Dead Phone
Srinu awoke abruptly at 4 AM, It was Monday. His sleep had been fitful, haunted by fragmented dreams and the unsettling revelations of the previous night. He lay still for a moment, listening to the soft, rhythmic breathing of Ganga beside him, her peaceful slumber a stark contrast to his restless night.
Unable to remain in bed any longer, Srinu carefully slipped out from under the covers, making sure not to disturb Ganga. The wooden floor felt cool beneath his bare feet as he moved silently across the room, his mind already focused on the task ahead. The house was cloaked in early morning silence, amplifying the soft creaks and whispers of his movements.
He headed straight to his office room, a small, cluttered space that had become the epicenter of his recent investigations. Flicking on the desk lamp, he was greeted by the familiar sight of papers strewn about, his laptop still open from the night before, and a lingering sense of urgency hanging in the air.
Srinu began gathering the items he would need for his early morning expedition to the abandoned construction site. He retrieved a sturdy flashlight from a drawer, testing its beam to ensure it cut sharply through the darkness. Next, he grabbed a small backpack and started filling it with essentials: a pair of gloves, a dust mask, his smartphone fully charged, and a multipurpose tool kit. He wanted to be prepared for any scenario, knowing well that the derelict site could pose unforeseen challenges.
As he packed, Srinu's eyes fell upon a plain cardboard box tucked away in the corner of the room. The box was labeled in bold letters: "DO NOT TOUCH." He hesitated for a moment, memories flooding back of the shame and guilt he had felt when he first decided to spy on Ganga. Inside were the sophisticated spy cameras he had purchased weeks ago, devices he had vowed never to use again after reconciling with his trust in her.
But now, with new doubts gnawing at his mind—the suspicious behavior of the milkman, water boy, and especially the cryptic actions surrounding the TV repairman—Srinu felt his convictions wavering. The discovery of the dropped cell phone in the CCTV footage had reignited his suspicions, casting shadows over the trust he had so painstakingly rebuilt.
He walked over to the box, his heart pounding slightly faster as he lifted the lid. The sleek, compact cameras lay neatly inside, their dark lenses reflecting the dim light of the room. Srinu contemplated for a moment, wrestling with his conscience. The moral dilemma was palpable: respect Ganga's privacy and the sanctity of their relationship, or pursue the truth that seemed to elude him at every turn.
After a brief internal struggle, determination hardened his features. He rationalized that this surveillance would be temporary, a necessary step to clear the lingering doubts and protect the integrity of their marriage. With renewed purpose, he carefully removed the cameras from the box, inspecting each one to ensure they were still functional.
Moving swiftly and silently through the house, Srinu began positioning the cameras in strategic locations. He placed one in the living room, concealed among the decorative items on the bookshelf, providing a wide-angle view of the main area. Another was hidden in the kitchen, tucked behind a jar on top of the cabinet, capturing anyone who entered or exited through the back door.
After setting up the cameras, Srinu quietly slipped out of the house, the early morning stillness enveloping him. He pushed his bike down the street, careful not to start the engine until he was far enough away so as not to disturb the peaceful silence of the neighborhood. When he felt it was safe, he kicked the engine into life and rode towards the abandoned construction site, his heart pounding with a mix of anticipation and anxiety.
He parked his bike a short distance from the site, ensuring it was hidden from view behind some overgrown bushes. The area was eerily quiet, with no workers or passersby in sight. The deserted surroundings only heightened the tension Srinu felt as he surveyed the site, trying to match the landscape with the images he had seen in the CCTV footage.
Using the footage as a mental map, Srinu carefully made his way to the spot where the phone had fallen from Chacha’s lungi. The morning light was still dim, so he pulled out his flashlight and switched it on, the beam cutting through the murky shadows that clung to the decrepit structure. The recent heavy rains had turned the ground into a muddy mess, and the wind had scattered debris and trash across the site, making his task even more challenging.
