Adultery The Husband’s Doubt [Completed]
Chapter 37 –  The Old Car and Newness

The old Swift coughed and sputtered on the busy Chennai road — 2 lakh plus kilometres on the odometer, a second-hand warrior that had served faithfully for years through rain, heat, and endless traffic.

Now it was showing its age — engine whining, vibrations rattling the dashboard.

Engine died mid-way — sudden silence in the middle of a crowded intersection, horns blaring around him.
Prem cursed under his breath — low, frustrated, the afternoon heat pressing in through the windows like a heavy blanket.

He had to reach the bank — deposit a cheque from a new client.
Important.
Immediate.

The money would cover next month's payroll — salaries, rent, everything riding on it.
He tried restarting — key turning, nothing.

Called mechanics — signal weak in the jam, calls dropping.

With the aid of a few kind strangers on the road — two young men in office shirts pausing their bikes, a passing auto driver with strong arms — they pushed the car to the side, tyres scbanging asphalt, sweat beading on everyone's foreheads.
Waited for auto.
None came empty.

Called taxi apps — surge pricing, cancellations piling up, "no drivers available."

Luck turned — a town bus, crowded and rattling, not at a stop, slowed anyway.

Driver waved him in — sympathetic nod to the stranded man in formal shirt.
Crowded inside.
Standing room only.

Bodies pressed close, the smell of sweat, diesel, and packed lunches.
He clutched the overhead rail, swaying with the turns, briefcase bumping his leg with every brake.
A man stood as his stop neared — older gentleman, newspaper folded under arm.

Lucky again — Prem took the seat gratefully, sinking into it with a quiet sigh.
The person beside him turned — familiar face, older but unmistakable.

“Hey… Prem?”
Prem looked closer.

Recognition hit — slow, then sharp like a flash.

“Dei Nithin ! How are you? What a surprise!”

Nithin grinned — same old college friend smile, teeth white, eyes crinkling with genuine joy.
“I’m good, da! How are you?”

Prem: “Good, good. We met long back — collegeing days. Then different colleges.”
Nithin : “Small world!”

They laughed — genuine, easy, the years falling away for a moment like they were teenagers again on the playground.
Nithin : “Married?”

Prem: “Yes. Kid — 8 years old.”

Nithin surprised, eyebrows shooting up. “What? 8 years? I just got married, man — 31 now. You guys early, huh?”

Prem chuckled, a little proud, a little nostalgic. “Loved a woman. Eloped.”

They laughed again — louder, heads together like old times, sharing the story in quick bursts.
Nithin : “What are you doing?”

Prem: “Self business .” (Prem did not want to show it as IT outsourcing firm he doesn't want people to flood him asking for opportunities)

“You?”

Nithin : Dont ask me Prem. Did my engineering but now a Marketing guy,. Pitching products. Want solid profile — Python, tech side.” Even now i went for a Tech interview. Hope they call me soon.

Prem thought — mind ticking with opportunity.
“Send me your work.”

Nithin : Why are you referring me to any company? But i have no IT experience, only Marketing” But i have deep knowledge in languages like Python.. Etc. but people don't value it… they just ask for experience.

Prem: “Fine. If you know the knowledge, try.”
Nithin began to say something
Then — Prakash’s phone rang.

Screen lit: Vaani Darling
Prakash cut it quickly — embarrassed thumb swipe, cheeks coloring slightly.

“Irony — my wife did MBA, she has no job yet. But I'm into marketing… Once I settle, she’ll look.”

Prem: “Is it?”

They talked more — easy flow, catching up on mutual friends, old teachers, life twists.
Realized the same stop approaching.

Nithin accompanied the bank — “I’m going that way anyway.”
Helped the mechanic too — haggling price together, laughing at the owner's excuses, fixing the old Swift.

Shared numbers — promise to meet soon. Departed with a wave, “Keep in touch, da.”

The car is running smoothly now.
Prem near Nivi’s office. Decided — drop in, see her.
Surprise.

It was the exact time Rohan had entered the office, and Nivi was glowing with a smile at him — genuine, wide, the kind that lit her eyes and softened her features in a way Prem hadn't seen in weeks.

Rohan leaned casually against her desk, voice low but warm.
“Sorry I left you with hectic work.. Very sorry.”

Nivi shook her head, smile lingering. “All fine at your end?”

Rohan nodded. “Yes, it went well.. Hope you are back on your feet.”

Nivi tilted her head slightly. “You went for an emergency or…?”

Rohan paused, eyes meeting hers — steady, meaningful.

“I wanted to give you space.. No words can fix you.. No consolation can fix you. I want you to recover.. Yourself.."
He leaned in a fraction, voice softer.

"So the first step — the trouble maker should move out.. I'm the trouble maker here.."
Nivi's eyes widened slightly.

"And second — if I leave hectic work to you.. The work warrants your attention, and you will gradually get hooked into bigger things that would make you ignore the small ones.."

Nivi looked at him — really looked, warmth spreading.
“You are not a trouble maker..… I’m sorry.”

But thanks.

