the baby carefully.

“And apparently this fellow”—he pointed at Lokesh—“was college hero.”

Lokesh groaned instantly.

“That rumor needs to die.”

Shruthi smirked faintly.

“It won’t.”

---

Karthik arrived at the entrance at that exact moment carrying gift bags.

“Akka, where should I keep—”

He stopped seeing everyone together.

Then immediately smiled.

“Hi.”

Ganesh looked confused.

“You all know each other already ah?”

Divya answered dramatically:

“Entire universe is connected through engineering colleges.”

---

As conversations continued, old familiarity slowly returned.

Shruthi and Divya slipped easily into college-style teasing.

Lokesh remained calmer, more observant.

Karthik moved around helping with arrangements while occasionally glancing toward Shruthi unconsciously.

And Divya noticed everything.

Absolutely everything.

---

Later in the evening, during cake arrangements, Divya and Lokesh ended up standing near the juice counter alone briefly.

Crowd noise filled the gap around them.

For a few seconds, neither spoke.

Then Divya smiled faintly.

“Still the same calm face.”

Lokesh looked at her.

“You’re still dramatic.”

“That’s my brand.”

A small silence followed.

Not uncomfortable.

Just full of history.

---

Then quietly, almost casually, Divya asked:

“You both happy?”

Lokesh blinked slightly at the directness.

“Hm?”

“You and Shruthi.”

He answered carefully.

“Yes.”

Divya nodded slowly.

But her eyes lingered on him a second longer.

Because years ago, before Shruthi and Lokesh officially became a couple…

Divya had already fallen for him silently.

Nobody fully knew.

Or maybe Shruthi knew and chose not to acknowledge it.

Back then, Lokesh had naturally gravitated toward Shruthi:

her confidence,

her sharpness,

the way she challenged him constantly.

And Divya—

loud, emotional, affectionate Divya—

had become the friend standing slightly outside the center of that story.

---

She had eventually moved on.

Married Ganesh.

Built a good life.

Had children.

Found stability.

Yet somewhere deep inside, an old emotional scar had never fully disappeared.

Not because Lokesh rejected her cruelly.

But because Shruthi unknowingly became the woman Divya could never compete with.

---

Across the hall, Shruthi stood speaking with Ganesh while watching Hasini chase balloons.

Ganesh laughed suddenly.

“You know what Divya told me before marriage?”

Shruthi looked up suspiciously.

“What?”

“That if I wanted peace in life, I should never argue with women from your college.”

Shruthi burst into laughter.

“That sounds accurate.”

Ganesh leaned closer slightly.

“She also said you were the smartest person in your batch.”

Shruthi rolled her eyes.

“She exaggerates everything.”

But even while smiling, she noticed something else—

Divya and Lokesh talking quietly near the juice counter.

Nothing inappropriate.

Nothing secretive.

Still…

something about that visual unsettled her unexpectedly.

---

At the same moment, Karthik walked beside her carrying plates.

“You okay?” he asked softly.

Shruthi looked at him.

“Why?”

“You suddenly went quiet.”

She glanced once more toward Divya and Lokesh.

Then replied casually:

“Nothing.”

But internally, something had shifted again.

Because for the first time, she was seeing another woman share history with her husband—

history she herself wasn’t fully present inside.

And somewhere nearby, Divya was smiling warmly while carrying an old grudge carefully hidden beneath friendliness.

Not because she still wanted Lokesh.

But because part of her had never forgiven Shruthi for effortlessly becoming the woman everyone chose first.

Chapter 15 — After the Crowd Left

By ten-thirty, the birthday party had begun shedding people slowly.

That was how family functions always ended.

Not dramatically.

One family at a time.
One goodbye at a time.
One sleepy child carried out at a time.

The loud energy that had filled the banquet hall earlier was now softening into scattered conversations and half-finished plates.

Balloons drooped slightly.

Children had exhausted themselves.

The music volume had lowered.

And the night had finally become personal again.

