Rabbit Hole

Srinu sat cursing at his PC, frustrated by the slow recovery of the videos. The ETA still showed two more days for the complete recovery, leaving him no choice but to wait. Feeling defeated, he walked out of his office and headed upstairs to the bedroom. Quietly, he slipped into bed beside Ganga. She instinctively cuddled up to him, her head resting on his chest, still fast asleep. As he gazed down at her, Srinu couldn’t help but notice how beautiful she looked—her soft, cherry-red lips were inviting even in her sleep.

Without thinking, his head leaned toward hers, and he softly kissed her lips. To his surprise, her lips subtly moved, responding to his kiss even in her slumber. For a brief moment, he felt drawn to her, but then the memory of her lie from earlier that day came rushing back. His anger surged, and he pulled back, closing his eyes in frustration.

"Let me get the proof I need," he thought to himself, his mind still consumed by suspicion. "Then I'll show her." With these thoughts swirling in his head, Srinu slowly drifted off to sleep, his emotions a volatile mix of love, anger, and doubt.

In the morning, everything seemed normal. Srinu followed his usual routine of getting ready for the office, while Ganga prepared lunch for him. He took the lunch she packed and rode off on his bike. However, instead of heading straight to work, Srinu circled back to the end of their street and carefully made his way behind their house, parking his bike and hiding in some bushes by the compound wall. From this hidden spot, he had a full view of the house. Although he had already placed spy cameras, he wanted to catch Ganga in the act himself, especially if she was meeting with the autowala.

He crouched patiently, waiting to see if something unusual would happen. Soon enough, the milkman arrived. Srinu watched as the milkman knocked on the door, and Ganga opened it with her usual warm smile. They exchanged their formal greetings, and Ganga held out a bowl for the milk. As the milkman began pouring, Srinu noticed something odd—he was slowly bending down as he poured, forcing Ganga to bend down too. Srinu immediately knew what the milkman was doing.

"You slimy old man," Srinu thought angrily, his blood boiling. He clenched his fists, ready to leap over the compound wall and confront the milkman. The situation intensified as Ganga’s pallu slipped from her shoulder, revealing her cleavage.

Srinu's anger surged, and he was just about to jump over the wall and beat the milkman senseless.

But then, something unexpected happened. Ganga, with a seemingly innocent face, noticed her pallu had fallen and asked the milkman to put it back on her shoulder. Srinu froze in disbelief, watching as the milkman, eyes glued to her cleavage, happily obliged. The milkman lifted the pallu and gently placed it back over Ganga’s shoulder, all while taking in the view. Ganga smiled and thanked him, as if nothing was out of the ordinary. Before leaving, the milkman uttered the same strange phrase as the day before, "...ganj ka...ni," to which Ganga responded with another smile.

As the milkman walked away and Ganga went back inside the house, Srinu remained hidden, stunned by what he had just witnessed. His mind raced. "How could she behave like this around the milkman? And what the hell did he say to her before leaving?" He couldn’t make sense of it. Was Ganga playing some kind of game, or was there more to this interaction than he could understand?

Minutes passed as Srinu stood behind the wall, still replaying what the old milkman had said to Ganga. His mind raced, trying to figure out the meaning behind the strange phrase. Just then, another knock on the door echoed through the silence. Srinu watched intently as Ganga opened the door, and this time, it was the waterboy.

He saw Ganga head inside to fetch the matka, and as she came back, carrying it on her waist, Srinu noticed something unsettling—Ganga and the waterboy exchanged shy glances.

A pang of suspicion hit him hard as he kept watching, trying to make sense of their body language.

After the waterboy finished pouring the water, Ganga took the matka inside. But just before she left, the waterboy asked, "Madam, ek glass pani milega?" [Madam, can I get a glass of water?] Srinu could see Ganga bring him a glass of water, but what really caught his attention was how the waterboy deliberately touched her fingers while taking the glass from her. Even more shocking for Srinu was that Ganga seemed to reciprocate the touch when she took the glass back from him.

Before leaving, the waterboy uttered the same phrase that the milkman had said earlier, "...ganj ka...ni" [a phrase he couldn't fully understand], and once again, Ganga responded with a smile. Srinu watched, his anger rising to a boiling point.

As the waterboy left and Ganga returned inside the house, Srinu muttered furiously under his breath, "What a whore! Touching the waterboy’s hand and making the milkman touch her pallu. Why is she doing this? Is she fucking them as well? How was I so ignorant all these days?" He seethed with frustration, the questions piling up in his mind, but the one that gnawed at him the most was, "What the hell were they saying to her before they left?"

Srinu stood hidden in the bushes, his mind racing with questions. "How long has this been going on?" he thought to himself, his frustration growing. He wanted to burst into the house and confront Ganga, demand answers, but he knew it would be pointless without solid proof. He needed more than what he had seen so far, so he controlled his anger and waited for the autowala.

Hours passed, but there was no sign of the autowala. Srinu watched Ganga as she went about her usual daily chores, but the absence of the autowala only added to his confusion. He glanced at his watch—it was already noon. Feeling frustrated, he pulled out his phone and saw several messages from his office. Realizing there was no point in waiting any longer, he decided to leave.

As he walked towards his bike, his mind kept racing, "Why didn't the autowala come today?" He couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. With these lingering thoughts, he rode off to his office, still seeking answers.

Srinu reached his office and went into his cabin, unable to shake the thoughts consuming him. He paced around the room, his mind swirling with questions about Ganga’s sudden, strange behavior. "What’s going on with her? Why is she behaving like this? When did she change?" His thoughts jumped back to the attack. "Did something happen after that? While I was in the hospital for three weeks?" Even more confusing was the fact that she had been acting perfectly normal while he was recovering in the hospital and after he came home. It was only in the last few days that her behavior had started to change.

The more he thought about it, the clearer it became that there were two mysteries at hand: one in the present with Ganga and the autowala, and one in the past with Ganga, Javed, and ChaCha. He had a gut feeling that somehow these two mysteries were linked, but he couldn’t yet see how.

Srinu sat down in his chair, thinking about how to solve both. For the first mystery—Ganga and the autowala—he decided to follow the autowala the next time he came to their house. He needed to see where they went and what they did. As for the second mystery—Ganga and what happened with Javed and ChaCha—he realized he had no other choice but to wait until the recovery software finished retrieving all the videos from the phone. That would give him the answers he needed.

He looked at his watch, counting down the hours until 5 p.m., anxious to get home and check on the progress of the video recovery. His mind raced with all the possibilities, wondering what kind of secrets might be hidden in those videos.

"How deep is this rabbit hole?" he thought to himself, as the clock ticked slowly, with his suspicions growing by the minute.
