The Lunch
The café was a refuge of quiet, the gentle hum of conversations and the clinking of cutlery barely audible against the heavy weight of their thoughts. Sunlight filtered through the windows, casting long, golden beams across the small table where Priya Didi sat.
Her profile was sharp, composed, but Ravi could feel the quiet tension that lingered in every movement, every breath she took.
The peaceful ambiance of the café, with its warm, golden light, should have offered them both a reprieve, but instead, it felt like another battleground, silent, but charged, thick with the weight of their unspoken words.
Ravi could feel the presence of Priya Didi like a physical force, both a relief and a torment. She was here, so close, within arm's reach, yet a vast chasm seemed to stretch between them.
Every inch of her, from the delicate way her fingers rested on the table to the graceful flick of her hair behind her ear, reminded him of everything he had lost, everything he had hurt. Her presence should have been comforting, but it only served to deepen the ache in his chest.
His eyes followed her movements, each small gesture seeming to carry so much weight. The way she inhaled before speaking, the subtle parting of her lips as if every word was a calculated decision, a shield to guard the rawness inside her.
Deliberate, yes, but beneath it all, Ravi knew there was something real, something unspoken, something she couldn’t hide.
He sat across from her, his heart a tight knot in his chest. His fingers gripped the edge of his glass, the coolness of it doing nothing to ease the heat building inside him. He wanted to reach across the table, to touch her hand, to bridge the distance between them, but he knew better. The silence between them was louder than any words.
Priya Didi was still angry with him. He could feel it in the air, thick and unyielding. Her eyes, when they met his, were filled with quiet fury, a deep well of hurt and disillusionment that made his chest tighten.
He had no right to ask for her forgiveness, not yet, not until he had earned it. But still, being near her, feeling her presence, made his heart ache. There was no escaping the weight of her gaze, the weight of the years they had spent together, now crumbling into nothing but fragments of broken trust.

The waiter arrived to take their order, and Ravi tried to steady his voice, fighting to maintain control. “I’ll have the grilled fish for both of us,” he said, hoping the familiar dish would somehow break the tension, provide some small semblance of normalcy. “And lemon iced tea. It’s refreshing.” His voice faltered on the last word, and he quickly looked away, his stomach twisting.
Priya Didi’s eyes flickered briefly to him, but her lips remained pressed tight, the line of restraint never wavering. She nodded, just barely, before turning her gaze back to the menu, as if the decision was an impersonal task, a way to keep herself distant, shielded from him.
A long silence stretched between them, thick with things unsaid. Ravi could hear the faint beat of his own heart, the tightness in his chest, but nothing more. He was here with her, so close, yet still worlds apart.
He longed to reach out, to say something, anything, that would breach the gulf she had placed between them. But nothing felt right. The silence spoke louder than any words ever could.
Then, after what felt like an eternity, Priya Didi spoke, her voice soft but laced with an unmistakable edge.
“Ravi,” she said, her gaze meeting his directly, sharp and unyielding. “I don’t know what you expect from me. I can’t just forget what you did. I can’t pretend I didn’t know… everything. The betrayal, the hurt you caused.”
The words struck him like a blow to the chest, each one landing with painful precision. His breath caught in his throat, and he looked down at his hands, unable to escape the truth of her words.
They were necessary, but they were a piercing reminder of everything he had lost. His shame was overwhelming.
“I don’t expect you to forget,” Ravi said, his voice barely above a whisper, but firm with sincerity. He could feel the weight of her scrutiny, her eyes searching his every word, as if hoping for something more, something hidden behind his confession.
He wanted to give it to her. He wanted to show her everything he had felt, the regret, the guilt, the brokenness, but all he had was his truth. “I can’t expect you to forgive me, not yet. Not ever, unless I truly prove to you that I’m sorry. But… I’m here, Didi. I’m still here.”

Wow Readersp Sir
Long time. It is really wonderful to see your message here.
Thank you so much for your compliments and thoughtful feedback. I can’t tell you how much it means to me, especially after such a long time. I’m so glad that you resonated with the emotional depth of the moment between Priya Didi and Ravi.
You’re absolutely right, truth can be hard to swallow, but it’s also the first step toward healing and growth. Ravi's acknowledgment of his fault is his way of showing that he’s willing to change, and it’s a beautiful reflection of his sincerity.
I also really appreciate your point about their chemistry, it does play a big role, but as much as they share this undeniable connection, the mistake Ravi made is not a small one. From Priya’s standpoint, the weight of what has happened is significant, and that’s why it’s taking time for her to process everything and come to terms with it. The emotional journey for her is much more complicated, and forgiveness isn’t always immediate when the hurt runs deep. It’s not just about reconciling their chemistry, it’s about rebuilding trust, and that takes time.
I’ve truly missed your insightful feedback, and it’s such a pleasure to see your thoughts again after these few weeks. Your perspective always helps me grow as a writer, and I’m so grateful for it. Thank you for always taking the time to read and share your thoughts with me!
I’ll definitely keep rocking and striving to bring more genuine, complex moments to life. Your encouragement means the world, and I’m excited to keep creating for you.
With warm regards

