TTC - Written Communications: Being Heard and Understood
Last updated 1/2024

Genre: eLearning | Language: English | Duration: 12 Lessons ( 6h 25m ) | Size: 5.3 GB

We've all encountered bad writing at some point in our lives. We've possibly even authored some ourselves. And it's pretty clear when writing is bad. Whether you're writing business letters, memos, emails, reports, announcements, or some other professional communication, the pragmatic communicator can be far more effective than the multiloquent one.

Because we are judged by our ability to communicate with direction, focus, and confidence-along with inspiration and empathy, no matter who you are and what your goal is-getting the right message across is absolutely essential to achieving your objectives.
In the 12 rewarding lectures of Written Communications: Being Heard and Understood, Professor Allison Friederichs, Associate Teaching Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Denver, University College, will share the secrets to sharpening your written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills. She will show you how impactful communication isn't really about you: It's about your reader. Once you understand your audience, she'll show you how to target the message, make appropriate word choices, incorporate sound logic, and untangle complex syntax using a combination of examples and activities.
Words Matter
People use words all the time, every single day, mostly without giving them much thought at all. But when you are writing words, you lose the context of vocal intonation, facial expression, and delivery. Your reader has to infer your intent and meaning and can only do so by the words you use. This ability to choose the right language is important because words are the most basic building blocks of communication. With two lectures of this series devoted to language and words, Professor Friederichs will provide you with exercises and toolkits for picking the right words every time. Consider "The Four C's," a framework that suggests your chosen words should be
Correct. It's important to use the correct word. People don't always do this. Malapropisms are an example. They occur when a person uses a word that sounds like the word they mean but isn't quite correct. Yogi Berra was famous for this; for example, he once said, "Texas gets a lot of electrical votes." (He meant electoral votes.)
Concrete. One of the best ways to choose the right word is to understand the difference between concrete and abstract word choices. Choosing a concrete word means picking one with less possible variance in the connotative meaning. For example, if a person says, "I just heard my dog bark," it's fairly obvious that he or she is referring to the sound a dog makes rather than the exterior of a tree.
Clear. This speaks to ensuring clarity. There are three things to keep in mind to help you write clearly: writing concisely, avoiding redundancy, and avoiding jargon.
Contextually appropriate. If you don't consider choosing the right word for the particular context, the risks can be much greater than misunderstanding. The wrong choice can have a profound impact on your professional relationships. When you write, you should place yourself in the context in which your message will be read, not the context in which it is written.
Professor Friederichs will also provide a deep dive into the intrinsic relationship between language and culture, considering an age-old issue about the nature of language, including the descriptive/prescriptive debate, as well as the two levels of meaning every word has: denotation and connotation. You'll discover how meaning is culturally constructed and how meanings of words can shift across times and cultures.
The Misunderstood World of Punctuation
Once you've equipped yourself with the tools and skills to pick the right words, you need to present them in a professional and competent manner. Grammar and punctuation are challenging but important facets of writing. Nothing undermines your message more than the incorrect usage of a word, but even if you use the word properly, incorrect grammar and punctuation can change the entire meaning.
Professor Friederichs dedicates three lectures to ensuring you get it right, starting with the most commonly misunderstood rules of punctuation, such as issues around commas, semicolons, quotation marks, and dashes, as applied to Edited Standard American English. You'll master noun and proper noun grammar rules such as when to capitalize, how to recognize pronoun case-possessive, subjective, and objective-how to spot misplaced and dangling modifiers, and how to untangle the often-confusing use of apostrophes. From there, you'll cover the more complex world of verb and adverb usage-looking at passive and active voices, tense, and mood.
You may have bad memories of diagramming sentences for hours on end in grade college or getting otherwise grade "A" papers back with lower marks due to punctuation and spelling mistakes. Professor Friederichs's manner and delivery will help you overcome any bad feelings you've harbored about grammar. She makes each of these lessons a delight, bringing plenty of humor and enthusiasm to explain the context for some of the rules that feel particularly arbitrary. With plenty of examples that make it easy to remember these often-confusing grammar rules, you'll gain helpful tips to ensure your writing is always effective.
Get Writing Right
The last half of this illuminating course spotlights how to improve your overall message by changing your writing lens to focus on your audience. Most people typically don't take the time to consider their message when they sit down at a keyboard, but Professor Friederichs demonstrates why you must conduct an analysis about what you are about to write before you even hit the first key-and she shows you how.
Professor Friederichs adds another useful tool to your collection with the business-writing process called ACE, which stands for Analyze, Craft, and Edit. For each of these steps, Professor Friederichs provides a helpful checklist that you can refer to each time you sit down to write.
Analyze: Professor Friederichs provides the Analyze Checklist to help you to consider your purpose, your audience, what your purpose statement will look like, and the relevant facts that will be involved. It also provides you with an opportunity to develop an outline of ideas. The analysis stage will save you time by helping you craft strong documents from the start.
Craft: You'll quickly see how the Craft Checklist is immensely useful as you work through writing your purpose statement, introduction, body, and conclusion. Professor Friederichs also outlines eight additional best practices that will help you craft a well-written draft.
Edit: Here is your chance to analyze your document with a reader-centric lens to ensure it says what you want it to say, in an organized, clear, and concise manner. While you are not proofreading your document at this point, the Editing Checklist helps you review organization, proper word choice, clarity and concision, punctuation, and grammar.
Along with activities to help you put this process into practice, you'll soon learn how the ACE process can be an instrumental habit to implement every time you write a professional communication.
The concluding lectures take you through the final steps of the process. They also provide you with valuable techniques for overall writing practices, such as developing your professional writing voice, building or using a style guide, and building strong relationships through your writing. From how to write a subject line for an email to the best choices for a greeting and an ending, Professor Friederichs covers every step of executing successfully written communications with helpful advice, tips, and tools, all geared to help you become a better writer, in any situation.

TTC - Your Best Brain
Last updated 12/2023
MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch
Genre: eLearning | Language: English | Duration: 24 Lessons ( 12h 50m ) | Size: 10.6 GB

The human brain is the most complex object in the known universe. This amazing organ has unique powers to make predictions about the future, form relationships with other people, adapt to rapidly changing circumstances, and much, much more.

