Description
This course offers a rigorous, clinically informed exploration of the nervous system-its cellular foundations, anatomical architecture, functional circuits, and the ways these systems give rise to sensation, movement, cognition, and homeostasis. Designed for learners across medicine, psychology, biology, and allied health, the course translates complex neurobiology into clear, actionable understanding while maintaining scientific precision and clinical relevance. You'll begin with the core building blocks of the nervous system-neurons, glia, and progenitor cells-learning how their properties, signaling mechanisms, and developmental trajectories shape everything the brain and spinal cord accomplish. You'll then examine the embryologic development of the nervous system: neural tube formation, vesicle differentiation, telencephalic expansion, and the creation of ventricles and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. These foundational modules establish a strong mental model for understanding congenital anomalies, neurodevelopmental disorders, and structural-functional relationships throughout life. From there, the course moves into regional anatomy and systems. You'll map the spinal cord's long pathways and segmental organization, learn how cranial nerves anchor sensory and motor functions in the head and neck, and develop fluency with the brainstem's life-sustaining roles and clinical signs of damage. The forebrain modules synthesize the hypothalamus (homeostasis), limbic system and amygdala (emotion and salience), basal ganglia (action selection and habit), thalamus (relay and integration), hippocampus (memory and intelligence), and the cerebral cortex (mapping and higher-order processing). These sections draw a throughline from anatomy to function to clinical syndromes-turning names and nuclei into practical, memorable knowledge. You will then dive into the vascular and trauma landscape-oxygen and blood supply, stroke mechanisms and syndromes, dural compartments, traumatic brain injury, and intracranial bleeds. This equips you with a clinically relevant understanding of how disruption to perfusion and structure alters function, helping you connect imaging findings and bedside signs to underlying pathophysiology. The course devotes extensive attention to sensory systems. You'll study perception from first principles-pathways, coding, and modalities-then zoom into the visual system: phototransduction, rods and cones, visual fields, development of visual acuity, attentional modulation, and non-perceptual visual functions (such as circadian entrainment). The auditory and language sections traverse the outer, middle, and inner ear, cochlear mechanics, otoacoustic emissions, hair cell synapses, hearing loss and its tests, cochlear implants, and the brain's language networks for comprehension and production. Pain and somatosensation are covered in detail-nociceptors, molecular transduction, silent nociceptors, axon reflexes-enabling you to interpret clinical pain phenomena and analgesic strategies.Balance and orientation are demystified through the vestibular system, including angular and linear acceleration encoding, vestibular hair cells, signal ambiguities, and the powerful vestibular motor reflexes that stabilize vision and posture. Building on this, the eye movement and gaze control modules teach you types of eye movements (saccades, pursuit, vergence), extraocular muscle pairs and motoneurons, midbrain and forebrain control centers, vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) modulation, and nystagmus-knowledge that links neurophysiology directly to bedside examination.Motor control spans from muscle physiology (fibers, motor units, EMG, tension generation, orderly recruitment) through spinal reflexes and locomotion (stretch reflex, alpha-gamma co-activation, Ib reflex, withdrawal and primitive reflexes, central pattern generators, gait cycles). You'll learn how posture is maintained, how corticobulbar pathways govern facial motor control, and how lesions differentiate upper versus lower motor neuron patterns, including cerebral palsy and higher cortical contributions to movement planning (praxis). The cerebellum receives a comprehensive treatment-anatomy, information flow, circuits, afferents, modulatory roles, functional loops, and the cognitive and affective impacts of cerebellar lesions-culminating in symptom recognition and clinical application. The basal ganglia modules clarify direct, indirect, and hyperdirect pathways; dopamine's roles; skeletal motor loops; chunking; and clinical interventions such as deep brain stimulation-grounding your understanding of disorders like Parkinson's, dystonia, and compulsive behaviors. Finally, the homeostasis and autonomic series synthesizes thermoregulation, baroreflexes, respiratory