Categories: Fiction, Mystery, Suspense, Thriller

From New York Times bestselling author James Lee Burke, Detective Dave Robicheaux becomes entangled in a mystery that connects a series of grisly murders with an ex-convict turned bestselling author, a notorious local pimp, and the man currently dating Robicheaux's daughter.
On the trail of a killer responsible for the deaths of seven young women in neighboring Jefferson Davis parish, Detective Dave Robicheaux and his best friend Clete Purcel can't seem to stay away from Herman Stanga, a notorious pimp whose name constantly resurfaces in their investigation, and whom both men despise. When Stanga turns up dead shortly after a fierce beating in front of numerous witnesses at the hands of Clete Purcel, the case takes a nasty turn, and solving the mystery of the Jefferson Davis deaths becomes more important than ever.

Adding to Robicheaux's troubles is the matter of his adopted daughter, Alafair, on hiatus from Stanford Law for a semester and home in New Iberia to put the finishing touches on her novel. Her literary pursuit has led her into the arms of Kermit Abelard, celebrated novelist and scion of a once-prominent Louisiana family whose fortunes are slowly sinking into the bayous. In Robicheaux's mind, Abelard's association with a sleazy ex-convict turned bestselling author named Robert Weingart puts him at the center of some very shady business, and Robicheaux fears he's taking Alafair down with him. But at the same time he fears for Alafair's well-being-and possibly her life-she's becoming more distant toward him, convinced his concerns are just the paranoia of an overprotective father. To protect his daughter and clear his best friend's name, Robicheaux will need every ounce of guts, wit, and investigative chops he can muster.

From the creator of "one of America's best mystery series" ( Library Journal, starred review), James Lee Burke's The Glass Rainbow is a "superlative" ( Publishers Weekly, starred review) bayou thriller.

Enter once more the world of Roland Deschain-and the world of the Dark Tower...now presented in a stunning graphic novel form that will unlock the doorways to terrifying secrets and bold storytelling as part of the dark fantasy masterwork and magnum opus from #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King.
"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." With these unforgettable words, millions of readers were introduced to Stephen King's iconic character Roland Deschain of Gilead. Roland is the last of his kind, a "gunslinger" charged with protecting whatever goodness and light remains in his world-a world that "moved on," as they say. In this desolate reality-a dangerous land filled with ancient technology and deadly magic, and yet one that mirrors our own in frightening ways-Roland is on a spellbinding and soul-shattering quest to locate and somehow save the mystical nexus of all worlds, all universes: the Dark Tower.

Now, in the graphic novel series Stephen King's The Dark Tower: Beginnings, originally published by Marvel Comics in single-issue form and creatively overseen by Stephen King himself, the full story of Roland's troubled past and coming-of-age is revealed. Sumptuously drawn by Jae Lee and Richard Isanove, plotted by longtime Stephen King expert Robin Furth, and scripted by New York Times bestselling author Peter David, Beginnings is an extraordinary and terrifying journey into Roland's origins-ultimately serving as the perfect introduction for new readers to Stephen King's modern literary classic The Dark Tower, while giving longtime fans thrilling adventures merely hinted at in his blockbuster novels.

Bringing the dramatic history of Roland into chronological order-as originally published in the novels The Gunslinger and Wizard and Glass- T he Gunslinger Born begins with a reckless act of courage that gains Roland his first set of guns and earns him and his friends, Cuthbert Allgood and Alain Johns, a special mission to the town of Hambry...not only for their personal safety but on behalf of the Affiliation-an alliance resisting the ruinous advance of "the Good Man," a monster named John Farson. But the expedition will quickly become Roland's first experience of the evil forces that he will encounter again and again throughout his life, and in a myriad of guises. And he will also discover the overwhelming power and pain of true love, through which, more than anything, he will learn beyond a shadow of a doubt what things are worth killing for....

On a sunny day in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, eight-year-old Becca Burke was struck by lightning. No one believed her - not her philandering father or her drunk, love-sick mother - not even when her watch kept losing time and a spooky halo of light appeared overhead in photographs. Becca was struck again when she was 16. She survived, but over time she would learn that outsmarting lightning was the least of her concerns.
In rural Arkansas, Buckley R. Pitank's world seemed plagued by disaster. Ashamed but protective of his obese mother, fearful of his scathing grandmother, and always running from bullies (including his pseudo-evangelical stepfather), he needed a miracle to set him free. At 13 years old, Buckley witnessed a lightning strike that would change everything.
Now an art student in New York City, Becca Burke is a gifted but tortured painter who strives to recapture the intensity of her lightning-strike memories on canvas. On the night of her first gallery opening, a stranger appears and is captivated by her art. Who is this odd young man with whom she shares a mysterious connection? When Buckley and Becca finally meet, neither is prepared for the charge of emotions - or for the perilous event that will bring them even closer to one another and to the families they've been running from for as long as they can remember.

