Detective Board

Srinu sat down on the edge of the bed, Ganga’s diary heavy in his hands. His eyes lingered on the last line of the current page:


“Hello? This is Constable Sundari. Who is speaking?”

He stared at it in silence.

Did Ganga actually tell Sundari about Javed after he left the house? Srinu's heart thumped against his chest. He needed to know. He needed closure.

He eagerly turned to the next page, expecting a continuation of the conversation between Ganga and Sundari.

But what he saw next… left him confused.

The page wasn’t about Sundari. In fact, it had nothing to do with that night or Javed at all.

In fact, the entry was about the day when Srinu first learned about the diary, the day when Srinu hid behind the wall to catch Ganga with the auto wala but found out about Ranga the thief.  

Where was the rest?

Srinu flipped back and forth between the pages in growing panic. Something was wrong.

Yang (rolling his eyes): “Sundari? Priya? Who is it again? I’m so confused! This is getting so fucking complicated! I can’t keep track of them anymore!”

Yin gave a subtle nod, understanding but persistent.

Yin: “Yes, Srinu… it is getting complicated.”

Srinu took a deep breath, closing his eyes.

Srinu (with quiet resolve): “I know. I need to simplify things... if I’m going to understand what really happened.”

Yang (curtly): How do you plan on doing that?

Without another word, he grabbed the diary and the note, pocketed his phone, and walked out of the bedroom.

He headed downstairs to his office room, a new plan already forming in his head.

srinu pushed the door open and stepped into his office. Srinu grabbed a handful of markers and a stack of sticky notes from his desk drawer.

Srinu walked to the whiteboard in the far corner. This whiteboard was usually covered in my work — clean lines of code structure, algorithm flows, branching decision trees.

But not tonight.

Srinu (still staring at the board):

“Yes… I’ve divided the investigation into three parts. It’s going to make everything a lot simpler.”

Yang (confused): “I’m still confused.”

Yang (angrily): “What do you mean by that, Yin?”

Yin (flatly): “I meant… if you could get over your anger for once and actually think, you’d understand.”

Yang (sarcastic): “Oh, Yin… if you’re so smart, please, enlighten me.”

Yin (patiently, explaining): “Alright. Listen carefully. Srinu has divided the investigation into three parts:

1. What happened in Ganga’s childhood?

2. What happened in the three weeks when Srinu was in the hospital?

3. What happened at Adda?”

Yang hummed absentmindedly as Yin spoke, trying to follow along.

Yin (continuing): “Now… to answer each question, we need to talk to different people.

For #2 — the missing three weeks — we talk to Sundari.

For #3 — Adda — we talk to Swathi.”

Yang (after a pause, narrowing his eyes): “I have only one question… why?”

Yin fell silent. No comeback this time.

Yin: “So we have a plan. But, Srinu… where do you want to start?”

srinu studied the board for several seconds. he eyes locked on Sundari’s phone number.

Yin: “I don’t think it’ll be that simple… especially if she’s involved. You should follow her and get information without her knowing.”
