The Economist Audio Edition - May 17, 2025
English | 8 h 2 m | MP3 | 217 MB

"It is not only The Economist's name that people find baffling. Here are some other common questions.
First, why does it call itself a newspaper? Even when The Economist incorporated the Bankers' Gazette and Railway Monitor from 1845 to 1932, it also described itself as "a political, literary and general newspaper".
It still does so because, in addition to offering analysis and opinion, it tries in each issue to cover the main events-business and political-of the week. It goes to press on Thursdays and, printed simultaneously in six countries, is available in most of the world's main cities the following day or soon after. Readers everywhere get the same editorial matter. The advertisements differ. The running order of the sections, and sometimes the cover, also differ. But the words are the same, except that each week readers in Britain get a few extra pages devoted to British news.
Why is it anonymous? Many hands write The Economist, but it speaks with a collective voice. Leaders are discussed, often disputed, each week in meetings that are open to all members of the editorial staff. Journalists often co-operate on articles. And some articles are heavily edited. The main reason for anonymity, however, is a belief that what is written is more important than who writes it. As Geoffrey Crowther, editor from 1938 to 1956, put it, anonymity keeps the editor "not the master but the servant of something far greater than himself. You can call that ancestor-worship if you wish, but it gives to the paper an astonishing momentum of thought and principle."

This CompTIA Tech+ training helps IT beginners build essential skills. Learn to troubleshoot hardware, software, and networks, and manage devices - all while you prep for the Tech+ exam. Designed as the ideal starting point for IT careers, the Tech+ certification validates hands-on expertise in foundational IT concepts. Master IT fundamentals, security, and software development to land your first IT job. This CompTIA training is ideal for individuals or teams, and can support onboarding and skill development.

What you'll learn
Understanding core IT concepts like networking and security basics
Setting up and managing computers, mobile devices, and basic networks
Writing basic code and programs
Configuring operating systems and performing system updates
Implementing cybersecurity best practices to protect data and networks'
Troubleshooting hardware, software, and network issues

FAQs
Is CompTIA being phased out?

No, CompTIA is definitely not being phased out, and it's not going anywhere. CompTIA is, has been, and will continue to be a leading provider of IT certifications. CompTIA does periodically retire its certifications that lose relevancy or get aged out, but classic certifications like A+ and Network+ are here to stay. CompTIA also regularly adds new certifications to its catalogue, like the Tech+, which was launched in late 2024.
Is Tech+ certification worth it?

Yes, for IT newcomers, the Tech+ is a focused, up-to-date foundation in tech essentials like hardware, software, and networking. More advanced IT professionals (people with a couple years of experience) probably don't need to worry about earning the Tech+, but it's worth it for brand new professionals. It can help you boost your resume and prove you're serious about getting started in your IT career.
How much does it cost to earn the Tech+?

At the time of this writing, CompTIA hasn't released pricing details for the Tech+ and its exam FC0-U71. The certification was announced in late 2024, and although some of the materials are available, CompTIA hasn't announced pricing yet. Since Tech+ will become one of their core certifications, and fall somewhere in-between ITF+ and A+, it's a good guess that the Tech+ will cost about $250.
What CompTIA cert is the hardest?

The most difficult CompTIA certification is probably the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP+). Unlike CompTIA's other certs, CASP+ is meant for experienced cybersecurity professionals who are deeply familiar with enterprise security, risk management, and cryptographic technologies. The CASP+ exam has performance based questions that demand practical problem-solving under pressure. The rigorous CASP+ is made to reveal real-world expertise with cybersecurity, likely making it CompTIA's hardest exam.
How difficult is the Tech+?

The Tech+ is not an especially difficult certification or exam. Designed to teach new IT professionals the essential tech understanding needed to succeed in their first IT job, the Tech+ is challenging but fair. With the right preparation in basic IT concepts, fundamental security concerns, and software development basics, it provides a solid foundation for entry-level roles and opens the door to more advanced certifications like A+.

Who is this for?
This CompTIA Tech+ training is considered foundational-level CompTIA training, which means it was designed for junior IT professionals. This IT concepts and terminology skills course is valuable for new IT professionals with at least a year of experience with IT and experienced junior IT professionals looking to validate their CompTIA skills.