But how does the brain accomplish these astonishing feats? We all have a basic conception of our brain's role in consciousness, memory, emotion, attention, creativity, and so forth. But what exactly goes on in the brain to make these things happen? And-even more intriguing-what happens when the intricate systems in the brain are not functioning as they should?
In Your Best Brain, Professor Medina walks you through the latest, peer-reviewed neuroscience research in an attempt to shed light on the mysterious world inside your head. Explore what science has discovered about
Memory: Although we tend think of memory systems like hard drives in computers, there are actually many memory systems, and they are nothing like computer hard drives. You'll see exactly how your brain remembers details and events... and the surprising reason it forgets about them all.
Senses: Between your senses-like sight and smell-and your perception of those senses sit powerful processing and interpretative filtering systems. You'll uncover how the brain translates cues from the environment to create what we perceive as reality.
Emotions: Fear. Excitement. Happiness. Grief. Anger. From where do all these emotions come? You'll explore how the brain generates and uses emotions to connect with others, as well as to direct your attention to what's important.
Creativity: Brain scientists don't really know what "creativity" is, but the cognitive gadget that may come closest to describing it is something called "cognitive disinhibition". This is a process where the brain stubbornly refuses to rule out information that on the surface seems irrelevant to the task at hand. This fluidity of thought allows for staggering innovation-for example, the production of a designer fabric from discarded sour milk.
Tour the Five Key Aspects of the Brain
The first functional map of the cerebral cortex sprang from research done during the two World Wars. When scientists studied soldiers who sustained shrapnel wounds to the head, an examination of each soldier's lost-or in some cases, gained-functions told the researchers what the affected cortical region did. Since then, the field of neuroscience has been in a near constant state of disruptive transformation as researchers and doctors continue to discover revolutionary truths about our brains.
In 24 exciting lectures, Professor Medina will lead you on a spirited tour of five key aspects of this lively revolution
The Evolving Brain: Killer whales are smart, but they don't write novels. Crows are smart, but they can't design microchips. The evolution of the human brain ensured that we not only survived, we actually conquered the world. You'll examine the physical structure and function of the brain and how it enabled a comparatively weak species to become the planet's apex predator.
The Learning Brain: We survived by being the smartest. But what does it mean to be smart? Take a scientific look into what it means to be intelligent, and uncover the sophisticated way your brain processes and analyzes information about the world around you.
The Feeling Brain: Being able to form relationships and societies gave humans a massive survival advantage. Central to that is our ability to imagine how others are thinking and feeling. Investigate the subtle nuances between emotions and feelings, how they occur on a biological level, and their role in forming and sustaining connections with others.
The Developing Brain: The first three sections of this course describe the fully developed brain. But how does it get that way? Peer into the development process of the brain-from the early years as an infant, to the turbulent teenage period, to how we age in later life.
The Optimized Brain: Wrap up this cerebral tour with an answer to the big question-how do you optimize your brain's processing performance? Find out what science has to say about the role of sleep, exercise, and more in ensuring that the brain performs at its very best. You'll learn practical, research-backed exercises and tips that you can apply in your life right away.
Optimize Your Brain
A generation ago, we were barely able to map the regions of cerebral cortex. Thanks to rapid advances in technology and in our understanding of the brain, today's neuroscience research goes far beyond trying to understand how the brain works, and into the search for proven ways to optimize brain performance. You'll learn science-backed strategies for improving your memory, boosting your creativity, and keeping your brain healthy. Examples include
How a simple exercise-created by a leading neuroscientist-can make you more creative. It's as easy as washing your hands!
A practical, three-step guide to remembering nearly anything by tapping into your brain's deep integration with your senses.
A method for getting rid of bad habits by hacking the brain's internal "pleasure process" to replace a negative habit with a positive one.
A simple stress-reduction technique that researchers suggest can boost the effectiveness of therapy by over 60%.
Seven tips for parenting and supporting teenagers... even when they're moody.
One critical activity that research suggests will keep your mind sharp as you age.
Best of all, each practical example included in this course is grounded in scientific research. You'll be investing your time in worthwhile activities that are proven to show results, rather than trusting untested anecdotes and questionable theories whose effectiveness has not been verified.
A Vast and Complex Science Made Clear
From the very first lecture, you'll see just how far-reaching and remarkable the science of the brain is. But while the subject is complex, that doesn't mean that it's difficult to understand.
Professor Medina is an award-winning molecular biologist at the University of Washington. His research background firmly grounds each lecture in the science. And, as a New York Times best-selling author and leading advocate for brain research, Professor Medina also has a unique ability to translate and communicate the great complexity of the brain in an understandable way to any student motivated to learn.
Yet most of all, the professor brings a deep passion for neuroscience and how knowledge about how our brain works can positively affect our daily lives. His enthusiasm and sense of wonder are clear throughout the course, and each lecture is filled with helpful metaphors, remarkable case studies, and intriguing-and at times, very amusing-ties to popular culture.
You'll walk away from the course with a greater understanding of just what happens inside your head, and what you can do to ensure that your brain performs at the highest levels possible for years to come.

TTC - How Memory Works and Why Your Brain Remembers Wrong
Released 1/2024
MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch
Genre: eLearning | Language: English | Duration: 12 Lessons ( 5h 51m ) | Size: 4.87 GB
"Who are you?" Chances are you'd answer this question by describing the highlights of your personality, interests, and life experiences. But if you'd been asked this same question yesterday, you might have responded with a slightly different description. Does that mean you are a particular person today but were a different person yesterday? And what about tomorrow?
Welcome to the slippery, shape-shifting nature of memory. As Professor Gabrielle Principe reveals in How Memory Works and Why Your Brain Remembers Wrong, "you" are the conglomeration of the often-unreliable information your brain decides to feed you at any given moment.
Over the course of these 12 fascinating lectures, you'll come to understand why everything you experience in this life is an illusion-nothing more and nothing less than an interpretation of signals received, assembled, and reassembled over and over, and over again, by your brain. This might sound like the plot of a sci-fi thriller or a terrifying novel. But the pliability-and even unreliability-of your memory is no accident. Six hundred million years of evolution have brought you what you have today: the best memory for Homo sapiens. Yes, you hate it when you can't remember where you put your car keys. But through this course, you'll come to realize that each of the obvious negatives of your memory has a flip side that supports your ability to survive and thrive.
How Does Your Memory Go Wrong?
Many of us imagine our brains as video cameras, recording exactly what is seen and heard in its environment. That "video" is then labeled with a date and time and stored at a specific address in the brain-to be summoned and played back as a memory whenever you'd like. But that "video" concept is nothing like your real memory. Your life is a big stew of stimuli constantly bombarding your senses, a stew that your brain turns into a seamless story of experience that makes sense. Our memories, and our lives, are the stories our brains make up for us. Far from being a recording device, memory is a process.
But sometimes our memories omit things that clearly happened, serve up recollections that don't square with the facts we previously experienced, or even manufacture events that never happened at all. What causes these issues that can result in such frustration?
In How Memory Works and Why Your Brain Remembers Wrong, Professor Principe explains three main causes of what we perceive to be memory "glitches"
We miss most of what goes on around us. Whenever we experience any event or phenomenon, we miss almost everything happening inside our bodies, most of what is happening in the distance, and even most of the things going on directly in front of us.
Only a fraction of what gets into our memories is retained. Most of it fades or decays-some instantly and some later. But once it's gone, it's gone for good. And even among those memories that do make it in and stay, some become difficult or even impossible to retrieve.
When we recall a memory, we don't retrieve the original information. We retrieve the fragments of fragments that remain, trying to reconstruct the totality of an experience. We are also prone to incorporate fragments that weren't even part of the original event.
The Real Problem of False Memories
While seeing can be believing, seeing also can be constructed completely inside our heads. You've probably experienced this phenomenon quite frequently.
For example, consider the last time you misplaced your phone. You can see it right there on your desk where you're so sure you placed it, and you have no memory of having tossed it on your bed an hour earlier. In this everyday example, you pick up your phone and go on about your business. But constructed, repressed, or false memories can be dangerous and life-altering. In fact, mistaken eyewitness identification is the number-one cause of wrongful convictions overturned by DNA evidence in the United States.
Adults and children both can create false memories, especially when they are pressured to come to a specific conclusion-whether by parents or by the detective who has a legal right to lie to the individual they're interrogating. In How Memory Works and Why Your Brain
Remembers Wrong, you'll hear about
The infamous case of precollege teacher Margaret Kelly Michaels. After Michaels spent five years in prison for child abuse, her case was overturned when it became clear that all allegations of abuse were made only after the children had been relentlessly questioned by security officer interviewers who believed that Michaels was guilty.
The case of Layla and the rabbit. Using research carried out by Professor Principe in a memory experiment, you'll investigate how parents' beliefs can shape the way they question their children and consequently mold children's memories. You'll hear about 4-year-old Layla, whose account of a rabbit loose in her college was entertaining, highly detailed, and coherent-and completely untrue.
The case of Marty Tankleff, a teenager whose parents had been brutally stabbed in their own home. For a variety of reasons that you'll learn about, Marty confessed to a crime he had not committed and spent 17 years in prison before being exonerated.
The Flip Side of Our Memory "Problems"
Our brains are crafted from the same types of cells that made up the very first simple nervous systems about 600 million years ago-neurons. And in those intervening years, evolution has not changed the neuron itself much at all. What has evolved is a Homo sapiens brain with 86 billion neurons, each of which is connected to about 5,000 other neurons. It's this massively complex system of 430 trillion connections that supports complex human behavior-including human memory.
In How Memory Works and Why Your Brain Remembers Wrong, you'll learn that each of our memory "problems," actually, provides our species a pathway to survival and complex problem-solving. For example
Forgetting helps make our cognition efficient and orderly. One of the most important functions of our memory is to help us understand the present and make predictions about the future. Remembering every detail of every experience would prevent us from generalizing for new situations.
Forgetting guards our emotional health and sense of self. Most people selectively forget negative experiences. That emphasis on the positive gives us a strong concept of ourselves and what we think we'll be capable of in the future.
Forgetting fosters creativity. Forgetting allows us to let go of old memories, creating a space for new representations to form. If we kept every minute detail in our memory of how we did a particular activity, we wouldn't be able to "think outside the box"-which is so important for our growth as individuals and as our human community.
While we're all frustrated by our memory from time to time, it's exactly the malleability of it that makes us human. If our memories did record and play back every bit of the reality around us, we would be completely overwhelmed-and have a brain that was too big to hold up at the dinner table. With How Memory Works and Why Your Brain Remembers Wrong, you will gain a greater appreciation for what you have, and what you sometimes forget, and the insights you're sure to remember.
What Will You Learn?
Explore how your memories are influenced by your mood, context, and more
Examine how false memories can be implanted in children and adults
Discover why your brain can't possibly remember everything

