NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK POST * MARIE CLAIRE * ELITE DAILY * REFINERY29 * ROMPER * PRIDE * PUREWOW
" A gutsy book you need to read right now. Filled with heart and humor, it's scary good." -Courtney Love
Unwifeable is the "riveting" (Cheryl Strayed), "inspirational" (Issa Rae), "hilarious" (Candace Bushnell) debut memoir from notorious dating columnist Mandy Stadtmiller that is destined to "blow you away" (Colin Quinn). Critics call it "phenomenal" (Cat Marnell), "unflinching" (Elle), "brilliant" (BBC), "outrageously entertaining" (Booklist) and "a must-read" (BuzzFeed).
Provocative, fearless, and dizzyingly uncensored, Mandy spills every secret she knows about dating, networking, comedy, celebrity, media, psychology, relationships, addiction, and the quest to find one's true nature. She takes readers behind the scenes (and name names) as she relays her utterly addictive journey.
Starting in 2005, Mandy picks up everything to move across the country to Manhattan, looking for a fresh start. She is newly divorced, thirty-years-old, with a dream job at the New York Post. She is ready to conquer the city, the industry, the world. But underneath the glitz and glamour, there is a darker side threatening to surface. The drug-fueled, never-ending party starts off as thrilling...but grows ever-terrifying. Too many blackout nights and scary decisions begin to add up. As she searches for the truth behind the façade, Mandy realizes that falling in love won't fix her-until she learns to accept herself first.
This is a true New York fairy tale brought to life- Sex and the City on acid. Perfect for when "you feel stuck in some way and wish to become unstuck" (Caroline Kepnes), you'all soon see why Unwifeable is one of the best reviewed, most beloved memoirs of the year.

"A vital, inspiring book" (O, The Oprah Magazine)-a ferociously intimate memoir by a devout woman from a modest family in Saudi Arabia who became the unexpected leader of the courageous movement that won Saudi women the right to drive.
Manal al-Sharif grew up in Mecca the second daughter of a taxi driver, born the year strict fundamentalism took hold. In her adolescence, she was a religious radical, melting her brother's boy band cassettes in the oven because music was haram: forbidden by ---c law. But what a difference an education can make. By her twenties Manal was a computer security engineer, one of few women working in a desert compound built to resemble suburban America. That's when the Saudi kingdom's contradictions became too much to bear: she was labeled a slut for chatting with male colleagues, her college-age brother chaperoned her on a business trip, and while she kept a car in the garage, she was forbidden from driving on Saudi streets.
Manal al-Sharif's memoir is an "eye-opening" ( The Christian Science Monitor) account of the making of an accidental activist, a vivid story of a young '. woman who stood up to a kingdom of men-and won. Daring to Drive is "a brave, extraordinary, heartbreakingly personal" (Associated Press) celebration of resilience in the face of tyranny and "a testament to how women in '. countries are helping change their culture, one step at a time" ( New York Journal of Books).