Eagerness to learn and build a real-time app!

Description
Want to build a real-time social media app with modern tools like NextJS, React Query, and Socket IO? This course is for you.In this hands-on project-based course, you'll build the frontend of a full-featured social media platform from scratch. You'll implement real-time features such as live chat, notifications, and user presence using WebSockets (Socket IO). With React Query, you'll master efficient data fetching, caching, pagination, and optimistic updates to provide a smooth user experience.We'll use NextJS App Router, Material UI, and TypeScript to build clean, scalable, and modern UI components. You'll also implement core social media features like posts, likes, comments, and friends systems with a fully interactive UI.Whether you're an intermediate developer looking to build your portfolio or a React developer aiming to learn advanced tools and patterns - this course will guide you step by step.Another major focus is React Query-one of the most powerful and widely-used libraries for handling server state in modern React apps. You'll learn how to effectively use it for fetching, caching, and mutating data, along with advanced techniques like:Optimistic updates for instant UI feedbackInfinite scrolling for dynamic feed loadingThis course isn't just about building a project-it's about understanding when, why, and how to use the right tools for building fast, scalable, and real-time frontend applications.Note: This course does not focus heavily on Server Components, as we are building a social media app-a type of application where data changes frequently and requires real-time updates. Instead, we prioritize the tools and techniques best suited for highly dynamic, interactive user experiences.

Does the fact that we depend on very exact, almost scientifically rigid recipes make us great cooks-or does that take the fun and creativity out of the whole experience?

Does the fact that we depend on very exact, almost scientifically rigid recipes make us great cooks-or does that take the fun and creativity out of the whole experience? What was cooking like before the internet, before meat thermometers, grocery stores, and internationally standardized measurements? And more importantly, who were these cooks of the past and who did they cook for?

In Cooking across the Ages, award-winning Professor Ken Albala of the University of the Pacific takes us on a fascinating international journey through civilizations across the ages-showing us who we were, how we lived, and why-through the lens of cooking. In 24 fascinating lectures, you will learn

About the values and flavor preferences of ancient peoples, in addition to the labor that went into their daily tasks;
How regional foods in the Middle Ages reflected travel and trade among Mediterranean peoples;
How regional foods in the Renaissance reflected unique relationships between far-flung nations;
Who turned to cookbooks for medical and romantic advice and why; and
Why mid-century Americans idealized canned foods as the height of luxury.
But in addition to learning about this history, you'll have the opportunity to taste it and smell it, exploring cuisines of the past through a type of gastronomic time travel as Professor Albala prepares dishes and illustrates techniques in each lecture. Throughout the 24 lectures as he cooks, Professor Albala welcomes you into his own home kitchen, a cozy place where he encourages you to relax, experiment, and shed any gastronomic insecurities at the door.

Through the Pages of Cookbooks
For the vast majority of human history, learning to cook was accomplished in the kitchen, through observation and practice. As Professor Albala explains, cookbooks may not always be the best tool for learning how to cook, but they are an excellent entryway for discovering the tastes and values of earlier cultures. Our modern tools and techniques have distanced us from the textures, aromas, and flavor combinations that were very much loved in the past and just wouldn't occur to us today.

In addition to cooking these recipes from the past, you'll learn to explore the cookbook itself as a subject of historical study. Whether it comes from a painted palm leaf, a vellum manuscript inscribed with a quill and ink, or an internet website, Professor Albala shows you the impact of our ability to pass recipes and techniques across generations. When cookbooks came into being, they were able to transmit information to an audience beyond one kitchen. That information was often about much more than how to cook. Even stains left behind on a recipe can teach us something about cooking-and living-in the past.

