"It is not only The Economist's name that people find baffling. Here are some other common questions.
First, why does it call itself a newspaper? Even when The Economist incorporated the Bankers' Gazette and Railway Monitor from 1845 to 1932, it also described itself as "a political, literary and general newspaper".
It still does so because, in addition to offering analysis and opinion, it tries in each issue to cover the main events-business and political-of the week. It goes to press on Thursdays and, printed simultaneously in six countries, is available in most of the world's main cities the following day or soon after. Readers everywhere get the same editorial matter. The advertisements differ. The running order of the sections, and sometimes the cover, also differ. But the words are the same, except that each week readers in Britain get a few extra pages devoted to British news.
Why is it anonymous? Many hands write The Economist, but it speaks with a collective voice. Leaders are discussed, often disputed, each week in meetings that are open to all members of the editorial staff. Journalists often co-operate on articles. And some articles are heavily edited. The main reason for anonymity, however, is a belief that what is written is more important than who writes it. As Geoffrey Crowther, editor from 1938 to 1956, put it, anonymity keeps the editor "not the master but the servant of something far greater than himself. You can call that ancestor-worship if you wish, but it gives to the paper an astonishing momentum of thought and principle."

Our Neanderthal Kin: Long thought to be extinct, Neanderthals live on inside many of us. A few percent of the DNA in Europeans, Asians, and other non-African groups is Neanderthal in origin, showing that at some point Neanderthals must have mated with modern humans. The Reproductive Revolution: The placenta common to most mammals, including humans, shares features with the genetic material in retroviruses. This suggests that millions of years ago infected embryonic cells changed the way that early mammals produced their offspring. The Origin of Clothing: By comparing the DNA of different species of lice, scientists have determined that human body lice, which live exclusively in clothing, evolved about 170,000 years ago, likely because humans had started covering their bodies with animal skins.

The Drama behind Great Discoveries
Assuming no prior background in science, these detailed but delightful lectures cover the fundamental properties of DNA, the techniques that have unraveled its mysteries, and the very human stories of the scientists who have pioneered the field, often winning Nobel Prizes and frequently sparking controversy.

It all started in the mid-19th century with a pair of discoveries that would not be united for almost a century. Austrian monk Gregor Mendel, working with pea plants, discovered that inheritance is governed by basic rules controlled by discrete units that came to be called genes. Meanwhile, Swiss biochemist Friedrich Miescher, studying the nuclei of cells, discovered a sticky substance later called deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA. Eventually, investigators suspected that genes were located on structures known as chromosomes that are visible in cell nuclei. Some speculated that genes might have something to do with Miescher's obscure molecule, after it was found in chromosomes and as the true size of DNA finally began to be understood.

From the mid-20th century, research moved at an accelerating pace, as you learn through a series of vignettes, including

Biology with a Blender: With the goal of identifying the genetic material once and for all, Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase ran a startling experiment involving viruses, radioactive tracer elements, and a kitchen blender. Their 1952 results proved that DNA is beyond doubt the agent of heredity. Deciphering DNA's Structure: The most famous race in the history of science pitted prominent researchers such as Linus Pauling, Rosalind Franklin, and Maurice Wilkins against a novice team composed of James Watson and Francis Crick. The goal: identify the structure of DNA and the secret of its genetic function. Mapping the Genome: After many breakthroughs, the big prize at the start of the 21st century was a complete record of the human genetic code, consisting of three billion base pairs. Two teams, led by Francis Collins and Craig Venter, competed aggressively and finished in a dead heat in the early 2000s.
Sam Kean tells these stories with lucid technical descriptions combined with a novelist's flair for capturing human drama. For example, his account of CRISPR-the genetic engineering technique that is currently transforming biology and medicine-takes you from a salt marsh in Spain, to an innovative yogurt plant in Wisconsin, to cutting-edge research labs throughout the world, where disinterested scientific inquiry has turned into a high-stakes race for a commercial bonanza.

Lucky Mutations and Other Stories
DNA also shapes human culture, as you learn in Lecture 6, where Mr. Kean recounts the curious case featured in the title of his 2012 bestseller The Violinist's Thumb. The thumb in question belonged to 19th-century violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini, who could twist and contort his digits in extreme ways, allowing him to perform musical fingerings that were beyond the abilities of his peers. Paganini almost surely had a genetic abnormality that would have been a drawback for most human activities, but made him a wild success as a violinist.