From the book:
Dick Mason, caught in the press of a beaten army, fell back slowly with his comrades toward a ford of Bull Run. The first great battle of the Civil War had been fought and lost. Lost, after it had been won! Young as he was Dick knew that fortune had been with the North until the very closing hour. He did not yet know how it had been done. He did not know how the Northern charges had broken in vain on the ranks of Stonewall Jackson's men. He did not know how the fresh Southern troops from the Valley of Virginia had hurled themselves so fiercely on the Union flank. But he did know that his army had been defeated and was retreating on the capital.
Cannon still thundered to right and left, and now and then showers of bursting shell sprayed over the heads of the tired and gloomy soldiers. Dick, thoughtful and scholarly, was in the depths of a bitterness and despair reached by few of those around him. The Union, the Republic, had appealed to him as the most glorious of experiments. He could not bear to see it broken up for any cause whatever. It had been founded with too much blood and suffering and labor to be dissolved in a day on a Virginia battlefield.

From Publishers Weekly
The search for Daniel Ronson, a British lawyer who disappears soon after the destruction of the space shuttle Columbia in 2003, fuels Wener's third novel to be published in the U.S., but what really propels it off the launch pad is the portrait of Daniel's eccentric younger sister, Claire, who determines to track him down. Wondering if the Columbia tragedy might have triggered a post-traumatic stress reaction (Daniel and Claire's father died of a heart attack shortly after the 1986 Challenger disaster), Claire leaves the U.K. for Miami, where she hopes to find some answers. She gets some sleuthing advice from Huey, a down-on-his-luck actor, and Huey's goofy boa constrictor-loving girlfriend. While a subplot in which Huey plots revenge against real-life producer Harvey Weinstein, whom the actor blames for his sagging career, is funny, it's so strained that it blurs the focus on an otherwise lovely contemplation about recovering from the black holes in every family's life. Wener (_The Perfect Play_) is the former lead singer of the British pop band Sleeper. (Oct.)

The former Sleeper singer's third novel (following Goodnight Steve McQueen, 2004) showcases the author's increasingly effective ability to shift between caustic one-liners and quieter scenes full of insight and feeling. When successful London attorney Daniel mysteriously disappears, it's left to his younger sister, Claire, a promiscuous free spirit, to lead the effort to track him down. Her dysfunctional family seems even more feckless in the face of crisis--her mother is an alcoholic who turns harsh and vindictive after her second gin and tonic, and her sister seems more intent on stealing Claire's latest boyfriend than on finding their brother. Claire heads for Florida, with her ex-husband along for support, sensing that their father's death there long ago, witnessed only by Daniel on the day the Challenger exploded, may be the key to his disappearance and to her family's emotional paralysis. Wener evokes modern London and old Miami with just the right amount of detail in a winning novel that mixes a little mystery, a little romance, and a lot of comedy. Joanne Wilkinson

A fantastical reimagining of the American West which draws its influence from steampunk, the American western tradition, and magical realism
The world is only half made. What exists has been carved out amidst a war between two rival factions: the Line, paving the world with industry and claiming its residents as slaves; and the Gun, a cult of terror and violence that cripples the population with fear. The only hope at stopping them has seemingly disappeared-the Red Republic that once battled the Gun and the Line, and almost won. Now they're just a myth, a bedtime story parents tell their children, of hope.
To the west lies a vast, uncharted world, inhabited only by the legends of the immortal and powerful Hill People, who live at one with the earth and its elements. Liv Alverhyusen, a doctor of the new science of psychology, travels to the edge of the made world to a spiritually protected mental institution in order to study the minds of those broken by the Gun and the Line. In its rooms lies an old general of the Red Republic, a man whose shattered mind just may hold the secret to stopping the Gun and the Line. And either side will do anything to understand how.

In 1978 Stephen King introduced the world to the last Gunslinger, Roland of Gilead. Nothing has been the same since. Over twenty years later the quest for the Dark Tower continues to take readers on a wildly epic ride. Through parallel worlds and across time, Roland must brave desolate wastelands and endless deserts, drifting into the unimaginable and the familiar as the road to the Dark Tower extends beyond its own pages. A classic tale of colossal scope-crossing over terrain from The Stand, The Eyes of the Dragon, Insomnia, The Talisman, Black House, Hearts in Atlantis, 'Salem's Lot and other familiar King haunts-the adventure takes hold with the turn of each page.

And the tower awaits...

The First Volume in the Epic DARK TOWER Series...

The Gunslinger

This heroic fantasy is set in a world of ominous landscape and macabre menace that is a dark mirror of our own. A spellbinding tale of good versus evil, it features one of Stephen King's most powerful creations-The Gunslinger, a haunting figure who embodies the qualities of the lone hero through the ages, from ancient myth to frontier western legend.

The Gunslinger's quest involves the pursuit of The Man in Black, a liaison with the sexually ravenous Alice, and a friendship with the kid from Earth called Jake. Both grippingly realistic and eerily dreamlike, here is stunning proof of Stephen King's storytelling sorcery.