control, endocrine integration, micturition, enteric nervous system function, and sleep regulation-showing how the brain orchestrates internal stability in a dynamic environment. The course concludes with a patient-centered perspective, connecting neurobiological mechanisms to real-world experiences and clinical decision-making.What Makes This Course Stand OutIntegrated, systems-first pedagogy: Each topic connects cellular mechanisms to circuit behavior to clinical signs-so you remember and can apply what you learn.Clinical translation throughout: Vascular, trauma, lesion localizations, reflex tests, EMG, and bedside signs are woven into the science.Clear visuals and structured outlines: Complex anatomy and pathways are simplified with maps, diagrams, and logically sequenced lectures. From fundamentals to advanced application: Suitable for beginners while remaining valuable to clinicians and researchers seeking a cohesive refresh. How You'll LearnShort, focused lectures: Each module addresses one concept deeply and efficiently, building confidence step by step.Concept check-ins: Recurring summaries and reviews that reinforce key pathways and clinical correlations.Case-oriented examples: Realistic scenarios illustrate how neurobiology shows up in practice-vision loss patterns, nystagmus interpretation, reflex changes, movement disorders, stroke syndromes, and more.Scaffolded progression: Begin with cells and development, advance through structure and systems, and culminate in integrated function and clinical perspective.By the End of the Course, You Will Be Able ToExplain how neurons, glia, and developmental processes shape brain structure and function.Localize lesions using spinal pathways, cranial nerve signs, and brainstem/cerebellar findings.Interpret visual, auditory, vestibular, and somatosensory phenomena from first principles.Analyze motor control from muscle fiber recruitment to reflexes, gait, posture, and cortical planning.Distinguish cerebellar and basal ganglia circuit roles and predict hallmark clinical signs.Connect homeostatic and autonomic regulation to real-life physiology and patient symptoms.Communicate neurobiological concepts clearly, confidently, and clinically.Materials and videos provided under this course are on a Creative Commons (CC) License. Original work by Professor Mason has been used across the course.

The Economist Audio Edition - December 13, 2025
English | 8 h 35 m | MP3 | 224 MB
"It is not only The Economist's name that people find baffling. Here are some other common questions.
First, why does it call itself a newspaper? Even when The Economist incorporated the Bankers' Gazette and Railway Monitor from 1845 to 1932, it also described itself as "a political, literary and general newspaper".
It still does so because, in addition to offering analysis and opinion, it tries in each issue to cover the main events-business and political-of the week. It goes to press on Thursdays and, printed simultaneously in six countries, is available in most of the world's main cities the following day or soon after. Readers everywhere get the same editorial matter. The advertisements differ. The running order of the sections, and sometimes the cover, also differ. But the words are the same, except that each week readers in Britain get a few extra pages devoted to British news.
Why is it anonymous? Many hands write The Economist, but it speaks with a collective voice. Leaders are discussed, often disputed, each week in meetings that are open to all members of the editorial staff. Journalists often co-operate on articles. And some articles are heavily edited. The main reason for anonymity, however, is a belief that what is written is more important than who writes it. As Geoffrey Crowther, editor from 1938 to 1956, put it, anonymity keeps the editor "not the master but the servant of something far greater than himself. You can call that ancestor-worship if you wish, but it gives to the paper an astonishing momentum of thought and principle."

Adventures In Classical Music - Music Appreciation For All!
Last updated 9/2020
MP4 | Video: h264, 1920x1080 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz
Language: English | Size: 22.95 GB | Duration: 31h 11m
Understand and enjoy classical music at your own pace. A music history course, including a music theory introduction.
What you'll learn
You will learn the component parts of music-rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, form, etc.
Then you will apply those concepts to an exploration of the history of classical music.
In the end, you will have developed a greater understanding of music in its various stages of development
You will be able to more accurately identify the works and the composer's style, as well as place it in the timeline of the history of music.