Rohan: “For what?”
Nivi: “For understanding and giving me space..”

Rohan glanced around subtly — open office, voices nearby.
“I want to speak with you more, but walls have ears. Maybe somewhere away..”
Nivi: “Okay...”

I'm happy anyway — happy to see you again.

Her smile widened — bright, unguarded, cheeks flushing lightly.
Prem entered the building just then.

Approached Nivi’s cabin — footsteps quiet on the carpeted floor.
Saw Rohan already there — leaning on desk, talking animatedly with Nivi.
When did he come back?

Mind puzzled — two weeks no noise, no mention.. sudden return?
Nivi smiling wide — warmer, brighter for Rohan.

Laughing softly at something he said — head tilted, eyes sparkling.
For him — he had been courting her for weeks, apologizing for his misunderstandings, trying to win back trust.
But she never smiled this much, this freely, when he finally surrendered to her.

Yet for Rohan — effortless glow.
Something not adding up.

When Prem doubted her intentions... there is nothing concrete to actually doubt her.
Now when he wanted to trust her and show his blind support.. she giving too many reasons too make him doubt..

Instantly his mind feared.. No Prem dont overthink and spoil it.. if Nivi found out you still doubting her— the gap would widen forever.

Irreversible.

He stood still 10 seconds outside the glass door — reeling, heart thumping hard in chest, palms suddenly damp.

Old insecurities flooding back — sharp, familiar poison.

Then entered — forced smile plastered on, voice steady as he could manage.
Rohan saw first — sharp eyes catching the movement.

“Hey buddy! How are you? Just came back — entered the office. Sorry, put her in trouble.”
Nivi smiled — inhibitions gone, back on feet, glowing with energy.

Prem’s insecurities — back too, sharper than before, cutting deeper.
Rohan sensed the flicker in Prem's eyes.

Did he hear what I said? to Nivi?  Those were cryptic, right? He asked himself silently.
Decided quietly — whatever, let's bring him back to the trust zone.

Fast.
Faster.

Chapter 38 – The Gift

Prem’s shirt — wrinkled, smudged with grease and dirt from pushing the Swift, dark streaks across the fabric like battle marks.

Rohan noticed first.

“What happened to your shirt? It’s full of dirt.”

Prem laughed — embarrassed, wiping at a stubborn stain with his palm, only smearing it more.
“My car broke down. Turned self-mechanic for a bit — didn’t work. So… this is the result.”
Rohan raised an eyebrow, slipping into concerned friend mode effortlessly.
“All fine?”

Prem nodded, still chuckling self-deprecatingly. “Yes. Came by car after mechanic fixed it.”

Rohan smiled — easy, reassuring.

“I just came directly here — important files. Will see you both tonight at home.”
He picked up his bag.

Walked out — stride confident, purposeful.
After he was gone.

Nivi saw how Prem was looking at her.
Something new.
Intense.

Searching — eyes lingering, trying to read her face.
She realised — her overreaction when Rohan was in.
The glow.
The smile.
Too warm.
Too quick.

She continued the same mood — forced calm, professional smile.
“What’s on my face?”

Prem shook his head, forcing lightness.
“Nothing… I just came to see you.”

Nivi: “Okay. Wait here two more hours. Let me wrap up — I’ll come with you in car. No need to book cabs, na?”
He said okay — relieved, smile genuine.
Sat in the visitor chair.

Watched her work — quiet, content for now.
Nivi tried — kept warm before Prem.

Smiled when he spoke.
Asked about Aara — light questions, normal chatter.
But inside — storm raging.

He saw. The way I lit up for Rohan. The difference.

That night.

Rohan came late — Nivi and Prem already asleep.
Didn’t see him.

Next morning.

Rohan took Nivi in his Mercedes.
Prem in his old Swift — following behind.

On the way — city traffic slow, giving space for talk.
Rohan asked, casual, eyes on road.
“Did you and Prem reconcile?”

Nivi: “Yes… almost there.”

Rohan: “Physically?”

Nivi quiet — fingers twisting in lap.

“Not yet… but I kissed him.”

Rohan nodded — neutral.

“He seems changed. Why don’t you honor his feelings?”

Nivi: “I’m doing.”

Rohan: “It’s an issue with women… when they chase you, you distance. When you chase them, they seem unavailable.”

“Fuck, I don’t know what kind of relationship this is. Half the couples have this issue… and some of them loved each other once.”
She: “I’m not distancing. I love him back. We’re good.”

Rohan: “I don’t think so. His eyes still have that insecurity.”
Nivi panicked slightly — voice rising.

“How do you say that? Did he suspect anything?”
Rohan calm — reassuring.

“No. It’s because you’re not showing him enough love.”
“I sensed a different reaction from you when you’re with me now… and when I left you two weeks back.”

“I don’t think you ever do that way to him. Am I correct?”

Nivi: “Maybe… I don’t know. I just got happy seeing you back. Thought I pushed you to guilt or something. I know you’re a good guy.”
Rohan: “No, no — just wait. Don’t mix your marital love life with this.”

“Give him the love he wants. Fix there. Then come to me.”