Srinu methodically combed through the area, his eyes scanning every inch of the ground. He used the flashlight to probe into corners and crevices, lifting broken pieces of wood and rusted metal in his search. Time seemed to stretch as he painstakingly sifted through the layers of dirt and debris, his frustration growing with each passing minute.
Despite his best efforts, the combination of mud, water, and trash made the search almost impossible. The rain had washed much of the ground, leaving behind puddles and a thick layer of sludge that obscured anything beneath it. Srinu’s hands were caked with mud as he continued to search, growing more disheartened with each passing moment.
After more than an hour of fruitless searching, Srinu was on the verge of giving up. He stood up, wiping the sweat from his brow, feeling a heavy sense of disappointment settle over him. Just as he was about to abandon the search, his foot accidentally kicked something small and hard in a puddle nearby. He quickly shone his flashlight over the area, his breath catching in his throat as he spotted a faint glint of metal.
Kneeling down, Srinu reached into the puddle and pulled out the object. His heart skipped a beat when he realized it was the phone he had been searching for. But his initial excitement was quickly dampened when he saw the condition it was in—the phone was soaked through, the screen cracked and unresponsive. The casing was covered in mud, and water dripped from its edges as he turned it over in his hands.
Desperate, Srinu tried to power it on, pressing the buttons with increasing urgency, but the phone remained stubbornly dead. It was clear that the water damage had rendered it useless. A wave of frustration and disappointment washed over him as he realized that his last hope for finding answers had been dashed.
Srinu: (whispering to himself, defeated) "Damn it…"
He stood there for a moment, staring down at the lifeless phone in his hand, feeling a deep sense of loss. All the effort, the sleepless nights, the doubts—it all seemed to have been for nothing. With a heavy heart, he slipped the phone into his backpack, deciding to take it home in case he could salvage anything from it later.
As he made his way back to his bike, the sun was beginning to rise, casting a dull gray light over the construction site. Srinu mounted his bike, started the engine, and rode home, the thrill of the chase now replaced by a sinking sense of futility. The morning air was cool against his face, but it did little to lift his spirits as he replayed the events in his mind.
When Srinu finally arrived home, the house was still quiet. Ganga was likely still asleep, unaware of the turmoil that had gripped him for the past few hours.
Srinu walked into his room, the weight of the morning’s events pressing down on him. He sat heavily in his desk chair, the dead phone clutched in his hand, and placed it on the desk in front of him. The room was dimly lit, and the silence felt almost oppressive as he stared at the waterlogged device. His mind raced, trying to recall where he had read something about retrieving data from a dead phone. He needed a solution, a way to salvage whatever information might be stored on the device.
After a few moments of searching through his desk drawers, he found what he was looking for—an old electronics magazine he had read a couple of years ago. The pages were slightly worn, the edges frayed from use, but it was still legible. Flipping through the pages, he quickly found the article he remembered, which detailed the process of disassembling a damaged phone to access its internal components.
With a newfound sense of purpose, Srinu carefully cleaned the phone with tissue paper, wiping away the mud and water as best he could. He followed the instructions in the magazine step by step, meticulously disassembling the phone. The process was delicate; one wrong move could render the chipset useless. As he removed the battery and then the chipset, he couldn’t help but feel a mixture of anxiety and determination. This was his last hope of finding any useful data that might help him make sense of the situation.
Once the chipset was free, Srinu spent the next half hour drying it thoroughly. He used a soft cloth to absorb any remaining moisture, making sure to check every crevice for hidden water droplets. The minutes ticked by slowly as he worked, his hands moving with steady precision despite the tension building inside him.
When he was finally satisfied that the chipset was dry, Srinu connected it to an external power source. He paused for a moment, his hand hovering over the power switch, fully aware that this was the critical moment. If the chipset was too damaged, there would be no recovering anything from it. Taking a deep breath, he flicked the switch and watched as the power supply hummed to life.
Srinu connected the chipset to his laptop via a USB cable, his heart pounding in his chest. For a moment, nothing happened, and doubt began to creep in. But then, to his immense relief, a notification popped up on his screen. The operating system had recognized the external device as the chipset. A surge of hope rushed through him as he realized that all was not lost.