In the same way, other genetic anomalies have proved advantageous when the time was ripe

Digestion: The ability to break down lactose-milk sugar-mattered only to young children until humans became herders with ready access to animal milk products. At that point, a gene mutation that allowed adults to metabolize lactose spread widely through herding cultures because of the survival advantage it conferred. Language: Scientists have discovered that a gene universal among mammals that produces a language deficit when mutated in humans. Humans normally have a slightly different version of the gene compared to chimpanzees, suggesting that it plays a key role in language. Intelligence: Human intelligence is under control of a host of genes. For example, a slight shift in a DNA segment a few million years ago resulted in smaller jaw muscles in early humans. This led to thinner skulls, freeing up space for greater brain volume. Origins of the National Parks

Have you ever experienced anxiety? Of course you have. It's that uneasiness in your stomach as you walk into a job interview or the feeling of nervousness on a first date. And that's not necessarily a bad thing; numerous studies have shown that moderate anxiety enhances performance. But for millions of Americans, anxiety is persistent and excessive, and significantly impacts daily life. In fact, the National Institute of Mental Health reports that 31% of adults in the United States experience an anxiety disorder at some time in their lives.

It might be hard to believe today, but anxiety started out as positive trait-You could even say you owe your life to it. In the world of our early ancestors, the only people who stayed alive long enough to pass on their genes were the ones who assumed that what was bad was bad and that what was ambiguous was bad, also. Anxiety told them that, even though they couldn't see the bear right that minute, they had good reason to believe it was lurking nearby. Anxiety put your ancestors back in their cave, postponing hunting for another day. They were safe. Hungry? Maybe. But safe, definitely.

In the 12 fascinating and action-oriented lectures ofTreating Anxiety, Dr. Ellen Hendriksen will help you identify and understand the causes and symptoms of numerous anxiety disorders-from generalized anxiety disorder to social anxiety to panic. With a calm approach, and always supported by rigorous scientific studies, she will give you numerous tools and exercises you can employ immediately to help treat your own anxiety. Anatomy of an Anxious Moment: Building Interventions
Think about the most recent time you had an anxious moment. Maybe you felt a spike in your anxiety because you were stuck in traffic and late to pick up your child from college. Or maybe you're anxious about your finances now that your partner is between jobs. Whatever the cause of the anxiety, if you think about the moment in detail, you'll be able to break it down into three components

What Did You Feel in Your Body? Maybe your heart started racing, your stomach cramped up, or you broke out in a sweat.
What Were Your Thoughts at That Time? Try to remember what you said to yourself. Was your mind racing ahead to predict an awful outcome that you didn't know how to solve? Think about the images that went through your mind.
What Did You Do in the Moment Or Just Afterward? Did you send yourself voice messages, write notes even while you were driving, or turn up the volume on a playlist to distract yourself?
Every moment of anxiety has these same three basic components-physiology, thoughts, and behavior-no matter what type of anxiety you have. The great news about having identified these three components is that you now have three points of intervention.

In this course, you'll learn to calm your body with breathing techniques and grounding. You'll learn exercises to help you accept your thoughts for exactly what they are: not truth, but just thoughts. And you'll learn to act in accordance with your values rather than your fears.

Cross-Cutting Factors
In Treating Anxiety, you'll learn about the common themes that are found across all types of anxiety. Each anxiety disorder includes an element of

Perfectionism. This is a mindset that keeps you stuck in a cycle of over-evaluation and self-criticism that always leads to the same conclusion-You are never good enough and you never will be.
Self-Criticism. When our self-criticism loses its objectivity and becomes harsh, inflexible, and intensely personal, that's when it contributes to anxiety.
Indecision and Procrastination. Indecision is avoidance of uncertainty. And procrastination, although it's often labeled as a time-management problem, is actually the avoidance of negative emotions. Both characteristics lead to being stuck in a vicious cycle of anxiety.

Tools You Can Use
Each of the many, many anxiety-reducing tools Dr. Hendriksen teaches in this course falls into one of two buckets: change or acceptance. Many of the change tools come from a branch of psychotherapy called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT posits that if we can change how we think, we can change how we feel-including anxiety. Acceptance means realizing that a particular thought, feeling, or physiological sensation is part of the package deal of living a meaningful life. It is developing a willingness to experience the components of anxiety, while seeing those experiences as being separate from you. It definitely does not mean resignation and giving up feeling any differently than you feel now.