TTC - A Children's Guide to Folklore and Wonder Tales

"Once upon a time." Those four words bring us comfort, joy, and hope, as they start a plethora of stories that often end with "happily ever after."
"Once upon a time." Those four words bring us comfort, joy, and hope, as they start a plethora of stories that often end with "happily ever after." We carry these stories in our hearts like dear old friends, turning to them for inspiration, courage, and entertainment-much in the same way as those who originally told them used them to pass the time and share lessons among family and friends. However, the stories we know now are not always the same ones that were told centuries ago, and were not always told for the same reasons.
Throughout this unique course, Dr. Hannah Blevins Harvey, a professional storyteller with a Ph.D. in Communication Studies, treats you to dynamic, theatrical, and engaging tellings of cherished tales from around the world. Join a mixed-age audience to hear many of your favorite and beloved childhood tales performed by an award-winning storyteller against a storybook-like backdrop as The Great Courses studio is transformed into magical settings. Additionally, you will be introduced to lesser-known stories as you take a cultural tour through ancient and contemporary time, as well as around the world, with stops in Greece, Egypt, Iran, India, Kenya, Japan, Russia, the Nordic countries, the Philippines, Australia, France, Italy, Scotland, Germany and more.
As a special bonus, Dr. Harvey also provides an exploration of the themes, questions, and evolutions for these stories, providing you and the children in your life with an intellectual perspective to think about and discuss.
Dr. Harvey unpacks more than 60 of our most beloved stories, fables, fairy tales, and songs from around the world-providing you with a fascinating, in-depth view into the history, context, and deeper meaning of the tales we know and love. As you travel through the catalogs of Grimm, Aesop, Hans Christian Anderson, Charles Perrault, Oscar Wilde, and so many more, you'll gain profound insights into how and why these stories came to be. And these stories are more than "just stories"-they're a powerful tool of folk culture. Folk stories are the wells into which we humans pour our deepest anxieties, our desires, our hopes-and problematic as they sometimes are, these stories continue to deeply resonate with us throughout our lives.
Why Tales Matter
"It's been said that fairy tales are like the subconscious dreams of a culture-in them wells up all the desires, and anxieties, and experiences of cultural life. In these stories, all of the characters represent us, different aspects of ourselves," claims Dr. Harvey.
Tales use powerful symbols to help us articulate our daily struggles, understand major life events, envision roles for ourselves, and interpret the world around us. As Dr. Harvey tells some of these tales to audiences (children from elementary and middle college and the adults in their lives), you will actually see how shared stories-wonder tales, fables, pourquoi stories, fairy tales, and magic tales-can draw a circle around listeners of all ages. You'll understand how hearing stories in person can pull us closer to shared meanings, and to each other, too. The tales of our youth shaped us, and their lasting power will shape the children you share them with.
Just as important is that stories transport us into another world of fantasy and wonder-where characters do things we can't do here. The words "once upon a time" transport us into "story time"-this is a "play" world, where there are rules, and yet anything can happen. In this "play" world we "work" out a lot of very genuine issues; we discover and try out roles, and discover the ingrained truths that we carry with us throughout our lives. Fantasy matters to us because the deep work of imagining possibilities happens here.
Supplementing the stories and insights provided by Dr. Harvey, child psychiatrist Dr. Zheala Qayyum, from Yale University's Medical college and Department of Psychiatry, weighs in about the importance of stories, folktales, and imagination-building exercise in the healthy development of children, no matter where they live.
Untelling Our Favorite Tales
If you think you know the classic stories such as "Sleeping Beauty," "Cinderella," and "Hansel and Gretel," then think again. This course provides you with illuminating surprises about how culture, language, and time have evolved folktales into the definitive versions you grew up with. "Stories are a lot like humans-we and they have to adapt to our circumstances, or we die," Dr. Harvey explains.
In some cases, stories adapt to the location and cultures where they are being told, while still sharing the same motifs, plots, and lessons. Consider our beloved tale of "The Gingerbread Man": In Norway and Germany the animated edible creature is a pancake-and the pancake runs away down the lane. In Scotland, it's a "wee bannock"-or a roll. In Ireland, it's a little cake. And in Russia, the story is about a loaf of bread that is possessed by a devil.
In other cases, time, translation, and the storyteller will make deliberate shifts in the premise of our well-known stories. Take a deeper look at "Cinderella," one of the world's oldest "magic tales," dating back 7000 years, with Mah Pishani being one of the oldest versions. Dr. Harvey examines the many different versions of just this one story
The French version of "Cinderella" by Charles Perrault is the one we are most familiar with in America. It is this version that introduces readers to the iconic glass slipper, which was not a component in earlier versions. In many other versions, the shoe is not a shoe at all, but a ring or some other object that the girl must fit into.
In Italy, the glass slipper is made of cork. It's also not a slipper, it's a chianiello-a special kind of courtly overshoe that well-to-do women wore to keep the mud off their nice shoes.
In other versions of the story, the evil sisters cut off their heels and toes to try to fit into the shoe-and they and the stepmother are rewarded for their treachery by being chased and pecked by crows in the end!
As you follow this one story from continent to continent, you also gain insights into the of significance of adding the glass slipper-a highly impractical yet ornamental detail that shaped the version of Cinderella we know. As she unpacks the meaning behind these symbols, Dr. Harvey introduces you to some amazing facts such as the speculation that Perrault got his source's story wrong about the glass slipper. The French word for glass (verre) sounds and is spelled similarly to the French word for squirrel fur (vair), and some say he confused the two words! So, perhaps the French Cinderella should have worn a squirrel-fur boot!
Shared Themes and Motifs Around the World of Stories
Folklorists have found that the same story themes with the same "motifs," or story parts, recur across cultures and across time. A system of classification was developed first by Finnish folklorist Antti Aarne in 1910, then refined by American folklorist Stith Thompson in 1928, and then further refined and diversified in 2004 to include stories beyond the European canon, by German folklorist Hans-Jörg Uther. For example: The Aarne-Thompson-Uther classification system (or ATU system) groups all Sleeping Beauties under tale type 410, and there are at least 22 different versions of this story across the world that resemble this tale type!
Some common themes across time and culture include
Transformations: As the folk saying goes, "heroes are not born, they are made." As examined in stories such as "Beauty and the Beast," "East of the Sun and West of the Moon," and more, you'll examine the theme of change and how it's utilized in stories around the world to teach important rites of passage.
Explanations: Every culture has come up with its own stories to explain the hows and whys of life around us. Pourquoi tales are often about the natural world and explain how and why. Explore the whys in stories by Aesop and Kipling.
Good and Evil: In some tales, the distinction between good and evil is clear-or is it? Stories such as "The Brave Little Tailor" and "David and Goliath" demonstrate how even small characters, when good, can defeat evil giants. Dr. Harvey shows how even ancient tales challenged the use of "good" and "evil" as definitive traits by introducing you to characters such as Baba Yaga-an ambiguous character who defies classification. Baba Yaga stories connect back to Neolithic cultures who worshiped the Mother Goddess- a representation of both life and death (like a feminine Shiva in ***** cultures).
Rise Stories: These rags-to-riches stories provide hope for change, showing a character move above their circumstances through luck, skill, or magic. "Cinderella" and "Puss in Boots" are two examples where someone utterly common is transformed into someone special.
Through time and across cultures, our stories resonate deeply with us all throughout our lives.
These tales use powerful symbols to help us articulate our daily struggles, understand major life events, envision roles for ourselves, and interpret the world around us.
Join us to discover a collection of stories that will lift your heart, haunt your dreams, and challenge your expectations.