---

Shruthi sat near the edge of the hall removing the tiny plastic crown Hasini had earlier forced onto her head.

“Never again,” she muttered.

Karthik laughed from beside her.

“You actually wore it for fifteen minutes.”

“She emotionally blackmailed me.”

“That child has leadership qualities.”

“She has dictatorship qualities.”

Both laughed softly.

And from across the hall, Divya noticed it immediately.

Not the laughter itself.

The ease.

The comfort.

The unconscious rhythm between them.

Interesting, she thought quietly.

Very interesting.

---

At that moment, Ganesh’s phone rang.

He glanced at the screen and frowned immediately.

“Damn.”

Divya looked up.

“What happened?”

“Factory issue. Night shift problem.”

“You have to go?”

“Hm. Ten-minute issue becoming two-hour issue probably.”

Divya sighed dramatically.

“Marriage to businessman is scam.”

Ganesh leaned down briefly near her.

“Sorry.”

“It’s okay. Go.”

Then he turned toward Lokesh and Shruthi.

“Looks like adult life has attacked me again.”

Lokesh smiled faintly.

“Go handle it.”

Ganesh nodded, patted Karthik’s shoulder casually while passing, and left in a hurry after another apologetic goodbye.

---

After he left, the atmosphere changed subtly.

Not awkward.

Just smaller.

More intimate.

Now only four adults remained near the dining section:

Divya,

Lokesh,

Shruthi,

Karthik.

Outside, rain tapped softly against the banquet hall windows.

Inside, workers quietly began clearing unused tables.

---

Divya suddenly clapped once.

“Okay. Now actual peace.”

Shruthi narrowed her eyes.

“You become more dangerous after 10 PM.”

“Correct.”

Then Divya looked directly at Lokesh.

“Drink?”

Lokesh blinked.

“Now?”

“Yes now.”

“I have to drive.”

“You can survive one small peg, Mr. Responsible.”

Lokesh looked mildly tempted.

Shruthi noticed immediately.

Divya already walked toward the side counter where leftover bottles from the celebration remained.

“Come,” she ordered dramatically.

Lokesh sighed.

“Same college behavior.”

“Same face also.”

That made him laugh softly before following.

---

Karthik watched them go, slightly confused.

Then turned toward Shruthi.

“They’re… very comfortable with each other.”

Shruthi looked toward them briefly.

“All three of us were close in college.”

“All three?”

“Hm.”

Karthik frowned slightly.

“You never mentioned Lokesh studied with you.”

Shruthi shrugged casually.

“Didn’t come up.”

But something about Karthik’s expression shifted now.

Recognition.

A memory connecting backward suddenly.

---

Across the room, Divya poured a small peg for Lokesh expertly.

“You still drink slowly?” she asked.

“You still force people?”

“Yes.”

She handed him the glass.

Lokesh accepted finally.

“And you?”

Divya shook her head immediately.

“Breastfeeding. My glamorous life.”

Lokesh smiled faintly.

“Reality won.”

“Reality destroyed.”

Both laughed softly.

---

Meanwhile, Karthik’s thoughts were moving quickly now.

College stories.
His sister’s old emotional outbursts years ago.
One name repeated often.

Lokesh.

Not just any Lokesh.

That Lokesh.

---

Karthik looked toward him again carefully.

Suddenly fragments connected:

Divya’s old frustration,

vague comments about college heartbreak,

how she used to call someone “too calm for his own good.”

And now—

this was him.

Shruthi’s husband.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

---

“You okay?” Shruthi asked noticing his silence.

Karthik looked back at her.

“Hm? Yeah.”

Then after a pause:

“So this is the Lokesh?”

Shruthi froze slightly.

Tiny reaction.

Still visible.

“What Lokesh?”

Karthik smiled faintly now.

“My sister used to rant sometimes long back.”

Shruthi immediately leaned back.

“Oh god.”

“So it is him.”

“She was dramatic.”

“She still is.”