Among the many useful tools Dr. Hendricksen teaches, you will learn about

Cognitive Defusion. With this technique, you will cultivate the ability to observe your obsessions or frightening thoughts without getting tangled up in them. You will learn how to see them as thoughts, nothing more and nothing less. You'll practice imagining your thoughts as if they were background music playing at your favorite coffee shop. It's there, but you're not listening directly or getting involved.
Changing from Either/Or to Both/And. You will start by completing this sentence to describe yourself: "I am ____." But what happens when those labels become over-evaluation. If you fail a test, for example, your anxiety tells you to change "I am smart" to "I am stupid." But you can learn instead to know that both statements are true: "I am a smart person, and I didn't study enough for that test." After all, however we think of ourselves, life is unpredictable, and we will all make mistakes.
Slowing and Calming Your Physiology. While our respiratory system usually works unconsciously, we can access it directly and deliberately. Since all of our bodily systems want to work together, we can use breathing as a gateway to begin calming our other systems. In this course, you will learn the popular "4-7-8" breathing, box breathing, and several other calming techniques.
While this course gives you many tools for self-treating your anxiety, you might prefer working with a therapist one-on-one. Dr. Hendriksen provides guidance on how to locate one, giving you resources to find the right therapist for you. Also, in this course, a psychiatrist addresses questions about anti-anxiety medication. No matter which route is right for you, you will find calming support in Treating Anxiety.

In this series of tutorials, we will look at creating splashes and foam from a floating ship. Simulation, on the one hand, is rather banal. But it has a number of features. Much depends on the type of ship, the height of the waves, or simply on the director's vision - "I want a lot of foam and spray flying in all directions." Even in the same film, in neighboring scenes, you can see that the foam is different in its appearance - it all depends on the angle and distance of the camera, the composition of the picture. That is why it is important to know not only the process of creating foam, but also to control it as we / client need.

In addition, flip simulation itself is quite a resource-intensive process, especially if we are talking about a large distance of movement. Therefore, optimization will also be a significant part of these videos.

And, of course, we will not bypass the new features of Houdini version 19.5 - new possibilities for creating and configuring a container, collisions, camera optimization, upresing already finished simulation, Kelvin wakes and much more will be studied in these lessons.

Improvising on the guitar is based on a fundamental grasp of chords and scales, as the title of the course suggests. As the lessons unfold, you'll learn major, minor, seventh, dominant seventh, and diminished chords in different keys, and "power" chords for rock music, as well as the major and minor scales, blues scale, pentatonic (five-tone) scales, "modal" scales, and arpeggios (broken chords)-all of which will equip you to improvise in any style.

Guitar Skills

Enriching your left and right hand technique, you'll practice a range of key guitar skills, which will take your music-making in many exciting directions. Among these, you'll learn "Travis picking" for folk, country, and rock playing; tremolo, which gives the illusion of a sustained tone; legato techniques (called "hammer-ons" and "pull-offs") for shaping melodies; rasgueado, a dynamic flamenco strumming technique, harmonics (beautiful, bell-like guitar tones), barre technique (for "movable" chords), and how to accompany a vocalist.

Guitar Styles

Throughout the lessons, you'll learn the elements of many different musical styles. As key examples, you'll grasp the basics of jazz harmony, making use of your seventh chords and modal scales, blues, using the blues scale and licks, and you'll explore rhythm guitar, "piano-style" guitar, classical styles, Spanish flamenco, and others. Elements of Music Theory

"It is not only The Economist's name that people find baffling. Here are some other common questions.
First, why does it call itself a newspaper? Even when The Economist incorporated the Bankers' Gazette and Railway Monitor from 1845 to 1932, it also described itself as "a political, literary and general newspaper".
It still does so because, in addition to offering analysis and opinion, it tries in each issue to cover the main events-business and political-of the week. It goes to press on Thursdays and, printed simultaneously in six countries, is available in most of the world's main cities the following day or soon after. Readers everywhere get the same editorial matter. The advertisements differ. The running order of the sections, and sometimes the cover, also differ. But the words are the same, except that each week readers in Britain get a few extra pages devoted to British news.
Why is it anonymous? Many hands write The Economist, but it speaks with a collective voice. Leaders are discussed, often disputed, each week in meetings that are open to all members of the editorial staff. Journalists often co-operate on articles. And some articles are heavily edited. The main reason for anonymity, however, is a belief that what is written is more important than who writes it. As Geoffrey Crowther, editor from 1938 to 1956, put it, anonymity keeps the editor "not the master but the servant of something far greater than himself. You can call that ancestor-worship if you wish, but it gives to the paper an astonishing momentum of thought and principle."