Among the many cookbooks explored in Cooking across the Ages, you will discover the secrets of

The Art and Craft of a Master Cook. Known as the Opera, and published in 1570 by renowned papal chef Bartolomeo Scappi, this was the first illustrated cookbook. In addition to recipes, this encyclopedic tome included full menus and described dishes for every ingredient known at that place and time.
Soopa Shastra. Contemporaneous with the Opera, this book was published a world away in the current state of Karnataka, India. Commissioned by a local magnate, it was written on palm leaf paper in the classical Kannada language in 358 stanzas and filled with a limited range of local ingredients.
Recipes from the Garden of Contentment. This exceptional book was written by the great 18th-century Qing Dynasty poet Yuan Mei. After having worked his way up into a high position in the Imperial administration, Yuan Mei turned his back on it all to travel, contemplate cooking, and tend his garden-before writing this classic of Chinese gastronomy.
American Cookery. Published in 1796 in Connecticut and New York in two separate editions, this book is considered the first truly American cookbook. Its author, Amelia Simmons, said the book was written for cooks of all social classes, from elegant households to the most humble farmer, showing the democratizing spirit of America in its cuisine.
While these cookbooks can give us a glimpse into the ingredients and techniques of the past, they can also tell us a lot about the places they came from, what people looked for in the foods they prepared, and how cuisine has changed over the centuries.

Not in Your Pantry?

Not surprisingly, some of the ingredients used in these centuries-old cookbooks might not be in your pantry. Some have become extinct-such as silphium, a favorite seasoning in Roman times. Others are proteins that seem shocking because we just don't eat them now, including crane, dormouse, flamingo, hedgehog, ostrich, porpoise, and swan, to name a few.

Some ingredients in these books might be difficult to find at your local supermarket, but the internet has made them much more accessible. Many can be found at smaller, specialized shops and international markets. When necessary, Professor Albala offers alternatives while also teaching you about the way the original ingredients can open up a door to the past. From asafetida to zander, here are a few ingredients you might not have in your personal pantry ... yet

Asafetida, a gum extract and pungent yellow powder, used most often in Indian cooking;
Garum, a fermented fish sauce that was extremely popular during Roman times, usually made from small fish that were left to ferment for months;
Grains of Paradise, also known as melegueta pepper, originated on the west coast of Africa and was once commonly used throughout Europe;
Jujubes, an Asian fruit that tastes similar to the dates we're familiar with when dried, but not as sweet;
Mandioca flour, made from the cassava root and native to South America, used in all forms of Brazilian cooking today;
Pennyroyal, a minty herb that reached its height of popularity in the Middle Ages, and was also used to kill fleas and treat skin disease, among other ailments; and
Zander, a fish that has been enjoyed by Russians for centuries.
With Professor Albala's welcoming attitude, easy-to-follow directions, and warm sense of humor, you'll find yourself cooking with these ingredients and more-and enjoying wonderful foods from across the globe and across the ages. From a tasty bread salad of ancient Rome to the poured chocolate of the Aztecs, from a delicious German cabbage of the 19th century to Indian jackfruit soup, with Cooking across the Ages, you'll get a taste of history like you've never experienced before!

What Will You Learn?
Learn about the ebb and flow of cuisine cycles, from complexity to simplicity and back again.

Discover why only some historic cookbooks focused on recipes.

Learn how cuisine has been influenced by trade and travel throughout the ages.

TTC - The Human Journey

What a remarkable journey we've been on. Emerging as a distinct species some 300,000 years ago, we spread across Africa, then peopled Asia, Europe, Australia, and eventually the Americas. We crossed land bridges, sailed open seas, and created farmlands and cities. But why did we become the primate that migrates-while all our ape cousins never left the regions where they evolved millions of years ago?

What a remarkable journey we've been on. Emerging as a distinct species some 300,000 years ago, we spread across Africa, then peopled Asia, Europe, Australia, and eventually the Americas. We crossed land bridges, sailed open seas, and created farmlands and cities. But why did we become the primate that migrates-while all our ape cousins never left the regions where they evolved millions of years ago? Among the many factors, these traits played a significant role

Cooperation: Humans developed a rare capacity for large-scale cooperation beyond kin groups. We hunted together, shared food, taught one another, and formed social bonds that made long journeys and survival in new environments possible.
Fire: Using fire made us a different being. It enabled us to survive cold places, deter predators, and cook food-transforming tough raw ingredients into nutritious, easy-to-digest meals that freed us from constant foraging and allowed sustained travel.
Carrying Technology: The invention of simple carrying tools-bladders, slings, bags, baskets-equipped early humans for transporting water, food, tools, and infants. This freed our hands, extended our range, and supported groups over long distances.
Now that we've expanded from small bands to billions of people spread across most of the planet, we've become victims of our own success. Millions are currently on the move-not in search of new frontiers, but to escape rising seas, extreme heat, fierce storms, political instability, and deepening economic hardship. For better or worse, migration is our destiny.

