"It is not only The Economist's name that people find baffling. Here are some other common questions.
First, why does it call itself a newspaper? Even when The Economist incorporated the Bankers' Gazette and Railway Monitor from 1845 to 1932, it also described itself as "a political, literary and general newspaper".
It still does so because, in addition to offering analysis and opinion, it tries in each issue to cover the main events business and political of the week. It goes to press on Thursdays and, printed simultaneously in six countries, is available in most of the world's main cities the following day or soon after. Readers everywhere get the same editorial matter. The advertisements differ. The running order of the sections, and sometimes the cover, also differ. But the words are the same, except that each week readers in Britain get a few extra pages devoted to British news.
Why is it anonymous? Many hands write The Economist, but it speaks with a collective voice. Leaders are discussed, often disputed, each week in meetings that are open to all members of the editorial staff. Journalists often co-operate on articles. And some articles are heavily edited. The main reason for anonymity, however, is a belief that what is written is more important than who writes it. As Geoffrey Crowther, editor from 1938 to 1956, put it, anonymity keeps the editor "not the master but the servant of something far greater than himself. You can call that ancestor-worship if you wish, but it gives to the paper an astonishing momentum of thought and principle."

From the crowned heads of Europe to the lowliest serf, sex and its consequences affected everyone. After all, for people in the Middle Ages, sex could determine the fate of a kingdom and the state of your immortal soul. With so much on the line, is there any doubt that sex occupied the medieval mind and became a focal point of politics, literature, art, and so much more? This deep-seated preoccupation means that looking at the past through sex and sexuality opens doors into so many other dimensions of medieval life and offers a fresh new perspective on history beyond the big events and famous names we are familiar with.

From the Bible to the Bedroom

When you think of the Middle Ages, what first comes to mind? Perhaps it's the glorious cathedrals, the stunning art, or the courtly literature. Maybe you think of the political upheavals and religious transformations that so drastically shaped the era. For most of us, sex may be the last thing to come to mind when considering this period, and yet sex offers a spectacular lens through which to understand the ways medieval people thought and how they lived.

At its most basic, biological level, sex is the act necessary for procreation. There are myriad other reasons people engage in sex, but sex as the means to create life was a very popular topic of discussion in the Middle Ages. The medieval Church used the doctrine of Original Sin to transform a biological imperative into a moral one, proclaiming and enforcing the idea that sex is only permissible within marriage and to produce children.

With this in mind, Professor McNabb and her fellow experts begin their exploration of medieval notions of sex with a look at the Biblical narrative that set these rules in motion: the story of Adam and Eve. From this theological starting point, you'll see how sex and religion became so thoroughly intertwined throughout the Middle Ages, and beyond. But you'll also approach this perspective on history from a more practical vantage point as well, with a look at

Medical theories-some often quite inaccurate-involving sex, fertility, and desire;
Legal issues of sex and marriage in medieval society;
Harsh realities of single motherhood, sexual violence, and sex work;
Effects of class and gender on sexual behavior and expectations;
Politics of sex;
Ramifications of breaking sexual taboos; and more.
Since procreation was at the heart of medieval rules about sex, in the eyes of the Church, there was only one right way to have sex. That means there were a lot of "wrong" ways to indulge in sexual pleasure. With so many prohibitions and taboos, you'll find that many people were often breaking the rules; and yet, as you'll also discover, the severity of the punishments could vary greatly depending on who was breaking the rules and who was enforcing them.

Sex in Life and Literature

The Church's official positions on sex and sexuality may have been clear, but that doesn't mean there wasn't confusion and debate, even within the ranks of the clergy itself. Many scholars and theologians wrote about sex and sexuality, discussing the finer points of how consent, relationships, and sex "should" work, leaving us a rich trove of information regarding the everyday reality of medieval sexuality. And since the Church was the foremost authority on sex from a spiritual perspective, it also became the source of advice for those who struggled with various sexual and marital issues in ordinary life.

As Professor McNabb and our panel of experts reveal, many clergy and clerical lawyers became the medieval version of "sexperts," offering advice and guidance-although many of them took vows of lifetime celibacy. As the clergy were literate while most of the population was not, much of our information about medieval sex comes from the people who weren't supposed to be having it.

Documents from the clergy and church officials are certainly not the only sources that can illuminate the sexual customs and beliefs of the Middle Ages. The erotic and courtly literature of the time may not give us facts, but as your experts highlight, these works can give fascinating insights into the anxieties, desires, and questions that captivated medieval audiences. While medieval literature is known for its courtly tales of chivalry and romance, a much more risqué form of storytelling existed that defied the rigid and repressed image many of us have of the Middle Ages.

A New View of the Middle Ages

While it may seem that the rules for sex and marriage were clear throughout the centuries during the Middle Ages, the truth is that the rules were regularly challenged and debated. The complexity of human relationships and the evolution of Christian thinking, theology, and law meant that marriage was never fixed and unchanging. As in all times throughout history, a considerable gap existed between ideals and reality. It is in these gaps that we often find the most fascinating and illuminating parts of the past.