When most of us think of the ancient Roman world, we don't think about the scholarship of hard-working historians or the discoveries of patient archaeologists. We think, first and foremost, of what we've seen at the movies.

From the sword-and-sandal epics of the 1950s to the resurgence of grittier stories in the 21st century, cinema has exerted an undeniable power over our cultural understanding of ancient Rome. The iconography is always fresh in our minds: gladiatorial battles and chariot races, defiant slaves and nefarious emperors, magnificent public structures and white toga costumes. But just because these and other sights are popular in movies doesn't mean they should always be taken as historical fact.
What would an award-winning historian think of films like Ben-Hur, Spartacus, Gladiator, or even a satire like Monty Python's Life of Brian? How have these and other movies created our popular perceptions of ancient Roman history-and in what ways have they led us astray? And why, despite the occasional box-office flop, do movies set in ancient Rome still have the power to captivate us, and to turn each of us into theater-going history buffs?
In A Historian Goes to the Movies: Ancient Rome, Professor Gregory S. Aldrete uses his prolific scholarship to give you a front-row look at the great movies that have shaped ancient Rome's role in popular culture and memory. Packed with insights into both history and filmmaking, these 12 lectures immerse you in the glory and grandeur (and, sometimes, the folly) of classic and contemporary films featuring over 50 years of cinematic talent, including directors like Stanley Kubrick, Federico Fellini, and Ridley Scott, and actors such as Charlton Heston, Rex Harrison, Elizabeth Taylor, Patrick Stewart, and Russell Crowe. You'll investigate portrayals of ancient Roman life on the big screen and small screen; learn how to tease out fact from fiction in some of Hollywood's most stunning spectacles; and deepen your appreciation for films that, when made right, are thrilling time machines into the past.
Survey Landmark Film and TV
For A Historian Goes to the Movies: Ancient Rome, Professor Aldrete has assembled 13 of what he and many other film buffs consider to be the most important films set in ancient Rome. These are movies we remember for their performances, their costumes and set designs, and the ways they influenced the movies made in their wake. A few of the features you will explore include
Quo Vadis: This high-profile 1951 film, starring Peter Ustinov as the tyrannical emperor Nero and Deborah Kerr as a virtuous young Christian girl, established a successful (and lucrative) template for movies about classical antiquity and the early Christian world, and sparked a cultural fire for sword-and-sandal flicks.
I, Claudius: Based on two novels by Robert Graves, this BBC miniseries tracks the intimate lives of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, which includes the emperors Claudius, Caligula, and Tiberius. The show also captured the attention of a second group of viewers: those obsessed with England's royal family.
Fellini Satyricon: Italian director Federico Fellini's experimental film, based on the ancient novel Satyricon by Petronius, was very much a product of the cinematic and social revolutions of the 1960s-both of which left an indelible mark on this picaresque story of a pleasure-seeking young Roman man.
Gladiator: Essentially a remake of the 1964 film, The Fall of the Roman Empire, Ridley Scott's blockbuster film from 2000 was a commercial and cultural triumph that snagged Academy Awards, spawned memorable catchphrases, and inspired a host of new sword-and-sandal epics in the subsequent decade, including Troy and 300.
Some films you may already be a fan of; other films you might have only heard of in passing. But all of them are essential to a well-rounded understanding of the intricate relationship between the world of ancient Rome and the world of the movies.
Walk the Line between Truth and Fiction
A scholar who's spent his entire career immersed in the history of the ancient Roman world (from ancient body armor to everyday life), Professor Aldrete reveals the historical accuracies and inaccuracies of the ancient Roman world depicted in these films. When filmmakers seemingly got certain aspects of history wrong, Professor Aldrete provides a window into how and why the creators made certain decisions and navigated the tenuous line between truth and entertainment. For example, you'll discover that
Ben-Hur's naval battle, while a reasonable depiction of naval warfare in the ancient Roman world, nevertheless, depicts the oarsmen of the warships as slaves (they weren't) and being sent to the galleys as punishment (it wasn't);
Spartacus misrepresents the title character's historical legacy by depicting his revolt as a growing movement challenging slavery, when in reality, it marked the end of popular opposition to the institution;
I, Claudius portrays the character of Livia as a mass murderer who kills multiple members of her own family to clear the way for her son, Tiberius-a notion that has been proven to likely be false, and can be traced to a specific ancient historian, Cassius Dio.
Gladiator uses the familiar "thumbs down" gesture to indicate a defeated gladiator should be killed, whereas, recent scholarship has revealed this gesture was most likely a way of calling for the victor to drop his weapon and spare his enemy;
HBO's Rome gets many things right about everyday life in ancient Rome, including two characteristics of Roman religion-that it's a component of nearly all facets of life and that individuals differ in their degrees of belief; and
Fellini Satyricon, despite its surreal components, depicts a marriage ceremony accurately by dressing the bride with an orange veil and having the guests throw nuts at the couple and shout "feliciter" in congratulations.
Go behind the Scenes of Cinematic Classics
Along with a revealing look at ancient history, these lectures also examine the art and craft of big-budget filmmaking. A Historian Goes to the Movies: Ancient Rome takes you behind the scenes to reveal how iconic films can be made-or unmade-by everything from clashes between directors and actors to out-of-control budgets.
For example, you'll learn how
Early epics like Ben-Hur couldn't rely on the luxury of computer-generated effects and, therefore, had to construct impressive, full-sized replicas of ancient Roman sites like the Forum or the Circus Maximus;
Fall of the Roman Empire was the true box-office bomb that tanked the sword-and-sandals genre for decades (not Cleopatra, as popularly believed); and
Creative differences between a historical consultant and the producers of Gladiator reflect the way filmmakers ditch historical accuracy for the sake of drama.
Professor Aldrete also highlights profound connections between these films and the wider historical culture in which they first appeared. Quo Vadis, for example, made only a few years after the end of World War II, noticeably portrays the Romans as mirror images of the Nazis. And Spartacus, despite its message of freedom, became the target of McCarthy-era conservative and religious groups who condemned it for being anti-American.
A Guide for Tomorrow's Great Films
Of course, the end of this exciting lecture series doesn't mean there isn't more to come. Roman history continues to inspire new cinematic depictions, and A Historian Goes to the Movies: Ancient Rome is a welcome guide to settings, themes, and "bread-and-circus" plots that popular culture just can't let go of.
Professor Aldrete's lectures leave you excited about how tomorrow's movies will depict the ancient world-and eager to discover what those creative works will reveal about both the past and the times in which they're made.
What Will You Learn?
Draw fascinating (and surprising) connections between films set in ancient Rome and science fiction films.
Explore two big-budget film takes on the mysterious legend of ancient Rome's "lost legion."
Dispel the myth of lively recreational drug use in ancient Rome and Egypt presented by HBO's Rome series.