The Human Journey covers this epic story in 12 half-hour lectures taught by award-winning science writer, author, and broadcaster Gaia Vince. Few presentations have the scope of this course, taking you from the Stone Age to the future, and featuring topics in anthropology, genetics, archaeology, economics, psychology, and Earth science. Throughout the course, the focus is on the unifying theme of migration, which is more than movement-it's the very key to our species' success and the universal human experience.

Rethinking Migration
Once seen as a simple, one-way journey out of Africa, ancient human migration is now understood as complex, multidirectional, and ongoing. Genetic discoveries have revealed interbreeding with other human species, introducing traits that enhanced survival in non-tropical environments. These studies also point to multiple migration waves, dead ends, and backtracking. Climate shifts-not just curiosity or conquest-often drove people to move. And far from being a footnote in prehistory, migration is now recognized as a constant force, shaping who we are, where we live, and how we adapt. The Human Journey highlights striking examples, including

Neanderthals and Denisovans: As modern humans moved out of Africa, they met and mixed with other human species. Genes from Neanderthals and Denisovans helped us handle cold climates and thin air-useful for thriving in previously unsuitable places.
The First Americans: Around 20,000 years ago, humans began arriving in the Americas, likely in multiple waves. Some followed inland routes, others moved along the coast, adapting to an astonishing range of ecosystems, from the Arctic to Tierra del Fuego.
Origin of the Indo-Europeans: About 5,000 years ago, the Yamnaya-steppe herders from Central Asia-began pushing outward. With them traveled wagons, horses, and the seeds of languages from Hindi to Persian, Spanish, Russian, and English.

The Future of Migration
Migration didn't just spread people-it spread ideas, tools, weapons, skills, and social structures. Agriculture, cities, and civilization arose not in isolation, but through the movement and mingling of human groups across regions. Even with the rise of city-states and empires in the ancient world, there were few if any efforts to restrict ordinary people from crossing regional boundaries. Borders were often vague, and unless an armed force was involved, movement went largely unregulated. The notion of a tightly controlled national border-designed to keep out foreigners-is a modern invention.

In the last third of The Human Journey, you'll analyze how that restrictive policy is being tested. As changing climate and political upheaval force large populations to move, what was once a manageable stream is becoming a destabilizing wave-challenging governments that still treat migration as something exceptional, rather than inevitable. The following background ideas help explain what's going on

Optimal Climate: Humans evolved to thrive in regions with an average annual temperature between 52°F and 59°F. Our crops, livestock, and economic systems are finely tuned to this climate. The farther outside that range, the harder it is to sustain life.
150 Contacts: We are wired by evolution to maintain close social ties with around 150 individuals and can be cautious toward outsiders. Yet, our productive societies are also highly dependent on outsiders, especially as birthrates plunge. This means finding ways to overcome any instinctual distrust and welcome migrants.
National Borders Are New: The idea of a unified national identity-and the nation-state to embody it-didn't generally take shape until the 19th century. Passports weren't widely required for international travel until well into the 20th.
The upshot is that the regions best suited for human habitation are shifting rapidly, with many places becoming unlivable, even as our modern institutions increase the barriers to migration. The Human Journey proposes several strategies to help break this impasse. One way or another, we must learn to accommodate a migratory compulsion as old as our species itself. By the end of this course, you will see that to understand migration is to understand ourselves.

What Will You Learn?
Discover the key factors that made us successful at moving to new environments

Trace our routes out of Africa and eventually around the world

Investigate the role of Neanderthals and Denisovans in our adaptation to harsh environments

Preview the waves of migration, soon to be underway, as portions of the planet become uninhabitable

Consider the most effective policies for resettling environmental refugees