That made Shruthi laugh despite herself.

But internally, something tightened slightly again.

Because suddenly the past was no longer quietly buried.

Now it sat openly inside the room with all of them.

---

A few minutes later, Shruthi and Karthik joined Divya and Lokesh near the side lounge section.

Divya immediately poured another small drink.

“No escape. Everyone drinking.”

Shruthi raised an eyebrow.

“I don’t trust your measurements.”

“You survived engineering canteen coffee. You’ll survive this.”

Karthik laughed while accepting a glass.

Lokesh leaned back in his chair quietly watching all of them.

For a brief moment, it genuinely felt like college again:

teasing,

noise,

unfinished stories,

people reconnecting through memory.

Except now everyone carried adult lives behind their smiles.

---

“Wait,” Karthik suddenly said dramatically while pointing between Lokesh and Divya.

“So akka had secret heartbreak story with this fellow?”

Divya immediately threw a tissue at him.

“Shut up.”

Lokesh almost choked laughing.

Shruthi covered her face.

“This is why nobody tells you family history.”

Karthik grinned.

“I knew it! My sister used to speak like rejected cinema heroine.”

Divya looked offended.

“I was emotionally expressive.”

“You were emotionally terrorist.”

Even Lokesh laughed properly now.

And for a few moments, the atmosphere became genuinely warm.

---

Then Shruthi suddenly checked her phone.

“Wait. Hasini.”

She immediately dialed Laila.

The call connected after two rings.

“Hello?”

“Laila, sorry… Hasini slept?”

“Hm. Fully gone. She made me watch cartoons for forty minutes before sleeping.”

Shruthi smiled softly.

“Sorry da.”

“Please. She’s easy.”

In the background, Shah Rukh’s voice faintly appeared:

“Ask them to enjoy peacefully. Child is safe here.”

Laila laughed lightly.

“You heard the official announcement.”

Shruthi relaxed visibly.

“We’ll come little late.”

“No problem. Come safely.”

After cutting the call, Shruthi leaned back again.

“Everything okay?” Lokesh asked.

“Hm. Hasini slept.”

Divya immediately smirked.

“Excellent. Responsible parents can now continue drinking.”

Lokesh shook his head.

“You never matured.”

Divya raised her glass dramatically.

“Wrong. I evolved.”

And somewhere beneath the laughter, teasing, and old familiarity…

new emotional tensions quietly continued growing between all of them— soft enough to ignore, dangerous enough not to.

Chapter 16 — Truth, Dare & Old Tension

The rain outside had become softer now.

Inside the nearly empty banquet hall lounge, the four of them sat around a small circular table cluttered with:

half-finished snacks,

melting ice,

two nearly empty bottles,

and years of history none of them fully acknowledged aloud.

Divya leaned back dramatically in her chair.

“Okay,” she announced. “This party officially became boring.”

Karthik immediately pointed at her.

“You are the chaos.”

“Correct.”

Lokesh shook his head faintly while sipping slowly.

Shruthi sat quieter than the others, watching them all with tired amusement.

It had been a long time since she had laughed this much continuously.

A dangerous realization.

---

Then Divya’s eyes suddenly lit up.

“Oh no.”

Shruthi immediately reacted.

“That face means trouble.”

“Truth or dare.”

Karthik burst out laughing instantly.

“We are not in college anymore!”

“Exactly why it’ll be interesting now.”

Lokesh sighed deeply.

“I already regret staying late.”

Divya ignored him completely.

“Rules simple. No escaping. No fake answers. Penalty for refusal.”

“What penalty?” Shruthi asked cautiously.

Divya grinned slowly.

“One full large peg.”

Karthik immediately raised his hands.

“I am already dead.”

---

A few minutes later, the game had officially begun.

The atmosphere shifted strangely after that.

Still playful.

Still friendly.

But something underneath had sharpened.

Like everyone suddenly became aware of things they normally kept hidden behind polite adulthood.

---

Divya spun a spoon dramatically on the table.

