Понятие спина был предложено в 1925 году Дж.Уленбеком и С.Гоудсмитом для объ-
яснения тонкой структуры спектров излучения атомов. Спин как внутренняя сте-
пень свободы является фундаментальным свойством частицы наравне с её массой и
электрическим зарядом. В начале эры экспериментов с ускоренными частицами счи-
талось, что такая малость как спин совершенно не влияет на столкновения высоко
энергичных частиц. Однако, в последствии выяснилось, что сечения взаимодействия
элементарных частиц также существенным образом зависят от спиновых перемен-
ных. Это обстоятельство естественно привело исследователей еще в середине прошло-
го века к мысли о возможности использовать спин как дополнительный инструмент
изучения элементарных частиц. В настоящее время большинство экспериментов в
физике высоких энергий и ядерной физике проводится на ускорителях, где первич-
ные частицы обладают спином. Последние десятилетия демонстрируют нарастаю-
щий интерес физиков к постановке экспериментов с поляризованными частицами.
Для этих целей были разработаны интенсивные источники пучков поляризованных
частиц, понята динамика спина в ускорителях и развиты методы управления на-
правлением и степенью поляризации. Многие ускорители были модернизированы
для использования поляризованных пучков. Как правило, сегодня установки нового
поколения изначально проектируются с учетом возможности поляризационных ис-
следований и многие лаборатории во всем мире включают поляризованные пучки в
свои будущие программы.
Сравнительно недавний успех Брукхейвенской Национальной Лаборатории (БНЛ)
по накоплению и ускорению поляризованных встречных протонных пучков в уста-
новке RHIC до энергии 250 Гэв c применением так называемых Сибирских змеек и
спиновых ротаторов является, с одной стороны, кульминацией усилий многих лабо-
раторий мира в области поляризованных пучков в течение последних 50-60 лет, а, с
другой стороны, открывает путь ускорения поляризованных пучков до более высо-
ких энергий. В связи с этим динамика спинов в ускорителях еще долгое время будет
востребована новыми поколениями специалистов. Однако, необходимые сведения по
данному вопросу разбросаны в большом количестве теоретических и эксперимен-
тальных работ и частично отражены в двух-трех обзорных статьях на английском
языке.
Автор этой книги более 10 лет читает курс "Пучки поляризованных частиц в уско-
рителях и накопителях"на кафедре ускорителей в Новосибирском государственном
университете и на собственном опыте ощутил необходимость современного широкого
обзора обсуждаемых вопросов. Такой обзор должен описывать основные принципы
ускорения поляризованных пучков, дать примеры практической реализации и при-
менения поляризованных пучков как в современных, так и в исторически важных
экспериментах. В частности, должно быть также уделено внимание фундаменталь-
ным физическим принципам и физике ускорителей в той части, которая необходима
для понимания проблем ускорения поляризованных частиц.
С самого начала необходимо подчеркнуть различие между двумя понятиями:
спин-свойство отдельной элементарной частицы и поляризация - один из пара-
метров пучка в целом. Измерение поляризация пучка совершенно необходимо как
в процессе ускорения частиц, так и для проведения физических экспериментов. В
связи с этим отдельная глава посвящена методам измерения поляризации пучков,
развитым к настоящему времени как для электронов, так и для протонов.
В представленном обзоре рассматривается, в основном, ускорение в циклических
ускорителях частиц со спином 1∕2 (электроны, позитроны, мюоны и протоны). Учи-
тывая нарастающий интерес к экспериментам с поляризованными дейтронами, спин
которых равн 1, упоминаются также и особенности ускорения этих частиц. Однако,
целый ряд важных вопросов, которые еще требуют своего разрешения, таких как по-
ляризованные частицам в линейных коллайдерах, пучки поляризованных μ-мезонов
и т.д., явно выходят за рамки этого обзора.
Мы не будем также обсуждать (кроме редких упоминаний) источники поляри-
зованных частиц и поляризованные мишени - тему, вообще говоря, крайне важную
для людей, работающих с поляризованными пучками. Эта тема заслуживает отдель-
ного обзора, который еще ждет своего автора. Недаром, обсуждению этих вопросов
специально посвящена регулярная серия международных совещаний.
В данном обзоре кратко предстален ряд исследований и эксприментов по раз-
витию и применению пучков поляризованных частиц в физике высоких энергий.
Автору посчастливилось принять участие в заметной части этих исследований, вы-
полненных в разные годы, на различных установках и в разных лабораториях в
течение почти 50 лет. Написание этого обзора, в значительной мере, продиктовано
искренним желанием автора выразить признательность многочисленным соавторам
полученных результатов и поблагодарить всех участников работы. Отдельно, необхо-
димо отметить многогранный вклад А.Н.Скринского в создание в ИЯФ, еще в 60-ти
десятых годах прошлого столетия и сохраненной поныне, творческой атмосферы в
вопросах теории и практического использования поляризации.

German US-Autofahrer stufen auch heute noch Diesel-Pkw als absurdes Unding ein und favorisieren eindeutig Pkw mit Ottomotor, wohingegen sich deutsche Konsumenten beim Kauf eines Neuwagens immer häufiger fuer ein Dieselauto entscheiden. Bisherige Erklärungsansätze gehen davon aus, dass hierfuer ausschliesslich Kostenargumente verantwortlich sind. Christopher Neumaier zeigt jedoch, wie gerade kulturelle, technologische und politische Faktoren die Konsumentscheidung fuer oder gegen ein Dieselauto beeinflussen, da sie die öffentliche Wahrnehmung der Diesel-Pkw massgeblich prägen. In den USA gelten Dieselautos als träge, laut, unzuverlässig und nicht umweltfreundlich; in Deutschland werden sie dagegen als sparsam, langlebig, zuverlässig, umweltfreundlich und mittlerweile auch als leistungsstark wahrgenommen. Das Spektrum der analysierten Fallbeispiele spannt sich von einzelnen Dieselmodellen - wie dem ersten Mercedes-Benz Turbodiesel, dem VW Golf Diesel und den Dieselwagen von General Motors - bis hin zu den von Partikelemissionen ausgehenden Krebsrisiken und der öffentlichen Debatte ueber den Treibhauseffekt.