Hi Readersp sir
Hahaha, absolutely! Of course, Priya will forgive Ravi, after all, this is their story. Their journey is full of ups and downs, and moments like this are just part of the path that will eventually bring them closer again. I have no doubt that, despite the challenges and misunderstandings, their bond is strong enough to withstand it all. So yes, in time, they’ll find their way back to each other, and the closeness they share will grow even deeper.
And having you all here, sharing your thoughts and feedback, really motivates me. It keeps me inspired and excited to continue writing their story, to explore these moments, and to bring their journey to life. Your encouragement means the world.
With warm regards

Her eyes softened, just a fraction, but there was no answer. Instead, she sat there, her fingers drumming lightly on the edge of her cup, her gaze flitting over the room, distracted, almost as if avoiding him.
But Ravi could see the tension in her body, the way her chest rose and fell with every breath. She was holding back, something fragile, something painful, and he didn’t know if it was the ache of his betrayal or the remnants of the love they had shared.
Another long pause. The silence was now its own living thing, thick with the weight of everything that had happened between them. Finally, Priya Didi spoke again, her voice barely audible but thick with emotion.
“I don’t need your apologies, Ravi,” she said, her words cutting through the silence like a blade. “I don’t want them. I need you to prove that you can be the man I thought you were. The man I hoped you could be. But that man… he’s nowhere to be found right now.”
The words landed hard in Ravi’s chest. He swallowed, his throat tight with a rising lump. She was right, all of it. The man she had once believed in had been replaced by someone who had hurt her, who had broken her trust in ways he hadn’t even fully understood.
But there was still a part of him that refused to accept that this was the end. That part of him, the broken, desperate part, wanted to prove her wrong, to show her that he could still be better, not just for her, but for himself too.
“I’ll prove it,” he said, his voice barely more than a breath, but it rang with a raw conviction. “I don’t know how. But I will. I won’t stop trying, Didi. I made a huge mistake.”
She didn’t respond immediately. Her eyes softened for a split second, and for just that brief moment, Ravi thought he saw a flicker of something else, something like longing, or maybe regret.
But it was gone before he could grasp it, replaced by the cold walls she had erected around her heart.
The waiter returned with their drinks, and the sound of the glass being placed on the table shattered the fragile moment between them. Neither of them moved, both too wrapped in their own thoughts, the tension in the air almost unbearable.
Priya Didi’s hand lingered on the glass for just a second, as if steadying herself, before she picked it up, taking a slow sip.
For a moment, they both stared out the window, the faint clink of silverware in the background, but neither of them truly noticed the noise. The tension between them was too thick, too consuming.
Finally, Priya Didi spoke again, her voice quieter now, but still trembling with the weight of everything she had held back.
“I’m not sure if you’ll ever earn my forgiveness,” she said, her voice soft but filled with a trembling vulnerability. “But if you’re here… if you’re willing to try, maybe… maybe there’s a chance. But that’s all it is. A chance.”
Ravi’s heart pounded in his chest, the fragile hope he had been holding onto flickering like a small flame. He met her eyes, and this time, there was no anger in them, just something else. Something raw, unspoken, that hung between them.
“I’ll take that chance,” he said, his voice firm but quiet, the weight of his words sinking in. “I’ll take whatever you give me.”
The air between them shifted. It wasn’t forgiveness, not yet. But it was something, a step forward. Small, tentative, but still a step.
And for the first time in what felt like forever, Ravi allowed himself to believe that maybe, just maybe, there was still something worth fighting for.