Srinu: (whispering to himself, a small smile forming on his lips) "It’s working… it’s actually working."
Delighted by this unexpected success, Srinu continued reading the rest of the magazine article. It recommended several software options for retrieving digital data from the chipset. Without wasting any time, he searched online for the suggested software and quickly downloaded the most promising one. His hands trembled slightly as he installed the program, eager to begin the data recovery process.
Once the software was ready, Srinu initiated the retrieval process. He watched as lines of code scrolled across the screen, the program working to extract the data from the damaged chipset. But his excitement was short-lived. As he read through the software’s progress log, he realized with a sinking feeling that the algorithm being used for data retrieval was a brute-force method—a process that could take days to complete.
The estimated time displayed on the screen confirmed his fears: three to four days. Srinu leaned back in his chair, frustration bubbling up inside him. He had hoped for a quick solution, something that would give him the answers he desperately needed right away. But now, he was faced with a long, agonizing wait.
Srinu: (muttering to himself, his earlier excitement fading) "Three to four days… I don’t have that kind of time."
He rubbed his eyes, exhaustion starting to set in. The events of the past few days had taken their toll, and now the prospect of waiting for the data to be retrieved felt like yet another hurdle in an already exhausting journey. But Srinu knew he had no other choice. He had to be patient, even if it meant enduring the uncertainty for a few more days.
However, he knew he couldn’t just sit and do nothing during that time. His last hope, at least for now, lay in the spy cameras he had placed in and around the house a few hours ago. If there was anything suspicious to uncover, those cameras would capture it. He clung to the hope that today, he might find something significant on the CCTV cameras.
It was Monday, the start of a new workweek, and Srinu needed to keep up appearances. After a few moments of contemplation, he walked out of his office room to get ready for the day. The house was beginning to wake up, the early morning light filtering through the windows, casting a warm glow across the rooms.
The rest of the morning proceeded as usual. Ganga moved about the house, preparing breakfast and packing Srinu’s lunch, her routine as seamless as ever. Srinu joined her at the table, eating his breakfast with a sense of unease lingering in the back of his mind. He tried to engage in light conversation, but his thoughts kept drifting back to the cameras and the possibility of discovering something that would explain the strange behavior he had observed.
After finishing his meal, Srinu took the lunchbox from Ganga and waved her goodbye, trying to mask his apprehension with a forced smile. Ganga, as usual, responded with a warm smile, seemingly unaware of the turmoil swirling inside him.
Ganga: (cheerfully, as she handed him the lunchbox) "Have a great day at work, Srinu. See you in the evening!"
Srinu: (forcing a smile, trying to sound normal) "You too, Ganga. Take care."
Srinu drove to his office as quickly as possible, his mind racing with thoughts of what he might find on the surveillance footage. Once he arrived, he wasted no time in heading to his private office room. After closing the door behind him, he immediately sat down in front of his monitor, eager to begin his day of parallel observation and work. He connected to the live feed from the spy cameras, his heart pounding with anticipation.
For the first part of the morning, everything appeared to be normal. Ganga went about her usual routine—tidying up the house, preparing meals, and doing other chores. Srinu watched closely, hoping to catch something out of the ordinary. He tried to focus on his work, but his eyes kept drifting back to the monitor, scanning the footage for any signs of unusual activity.
Then, something caught his attention. The milkman arrived, just as he did every morning, but this time was different. Srinu noticed that the conversation between the milkman and Ganga lasted longer than usual. They stood at the doorway, exchanging words for several minutes, and Srinu could sense a shift in Ganga’s demeanor. She seemed more animated, more engaged in the conversation than he had seen before. Her usual polite smile was now replaced with something warmer, more familiar.
Srinu: (whispering to himself, narrowing his eyes at the screen) "What’s going on here…?"
His unease grew as he watched the interaction. There was something about the way they were speaking to each other that didn’t sit right with him. He couldn’t hear what they were saying, but the body language was enough to make him suspicious.
