Dieses Buch gliedert sich in zwei Hauptteile. Je nach dem Erkenntnis-

logischen Befunden und den schriftlichen Quellen beginnen (Teil A). Wer
das Studium des Buches mit der historischen Synthese beginnen möch-
te - sit venia verbo - mit dem Ertrag, den ich aus den in Teil A dar-
gelegten Forschungen ziehe, der mag sogleich mit der Lektüre der
Darstellung Das griechische, hellenistische und kaiserzeitliche Ilion als Er-
innerungsort an die mythische Zeit einsetzen (Teil B).
Die vorliegende Monographie stellt die umgearbeitete Fassung mei-
ner Habilitationsschrift dar, die im April 1993 unter dem Titel «Eine
Stadt als Zeugnis ihrer Geschichte. Troia/Ilion in griechischer und in
hellenistisch-römischer Zeit» an der Philosophischen Fakultät der Uni-
versität zu Köln eingereicht wurde. Sie widmet sich der Bedeutung von
Bauresten und Objekten sowie von Geländemarken in Troia und seiner
Umgebung, die in der heidnischen Antike als Zeugnisse und Schau-
plätze von Geschehnissen der als historisch angesehenen heroischen
Vergangenheit, insbesondere des Troianischen Krieges, galten, d. h., sie
untersucht das griechische, hellenistische und römische Ilion einschließ-
lich der Troas unter dem Gesichtspunkt, inwieweit sie Erinnerungsorte
eines Mythos sind.
Die Behandlung der Thematik beruht auf schon vor längerem in
Angriff genommenen Forschungen, zu denen auch ein Besuch Troias
während der Zeit meines Reisestipendiums im Jahre 1979 gehörte. Sie
wurden durch eine zehntägige Besichtigung des Ruinengeländes, d. h.
des Areals der prähistorischen Burg und der hellenistisch-römischen
Unterstadt, aber auch der Troas im Jahre 1987 und durch die Teilnahme
an den aktuellen, von M. Korfmann geleiteten Grabungen während der
Kampagnen 1989-1991 intensiviert. Weitere Besuche folgten in den Sep-
tembermonaten der Jahre 1997-2000.
Die Anfertigung der Habilitationsschrift wurde mir durch ein zwei-
jähriges Habilitandenstipendium der DFG und jene finanziellen Mittel
ermöglicht, die 1991 im Zuge der Verleihung des Bennigsen-Foerder-
Preises des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen zur Verfügung gestellt wur-
den. Weitere Förderung erfuhr die Arbeit durch das von mir seit 1994
im Rahmen des Schwerpunktprogrammes der DFG «Historische
Grundlagenforschung im antiken Kleinasien» durchgeführte For-
schungsprojekt «Untersuchungen zur Geschichte der Aiolis in der
Bronze- und in griechisch-römischer Zeit», das auch von der Zentrale
des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts und vom Museum für Vor-
und Frühgeschichte in Berlin unterstützt wurde.
Die Umarbeitung des ursprünglichen Manuskriptes konnte erst sehr
spät erfolgen, da ein schwerer Krankheitsfall in meiner Familie jahre-
lang meinen ganzen Einsatz verlangte. Allerdings ist diese Verzögerung
auch der Fundierung der in der Arbeit vorgelegten Ergebnisse zugute
gekommen und hat außerdem die Möglichkeit geboten, die Ergebnisse
der neueren Grabungen bis zur Kampagne 2001 einschließlich (2002
publiziert) zu berücksichtigen.
Eine unabdingbare Voraussetzung für die Durchführung des Vor-
habens stellten die Tagebuchnotizen Dörpfelds (häufig durch unver-
öffentlichte Zeichnungen untermauert) und Biegens, aber auch das
Fotoarchiv der Grabungen Dörpfelds im Deutschen Archäologischen
Institut, Abteilung Athen, dar, das ca. 600 häufig vorzügliche Aufnah-
men von Bauresten, Schichten und Fundstücken aller Siedlungsphasen
Troias, darunter auch zahlreiche von nur unzureichend ausgewerteten
der sog. Schichten Troia VII-IX umfaßt. Da eine Reihe wichtiger Bau-
reste sowie alle Schichten abgetragen wurden und manches Fundstück
verlorengegangen ist, bilden die Aufnahmen ein überaus ergiebiges
Quellenmaterial für die Erschließung der materiellen Überreste Troias.
Erfreulicherweise konnte in der vorliegenden Untersuchung eine grö-
ßere Zahl nicht publizierter Fotos abgebildet und in Dörpfelds Gra-
bungspublikation wiedergegebene in besserer Qualität reproduziert
werden.
Ohne die nachhaltige Hilfe vieler Kollegen wären meine Forschun-
gen und ihre Darlegung (sowie damit in Zusammenhang stehende Ar-
beiten) nicht möglich gewesen. Mein Dank gilt daher den Gutachtern
des erwähnten Schwerpunktprogrammes der DFG, vor allem H.-J.
Gehrke und V. von Graeve, dem Präsidenten des Deutschen Archäo-
logischen Instituts, H. Kyrieleis und seiner Referentin Dr. A. Krug, den
beiden zuletzt genannten u. a. für die Zurverfügungstellung der Tage-
bücher W. Dörpfelds und des Nachlasses von A. Brückner sowie für
das Recht, Angaben und Abbildungen dieser Dokumentationen veröf-