While sexual relationships-like all relationships-have likely been complicated since the earliest days of human culture, many of our long-held ideas about the moral and social dimensions of sex can be traced back to the Middle Ages. The medieval drive to govern and regulate human sexuality, sexual identity, and sexual behavior-even as constant pushback against the rules-has cast a long cultural shadow.

As Sex in the Middle Ages so thoroughly illuminates, although medieval people lived markedly different lives than we do, we share the common bonds of humanity, including sex and the societal complications that come with it.

Imagine What Could Have Been

As you'll learn, a well-constructed counterfactual is about more than flipping a switch or taking a guess. Historians look for moments of "contingency"-times when something unlikely happened or when events turned on a moment that could have gone either way. What happens when you take away favorable weather conditions or delay an event by 15 minutes?

The most famous battle in the American Civil War provides your first excellent counterfactual. Most history enthusiasts understand the Battle of Gettysburg as a turning point in the war, but relatively few people have considered the role of Little Round Top, an unfortified area of high ground the Confederates hoped would allow them to bombard the Union troops.

The Confederates were on their way to this perch when, by chance, a Union army engineer arrived to check a signal station, saw the rebel troops, and alerted the Union forces. What if this engineer had arrived 15 minutes later? Could the Confederates have won the battle? And if so, would the morale boost have enabled them to negotiate an end to the war?

Although we cannot know for certain, Professor Jortner and his colleagues present a plausible scenario for Confederate victory that would have created a world unrecognizable to us today. The United States, emancipation, and even all of world history hinged on one person's looking a certain direction, from a certain vantage, at a certain moment.

Throughout these lectures, you'll dig into many such moments of contingency. What if a bullet had missed? What if a scientist had not died in surgery? What if a few electorates had changed their votes? While history may feel inevitable, it's jaw-dropping to see how our story is constantly hanging by a thread-and it reminds us how important our own choices and decisions are, even today.

For example, the US Constitution was only ratified due to a few political tricks and a small handful of persuadable voters. In the wake of the Revolutionary War, the 13 colonies had just unseated a centralized power, so many were wary of establishing a new central government. The Constitution's passage may have depended on how one man scheduled the ratification convention in New Hampshire! Professor Jortner and his colleagues dig into the debates, compromises-and a few shenanigans-that would become the hallmark of the American experiment.

Astronomy: One of the most famous cases involving the sine and cosine functions that model periodic phenomena occurred in 1967, when astronomer Jocelyn Bell detected a radio signal from space at 1.3373-second intervals. It proved to be the first pulsar ever observed.
Acoustics: The special properties of an ellipse explain why a person standing at a given spot in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall can hear a whisper from someone standing 85 feet away.
Computer graphics: How do you make an object appear to rotate on a computer screen? Matrix algebra allows you to move each pixel in an image by a specified angle by multiplying two matrices together.

Is It Really God Versus Gods?

This course divides religion into monotheism (the belief in one god) and polytheism (the belief in many gods), but you don't have to investigate too deeply to discover the line between these belief systems is not a simple either/or.

Take Hinduism, for example, which is the largest polytheistic religion in the world today, with gods such as Vishnu, Shiva, and Lakshmi. However, digging into the faith, two things quickly become apparent. First, it might be more precise to talk about Hinduisms rather than one unified religion. Second, it's possible to view the many ***** deities as manifestations of one supreme creator. Therefore, is it even accurate to call Hinduism polytheistic?

The world of monotheism is equally muddled. When you delve into the sacred scriptures of Judaism and Christianity, for instance, you find instructions to worship the one God of Abraham-but other gods exist and should be turned away from as false gods. These monotheistic religions arose from a polytheistic world (as you will learn, the technical term is "henotheism").

Monotheism and polytheism are distinct ways of understanding the world-and the world(s) that may lie beyond-but they don't represent a clean dichotomy.

A World of Mystery

The word religion comes from a Latin word that means bond, referring to the bond that exists between a group of people and their god or gods. Whether we are talking about an ancient sky god or earth goddess, the pantheon of gods in Greece and Rome, or the single God of Abraham in Western faiths, there are many commonalities across religions.

One fascinating question is: How did humans begin to conceive of a god or gods in the first place? To search for answers, Professor Garland takes you back to the Epic of Gilgamesh, which includes the story of a flood much like you find in the Book of Genesis, as well as a profound meditation upon the inevitability of death. What caused the flood? What causes rain? Why is the world the way it is?

This course surveys the many ways religions have sought to answer these unanswerable questions, from the Egyptian pantheon of gods who were part animal-part human, to the various Greek gods bickering over human affairs from a lofty perch on Mount Olympus, to the Judeo-Christian conception of sin and morality.