A short while later, the water boy arrived to deliver the water bottles. Again, the interaction was different from what Srinu had observed in previous days. Like the milkman, the water boy engaged in a longer conversation with Ganga, and once again, her behavior seemed off. She laughed at something he said, her body language more relaxed, almost flirtatious. Srinu’s grip tightened on the edge of his desk as he watched, a knot of anxiety forming in his stomach.
Srinu: (muttering to himself, his voice tense) "Why are they talking for so long? What’s changed?"
The unease that had been simmering inside him for weeks suddenly flared up into full-blown suspicion. This was different from Ganga’s usual routine, different from what he had seen before. He felt a deep sense of dread, wondering if his worst fears were being realized.
Srinu's focus on his work dissolved entirely as he became increasingly engrossed in the live feed from the spy cameras. His eyes were glued to the monitor, thoughts racing as he muttered to himself, "This is interesting..."
He watched as Ganga, after finishing her morning chores, suddenly changed her routine. Instead of continuing with her usual activities, she headed upstairs to their bedroom. Srinu's curiosity peaked; something about this deviation from her normal behavior felt unusual, out of place.
As the camera feed switched to the bedroom, Srinu saw Ganga enter and close the door behind her. He watched intently as she moved to the wardrobe, her movements deliberate but not rushed. His eyes widened as she began to undress, slowly removing her nighty. The sight of her naked body stirred a mix of emotions within him—on one side, he couldn’t help but be captivated by her beauty. Her curves, her soft flesh, the way her body moved with each step—it was a sight that made his heart race and his body respond almost involuntarily. His penis throbbed with each bend, especially when she bent down, giving him an unobstructed view of her juicy pussy and round ass.
But alongside the physical reaction, Srinu's mind was wrestling with confusion. Why was she getting dressed so deliberately, especially when she hadn’t mentioned any plans to go out or visit anyone today? The more he watched, the more uneasy he became. Ganga was not just changing into any outfit—she was carefully selecting a cotton saree, one that accentuated her figure in all the right ways. It was the kind of attire she wore when going out to meet someone, not when staying at home.
Srinu’s thoughts were conflicted, torn between the lustful appreciation of his wife’s body and the growing suspicion that something was amiss. His mind tried to rationalize what he was seeing. Maybe she’s just getting dressed up for the day... Maybe she wants to feel more comfortable... But the doubts persisted. Why hadn’t she mentioned any plans? Why the sudden change in her behavior, especially after the unusual interactions with the milkman and water boy earlier?
As Ganga finished dbanging the saree around her, Srinu could see her adjust it with practiced hands, ensuring that it fit perfectly. She then checked herself in the mirror, smoothing out the fabric and making sure everything was in place. The way she took care to present herself only deepened Srinu’s concerns.
Srinu: (thinking to himself, a mix of desire and suspicion in his thoughts) "Why is she doing this? Who is she getting dressed for?"
The questions gnawed at him as he continued to watch, his mind struggling to make sense of what was unfolding before him. His emotions were in turmoil—on one hand, the sight of Ganga's body had aroused him, making him long to be with her, to touch her, to feel the warmth of her skin. On the other hand, the creeping doubts about her intentions left him cold and uncertain.
As Ganga adjusted her saree one last time and prepared to leave the bedroom, Srinu felt a knot of anxiety tighten in his stomach. He knew he needed to keep watching, to see what she would do next, but the growing sense of dread was hard to ignore.
Srinu watched the monitor intently as Ganga came downstairs, exited the bedroom, and finally left through the main door. He followed her every move, his heart pounding in his chest. She locked the door behind her and walked toward the gate where, to his complete shock, an auto was already waiting for her.
Srinu: (whispering to himself, eyes wide in disbelief) "Where did the auto come from?"
He watched in stunned silence as Ganga, without any hesitation, climbed into the auto. The vehicle then drove off, disappearing from the monitor’s view, leaving Srinu sitting there with his mouth agape. His mind raced, trying to process what had just happened.