It stopped at Lokesh.

“Excellent,” she declared. “Truth or dare?”

Lokesh looked tired already.

“Truth.”

“Coward.”

“Correct.”

Divya leaned forward.

“Okay… during college, who did you first find attractive?”

Silence.

Immediate laughter from Karthik.

Shruthi looked away toward her glass instantly.

Lokesh rubbed his forehead.

“This is why adults shouldn’t play this game.”

“Answer.”

Divya’s smile remained playful.

But her eyes weren’t entirely joking.

---

Lokesh finally sighed.

“Shruthi.”

Karthik whistled dramatically.

“Straight answer!”

Divya raised her eyebrows slowly while smiling.

“Fast answer too.”

Shruthi immediately took a sip from her drink to avoid reacting.

But internally, warmth and discomfort arrived together.

---

“Next,” Divya announced immediately.

The spoon spun again.

This time toward Shruthi.

Karthik leaned back excitedly.

“This is cinema now.”

Shruthi narrowed her eyes.

“I already hate this.”

“Truth or dare?”

“Truth.”

Divya smirked.

“Boring couple.”

Then after a pause:

“Have you ever enjoyed attention from someone other than your husband after marriage?”

Silence.

A very different silence this time.

Even the rain outside suddenly felt louder.

---

Shruthi looked at Divya carefully.

Divya smiled innocently while sipping juice.

Karthik suddenly became very interested in the table surface.

Lokesh remained calm externally.

Too calm.

---

Finally Shruthi answered carefully.

“Attention feels nice to anyone.”

Not direct.

Not denial either.

---

Divya immediately pointed dramatically.

“Diplomatic answer! Corporate training!”

Karthik laughed loudly, breaking the tension.

“Actually true.”

But Lokesh quietly glanced once toward Shruthi.

Small glance.

Still noticed.

---

Next spin.

Karthik.

Divya clapped happily.

“Oh this fellow definitely giving entertainment.”

“Please spare me.”

“Truth or dare?”

“Dare.”

“Wrong confidence.”

She thought dramatically for a few seconds.

Then grinned.

“Okay. Message the last person you texted and say: ‘You are becoming dangerous for me.’”

Karthik froze.

Shruthi nearly laughed instantly.

“Who’s the last person?”

Karthik checked his phone.

Then immediately covered the screen.

“No.”

Divya screamed dramatically.

“Penalty!”

Lokesh smirked faintly now for the first time.

“One full peg.”

Karthik sighed like tragic hero.

“You people are toxic.”

---

As the game continued, alcohol slowly softened everyone’s careful boundaries.

Not recklessly.

Just enough for honesty to slip out more easily.

---

At one point, Shruthi finally looked at Divya suspiciously.

“You’re asking very targeted questions.”

Divya smiled sweetly.

“I am emotionally intelligent.”

“You are emotionally dangerous.”

“Also true.”

Lokesh quietly laughed into his drink.

And Divya noticed immediately.

That laugh.

That exact calm restrained laugh.

Years later, it still affected her slightly.

Annoying.

---

Another spin.

Lokesh again.

Karthik immediately leaned forward.

“Now my turn to ask.”

Lokesh sighed.

“This is revenge.”

“Yes.”

Karthik grinned.

“Have you ever been jealous in marriage?”

Lokesh paused this time longer than expected.

The atmosphere shifted subtly again.

---

Shruthi looked up slowly.

Divya observed both carefully.

Rain tapped softly against glass windows.

---

Finally Lokesh answered quietly:

“Yes.”

No elaboration.

Just yes.

---

Karthik blinked.

“Really?”

Lokesh nodded once while swirling the drink lightly.

“Everyone gets jealous sometimes.”

And though he said it casually—

Shruthi suddenly remembered:

Laila,

corridor conversations,

Karthik,

emotional distance,

recent silences.

The answer stayed with her longer than anyone realized.

---

Divya noticed the shift immediately.

Of course she did.