TTC - Gut Health Explained
Released 4/2024
MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch
Genre: eLearning | Language: English | Duration: 12 Lessons ( 4h 28m ) | Size: 3.71 GB
Ads for probiotic supplements are everywhere you turn these days, and they promise you everything under the sun. They will balance your "good" and "bad" gut bacteria, improve depression or anxiety, help you lose weight, reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol-the list goes on. Are all these claims true? Are some of them true? Are any of them based on rigorous scientific inquiry?
The money spent on marketing probiotics, the number of individuals using them, and the technology to better understand the human microbiome have all increased dramatically in the 21st century. What an exciting time for research and a hopeful era for new ways to cure disease. But, as with any new area of inquiry, the field of gut microbiome science is fertile soil for pseudoscience, exaggeration, and unscrupulous marketing. How can the consumer tell what information is based on solid science, and what is the magic pill of wishful thinking?
In the 12 fascinating lectures of Gut Health Explained, Dr. Gabrielle Fundaro shares the latest scientific knowledge about the trillions of organisms that live in your gut. Humans have coevolved with this gut microbiota for such a long time that the microbiome interacts with every system in your body. It produces useful compounds that nourish intestinal cells, support metabolic health, protect against certain types of cancer, influence brain activity, and support the immune system-in fact, you might be surprised to learn that the gut contains about 70 percent of the body's immune tissues and cells.
Each of us has a microbiome composition as unique as our fingerprints, made up of trillions of microorganisms. In this course, you'll learn how to navigate the evolving landscape of gut microbiome science while gaining a deep understanding of the intricate interplay between you and your microbiome.
Do You Have a Healthy Gut?
Scientists agree that one of the most important questions in microbiome science is also one of the most elusive to answer: What constitutes a healthy gut? In 2012, the International Life Sciences Institute's North American Gut Microbiome Committee commissioned a review to answer that seemingly straightforward question. At the time, they concluded that a healthy gut microbiome couldn't be defined by one single, idealized composition.
More than a decade later, the question still hasn't been answered. The exact species and quantities of yeasts, bacteria, protists, archaea, unicellular eukaryotes, and viruses that live in each person's gut are determined by genetics, diet, disease, climate, and many more factors. Trying to explain the best gut microbiome by quantifying species distribution is trying to define a system with literally trillions of constantly moving parts-not all of which have yet been fully identified-is like trying to understand the population dynamics of a metropolis based on a single photograph.
Instead, recognizing that everyone is interested in "gut health," even though no one can define exactly what that is-and accepting that plenty of healthy people have vastly different microbiomes-Dr. Fundaro has developed a functional approach. In this course, you'll learn about the "Three Ds of Gut Health." A healthy body will function well in the following categories
Disease. The term "health" usually implies the absence of disease. However, given that about 40 percent of people suffer from a gastrointestinal disease, a healthy gut must include not only one without disease, but also one in which a disease is successfully managed.
Digestion. This includes both your subjective experience of digestion-nausea, bloating, etc.-and the objective ability of your gut to break down and absorb nutrients.
Diversity. This refers to both the number and proportion of microbes (the taxonomic diversity) as well as the variety of genes (the functional diversity) that lets us know what those microbes can do.
Your Gut Microbiome vs. Disease
In the last 15 years, scientists have learned that the relationship between the microbiome and the rest of the body is far more complex than originally thought. As a result of that complexity and lack of detail below the species level, researchers have not yet established any strict cause-and-effect relationships between the gut microbiome and any specific aspect of health or disease. Nevertheless, interesting patterns have emerged with respect to several diseases, including
Colorectal Cancer. High levels of Fusobacterium nucleatum have been observed in patients with colorectal cancer, and it is now considered a potential biomarker for colorectal cancer risk.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS is often characterized with lower microbial diversity in the intestines. However, it would be incorrect to say that lower microbial diversity causes IBS.
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). SIBO is a condition characterized by an abnormally high concentration of bacteria in the small intestine, especially the types that should be found in the large intestine. However, it can't be said whether the abundance of certain microbes is a potential cause or consequence of this GI disease.
Is It Science Or Pseudoscience?
It's not surprising that gut health supplements are selling like mad these days. Given that more than 50,000 articles about the human microbiome have been published in the past 15 years alone, almost everyone has heard about this exciting new field. Unfortunately, the truth is that those 50,000 articles have produced more questions than answers-due to both the complexity of the human microbiome and the necessarily methodical pace of true science. But that's not stopping the unscrupulous from selling products related to the microbiome. How can you tell if an article or a product is based on scientific evidence?
In this course, you'll learn about several tell-tale signs of pseudoscience, including
Anecdotal Evidence. Just because people are willing to tell a television audience how much a particular supplement helped them doesn't mean there's any scientific evidence to support its efficacy. If scientific evidence existed, it would probably be front and center in the ad.
Inaccurate Disease Terminology. Manufacturers may sell supplements for diseases that are not recognized by the medical community. For example, you can buy dozens of products to treat "leaky gut"-but that's not a medically recognized condition.
Direct-to-Consumer Medical Tests. It's a good idea to check with your doctor before ordering any direct-to-consumer medical tests. FDA-approved tests have been shown to be both safe and effective. Any non-approved test might only be analyzed by the manufacturer's lab, and you cannot be sure what your "results" actually mean.
As Gut Health Explained illustrates, huge strides have been made in recent years in this relatively new science. And even without the answers about concrete causative relationships we hope to have in the near future, the field has already provided exciting new avenues to support your overall health.

TTC - How the Great Migration Changed America
Last updated 9/2024
MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch
Genre: eLearning | Language: English | Duration: 12 Lessons ( 5h 44m ) | Size: 4.81 GB
In the early 20th century in the United States, Black Americans grew restless. Most were concentrated in the southern part of the country, caught in an oppressive maze of economic exploitation and Jim Crow segregation. To Black people in the South, northern and western cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City represented a wealth of opportunity-the glitz and glam of jazz clubs, the abundance of jobs, the absence of an overt segregation regime. So, over the next 60 years, tens of millions of Black Southerners packed their bags and migrated North and West. But what they encountered across locales like Harlem or Chicago's South Side neighborhood was far from what they had imagined.
America's "Great Migration"-the exodus of roughly 6 million Black men, women, and children from the southern United States between 1910 and 1970-transformed American politics, culture, and society forever. To be sure, life in the North was made profoundly difficult for new settlers. White resentment gave way to outright street violence and racist housing covenants, while more established Black residents resisted migrant imports like jazz and expressive religious worship. Yet, within this tumultuous environment, a new and distinct tradition emerged: a political, artistic, religious, and resistance culture underwritten by and grounded firmly in the Black migrant experience. The gospel and jazz music we love, the state lotteries we desperately hope to win, the sports we watch, and the neighborhoods we traverse have all been shaped by the movement of Black migrants northward. American life would never again be the same.
How the Great Migration Changed America will take you on a journey through one of the most consequential migration events in U.S. history. Professor Davarian L. Baldwin, the Raether Distinguished Professor of American Studies at Trinity College, will be your expert guide for 12 illuminating lectures that will show you the lasting transformation of American life in the 20th century. Professor Baldwin has written extensively on the Great Migration and represents a new generation of scholars who center this impressive movement in the retelling of African American and US history. But Professor Baldwin is not just a well-read and researched historian. The proud child of Black migrants to Wisconsin, he and his family have been touched by the Great Migration personally. Professor Baldwin, thus, balances an incredible wealth of knowledge with a special and serious sense of responsibility. This is an experience, a history, he knows intimately. And it is one he wants us to get right.
With Professor Baldwin, you will examine key push and pull factors, from oppressive sharecropping systems and public segregation in the South to the lure of New York City jazz clubs and factory jobs in the North. You'll evaluate the perils of northern city living, such as racist street violence, housing segregation, redlining, and white voyeurism. You'll explore how music, performance, film, art, and fashion changed as "down-home traditions" ran up against respectability and a hesitant Black elite. And you'll experience the trials and tribulations of resettlement by getting to know the people-Madam C. J. Walker and Louis Armstrong, notably among them-who lived through it themselves.
Pushes, Pulls, and Problems: From Southern Life to Northern Neighborhoods
To truly understand the motivations behind such a massive migration, you first must start with a look at life in the South. In this course, you'll get a clear picture of the driving forces that would cause entire families to uproot their lives for new opportunities. You'll examine the brutality of Jim Crow segregation and its effect on the individual psyche; you'll unpack the economics of sharecropping and the politics of poll taxes; and much more. Along the way, Professor Baldwin helps break down the myth that only rural African Americans fled the South. He also shows you how down-home Southern culture survived the journey to northern neighborhoods.
After looking at the migration journey, you'll then consider life as a Black American in northern cities. As you dive into the history of neighborhoods that were predominantly Black, like Harlem and Chicago's South Side, you'll learn about the newspapers, clubs, cooperative organizations, churches, and sports arenas that supported Black civic life and leisure. You'll also explore the industrial and labor landscape around cities like Chicago and New York to better understand what the North might have represented in the migrant imagination-and to understand what it was like in reality. Was it about economic opportunity and political freedom? Or was something deeper and more personal at work?
While the North held enormous promise for Southern families looking to escape Jim Crow and the post-Reconstruction political landscape, the harsh realities of northern living could be less of a relief and more of a fresh set of challenges. From redlining to the Red Summer of mid 1919, the Black men and women who settled in apartment blocks throughout the urban North endured a multifront attack. They ran up against extreme violence in the streets and on the factory floor, housing discrimination, sky high rents, and psychological damage. They also struggled to fit into established Black communities that placed outsized value on respectability, quiet religious worship, and a more modest posture. In sorting out the factors that pushed Black Americans out of the South and pulled them up North, you'll ground yourself firmly in the issues that were involved and you'll investigate the complicated tensions that defined Black migrant life. It was precisely during this time period, after all, that an impressive resistance and resilience flourished.
Legacies of the Migration
The Black migrant experience-both the good and the bad-changed American art, music, literature, sports, and leisure culture. In Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, migrants fused Southern traditions with Northern experiences. Their world was one forged in collision and conversation; their music, art, and politics captured the woven expression of a Southern past and Northern present.
Examine the cultural, intellectual, political, and economic legacy of the Great Migration by exploring
Sports. Dive into the history behind the Negro Leagues and their relationship to state-run lotteries today.
Music. Understand how gospel and jazz music evolved out of migrant networks and rose to prominence in the mainstream.
Politics and Ideas. Trace the Civil Rights movement back to the Great Migration, and dive into a more radical Black political and intellectual tradition.
Art and Literature. See how key aesthetic and literary movements reflected the Black migrant experience.
Media. Investigate how film, advertisement, and performance was shaped by the joys and horrors of migration.
Work. Learn about the so-called "Proletarian Turn" and how Black migrants mobilized for a fairer workplace as economic prospects dimmed in the 1930s.
Business. Get to know the Black entrepreneurs, real estate tycoons, and sports team managers who cultivated empires in the long shadow of migration.
We know that wars, elections, and famines change history-but so too does mass movement over time. In the routes that Black migrants traveled, in the neighborhoods they inhabited, in the stories they wrote, and the music they crafted, we find a distinctly American story. We find the very best and the very worst of ourselves. How the Great Migration Changed America will help you build a deeper and more nuanced understanding of not only the past but also the complicated present, as well.