Requirements
I don't require a textbook, but if you wish to complement your studies, the textbook that most closely parallels this course is The Art of Listening by Jean Ferris.
Description
Music appreciation for the 21st century. Learn about Classical Music in the Western world from the Middle Ages to the present. You'll begin with an introduction to the various elements of music -- for example, melody, rhythm, pitch and harmony - to give you the basics and vocabulary of music theory to understand and appreciate any type of music. You'll then explore the History of Classical Music through its various stylistic periods, from medieval chant right up to the current cutting edge. Anyone interested in classical music will benefit from this course. ______________________________________________________________________ About this course: Over 3800 happy students Updated regularly Full, free lifetime access All future extra and upgraded lectures are always included for free Unconditional Udemy 30 day money-back guarantee See testimonials from former students below ______________________________________________________________________ This course is structured in 32 sections; • the first section is devoted to the elements of music in order to give you a detailed primer in music theory: melody, rhythm, pitch, harmony, texture, tempo, dynamics and form. Section 1 includes a Short History of Rock and Roll to illustrate the musical elements and musical style. After that, each section is devoted to one of the broad eras of music history: • The Middle Ages. Learn about early music beginning with monophony and how polyphony developed during the period of the building of the great cathedrals. • The Renaissance. What was happening in music during the period in which Michelangelo was painting the Sistine Chapel? A return to some Ancient ideals led to a rediscovery of the science of acoustics, providing a basis for the theory of modern harmony. How the course of music changed as a result of Martin Luther's break from the Church. • The Baroque. Here we have the origins of opera, as well as a flowering of instrumental music, culminating in the works of Bach, Handel and Vivaldi. • The Classical. In reaction to the florid complexities of the Baroque, and influenced by the Age of Reason, the Classical period focused on simplicity and elegance, producing such composers as Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. • Romanticism. The Age of Reason was too "reasonable" for the the Romanticists. They valued heightened emotion over elegance. The music of Schumann, Chopin, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Verdi and Puccini were some of its greatest accomplishments. • The Modern Period. Formerly referred to as the 20th century period, it now needs to reflect its expansion into the 21st century. Some of the greatest composers of this period have been Stravinsky, Bartok, Schoenberg, Britten, Shostakovich, Ives, Copland and Barber. • We conclude with a retrospective and some final remarks to wrap it all up. ______________________________________________________________________ Testimonials from former students. I concurrently teach this course at Santa Rosa Junior College (for core Humanities credit). Please take a moment to read a few testimonials by Santa Rosa students about this course, as they testify to my passion and command of the subject matter. "I wanted to thank you, Bill Neely, for sharing your knowledge with us. This has been a super-duper class, and I find myself a little sad to find it drawing to a close. I've always enjoyed classical music rather passively; I now feel that I can be an active participant, with a deeper understanding of the musical concepts, the composers themselves, and their historical context. Very cool!" -Sandra L "My love for classical music has grown as I understand more now the times and styles and detours of styles these great composers took. I have found these lectures easy to understand and digest into my appreciation and education of classical music." -Kathy J "I wanted to thank you for this wonderful class. I have a doctorate degree, and this has been one of the most thorough and informative classed I have ever taken. It has deepened my understanding and enjoyment of the music I have been listening to for the past 35 years...I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the depth and clarity of presentation of this class. Do you offer any other online classes? I have recommended it to many of my friends." -Loretta Z "I really like your lectures, very informative, interesting and filled with a lot of information. This is what I hoped for in an online course. Great lectures, this is the first online class I've taken that I felt the instructor was as dedicated to his online students as his in-person ones. Thank you!" -Stephanie M "...lectures were terrific, especially the use of the history of Rock 'n' Roll to begin a very clear and concise exploration of the basics of music ...Thanks very much for teaching such an excellent course. Sincerely," -Daniel N Many more testimonials available on my musicappreciationonline dot com website.
This course is intended for the beginner, although many students with classical music history training have reported that they too have benefitted from the class.