She always noticed emotional cracks faster than others.

And somewhere deep inside her, an old unresolved bitterness quietly stirred again.

Not because she wanted Lokesh anymore.

But because seeing him and Shruthi together— still emotionally connected despite everything—

continued irritating parts of her she thought adulthood had healed.

---

The final round became softer.

Less provocative.

More personal.

Questions about:

regrets,

old dreams,

college memories,

people they used to be.

And slowly, without realizing it fully, the four of them stopped behaving like adults carefully protecting themselves.

For one late rainy night—

they became old versions of themselves again:

vulnerable,

teasing,

emotionally reckless,

dangerously honest.

And somewhere in between laughter and half-serious truths…

new misunderstandings quietly began taking shape once more.

Chapter 17:The Confrontation: Shruthi and Lokesh

Things took a darker in few hours time.

Shruthi’s heart pounds against her ribs.

She steps out of the guest room, her hair damp, wearing the clothes Divya had lent her. Her eyes lock onto Lokesh, who is standing just outside the door frame, looking slightly dazed and holding an empty glass.

"What were you doing?" Shruthi demands, her voice a sharp, trembling whisper so she doesn't wake the kids.

"Were you just peeking in on me?"

Lokesh, his brain slowed down by the alcohol, blinks in confusion. "What? No, Shruthi, I was just coming to use the washroom next door.

I didn't—"
"I heard the door, Lokesh! Don't lie to me," she snaps, her face flushed with a mix of anger and vulnerability.

The Silent Culprit: Karthik's Mind Game

A few feet away on the living room couch, Karthik lies perfectly still, his eyes closed, feigning a deep, alcohol-induced slumber.

But underneath the facade, his mind is racing. The alcohol has stripped away his usual restraint, replaced by a reckless, mischievous thrill.

Hearing Shruthi blame Lokesh brings a dark, quiet amusement to his chest. He realizes he has accidental immunity.

As long as he plays dead asleep, Lokesh takes the fall. Karthik decides to lean into the chaos; he lets out a heavy, exaggerated snore, subtly shifting his position to make his "sleep" look even more convincing, all while listening intently to every word.

The Interruption: Divya Steps In

Before the argument between Shruthi and Lokesh can escalate into a full-blown shouting match, the door to the master bedroom clicks open.

Divya steps out into the hallway, a look of fierce protectiveness and exhaustion on her face. She had been trying to get her children to sleep, but the sharp whispers caught her attention.

"What is going on out here?" Divya whispers harshly, stepping between Shruthi and Lokesh.

"I told you guys to sleep. Ganesh is going to be back first thing in the morning, and the kids are finally asleep. Why are you two fighting?"

"Divya, he was looking at me in the bathroom," Shruthi says, her voice cracking as she points a finger at Lokesh.

"I swear on my life, Divya, I just walked down the hall!" Lokesh pleads, raising his hands in defense. "I didn't open any doors!"

Divya looks between the two of them, her eyes then darting over to Karthik, who is seemingly dead to the world on the couch.

The atmosphere in the house has completely changed, charged with distrust, and morning is still hours away.

Chapter 18:A Marriage in the Balance

Shruthi stares at Lokesh, her eyes stinging with tears of anger and humiliation.

"Lokesh, we are in Divya's house! Why would you sneak up on the door like that? If you wanted to come in, why didn't you just say something instead of clicking the lock and running away?"

Lokesh looks completely blindsided. "Shruthi, what are you talking about? I'm your husband!

Why would I sneak around to look at you?

I was literally just walking to the kitchen to get a glass of water. I didn't touch the guest room door!"

"I heard the door, Lokesh!" Shruthi whispers fiercely, her voice trembling. "Don't play dumb with me right now."

Karthik’s Twisted Advantage

Over on the couch, Karthik’s heart is hammering against his ribs, but not entirely out of fear. A dark, reckless thrill washes over him.

He realizes the gravity of what he’s done: he didn't just spy on a friend; he just drove a massive wedge between a married couple.