TTC - Existentialism and the Authentic Life
Released 3/2024
MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch
Genre: eLearning | Language: English | Duration: 24 Lessons ( 11h 58m ) | Size: 10 GB
"What's the point of it all?" Most of us have asked ourselves that question at one time or another. The philosophers known as the existentialists certainly did-and for the same reasons you might: war, love, politics, racism, mortality, and more.
For millennia, people have been searching for the meaning of life. The term "existentialists" was first used in the mid-20th century to describe a group of philosophers and writers who focused their inquiry on exactly that. Luckily for us, they did not just ask the questions. Sartre, Beauvoir, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Camus, Fanon, and others also came up with answers, ideas, and suggestions we can apply to our own lives today.
In the 24 fascinating lectures of Existentialism and the Authentic Life, Professor Skye C. Cleary will lead you through the writings of both famous and lesser-known existentialists to help you understand the biggest of all questions. Writing about love, death, sex, war, plagues, intrigue, murder, deception, and more, these thinkers guide you through living an authentic and meaningful life in a world that often seems absurd.
Explore Powerful Existential Ideas
Chances are you've heard the statement: "God is dead." Written by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and published in 1882 in his book The Gay Science (and elsewhere), that one sentence has sparked debate for more than a century. Many have taken offense; others have embraced it. But Nietzsche didn't mean that God (the deity) was dead. What was dead-and what the Enlightenment had ended-was a Western culture governed by the belief that God oversaw every single aspect of life.
But if God is no longer in charge of my life and not responsible for humanity's rights and wrongs, who is? The existentialists answered with a resounding: you. You are responsible for your own life, and you have the freedom to choose what you do with that life. It's up to you to give it meaning and purpose. If you were used to thinking that God was in control and your only responsibilities were worshipping God and following the society's rules, then this existentialism presented a completely new, possibly even shocking, paradigm.
In this course, you'll learn about some of the main issues addressed by existentialism. These include
Anxiety. In many ways, anxiety, choice, and freedom go hand in hand. When you realize that you are in charge of your one and only finite life, anxiety can certainly come into play.
Freedom. The existentialists did not believe in absolute freedom. You are not free to do anything you want, for example, if you don't have the authority or if your actions harm others. However, you do have the freedom to make your own path in this life and to choose your own actions within limits.
Responsibility. With freedom comes responsibility, and not just responsibility for yourself. Being authentic means that you have a responsibility to support others in pursuing their authentic paths in this life.
Examine Misconceptions about Existentialism
In addition to learning about existentialism in this course, you'll also learn what it is not. Many people hear the term existentialism, along with Nietzsche's "God is dead," and immediately assume this philosophy posits that God does not exist, and life is meaningless. Neither is true.
Existentialism does not require that you do or do not believe in God. But, if you do believe in God, existentialism says you are still responsible for all your own life choices. Do existentialists believe that life is meaningless? Definitely not. To the contrary, their works point to many ways in which you can infuse your life with meaning.
Other misconceptions about existentialism include
It's Just a Historical Phase. While this philosophy did become popular in Europe after WWII, and war is certainly a time filled with existential questions, existentialism is just as relevant in today's upside-down world as it was then.
It Doesn't Deal with Ethics. Many existential philosophers were deeply concerned with ethics. Simone de Beauvoir examined our webs of relationships and how we need to take others into account by virtue of the fact that we coexist. Her 1947 The Ethics of Ambiguity specifically explores existential ethics. Kierkegaard, too, pointed to ethics as a critical step toward authentic living.
It's Too Individualistic. Existentialism does deal with the individual being responsible for his or her own life choices. But many of the existentialists also addressed the importance of relationships-both as they bring meaning to life and the responsibility they carry.
Meet Existentialists You've Never Heard Of
Did you know that Sartre and Beauvoir hated being called existentialists? While they fought for a while against having their thinking boxed in, labeled, and catalogued, they finally gave up-realizing that they had more important battles to fight. Many of the philosophers-such as Kierkegaard and Nietzsche-have been retrospectively classified as existential.
Still, other philosophers included in this course are not always considered existentialists, although their works certainly focus on the main existential themes. Some of these writers include
Frantz Fanon. Fanon grew up in the French colony of Martinique. He joined the Free French army to fight against Hitler in WWII but was shocked by the racism he faced among his supposed allies. His writing addressed the "existential deviation" that white Western culture inflicts on people by imposing "whiteness as the universal," with everything else judged against a so-called "norm" that white people can't even live up to.
Toni Morrison. Morrison, winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize in Literature, railed against judging ourselves by how we look, rather than by who we are. Her 1970 novel The Bluest Eye addressed several existential issues, including standing up to those who would objectify us, taking responsibility for our own authentic self-regard, and being authentic friends and community members.
Richard Wright. Wright's 1953 novel The Outsider has been called the first existentialist novel written by an American. His characters attempt many different existential leaps as they try to bring meaning to the absurdity they find all around.
These philosophers thought deeply about our world-not just their own lives, but the lives around them. They continually put forward challenging ideas to help answer the question we all have from time to time: "What in the world is the point of it all?"
In Existentialism and the Authentic Life, discover how the existentialists can guide you toward answering that question for yourself.