Showing off the *****-Arabic system, which is based on 10 digits from zero to nine, he worked out various mathematical problems. One mathematical idea led to an intriguing sequence: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, and so on, where each number is the sum of the two previous numbers. Little did he suspect how powerful this "Fibonacci sequence" would be, with connections to many areas of nature and mathematics, including

"She Loves Me.": The number of petals on a flower tends to be a Fibonacci number. Lilies and irises: 3 petals. Buttercups, larkspurs, and columbines: 5 petals. Corn marigolds and black-eyed Susans: 13 petals. Some asters: 21 petals. Some daisies: 34, 55, or 89 petals. All Fibonacci numbers.
Euclid's Algorithm: Although the Greek mathematician Euclid long predated Fibonacci, his method for finding the greatest common divisor of two numbers has a fascinating connection to the Fibonacci sequence, where any two consecutive numbers always have a greatest common divisor of 1.
Golden Ratio: If you work your way through the Fibonacci sequence, taking the ratio of successive numbers, you get closer and closer to a value called phi, which is approximately 1.61803.... Not only does it show up in nature, but shapes with these proportions are aesthetically pleasing to the human eye.
These two related phenomena-the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio-appear in almost every branch of mathematics: geometry, calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, number theory, and probability, among others. Yet it takes little prior knowledge to generate and play with them, providing an endlessly entertaining way to experience a wide range of mathematical ideas.

Fibonacci Numbers and the Golden Ratio is your introduction to this compelling subject, taught by award-winning educator and "mathemagician" Professor Arthur T. Benjamin of Harvey Mudd College. In 12 engaging and insightful lectures, he presents proofs, puzzles, magic tricks, games, and more, all centered on the deceptively simple Fibonacci sequence and the equally elementary golden ratio.

It All Started with Two Rabbits

The problem that led Fibonacci to his famous sequence involved a pair of rabbits (male and female) and how their numbers accumulate under the following conditions. The rabbits take one month to mature, after which they produce another pair (male and female) and continue to do so every month. Their offspring have the same mating habits-one month to mature, then a male and female pair every month, thereafter. No rabbits ever die. How many pairs will there be after one month, two months, three months, and so on?

The answer is simplicity itself. The total number of pairs in any given month is the sum of the two preceding months: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144.. Voilà, the Fibonacci numbers!

Fibonacci himself was less interested in population growth than in the repeated application of a rule and the pattern that emerges. His pattern turned out to be very productive indeed, with connections that have multiplied like rabbits ever since

Pascal's Triangle: With deep connections to Fibonacci numbers, Pascal's triangle is constructed by creating a triangle of numbers with 1 at the apex, and each row beneath composed of numbers that are the sum of the two directly above. Empty spaces are counted as 0.
Zeckendorf's Theorem: Every positive integer can be uniquely represented as the sum of nonconsecutive Fibonacci numbers. For example, 100 = 89 + 8 + 3, with everything to the right of the equal sign a Fibonacci number. The efficient way to do this is by means of a so-called "greedy" algorithm.
Binet Formula: Suppose you want to know the one-millionth Fibonacci number, or any other value in the sequence? Jacques Philippe Marie Binet wrote a formula using the golden ratio that allows you to easily calculate the answer without having to compute every previous number.
The Irrational Golden Ratio

The golden ratio, or phi, is just as ubiquitous as the Fibonacci sequence. Phi is an irrational number (meaning it can't be expressed as a fraction of two integers), and it can be produced independently by a wide variety of formulas across different areas of mathematics. It most famously appears as the ratio of the sides of a rectangle that is widely regarded as the most visually pleasing of all quadrilaterals. This subjective aspect makes phi renowned among non-mathematicians, including artists, architects, best-selling novelists, and even financiers. Professor Benjamin discusses where some of these enthusiasts go overboard in seeing phi where it probably isn't. He also goes deeply into genuine phenomena involving phi, such as

Sunflower Spirals: Evolution has hit on the most efficient way to pack seeds onto a sunflower. As seeds grow one at a time from the center of the flower, they are pushed aside at an angle related to phi, resulting in a series of tightly spaced spirals.
Foliage: Plants love phi-the most irrational of irrational numbers-since leaves have maximum exposure to sunlight if they don't sprout at regular intervals on a stalk. By contrast, if they repeat at whole number fractions, they stack atop each other.
Kepler's Triangle: Astronomer Johannes Kepler was obsessed with the golden ratio and the Pythagorean theorem (which governs right triangles). He showed that it's possible to construct a right triangle in which two sides are in a simple relation to phi.
Throughout Fibonacci Numbers and the Golden Ratio, Professor Benjamin guides you through the logical steps that lead to remarkable insights about these numbers. "I don't want to just present you with amazing facts; I want you to actually appreciate the reasons behind these amazing patterns," he says.

Luckily, he has an infectious enthusiasm for proofs, which are the cornerstone of mathematics, without which the elaborate structure of the discipline would collapse. "Why do these numbers have all of the amazing properties we have seen, and why do they appear so often in nature?" he asks. To get to the answers, he provides the conceptual tools that "allow us to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the patterns that we have seen through just a handful of examples, will be true forever.

"And I assure you," Professor Benjamin beams, "that when the lightbulb goes on and everything makes sense, it is an amazing feeling!"
