I was married five years ago. It was an arranged marriage, and if I’m being honest, I wasn't happy about it at all. The shadow of my first girlfriend, Kusum, still loomed over me—she had shattered our five-year relationship in a single, sudden stroke. I hadn't even begun to heal when my family picked a girl for me and forced the union, ignoring my every protest.
I was consumed by misery and a burning resentment toward my family. For a moment, I considered walking away from it all—just running away—but I lacked the nerve. Then, a cynical plan took root: if I treated this woman they had forced upon me with enough coldness, she would eventually leave of her own accord. It was a cruel strategy, but in my state of mind, it felt like my only escape.
On our wedding night, I didn't even glance at my new bride's face. I walked past her without a word and collapsed onto the sofa to sleep.
When I woke the next morning, the room was empty. A surge of relief washed over me; I assumed that my blatant coldness on our first night had driven her back to her parents. I was so overcome with joy that I actually started to dance in the middle of the room.
But as I spun around, my heart stopped. The ground seemed to vanish beneath my feet. Standing by the bathroom was a breathtakingly beautiful girl dbangd in a sheer red saree, watching me with a laugh in her eyes. This girl was my wife, Shreya.