"In The Middlepause Benjamin deftly and brilliantly examines the losses and unexpected gains she experienced in menopause. Menopause is a mind and body shift as monumental and universal as puberty, yet far less often discussed, especially in public, which is what makes Benjamin's work here so urgently necessary." -Kate Tuttle, The Los Angeles Times
The Middlepause offers a vision of contentment in middle age, without sentiment or delusion. Marina Benjamin weighs the losses and opportunities of our middle years, taking inspiration from literature, science, philosophy, and her own experience. Spurred by her surgical propulsion into a sudden menopause, she finds ways to move forward while maintaining clear-eyed acknowledgment of the challenges of aging. Attending to complicated elderly parents and a teenaged daughter, experiencing bereavement, her own health woes, and a fresh impetus to give, Benjamin emerges into a new definition of herself as daughter, mother, citizen, and woman.
Among The Middlepause's many wise observations about no longer being young: ""I am discovering that I care less about what other people think."" ""My needs are leaner and my storehouse fuller."" ""It is not possible to fully appreciate what it means to age without attending to what the body knows. . . . I have always had a knee-jerk distaste for the idea that age is all in the mind."" ""You need a cohort of peers to go through the aging process with you. A cackle of crones! A cavalry!"" Marina Benjamin's memoir will serve as a comfort, a companion to women going through the too-seldom-spoken of physical and mental changes in middle age and beyond.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist "gives a familial face to the mystique of Martha's Vineyard" in a memoir with "gentle humor and . . . elegiac sweetness" (Kirkus Reviews).
A National Book Critics Circle Award finalist
In the 1970s, Madeleine Blais's in-laws purchased a vacation house on Martha's Vineyard. A little more than two miles down a dirt road, it had no electricity or modern plumbing, the roof leaked, and mice had invaded the walls. It was perfect.
Sitting on Tisbury Great Pond-well-stocked with delicious oysters and crab-the house faced the ocean and the sky. Though improvements were made, the ethos remained the same: no heat, television, or telephone. Instead, there were countless hours at the beach, meals cooked and savored with friends, nights talking under the stars, until, in 2014, the house was sold.
To the New Owners is Madeleine Blais's "witty and charming . . . deeply felt memoir" of this house, and of the Vineyard itself, from the history of the island and its famous visitors, to the ferry, the pie shops, the quirky charms and customs, and the abundant natural beauty. But more than that, this is an elegy for a special place-a retreat that held the intimate history of her family (The National Book Review).

Quite possibly the most dangerous and intelligent member of the Nazi hierarchy, Joseph Goebbels's flair for propaganda and spectacular organization ensured the fuhrer's rise to power. As founder of the Reich Chamber of Culture, gauleiter of Berlin, and architect of complex machinery of modern totalitarian propaganda, Goebbels is considered one of the most evil figures of the twentieth century. It was through his understanding of the instruments of "public enlightenment" that the dictatorship was built and maintained. Through interviews with his friends and family and with information from his own unpublished diary, a remarkable picture of Goebbels emerges.

The rise and fall of William Mulholland, and the story of L.A.'s disastrous dam collapse: " A dramatic saga of ambition, politics, money and betrayal" (Los Angeles Daily News).
Rivers in the Desert follows the remarkable career of William Mulholland, the visionary who engineered the rise of Los Angeles as the greatest American city west of the Mississippi. He sought to transform the sparse and barren desert into an inhabitable environment by designing the longest aqueduct in the Western Hemisphere, bringing water from the mountains to support a large city.
This "fascinating history" chronicles Mulholland's dramatic ascension to wealth and fame-followed by his tragic downfall after the sudden collapse of the dam he had constructed to safeguard the water supply ( Newsweek). The disaster, which killed at least five hundred people, caused his repudiation by allies, friends, and a previously adoring community. Epic in scope, Rivers in the Desert chronicles the history of Los Angeles and examines the tragic fate of the man who rescued it.
"An arresting biography of William Mulholland, the visionary Los Angeles Water Department engineer . . . [his] personal and public dramas make for gripping reading." - Publishers Weekly
"A fascinating look at the political maneuvering and engineering marvels that moved the City of Angels into the first rank of American cities." - Booklist

Only Ernest Withers, a key figure in the civil rights movement, could have delivered such an iconic photographs-and the kind of information the FBI wanted . . .
Renowned photographer Ernest Withers captured some of the most stunning moments of the civil rights era-from the age-defining snapshot of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., riding one of the first integrated buses in Montegomery, to the haunting photo of Emmett Till's great-uncle pointing an accusing finger at his nephew's killers. He was trusted and beloved by King's inner circle, and had a front row seat to history . . . but few people know that Withers was also an informant for the FBI.
Memphis journalist Marc Perrusquia broke the story of Withers's secret life after a long investigation culminating in a landmark lawsuit against the government to release hundreds of once-classified FBI documents. Those files confirmed that, from 1958 to 1976, Withers helped the Bureau monitor pillars of the movement...