Scene: The Auto Ride Back to Flat 205
The sun had begun its slow descent, casting an orange hue over the streets of Mumbai. The day was coming to an end, but the air still held the remnants of midday heat. The small café had offered a brief reprieve, but the distance between Ravi and Priya Didi hadn’t quite dissolved.
They still had their barriers, their unsaid words, and the remnants of betrayal and confusion floating between them like a fog neither could yet escape.
As they stepped outside, the busy city noise surged back into their senses. People huddled together in small groups, the honking of cars, the chatter of street vendors, and the constant hum of life around them. An auto rickshaw stood parked on the corner, a narrow space available for the two of them to squeeze in.
Priya Didi hesitated, glancing at the small vehicle, her brow furrowing for just a moment. She glanced at Ravi, her eyes momentarily betraying a soft flicker of unease.
“Shall we?” Ravi asked, his voice as light as he could make it, trying to keep things easy, even though his chest felt tight with anticipation.
She looked at him but said nothing as she moved toward the auto. The silence between them seemed heavier now, weighted with the emotional currents of their lunch. There was no anger, not at this moment, but a quiet undercurrent of something else, something softer, yet unsettling.
The auto rickshaw was small, barely enough space for the two of them to fit comfortably. The driver adjusted his rearview mirror, offering a distracted “Where to, sir?” as he pulled away from the curb.
Priya Didi sat first, and Ravi followed, easing in beside her. Their legs brushed as he settled into the seat, and for a moment, neither of them moved to adjust. Ravi’s heartbeat quickened at the unexpected proximity, the warmth of her skin so close to his. The tightness of the space made it impossible for them to sit apart, there was no escaping the closeness now.
The auto jerked forward, and they both shifted slightly, her shoulder grazing his arm. Priya Didi didn’t move away; in fact, for a fleeting moment, Ravi could have sworn she leaned just a fraction toward him.

Priya Didi’s presence felt impossibly near, her scent, a soft mixture of jasmine and something familiar, something uniquely hers, seeping into his senses. It wrapped around him, binding him to the moment, making it impossible to ignore the closeness.
Her shoulder grazing his arm was a spark neither of them had expected. The contact was fleeting, almost accidental, yet it sent a shiver through Ravi that he could hardly control. He felt the warmth of her body press gently against his side, just enough to make his heart stutter.
Priya Didi, for her part, seemed aware of the touch, but instead of recoiling, she allowed it to linger, her posture subtly softening. For a heartbeat, she leaned just a fraction closer, a silent acknowledgment of their shared proximity, her breath seeming to hitch in rhythm with the sway of the auto.
Ravi’s fingers itched to brush against her arm, to let the contact become intentional, yet he restrained himself, savoring the tension that danced between them. “She’s letting me be close… even if just a little,” he thought, every nerve alert, “maybe she’s not as angry as I feared. Maybe… maybe there’s still a chance.” And in that small, trembling closeness, something delicate, fragile, and dangerously hopeful began to thread itself between them, leaving both aware of the unspoken pull that neither dared name aloud.
“This is not what I expected. Why is she not pulling away? Why does she seem to tolerate this? She must feel it too, this tension, this pull,” Ravi thought, his hands resting on his lap, the edges of his fingers brushing the hem of her saree. “I shouldn’t be doing this. I shouldn’t feel this… but her touch, it’s like a fire under my skin. I want to reach for her, but… is it too soon? Is it too much? Will she even let me?”
Priya Didi sat stiffly at first, her hands folded neatly on her lap, her eyes fixed straight ahead, as if trying to distance herself from everything.
But even with her exterior composed, Ravi could see the way her jaw clenched slightly and the faint flutter of her eyelashes as if she were battling something within herself. He couldn’t tell what it was, anger, longing, or perhaps a combination of both.

“Why is this so difficult?” Priya thought, her heart betraying her calm expression. “I shouldn’t feel anything. I shouldn’t want him this close. I’m still angry, still hurt. But… he’s here, and it’s hard to ignore. Everything about him, every move, every word, why does it still make me ache? Why do I still feel him, even when I don’t want to?”
Priya Didi was aware of the subtle heat and pressure of his arm against hers. She could feel the faint tremor of his restraint, the careful tension in his posture. It made her pulse quicken, a small, confusing warmth stirring in her chest.
The sunlight, filtering through the tiny openings of the auto, caught in the strands of her hair, and she felt a strange awareness that every part of her presence was being silently observed. “He’s staring… he’s noticing. And I… I don’t want to look away.”
The auto swerved gently, and Priya Didi’s shoulder brushed against Ravi’s. For a split second, she stiffened, but then, without thinking, she relaxed just enough to let her shoulder rest lightly against his. Ravi’s breath hitched.
He couldn’t believe the softness in her body language. It wasn’t a rejection. It wasn’t a surrender either, but it was something in between, something that made him feel a small flicker of hope.
The auto jolted again, and their legs brushed as they shifted slightly, the confined space making it impossible to sit as far apart as either of them would have preferred. There was a momentary flinch, a flash of instinctive distance, but neither moved away.
Instead, Priya Didi’s hand, resting lightly on her lap, shifted imperceptibly closer to the edge of the seat, almost as if inviting the subtle contact. Ravi’s gaze flickered to her hand, then back to her profile.
Every small movement, the way her fingers flexed slightly, the soft arch of her neck, the way the sunlight highlighted the gentle curve of her jaw, made his heart tighten.
“Every inch of her… every breath, every subtle motion… she’s impossibly alive, and I can’t look away. Even now, she hates me, and yet… she’s letting me be this close.” His hand twitched, hovering over his own lap, restless. “If I reach out… would it be too much? Would she… pull away? Or… maybe, just maybe, she wants this too.”