Nivi’s eyes on him — few minutes, processing.

Is he asking me to love Prem… and come back to him for sex? Direct?
Rohan saw her eyes — confusion, question.

“I’m just telling… we longed for one perfect marriage. One among us got the chance — don’t spoil it. Fix it. Treat the friendship next. Nothing else.”
Nivi felt relief — then doubt.
Then after a minute.

“I’m already giving the love he wants. How could I show more?”
“And you know… physical need is one. But I’m not mentally ready yet after our Bangalore night…”

Rohan smiled — understanding.

“There are other ways. Other needs. If you notice and respond — he might realise and ignore other shortcomings.”

Nivi: “How could I know his need? Except the bed sex he’s asking for…”

Rohan: “You need to observe him. Watch him.”
“Nivi… you’re a bad wife.”

Nivi laughed — surprised. “Stop mocking.”
Rohan serious.

“Yes, I’m serious. You didn’t know your husband’s needs…”

Her face went small — thoughtful, a little hurt.

Rohan continued.

“Think if he needs anything to be cared for… and not yet got one.”
Nivi clueless — mind racing.

Rohan himself.

“Your husband had old car. You’re earning better, right? You can afford him a car. Book one.”

Nivi: “What?”

Rohan: “Yeah. Men don’t often tell what they need — want to save better for their loved one. Most men like that.”
“Just try this. Book a car. Gift him ultra-modern, new, branded.”

“Tell him — saw you dirty because of old car. Now we have money, booked it.”
Nivi: “This should work thanks.”

He: “What cars does he like?”
Nivi thought — memory flickering.

“Nothing particular… but he used to rave about Kia.”
Rohan: “Okay then — let’s go there?”

Nivi: “Now?”
Rohan: “Better time.”

They went.
Booked.

Rohan used influence — in-stock vehicle ready for delivery.
Kia Seltos — favorite color, top variant.

Nivi: “He’ll be happy. Should we text?”

Rohan: “Keep surprise. Go to his office tomorrow — ask him come out. Hand key.”
Nivi: “You should give — your idea.”

Rohan knocked her head lightly — playful.

“Don’t involve me. It’s your love. You giving for love.”

Nivi bit lip — eyes soft.
“How naive I am…”

They laughed — shared, light.
As per plan.

Surprise unveiled next day.

Nivi closed Prems eye with her hand and guide him to parking lot of the office.

Prem keep asking where are you taking me what is it?

Nivi said surprise for you .. For my love..

As they reached parking lot she released her hand.. from closing his eyes..

Prem saw a Kia Seltos brand new unregistered  standing like a giant closer his to old swift car..

Whats this Nivi??

Nivi -- From now its yours.. take this.. she gave him the key.

What Prem Overjoyed.!!!!!

Prem walked around the car slowly — almost reverently — hand trailing over the sleek body, fingers tracing the curves, the chrome accents catching sunlight.

He opened the door — inhaled the new-car smell, leather seats pristine.

Sat inside — gripped the steering wheel, turned it playfully, dashboard lights glowing as he started the engine.
The smooth hum — no rattle, no cough.

He looked all around — rearview mirror, sunroof, infotainment screen.

Touched everything — buttons, gears, like a child with a new toy.

Eyes shining — pure happiness, boyish grin spreading.

"This... this is mine?"

Nivi watching — truly enjoying his happiness, heart swelling at the sight.
His joy infectious.

The way he laughed — loud, free.

Revved the engine gently — sound powerful, satisfying.

Leaned back in seat — closed eyes a moment, smiling.

"Thank you, Nivi... really."

She leaned in window — kissed his cheek.

Seeing him like this — untouched delight — made the guilt quieter for a moment.
Worth it.

Prem fell for it.

Nivi super happy and excited seeing his happiness — genuine, warm.
Deep — thanked Rohan silently.

Prem: “How you got the plan?”

She: “Couldn’t see you struggle with old Swift. So this plan.”

Prem surprised — one day delivery? Eyes wide, mouth open in genuine shock as he stared at the gleaming new Kia Seltos parked in the office lot, keys dangling from Nivi's hand.

"How... one day? These take months on waiting list!"

He asked, voice high with excitement and disbelief: “Did Rohan help?”

Nivi knew — if she said no, doubt would creep in.

If yes — too much reliance?

But truth safe.
“Yes… I told him I wanted to gift you a car. Asked his help to reach sooner.”

She panicked quietly — heart racing, watching his face for flicker.

Will he mind? Suspect?

I love your writing . How are you doing this ? I have read like 10+ chapters in one sitting , so smooth.

The pacing is too good .

I like your approach short chapters , perfectly divide, Fast update .  Mast

The eroticism is the best part of the story .

Last updates were the best .

Poor PREM . The dilemma he is having . Either trust his instinct vs  Trust his Wife . In both situation He is a loser . I wanna see how  is he gonna handle the situation .

But again , Kudos to you . The story is very engaging .

congrats

Yes , Rohan's wife . Given she is also a first hand victim of her husband Infidelity  , She could become an important character .

Interesting Suggestion .