The story behind the invention of the most important medical diagnostic tool since the X-ray. On September 2, 1971, the chemist Paul Lauterbur had an idea that would change the practice of medical research. Considering recent research findings about the use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals to detect tumors in tissue samples, Lauterbur realized that the information from NMR signals could be recovered in the form of images-and thus obtained noninvasively from a living subject. It was an unexpected epiphany: he was eating a hamburger at the time. Lauterbur rushed out to buy a notebook in which to work out his idea; he completed his notes a few days later. He had discovered the basic method used in all MRI scanners around the world, and for this discovery he would share the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2003. This book, by Lauterbur's wife and scientific partner, M. Joan Dawson, is the story of Paul Lauterbur's discovery and the subsequent development of the most important medical diagnostic tool since the X-ray.
With MRI, Lauterbur had discovered an entirely new principle of imaging. Dawson explains the science behind the discovery and describes Lauterbur's development of the idea, his steadfastness in the face of widespread skepticism and criticism, and related work by other scientists including Peter Mansfield (Lauterbur's Nobel co-recipient), and Raymond Damadian (who famously feuded with Lauterbur over credit for the ideas behind MRI). She offers not only the story of one man's passion for his work but also a case study of how science is actually done: a flash of insight followed by years of painstaking work.

The New York Times-bestselling memoir of two Iowa girls in 1945 New York City: "Hart has a genuine gift for conveying the texture of midcentury Manhattan." -USA Today
"Although the country is still at war, Manhattan during the summer of 1945 is an intoxicating place, especially for two fresh-faced young coeds who step off a train from Iowa armed with little more than their youthful exuberance and the name of a very influential contact. The combination is enough to land Marjorie and her best friend, Marty, jobs as pages at the prestigious Tiffany & Co., making them the first female employees ever to work the sales floor. From this groundbreaking vantage point, the girls see and do it all, from assisting notorious gangsters and international playboys at the jewelry counters, to rubbing elbows with celebrities at the city's legendary nightclubs, to glimpsing General Eisenhower during his triumphant victory parade . . . Remarkably, this winsome memoir was written 60 years after that giddy summer spent pinching pennies and dreaming of diamonds, yet Hart's infectious vivacity resonates with a madcap immediacy, delectably capturing the city's heady vibrancy and a young girl's guileless enchantment." - Booklist

"[A] glorious once-upon-a-time fairytale come true. . . . I loved every moment!"-Adriana Trigiani, New York Times-bestselling author of The Good Left Undone

When cowboys were workers and battled their bosses
In the pantheon of American icons, the cowboy embodies the traits of "rugged individualism," independent, solitary, and stoical. In reality, cowboys were grossly exploited and underpaid seasonal workers, who responded to the abuses of their employers in a series of militant strikes. Their resistance arose from the rise and demise of a "beef bonanza" that attracted international capital. Business interests approached the market with the expectation that it would have the same freedom to brutally impose its will as it had exercised on native peoples and the recently emancipated African Americans. These assumptions contributed to a series of bitter and violent "range wars," which broke out from Texas to Montana and framed the appearance of labor conflicts in the region. These social tensions stirred a series of political insurgencies that became virtually endemic to the American West of the Gilded Age. Mark A. Lause explores the relationship between these neglected labor conflicts, the "range wars," and the third-party movements.

A New York Times-bestselling author's account of a Georgia deputy accused of murder: "A gripping, no-holds-barred work of investigative journalism" (Steve Jackson, author of No Stone Unturned).
When her missing boyfriend is found murdered, his body encased in cement inside a watering trough and dumped in a cattle field, a local sheriff's deputy is arrested and charged with his murder. But as New York Times-bestselling author and investigative journalist M. William Phelps digs in, the truth leads to questions about her guilt.
This hard-hitting account immerses readers in the life of the first female deputy in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, who claims a sexual harassment suit she filed against the sheriff led to a murder charge. Is Tracy Fortson guilty or innocent? You decide.

A wild and hilarious journey through adulting, from actress and comedian Mamrie Hart-the New York Times bestselling author of You Deserve a Drink.
When Mamrie simultaneously enters her 30s and finds herself single for the first time since college, the world is suddenly full of possibilities. Emboldened by the cool confidence that comes with the end of one's 20s plus the newfound independence of an attachment-free lifestyle, Mamrie commits herself to living life with even more spirit, adventure, and heart than before. Mamrie dives into new experiences at full-tilt and seeks out once-in-a-lifetime opportunities (like meeting the Dixie Chicks), bucket-list goals (like visiting the Moulin Rouge), and madcap adventures (like going anchors-away on a Backstreet Boys cruise)-all while diving back into the dating world for the first time in a decade.
In I've Got This Round, readers will find the same shameless honesty and I'll-try-anything-once spirit they loved in Hart's New York Times bestseller You Deserve a Drink. Mamrie doubles down on her strong female friendships, her willingness to engage in shenanigans, and her inimitable candor, taking the reader along for the ride.