Great Castles of Europe offers you a deep and unforgettable encounter with some of history's most remarkable buildings, as you see how major historical events such as the Crusades, the Reconquista, and the War of the Roses impacted castles and their evolution. You'll also explore the experiences of the people who lived in them, from kings and queens to lords and castle holders, and the experiences of the knights, administrators, churchmen, peasants, and women of all ranks whose lives intersected with the functioning of life within the castle.
A Breathtaking, Historical Journey
In this vivid and compelling course, you'll take a panoramic excursion into the remarkable world of castles, uncovering the true story of these amazing structures and their place in medieval life. In doing so, you'll encounter the many and diverse historical roles of castles, at stunning sites such as
Caernarfon Castle of Wales. This soaring, monumental edifice, built to consolidate the English crown's hold on Wales, served as a weapon of political propaganda.
The Alhambra of Spain. The exquisite interiors of the complex's Palace of the Lions were the sumptuous royal residence of the sultans of the Nasrid Dynasty.
Denmark's Kronborg Castle. Immortalized by Shakespeare as Elsinore in Hamlet, this superbly elegant Renaissance castle served principally as a customs station for passing ships.
Massive Malbork Castle. Located in Poland, this classic medieval castle served as the administrative hub of a political state and the center of huge commercial networks.
France's Carcassonne. One of the most beautiful and iconic medieval walled cities in Europe, Carcassonne emblemizes military action at castles, seeing a devastating siege during its tumultuous history.
In Great Castles of Europe, you'll enjoy a spectrum of the most magnificent and historic edifices ever built, and a richly detailed view of life in the Middle Ages.
Masterpieces of Medieval Architecture
While we tend to associate castles with warfare, their defensive role was only one side of their story. You'll learn that a great majority of castles never saw sieges or military conflict. At the beginning of Great Castles of Europe, you'll look at the three functions that historians dictate that a structure must serve in order to be considered a castle. Castles must have
Defensive Capabilities encompassing the architectural elements of curtain walls, battlements, towers, gateways, moats, and more;
Residential Features including Great Halls, kitchens, residential apartments, hunting parks, and ornamental gardens; and
Administrative Functions as centers of manorial estates and local affairs, encompassing roles such as agricultural production, courts of law, tax collection points, religious centers, and much more.
Within this context, you'll explore the multidimensional lore of castles in the Middle Ages, as the story unfolds across the European world
Castle Builders of Britain. Track British castle-building from the Norman invasion to the English civil wars and beyond; study sites such as the earth-and-timber castle Hen Domen, and its dramatic history, the famous Tower of London, with its classic Norman architectural features, and Bodiam Castle, an archetypal medieval castle that divides scholars as to its true purpose.
Classic Castles of Spain and Italy. Trace the medieval history of the Iberian peninsula, where the mix of Christian and ---c cultures produced unique castle architecture, as seen in the spectacular Alcázar of Seville and the great fortress-palace complex of the Alhambra. Also experience the beauty and unusual geometric form of Italy's Castel del Monte, a royal pleasure palace of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II to indulge in his passion of hunting.
Christian Fortresses of the Holy Land. Witness the proliferation of castle-building during the Crusades, in the crusader kingdoms of the Mediterranean, often under the aegis of the military orders of the Teutonic Knights and Hospitallers. Take in the site of the awe-inspiring Crac des Chevaliers, its elaborate concentric design and innovative military architecture.
Monastic Castles of Eastern Europe. In the wake of Europe's crusades against pagan peoples, relive the era of conquest, religious conversion, and colonization that produced Baltic castles that resembled fortified monasteries. Delve into the scholarly and scientific study of Latvia's Cēsis Castle, administrative center of military orders and the site of fierce battles and sieges.
France's Renaissance Châteaus. As the age of castles waned, visit the astonishing châteaus of France, which featured ostentatious splendor and a minimizing of defensive features, such as the palatial Fontainebleau and Château d'Amboise. Study the majestic Château de Chenonceau, and the other building projects of French queen Catherine de Medici.
Castles and Medieval Lives
Throughout these richly informative lectures, Professor McAlister illuminates not only the castles themselves and their historical trajectory, but also the remarkable people whose lives were lived in and around them.
While many of the histories surrounding these castles hinge on the actions of male figures-such as King Richard Lionheart of England, builder of Château Gaillard in France; Master James of St. George, castle architect to Edward I of England; and embattled Dutch castle builder Dirk Loef van Horne-you'll also learn about the integral and intriguing roles of women in medieval castles.
You'll discover that there were multiple cases of women who not only owned and managed castles, but also who built them and defended them militarily. Among these cases, you'll follow the stories of castle builder, Lady Roesia de Verdun; heiress Isabel de Clare, who defended the siege of Kilkenny Castle; and Margaret Paston, matriarch and estate manager of England's Caister Castle. You learn Margaret's story from the astonishing Paston letters, a trove of documents that tell the incredible narrative of one family's struggle to hold onto a castle through wars and politically volatile times.
In rounding out the story of castles, you'll learn the history of the dehumanizing "slave castles" of the West African coast; you'll visit Neuschwanstein, the famous Bavarian fantasy and pseudo castle; and you'll follow the trail of Bram Stoker's Dracula to the castles of Transylvania.
The 24 eye-opening lectures of Great Castles of Europe offer you a deep and unforgettable encounter with some of history's most remarkable buildings, and with the extraordinary human sagas that took place within their walls.

TTC - Music Theory: The Foundation of Great Music
Last updated 9/2024
MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch
Genre: eLearning | Language: English | Duration: 18 Lessons ( 7h 32m ) | Size: 6.23 GB

Music has a phenomenal power to move, transport, and delight us. Across numerous styles and forms-from the iconic masterpieces of the classical tradition to genres such as jazz, rock, pop, and folk-great music expresses the inexpressible, speaks across time and cultures, and galvanizes audiences across the world. And the more we understand about music, the more we appreciate it, and a knowledge of music theory is the best place to start.

Music may be the most abstract of the arts, as its sonic language is a spectrum of tones, but it has a highly organized structure, a structure that allows for both its form and its meaning. In fact, the great expressive capacity of music and its ability to captivate us and to deeply communicate is rooted in its organized structure and how that structure is used creatively by composers, as well as by performers.
A clear knowledge of the theory of music-the "how" of music-offers you insight into
How a musical narrative is created and how music communicates;
How music uses time and moves through time;
How the tension, release, and resolution of musical harmony play an essential role in the expressive power of music;
The diversity of musical styles, and what makes musical styles and genres what they are, be it classical, jazz, bluegrass, or rock & roll;
How rhythmic structure influences the effect the music has on us;
How different expressive effects are created, both by composers and players;
How music is conceived by those who write and play it; and more.
In Music Theory: The Foundation of Great Music, you'll delve into the inner workings of Western tonal music through 18 enjoyable and revealing lessons taught by Professor Sean Atkinson of Texas Christian University. Professor Atkinson, an eminent music theorist and teacher, makes music theory refreshingly clear and accessible, demystifying the skill of reading music as well as the principles of musical analysis. Using a highly interactive approach, he orients the lessons to an understanding of how music creates its remarkable effects, both formally and expressively, and how this understanding benefits us as listeners and players.
At the heart of these lessons lies the ability to read music as a tool for understanding what you hear and for deepening your enjoyment in listening, as well as for playing music. As you learn, step by step, to read and understand the written score, you'll see the structure of the music and how the music unfolds on the page. You'll also see how musical tones are written down in the form of notes, with each note having a rhythmic value, showing how long the note lasts in time. And you'll study how rhythm and meter work in music, how the key element of musical harmony functions, how a musical score is performed, and much more. With highly valuable insights for both listeners and instrumentalists, these 18 engaging lessons will teach you to become literate in the language of music.
Discover the Inner Structure of Musical Expression
As you develop your skills in reading and understanding the score, you'll explore the essential elements of musical form, structure, and composition, such as
Tonality-Grasp how most Western music is based in tonality-the organization of musical tones into recognizable patterns; learn how musical scales, 7-note sequences, form the sonic grounding or tonality of works of music, how major and minor scales are often associated with different states of mind, and how musical scales are related to one another;
Rhythm and Meter-Learn how rhythm forms a central structure or backbone for a piece of music, and build skill in reading and performing musical rhythms; also, study meter, the organization of musical pulses or beats within the music and on the page, and explore the systems of simple and compound meter;
Counterpoint-One of the core features of Western classical music, uncover the parameters of counterpoint, the writing of two melodic lines which are played at the same time; see how the melodic lines move in very specific ways, forming a coherent sequence that makes melodic and harmonic sense, and creating the basis for musical narrative;
Harmony-Study the laws of harmony, the foundation of tonal music, where two or more notes are played together; learn how chords, groups of three or more notes that sound at the same time, form sequences or progressions, creating tonal tension or instability that leads finally to resolution or stability-an integral element of the expressive power of music;
Musical Narrative: Phrase Structure-Witness how a piece of music unfolds by means of musical units called phrases, which have a beginning and an end; then see how phrases are encompassed within larger units called periods and sentences, allowing the music to create a sense of a narrative or "story" in sound; and
Playing the Score: Elements of Expression-Explore the markings within a score that indicate how the music should be performed; take account of dynamics, the volume or loudness of a given sequence, articulation, the way an individual note should be performed, and tempo, the speed of the music, and how these indications are realized by performers.
Enjoy Literacy in the Language of Music
Throughout the course, Professor Atkinson's spirited and approachable teaching style makes for a thoroughly compelling and fun excursion into music theory and its applications. He illustrates the elements of musical form and structure with recorded examples from great works by Bach, Mozart, Haydn, and Robert and Clara Schumann, as well as excerpts from jazz, rock, and other musical genres, showing how the principles of tonal music apply within different musical forms. Extensive onscreen graphics clearly illustrate the musical elements under discussion, making the material easy to follow and directly graspable. A special course workbook provides many additional resources for study and practice.
A particularly special feature of this course is a live session with a working jazz pianist, who plays several jazz classics, interpreting the songs using only chords and a melody line. Here you witness musical improvisation in action, and its relevance to understanding musical form and expression.
Music Theory: The Foundation of Great Music offers you an adventure in listening, a richly insightful inquiry that will deepen your appreciation and enjoyment of one of our world's most sublime art forms.