Priya Didi felt a warmth spreading in her chest, one she couldn’t name. The faint brush of his arm against hers, the soft proximity, the way his presence seemed to vibrate quietly beside her, everything was both infuriating and achingly familiar.
Her eyes dropped to her hands, folded neatly in her lap, then flicked sideways to glance at him. “He’s right there… so close… and yet, I want him. I shouldn’t. I shouldn’t want this. I can’t forgive him yet. And yet… there’s something in his eyes. Something that makes me want to reach out, to… trust him.”
For a few moments, there was nothing but the noise of the auto, the road stretching out before them, the bustling city surrounding them. Neither spoke, but the quiet spoke louder than words ever could.
There was a subtle, undeniable warmth growing between them, despite the tension that had existed just hours ago. Ravi couldn’t decide if it was real or just a fleeting illusion, a momentary crack in the wall Priya Didi had so carefully built around herself.
“This is not what I expected. After everything, after all the hurt, the distance, how is this possible? How is she this close to me? How is it that I still want to reach for her, even when she’s made it clear she’s angry, hurt, and confused? Is this what hope feels like?” Ravi thought. He felt her presence so acutely now, the warmth of her shoulder against his, the soft rise and fall of her chest as she breathed, as though the air itself between them was changing.
For the briefest of moments, his hand, resting lightly on his lap, moved just slightly. He wasn’t sure if he was doing it consciously or not, but before he could pull back, he felt her fingers brush against his. It was small, just a fleeting moment, but it was enough.
Priya Didi’s breath caught in her throat, but she didn’t pull away. Instead, her fingers lingered, just enough to let them touch, just enough for Ravi to feel the warmth of her hand on his. Neither of them moved. Neither of them spoke.
The touch was so simple, so subtle, yet it felt like the world had paused for just a second. Ravi’s pulse quickened, and the weight of the moment pressed in on him.

He could feel the nervous flutter in his chest, the uncertainty of what to do next. But for once, he didn’t want to pull away. He didn’t want to run.
Ravi, sensing her stillness, let his fingers hover, then rest lightly on her fingers, the faintest of contact, almost as if the universe had paused to hold them in that moment.
“Her hand… it’s warm. She’s letting me stay like this. She’s letting me be close. She’s not pulling away. Maybe… maybe this is something. Maybe she’s not as angry as I thought. Maybe she’s changing… maybe there’s hope. Maybe… maybe I can still fix this. Maybe we can still…” Ravi’s thoughts were a jumble, his heart racing as he carefully allowed his hand to stay where it was, letting the warmth of her touch seep into his skin.
Priya Didi, for her part, could feel the subtle pull of his hand, the way his fingers hovered just a hair away from hers, and she felt something stir in her chest. Something she hadn’t allowed herself to feel in months, something she didn’t know whether to trust or deny.
“Why is he still here? Why does he feel like this, even after everything I’ve done? I can’t make him leave. I can’t push him away. It would hurt too much. Why does his touch still feel… right? Why does it feel like… I never wanted him to go?”
She kept her hand still, not moving away, not pulling closer, but allowing their fingers to brush, just lightly, like the gentlest of acknowledgments. She didn’t say anything. She didn’t need to. The message was already in the way they stayed like this, so close, yet so far, but with just enough connection to make everything else fade away.
For the remainder of the ride, neither of them pulled away. Their hands stayed close, the faintest of touches passing between them. The city passed by, but in that small space between them, time seemed to slow down.
Ravi couldn’t help but feel a surge of something he hadn’t allowed himself to feel in months, hope. There was hope now. There was a chance that this could be the start of something, something beyond all the hurt, beyond all the mistakes.
“I don’t know how or when. But maybe, just maybe, we’ll find our way back,” Ravi thought as he let his hand rest softly against hers, the softest of promises. “Maybe I won’t have to keep apologizing. Maybe one day, she’ll know… this, this is what I wanted. This is what I’ve been waiting for.”