For a moment, he sat frozen, replaying the events in his head. Then, suddenly, he jumped out of his chair, unable to sit still any longer. He began pacing around the room, his thoughts spiraling into chaos. He clutched his phone tightly, staring at it as if willing it to ring, hoping that Ganga would call him and explain where she was going. But the phone remained silent, adding to his growing frustration and fear.
Minutes passed, and with each second, the anger and suspicion gnawing at Srinu’s mind grew stronger. He could feel the walls closing in on him as the reality of the situation became clearer. His worst fears seemed to be confirmed—Ganga was hiding something from him, something significant. Initially, he thought about calling her directly to demand where she was going, but then he reconsidered. If she realized he was spying on her, it could ruin everything. He needed to play it cool, to be smart.
Instead, Srinu decided to reach out to her family and friends, hoping to catch her in a lie. He started making calls, his voice trembling slightly as he inquired if anyone had plans to meet with Ganga that day. Over the next 15 minutes, he called everyone they knew—family members, close friends, even some distant acquaintances. But the responses were the same: none of them had seen or heard from her.
Each response felt like another nail in the coffin. Srinu’s mind was now racing with worrisome thoughts, confirming his suspicions. He cursed under his breath, frustration boiling over as he realized Ganga had lied to him. The love and trust he had placed in her seemed to be unraveling before his eyes. Unable to hold back any longer, he decided to call her directly. But he knew he had to be careful; he couldn’t let her know he was suspicious.
With trembling hands, he dialed her number. The phone rang, but there was no answer. He cursed furiously at the silence and tried again. This time, after several rings, she picked up.
Ganga: (cheerfully, as if nothing was wrong) "Hey baby, what's up?"
Srinu clenched his jaw, struggling to control the surge of anger that threatened to spill out. With great effort, he forced himself to speak calmly.
Srinu: (trying to sound casual, masking his frustration) "Hi Ganga. I’m not feeling well. I was thinking of coming home for lunch and taking the rest of the day off."
There was a long, uncomfortable silence on the other end of the line. Srinu’s heart sank further as the seconds ticked by.
Srinu: (more insistent, voice tinged with anxiety) "Hello, Ganga? Are you there?"
Finally, Ganga responded, but her voice was hesitant, not at all like her usual self.
Ganga: (nervously, stumbling over her words) "Yeah, Srinu, I’m here. Sorry, I forgot to tell you—I’m going to Priya’s home today."
Srinu’s stomach dropped. He had called Priya just moments ago, and she had said she wasn’t expecting Ganga. The realization that his wife, the woman he had loved and trusted, was lying to him hit him like a punch to the gut. He felt as though his soul had been ripped from his body, leaving him cold and trembling, sweat breaking out across his skin.
As Ganga continued to talk, weaving a story about how she and Priya were planning to go out for lunch and shopping later, Srinu barely heard her. His mind was reeling, the shock of hearing her lie so effortlessly tearing at the fabric of his reality.
Ganga: (casually, as if there were nothing amiss) "Take care, baby. I gotta go. We’ll talk later."
Before Srinu could respond, she hung up the call. He stood there, phone still pressed to his ear, in complete disbelief.
She hadn’t even asked him why he wasn’t feeling well or shown any concern for his health. The coldness of her response, the ease with which she had lied, left him feeling utterly devastated.
Srinu’s hands shook as he lowered the phone, his mind a whirlwind of emotions. The woman he had devoted his life to, the woman he had trusted more than anyone, had just lied to him without a second thought. The warmth and love he had always associated with Ganga were replaced by a chilling realization: something was terribly, terribly wrong.
He felt the room spin slightly as the full weight of what had happened settled over him. The love of his life had deceived him, and now, the questions he had been too afraid to ask loomed larger than ever. The uncertainty and fear that had plagued him were no longer just in his mind—they were real, tangible, and they threatened to destroy everything he had built with Ganga.
Srinu sank into his chair, the weight of the moment crushing him. He knew that nothing would ever be the same again. The trust had been broken, and with it, the foundation of their relationship was beginning to crumble.