The Economist Audio Edition - November 09, 2024
English | 7 h 49 m | MP3 | 212 MB
"It is not only The Economist's name that people find baffling. Here are some other common questions.
First, why does it call itself a newspaper? Even when The Economist incorporated the Bankers' Gazette and Railway Monitor from 1845 to 1932, it also described itself as "a political, literary and general newspaper".
It still does so because, in addition to offering analysis and opinion, it tries in each issue to cover the main events business and political of the week. It goes to press on Thursdays and, printed simultaneously in six countries, is available in most of the world's main cities the following day or soon after. Readers everywhere get the same editorial matter. The advertisements differ. The running order of the sections, and sometimes the cover, also differ. But the words are the same, except that each week readers in Britain get a few extra pages devoted to British news.
Why is it anonymous? Many hands write The Economist, but it speaks with a collective voice. Leaders are discussed, often disputed, each week in meetings that are open to all members of the editorial staff. Journalists often co-operate on articles. And some articles are heavily edited. The main reason for anonymity, however, is a belief that what is written is more important than who writes it. As Geoffrey Crowther, editor from 1938 to 1956, put it, anonymity keeps the editor "not the master but the servant of something far greater than himself. You can call that ancestor-worship if you wish, but it gives to the paper an astonishing momentum of thought and principle."

TTC - How to Survive in Space
Released 3/2024
MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch
Genre: eLearning | Language: English | Duration: 12 Lessons ( 5h 51m ) | Size: 4.9 GB
Space is out to kill you. The vacuum of space is the least of your worries, though, since just getting there requires surviving explosions powerful enough to escape Earth's gravity-the rocket launch. Once you arrive, you will be weightless, which has its own array of health risks. Space is also saturated with radiation, including high-energy cosmic rays that can penetrate the hull of any spacecraft. Returning to Earth isn't just a launch in reverse. This time, you must survive reentry temperatures hot enough to melt steel.
Yet for all the perils of spaceflight, over 600 people have made the trip. Drawing on the hard-won insights of NASA astronauts and space researchers, this exciting 12-lecture course is taught by a veteran biomedical space researcher. In How to Survive in Space, you will learn about the dangers and inconveniences astronauts face while in space and what it takes to survive.
Your expert space researcher guide is Ronke Olabisi, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. Her detailed presentation will satisfy even the most ardent space enthusiast, immersing you in the tricky business of living beyond Earth's atmosphere. Space travelers must be prepared for a variety of trials and tribulations, such as
Microgravity: Another term for weightlessness, this state of ceaseless free-fall induces violent nausea in many astronauts, which usually fades after a day or two. However, serious physiological effects are more long-lasting.
Eating: Space is a good place to lose weight, since the food is generally mushy and unpalatable, and taste buds are dulled by side effects of microgravity. After digestion, answering nature's call can be challenging to say the least.
Bathing: Astronauts work up a sweat exercising to stave off muscle atrophy, but they are restricted to only sponge baths due to water rationing. Additionally, they have limited clothing. An astronaut even compared the cabin smell to an odor of being in a jail.
Nevertheless, space is an adventure unlike any other. Dr. Olabisi covers a variety of past, present, and future missions. She covers the Apollo lunar landings; life aboard the International Space Station; and 21st-century expeditions to the Moon, Mars, and even asteroids.
Learn Why Space Missions Are No Bed of Roses
How to Survive in Space opens with the pre-launch routine that astronauts typically follow to get ready for a mission, much like a marathoner preparing for a race. One crucial step is readjusting sleep cycles to match the schedule that will be followed in space. For example, while in Earth orbit, an astronaut will experience a sunrise and sunset occuring every 90 minutes, providing no clue about when to start and end their day. Instead, crew members usually observe the schedule at mission control-a practice also followed while on the Moon, where day and night last for two weeks each.
Other pre-launch preparations include medical check-ups, a precautionary bowel cleanse, and quarantine. Before the countdown to launch begins, astronauts suit up and recline in form-fitted seats inside the spacecraft. Then, following ignition, takeoff-an explosion of hot, high-velocity gases-launches the spacecraft toward outer space. As the vehicle gains speed, g-forces mount, but acceleration is kept under the level that would cause blackout and injuries.
Once in orbit, the rocket expends itself, and suddenly everything is weightless. Astronaut videos make this state look like a funhouse romp, but it's no picnic. Aside from intense, usually temporary, motion sickness, weightless astronauts also face various perils
Osteoporosis: The absence of a gravitational load in microgravity causes bones to lose density, increasing the risk of fractures and debilitating problems like kidney stones. Astronauts must compensate with diet and exercise.
Microbes: Microgravity, the closed cabin, and the difficulty of cleaning surfaces, not to mention the astronauts themselves, all contribute to the growth of microbes, including ones that have uniquely evolved in the weightless environment.
Drowning: In microgravity, a leak of water coolant in spacesuits has led to near drowning in at least two spacewalks. Instead of draining to the bottom of the suit, the water collects in a sphere that grows ever larger in the astronaut's helmet.
Discover How Hollywood Gets It Wrong
For most of us, movies are the primary window into the world of spaceflight. Unfortunately, the demands of plot routinely lead scriptwriters to invent, exaggerate, or otherwise mislead viewers about the realities of the experience. How to Survive in Space serves as an enlightening corrective to the following Hollywood howlers
Vacuum Fallacies: Astronauts exposed to the vacuum of space are invariably shown freezing or exploding, or facing gale-force winds if their spacecraft is ruptured. While a vacuum is indeed dangerous, its effects are far less cinematic.
Don't Try This: One film shows an astronaut punching a hole in his spacesuit to use the escaping air for emergency propulsion. Not a good idea! The thrust would be insufficient to move the astronaut, who would quickly succumb to the bends.
Return to Earth: In the movies, returning space travelers are usually depicted striding triumphantly from their ship. In fact, if they had been away for any length of time, they would be crawling due to the sudden experience of gravity.
On the other hand, the film industry did get at least one thing right in the 1929 German drama The Woman in the Moon, which introduced the countdown for the first time as a prelude to a space launch. Real rocketeers later adopted the backward count to zero as the most efficient way to organize a checklist and coordinate actions. The countdown also adds a fitting degree of suspense!
Who Will Lead the Way?
Dr. Olabisi busts one of the biggest myths about space: that men are the logical sex to lead the way to this final frontier.
It turns out that female astronauts have many advantages over their male counterparts. Women weigh less and, therefore, cost less to send into space. Women can withstand higher g-forces during launch without passing out. Women are less susceptible to vision problems from microgravity. They are more psychosocially resilient in the extreme isolation and confinement of space. And they are less cognitively affected by radiation, which combined with all the other space stressors contributes to what astronauts call the "space stupids." They clearly have the "right stuff."
But whatever your gender or age, short of joining the astronaut corps or spending a fortune to buy a ticket as a space tourist, How to Survive in Space is your gateway to an adventure that is truly out of this world!
What Will You Learn?
Discover how astronauts handle the perils of spaceflight
Explore the ways astronauts prepare for a space mission
Study the freedom (and health effects) of microgravity

Description
Maths - Niraj KumarOr,2.