If he confesses now, he ruins his friendship with Lokesh, destroys his standing with Divya, and faces total disgrace.

But seeing Lokesh take the blame gives him a malicious sense of control.

He buries his face deeper into the couch cushion, letting out another heavy, fake snore, secretly relishing the fact that he holds a secret that could blow the whole room apart.

Divya’s Growing Suspicion

Divya steps into the middle of the hallway, looking between the married couple. As a close friend, she knows their dynamics, and something about this situation feels entirely wrong.

"Okay, both of you quiet down," Divya commands in a low, sharp whisper, glancing toward her kids' room.

She looks at Lokesh’s genuinely confused face, and then at Shruthi’s sheer panic.

Divya's eyes then slowly drift over to the living room. She looks at Karthik, who is supposedly passed out cold.

Divya knows how much liquor Karthik drank, but she also knows he wasn't that far gone just twenty minutes ago.

A sudden, uneasy suspicion creeps into her mind.
"Shruthi,"

Divya says softly, putting a hand on her friend's shoulder while keeping her eyes fixed on the couch. "Are you absolutely sure it was Lokesh at the door?"

Chapter 19: The fight boils over

The house feels suffocatingly small as the confrontation reaches a boiling point. The soft, rhythmic ticking of the wall clock is the only steady thing left in the room.

"Of course I'm sure it was Lokesh!"

Shruthi says, her voice cracking with a mix of betrayal and embarrassment. She turns on her husband, her face flushed.

"Who else would it be? Karthik is dead to the world on the couch! Lokesh, you’ve had too much to drink and you're acting completely bizarre. Just admit you did it!"

Lokesh’s patience snaps. The accusation from his own wife, especially in front of Divya, cuts deep. "Admission? Admit what, Shruthi?! That I walked down a hallway?

You are paranoid and drunk! I’ve been sitting at the dining table trying to clear my head, and I walk out to find my wife treating me like a criminal. I didn't touch that door!"

"Don't call me paranoid!" Shruthi gasps, stepping closer to him, her fists clenched. "I know what I heard!

The door clicked, and the second I opened it, *you* were the one standing right there. You think this is a joke?"

"I am not joking!" Lokesh whispers fiercely, matching her intensity. "If I wanted to see you, I’m your husband, Shruthi! Why would I play a stealth game in Divya’s house? You're humiliating me for no reason!"

Divya's Trap

As the couple continues to trade bitter whispers, Divya backs away slowly. Her eyes never leave Karthik. Something about the stiffness of his posture on the couch doesn't sit right with her. A truly passed-out drunk doesn't hold their breath when a married couple is screaming three feet away.

Divya walks into the kitchen and intentionally grabs a heavy stainless-steel tumbler from the counter. She walks back into the living room, standing right beside the couch where Karthik is lying.

With a deliberate, sharp movement, she drops the tumbler onto the hardwood floor right next to his head. *CLANG.* It makes a deafening, metallic racket in the quiet house.

Lokesh and Shruthi instantly freeze and look over.

On the couch, Karthik doesn't flinch. His eyes remain shut, and his breathing stays heavy and rhythmic. It’s an Oscar-worthy performance—except for one crucial mistake. Divya notices that the moment the cup hit the floor, the pulse in Karthik’s neck violently spiked, and his knuckles tightened against the fabric of the couch cushion.

He didn't wake up because he was already awake. He was faking.

The Realization

Divya stands over him, her arms crossed, her expression turning from exhaustion to cold fury. She realizes exactly what happened. Karthik wasn't an innocent bystander; he was the one who caused this whole mess, and he was letting Lokesh take the fall for it.

She looks up from the couch and meets Shruthi’s eyes.
"Shruthi," Divya says, her voice dangerously calm and quiet. "Lokesh didn't open that door. And Karthik isn't asleep."

The room goes dead silent. On the couch, Karthik’s heart stops. He knows he's been caught.