Srinu sat in his chair, tears streaming down his face, his heart heavy with the weight of betrayal. He desperately wanted to believe that everything he had just witnessed was a figment of his imagination. The thought of Ganga lying to him, of her being unfaithful, was too painful to accept. He would have done anything to prove that she wasn’t lying, that she was really going to meet her friend Priya as she had claimed.
Despite having spoken to Priya on the phone and knowing deep down that Ganga’s story didn’t add up, Srinu’s mind clung to the faint hope that there might be some truth to her words. He needed to convince himself, to find evidence that would dispel his growing fears. Driven by this desperate need, he dashed out of his office like a madman, his eyes wild with determination.
He started his bike and sped off, his mind racing faster than the engine beneath him. He headed straight to all the restaurants that Ganga liked, places where they had shared countless meals together, places that held memories of happier times. But as he searched each one, scanning the faces of every customer, his heart sank further—Ganga was nowhere to be found.
Refusing to give up, Srinu then went to all the shopping places she loved, the stores where she would spend hours browsing and trying on clothes. He combed through the aisles, his eyes darting from one shopper to the next, hoping for a glimpse of her familiar figure. But again, there was nothing. The city that had once seemed so full of life now felt like a barren wasteland, empty of the one person he was so desperate to find.
For two agonizing hours, Srinu scoured the city, searching like a madman, driven by the fear that his worst suspicions were true. But every place he visited only reinforced the growing certainty that Ganga was not where she said she would be. The realization hit him with the force of a sledgehammer: she had lied to him, and whatever she was doing, it was something she didn’t want him to know.
Defeated and utterly devastated, Srinu returned to his office. He slumped into his chair, his body heavy with exhaustion and despair. The adrenaline that had fueled his frantic search was gone, leaving only a hollow emptiness in its place. For the rest of the afternoon, he couldn’t bring himself to eat or work. He just sat there, staring at the monitor, hoping against hope that Ganga would return and prove him wrong.
Hours passed, and the afternoon slowly gave way to evening. The silence in the office was deafening, broken only by the occasional hum of the air conditioning and the ticking of the clock on the wall. Srinu watched the monitor obsessively, his eyes glued to the feed from the spy cameras. Each minute felt like an eternity as he waited, his anxiety growing with every passing second.
Finally, around 4:00 PM, he saw movement on the monitor. The same auto that had taken Ganga away earlier in the day reappeared, pulling up to the gate of their home. Srinu’s heart raced as he watched Ganga hurriedly get out of the auto, unlock the gate, and make her way to the front door. The auto took a quick U-turn and drove off, disappearing from view.
Srinu felt a surge of emotion—anger, confusion, and a deep sense of betrayal. He glanced at his wristwatch, noting the time: 4:00 PM. It was exactly one hour before he usually returned home from work. The realization hit him hard—had Ganga planned to return home before he did? Had she calculated her time so precisely, ensuring she would be back before he noticed her absence? The thought gnawed at him, adding another layer to the already tangled web of suspicions in his mind.
But Srinu knew he couldn’t rush home now. If he returned earlier than usual, Ganga might suspect that he had been watching her, that he knew more than he was letting on. He had to play it cool, to keep up the pretense of normalcy until he could confront her.
For the next agonizing hour, Srinu sat in his office, barely able to contain his anxiety. His mind raced with questions, each one more troubling than the last. What had Ganga been doing all day? Where had she gone? Who had she been with? And most importantly, how was she going to explain herself when he confronted her?
As soon as the clock struck 5:00 PM, Srinu bolted from his office, his heart pounding in his chest. He drove home as quickly as he could, the anticipation of the confrontation filling him with both dread and determination. He had to hear her side of the story, to see if there was any truth left in her words, or if everything had been a lie.
As he pulled into the driveway, Srinu took a deep breath, steeling himself for whatever was to come. He couldn’t shake the feeling that more surprises awaited him, that the day’s revelations were only the beginning.