"The story of a family, united by blood, pride, and the bonds that defy logic" from the national bestselling author of In These Girls, Hope Is a Muscle (Ellen Kanner, The Miami Herald).
In 1952, Madeleine Blais's father died suddenly, leaving his pregnant wife and their five young children to face their future alone. Uphill Walkers is the story of how the Blais family pulled together to survive and ultimately thrive in an era when a single-parent family was almost unheard-of. As they came of age in an Irish-American household that often struggled to make ends meet, the Blais children would rise again and again above all obstacles-at every step of the way inspired by a mother who expected much but gave even more, as she saved and sacrificed to provide each child with the same education they would have received had their father lived.
Beautiful, heartbreaking, and full of wonderful insights about sisterhood, brotherhood, and the ties that bind us together, Uphill Walkers is a moving portrait of the love it takes to succeed against the odds-and what it means to be a family.
"This is a book about a real family, the kind we used to know before Reality TV; it's about resilience and love, told with heart and grace." - St. Petersburg Times

"A strange, wondrous, challenging, enriching book....Beautiful and powerful...you will not encounter another book like it."
-National Review online
In Digital Barbarism, bestselling novelist Mark Helprin (Winter's Tale, A Soldier of the Great War) offers a ringing Jeffersonian defense of private property in the age of digital culture, with its degradation of thought and language and collectivist bias against the rights of individual creators. A timely, cogent, and important attack on the popular Creative Commons movement, Digital Barbarism provides rational, witty, and supremely wise support for the individual voice and its hard-won legal protections.

Hazard is a poignant, unflinching memoir of the emotional intricacies of growing up with a severely disabled sibling. Margaret Combs shows how her Southern Baptist family coped with lived reality of autism in an era of ignorance and shame, the 1950s through the 1970s, and shares her own tragedy and anguish of being torn between helping her brother and yearning for her own life. Like many siblings of disabled children, young Margaret drives herself to excel in order to make up for her family's sorrow and ultimately flees her family for what she hopes is a normal" life.
Hazard is also a story of indelible bonds between siblings: the one between Combs and her sister, and the deep and rueful one she has with her disabled brother; how he and she were buddies; and how fervently she wanted to make him whole. Initially fueled by a wish that her brother had never been born, the author eventually arrives in a deeper place of gratitude for this same brother, whom she loves and who loves her in return.

For eleven seasons, she was head of one of America's favorite television households. Now meet the lovable real-life woman behind the Happy Days mom.
Before she was affectionately known to millions as "Mrs. C.," Marion Ross began her career as a Paramount starlet who went on to appear in nearly every major TV series of the 1950s and 1960s-including Love, American Style, in which she donned an apron that would cinch her career. Soon after came the phone call that changed her life . . .
In this warm and candid memoir, filled with recollections from the award-winning Happy Days team-from break-out star Henry Winkler to Cunningham "wild child" Erin Moran-Ross shares what it was like to be a starry-eyed young girl with dreams in poor, rural Minnesota, and the resilience it took to make them come true. She recalls her early years in the business, being in the company of such luminaries as Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, yet always feeling the Hollywood outsider-an invisibility that mirrored her own childhood. She reveals the joys of playing a wife and mother on TV, and the struggles of maintaining those roles in real life. But among Ross's most heart-rending recollections are those of finally finding a soulmate-another hope made true beyond her expectations.
Featuring producer Garry Marshall's final interview-as well as a touching foreword from her "TV son" Ron Howard, and a conversation with her real-life son and daughter, Marion Ross's inspiring story is also a glowing tribute to all those who fulfilled her dreams-and in turn, gave us some of the happiest days of our own lives.
